I'm back at Highgate Cemetery in London to visit the famous burials and explore more of the Cemetery! We'll visit George Michael, Karl Marx, Jeremy Beadle, Lucian Freud, Michael Faraday and more...
If you haven't seen my first video click the link below.
    • Hunting For Vampires A...
The cemetery in its original form - the northwestern wooded area - opened in 1839, as part of a plan to provide seven large, modern cemeteries, now known as the "Magnificent Seven", around the outside of central London. The inner-city cemeteries, mostly the graveyards attached to individual churches, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a hazard to health and an undignified way to treat the dead. The initial design was by architect and entrepreneur Stephen Geary.
On Monday 20 May 1839, Highgate (West) Cemetery was dedicated to St. James[3] by the Right Reverend Charles James Blomfield, Lord Bishop of London. Fifteen acres were consecrated for the use of the Church of England, and two acres set aside for Dissenters. Rights of burial were sold for either limited period or in perpetuity. The first burial was Elizabeth Jackson of Little Windmill Street, Soho, on 26 May.
Highgate, like the others of the Magnificent Seven, soon became a fashionable place for burials and was much admired and visited. The Victorian attitude to death and its presentation led to the creation of a wealth of Gothic tombs and buildings. It occupies a spectacular south-facing hillside site slightly downhill from the top of the hill of Highgate itself, next to Waterlow Park. In 1854 a further 19 acres to the south east of the original area, across Swains Lane, was bought to form the eastern part of the cemetery which opened in 1860. Both sides of the Cemetery are still used today for burials.
The cemetery's grounds are full of trees, shrubbery and wildflowers, most of which have been planted and grown without human influence. The grounds are a haven for birds and small animals such as foxes.
Highgate Cemetery was featured in the popular media from the 1960s to the late 1980s for its so-called occult past, particularly as being the alleged site of the "Highgate Vampire".

@@catherinevfrost85 we have a family friend that owned their own mortuary, retired now. When my brother was killed Christmas Eve night in a car accident, the couple that hit him was killed as well and my brother’s family wasn’t killed, but she was a great help to us. She couldn’t do his funeral because she was in a different county. The help she gave us and those of us that had more questions because I come from a large family, she answered our questions. Our sister in law wasn’t going to bury him in the vault in the ground and we all wanted him to have it to keep the unground water from flowing through his grave, she donated one. Which was a very kind thing to do and our sister in law couldn’t turn it down because it was free. Our sister in law wasn’t going to let us see him. So she told us that even if there was some injuries to his face, if we wanted that last goodbye we should because we would always regret it, she had seen it in many families. I’m glad she told us that, his injuries were not that bad. Most of us chose to see him, kiss and hold his hand and say our final goodbye. What was odd when I held his hand it was not cold like I expected. I’m not a Morbid person but I don’t fear seeing death in different stages. Some of it wouldn’t want to touch at different stages. I guess I just see it as part of life and I do believe the body is just a vessel to hold our soul, that life is in heaven after death.

It's a stunningly beautiful cemetery, well kept, with lots of interesting grave art and architecture. The Brothers Grimm are buried there among other famous people. You were looking into the mausoleum of COLUMBARIUM and of the Beloved Fanny Harriet Pusey. however there are many cremated ⚱️🏺ashes there as well, could it have been one of the many entombed there?

Since when did people get charged to visit a cemetery in Britain ? Someone should query this with Islington council. Someone is on the make. Family’s pay a lot of money for plots and that should pay for the upkeep of the cemetery. I get a lot of George Michaels fans would go there to pay their respects but to charge it’s disgusting. I’ve never seen a cemetery so poorly maintained. Why didn’t George’s family have a mausoleum built it would be there for eternity. I had the honour of meeting Jeremy Beadle many years ago in fact I made him a black coffee . As he’d been to a function the night before and was shall we say a bit fragile. Most of the ones you showed that you say are famous people. Most people could care less about wanted to see somebody like Benny Hill.
