In the real world, the land cruiser would be better overall, I think the commercial land cruiser has smaller wheels and its a bit basic. The Gwagon is too expensive and not as practical, would love to see a range rover/discovery up against the g wagon
I don’t think someone who’d buy an actual G-wagon cares about practicality at all. They buy it because they like it, for being fast, luxury, yet off-roadable at the same time.
Imagine a basic prado with no off roading options, manual gear box and less than half the horse power beat G-Wagon. What would happen when they match with Full blown GR-Landcruiser will crawl control, hill descend and hill climb assist, ride height control and better ground clearance.
I would like to see a repeat of the test without any consideration for that g class value. Step on it, dont worry about damaged rims and suspension just treat it as if it were a 37k Landrover.
Love the vid. However, the UK spec Cruiser base model is really not a fair comparison to the G. The top of range Prado Kakadu has variable height suspension. I have a Prado VX with a 50mm lift (in Australia) that would easily beat the G. Plus even the Prado doesn't have proper off-road tyres, try one with BFGs or Falken Wildpeaks. The Cruiser is also one of the best off-road vehicles in the world so at least it one this round. And I'm sure you could pimp it in purple with a mega diesel tune up to match! But great fun watching!

As a G-Wagon fan boy, I think there is nothing better out there, however I do love the Toyota Landcruiser because you have all the modern comforts with all the off road performance while safe in the knowledge it wont let you down. Unfare comparison, the Prado here is SWB, should have used 5 door version.. also you could have used non AMG G-Class (preferably diesel for fair comparo) without side hanging exhaust so could have easily completed one obstacle were G was stopped.. in that case it would hav been a clear win fr G-wagen.

They should definitely add a sensor to these expensive off roaders, if they dont already have, that detects which tires are not on the ground and how much angle do you have until you are on the edge of flipping the car so safety engages and doesn't let continue until you move back and re-approach. Just an idea!
I think we need to stop adding in all these dumb "safety" measures that are really just driving handicap assists in disguise that end up just helping bad drivers and keeping them bad at driving too
This might be a dumb question as i don't know much about off-roading, but what's the deal with the downhill test? You could say "going slower gives you more control", but then again why not just use the brakes in addition? And in a car with hill decent controll, wouldn't applying brakes (not so much as to stop the car) help in slowing the hill decent further while still letting the system work?
The land cruiser is just a beast. Went to Dubai and did a desert dunes experience thing, the land cruiser we did it in impressed me more than basically any other car I’ve ever been in!

Before we go blabla, make sure to repeat exactly the same... 14:16 -> Land Cruiser hit the bottom plate, causing it to "lose" points to the G. But... If you look closely at 14:55, you can clearly see that the G was more to the side of the slope, also compared to the GoPro on the ground. And the slope there already started to flatten out, so unfair I guess? Still, looking at pricing and usability the Land Cruiser is a way better off-roader than the G63
and the "g wagon impressed me the most so it wins" nonsense when it clearly wasn't as good up the slope.. it's a fun comparison but utter nonsense at the same time
There is a Spanish guy (don't know the name) who really tests offroad vehicles. On some tracks he uses only 1 or 2 cars could pass through: the G Wagon (properly equiped) and the Jeep. Latest Range Rover is very capable, too, it is higher and passes some ditches most cannot. But on a steep hill, the G Wagon pulled the Range Rover uphill all the way like a feather, the other way around, almost not at all. There is also a guy in Kazakhstan trying many, many SUVs.
What's up with the jump start or lack thereof on the downhill section..... Everyone just totally ignored the fact that the Land Cruiser jumped the start, or the G-Wagon failed to start I should say, the same amount of distance it "won" in. They are no longer on sale in the UK, Hilux and the Ranger are the only pick-ups left in the UK

I agree
Man, that Land Cruiser jump was like out of a 90’s Toyota commercial… “I love what you do for me… ToYoTa!”
That purple looks SICK 🔥🔥🔥
Allthough I consider LC as a better ofroader than MB G , I consider the battle unfair. Not only because of tyres , but the 3door is giving a great advantage in offroad conditions. Shorter in length means better escape angle and of course lighter.
What about the power and engine and other specs .. oh those all were fair right?
Same as I thought
I had no idea there was a 2 door Land Cruiser since they don’t sell them in Canada. That thing is sick.
I doubt the g wagen win if toyota use land cruiser 76 series australia specs
@@trianggaindralukmana2184 then there is G professional to beat it
@@hanimusthafa mat released the brakes 2 seconds after the LC, which gave mat the win and the last challenge should go to the LC, since it cleared the challenge flawless. So no matter what a g would never win.
@@hanimusthafa did u ever see real offroad competition use G wagen? Most serious offroad competition dominated by fj40, lc 70&80 series, suzuki jimny in asia (IOX, Borneo offroad, Malaysia) or old defender in europe
Actually the 76 series has FR difflock, part time 4wd, rear n front solid axle, v8 diesel, what g wagen pro has? 3.0 inline 6 old diesel merc? Triple difflock but limited suspension travel?
@@trianggaindralukmana2184 i’m a G-wagen driver for last 13 years & am quite aware about the offroad capability of that machine as we regularly do offroading.. and mine is a 1986 300GD which is quite similar to the present G professional by its character and offroading ability.. we hav TLC, that too 70 series and many other 4x4s in our team like wrangler, patrol, etc., so I’m talking from experience not based on any videos.
Talking about competition, we too uses cheaper 4x4s like suzuki & mahindra’s in competition thats cos of the cheap maintenance cost & comfort to build it, we have to do lot of modification for competition vehicles.. what we are talking here about stock cars.
G-wagen as an offroader have proud it many times including dakar rally and record breaking world expeditions.
They should definitely add a sensor to these expensive off roaders, if they dont already have, that detects which tires are not on the ground and how much angle do you have until you are on the edge of flipping the car so safety engages and doesn't let continue until you move back and re-approach. Just an idea!
I think we need to stop adding in all these dumb "safety" measures that are really just driving handicap assists in disguise that end up just helping bad drivers and keeping them bad at driving too
@@TKOfromJohn I definitely couldn't agree more on that!
I think the wrangler has that...our wrangle Rubi has articulation sensors and tire pressure
the G wagon and Land Cruiser did not have the same approach to the woods track @6:07..
try flooring the G wagon through as you did the land cruiser...
5:12...Matt cheated on the downhill. He was still on the brakes as the car was not even moving.

Why do you guys always get base model landcruiser prado, the one loaded to the brim are amazing
I think he said they dont get them in the uk.
"that's the trouble when you have a expensive offroader" WhistlinDiesel has joined the chat
The toyota Prado we get here has a 4.0 V6 , and is an absolute beast also it's way more luxurious than what you have
Australia? As far as I know we only get the 2.8 TD in the UK. The regular consumer one has a bit of a nicer interior than this commercial one.

Great vid Matt… how about a like for like comparison vid, so a four door land cruiser vs a standard G wagon 350 or 400 D, with the same tires?
The land cruiser flying really needed "I believe I can fly" edited over it
17:15 M3 Competition in the background, nice. 😉👌
That German accent gets me everytime 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Get G500 or G400d to be more fair because they have more ground clearance then G63 and they dont have fancy AMG exhaust that you can damage.
th-cam.com/video/3pHK3u83X78/w-d-xo.html
This might be a dumb question as i don't know much about off-roading, but what's the deal with the downhill test? You could say "going slower gives you more control", but then again why not just use the brakes in addition? And in a car with hill decent controll, wouldn't applying brakes (not so much as to stop the car) help in slowing the hill decent further while still letting the system work?
That landcruiser is probably rarer than the AMG
It's the exact opposite
Maybe the Mercedes lost, but it looked so cool doing it 👌💪
Don't know how he did that, but that guy is genius. Well done, bro. 👍.
The land cruiser is just a beast. Went to Dubai and did a desert dunes experience thing, the land cruiser we did it in impressed me more than basically any other car I’ve ever been in!
Was that the same Landcruiser we see in the video? I assumed they had the big ones in those areas....
Would be interesting to see the comparison between a audi a6 vs an a6 allroad.
Thanks for the the great work tho
Why not test with the 5-door Landcruiser instead of the 3-door version? It's not exactly the version most people opt for..
But thank you for very good videos, keep them coming!
I just think the basic Toyota is cool, and the sort of car you could keep for 20 years and not worry about it too much😎👍
True
But the reputation , luxury , performance , look you get on the g63 is incomparable

Guess what: an expensive G with road tires for an off-road race
Matt you should of used the full sized land cruiser. This model was a two door, should of used the 4 door model.
And he should’ve used the VX not the Prado
If you lived in Oman, UAE, Qatar and Bahrain and got a Land Cruiser and went off-road no issues at all
I’d take the Diesel Yota over that GWagon 8 days of the week..
Oops Matt you cheated the down hill challenge, I don't know why Graham was hesitant to tell you that.
Hey Matt I think you should review the defender and the G63 AMG
I'd never off road my g-wag
The TOYOTA can take any amount of bashing because it costs so much less and it's TOUGH ..less to worry about
th-cam.com/video/3pHK3u83X78/w-d-xo.html
The G wagon is made to go off road just because you won’t take it does not change the purpose of the vehicle
The best comparison will be the off road focust g400d on proper 18s and rear pipes . g63 too delicate for off road on street tires and lowered g Clarence. Video though was fun
You should get the same tires for such comparisons, it would just be more accurate and for me more interesting even tho the outcome probably wouldn't change

Matt is a great strategy to bring the 3-door manual PRADO.
Marauder SUV, Innoson made in Nigeria, Kantaka made in Ghana, Mobius made in Kenya, Wallyscar made in Tunisia. I would like to see an off road challenge with all the usual off road vehicles you use.
Affe
and the "g wagon impressed me the most so it wins" nonsense when it clearly wasn't as good up the slope.. it's a fun comparison but utter nonsense at the same time
@@MyRealName Yeah exactly, guess we don't have to take this too seriously ;)

There is a Spanish guy (don't know the name) who really tests offroad vehicles. On some tracks he uses only 1 or 2 cars could pass through: the G Wagon (properly equiped) and the Jeep. Latest Range Rover is very capable, too, it is higher and passes some ditches most cannot. But on a steep hill, the G Wagon pulled the Range Rover uphill all the way like a feather, the other way around, almost not at all. There is also a guy in Kazakhstan trying many, many SUVs.

No it doesn't
What's up with the jump start or lack thereof on the downhill section.....
Everyone just totally ignored the fact that the Land Cruiser jumped the start, or the G-Wagon failed to start I should say, the same amount of distance it "won" in.
I wish we could get those freaking two-door Land Cruisers with a manual transmission in the US, not that anyone would pay $50,000 for a small SUV.
