- Join me in the beautiful surroundings of St Baglan's church in North Wales as I visit the grave of Lord Snowdon, Brother in law to the Queen and husband to Princess Margaret. If thats not amazing enough we'll try to find the grave of an apparent pirate....oh and I brought the dog too.
St Baglan's Church, Llanfaglan, is a redundant church in the parish of Llanfaglan, Gwynedd, Wales. It is designated by Cadw as a Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches. It stands in an isolated position in a field some 150 metres (164 yd) from a minor road.
The size of the surrounding churchyard and the presence within the structure of the church of a stone dating from the 5th or 6th century is evidence that an earlier church or churches stood on the site. It is traditionally credited to its namesake, the 7th-century saint Baglan ap Dingad. The present church dates probably from the 13th century. The chancel was rebuilt in about 1800, when the north porch was also added. Unusually, the church escaped restoration during the Victorian era, and so its interior is still little changed since about 1800. Describing the reasons for its Grade I listing, Cadw states it is "a rare example of a medieval church unrestored in the 19th century, so retaining an exceptionally complete set of 18th-century furnishings". It also comments on its "outstanding isolated setting." After it was declared redundant, the church was vested in the charity the Friends of Friendless Churches in 1991, and the charity has held the freehold since 7 February 1991.It has since been repaired, aided by financial help from Cadw.
The church is constructed in stone with slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave and a chancel under a single roof, a south transept acting as a chapel, and a north porch. On the west gable is a bellcote, and on the chancel gable is a weathered cross. There are no windows in the nave, and the chancel has only a two-light east window. In the south and east walls of the transept are small two-light windows. Over the doorway is a lintel consisting of a 6th-century inscribed stone. Internally, the walls are plastered and whitewashed; the roof timbers are also whitewashed. The floor is paved with slate slabs. There is no division between the nave and the chancel, and the transept is fully open to the body of the church. The east window dates from the 14th century and was resited when the chancel was rebuilt.

What a beautiful place ...I have never seen a church like this one...I hope it remains undamaged for generations to come and see... The graveyard itself and the view of the sea, gave me a strange feeling ( all good) otherworldly ... I found it hard to breath for a while....Stunned and amazed ...Thank you for taking us to see this wonderful place..

As we walk in these places and slowly read each stone. We find the unexpected gem. A grave yard tells a mighty tale of things we may endever, of things we like to do or love that lasts forever, the stroll will take us far and wide to places hardly heard of , but one day soon we all will be of what it’s truly made of. Perfect wild and windy place for a pirate’s resting place. Can close one’s eyes and hear the wind in the sails and feel the spray of the ocean on one’s face. Thanks for the ramble…it’s too hot today where I have to walk, this was a welcome relief.

We had a day off school when Princess Margaret married Anthony Armstrong Jones. He was given a title - Lord Snowdon, to enable him to marry Margaret. We watched the wedding on a small black and white TV. It must have been 1962 ish. I was 10 years old.
He did not need a title to marry Princess Margaret. They married on 6th May 1960 - he was not created Earl of Snowdon and Viscount Linley, of Nymans in the County of Sussex, until 6 October 1961, just before their son was born.

Real Americans would cherish historical sites such as this. We have too many diverse ideologies and liberal ideas to keep treasures intact. Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown in the state of Virginia are good examples of trying to preserve our heritage. William and Mary is also a fine institution with historical flare. St. Paul's Church in Norfolk has a cannonball in embedded in one of its walls; a sign that British fire was very real in our fair city.

Many years ago people used to be buried underneath the chapel floor I wouldn’t be surprised if they wasn’t buried in this chapel

@@wcfheadshots240 He's buried near to his father. This is the burial plot for the Armstrong Jones family, who are Welsh. The current 2nd Earl of Snowdon will also be buried here.

The carved decorated bench to the right of the communion table in the chancel is called a misericord. A foldable seat for clergy. Probably the only pre-Reformation item left in that little church.

I spent a day with Tony Snowdon (he insisted I call him Tony) back in 1997. He was a guest editor of Country Life magazine, I was the design editor and we were choosing some of his photographs for the issue.

He used to go with his children ,and the Queen Mother to the London Symphony Orchestra Children's Concerts at the Royal Festival Hall after he and Princess Margaret had separated. They once went onto the stage , and the conductor used Lord Snowdon and his children to hold a long piece of garden hose. The Conductor put a chemical funnel at one end, and a brass mouth piece at the other. He then got a trumpet player to come and ""play ""the garden hose before coiling it up to show a French Horn is made . Lord Snowdon said one word, ""Wow ! ""
@@deadgoodwalks I found him to be very pleasant. He wanted the work to be finished quickly so he could show off his 'cottage', gossip about the people in the Country Life office and demolish a few bottles of wine.

The Stone above the door is from the Roman period when the first Church was built. It has a early Cymric inscription.

What a lovely cemetery. Fancy Lord Snowden being buried there. I didn’t know he was dead. A lovely peaceful place. I wonder if his children ever go there and lay some flowers on there for him. Wales is a beautiful place.

Re the "correction" on the grave stone. Griffith Williams married Jane Jones at Llanfaglan in 1837. Griffith was a farmer, the name of his farm being Cae('r) Coch or Cock, in the nearby parish of Llanbeblig. The farm was later referred to as ''Bronydd or Cae Cock' when up for sale in 1904. It is believed the name of the farm was changed in the course of the Welsh Revival (1904-1905).

According to the 1st Earl of Snowdon’s son David (currently the Earl) from an interview he did in 2018, he also has plans to be buried and reunited with his father one day, and to honour his Welsh ancestry. So I think it’s safe to say that they might build a family mausoleum someday? This would accommodate the past, present, and the future Earls of Snowdon. (Antony had 3 legitimate children and 7 grandchildren, so that’s potentially a big room to fill)
You could be right, there's plenty of room there for a mausoleum
There absolutely are talks of this, no plans as of yet but it’s been a family discussion since we lost Tony 🙏🏻
The church has been abandoned and is taken care of by volunteers. There was one service a year, but that stopped years ago.
It it run by Friends of friendless churches, which strives to save and maintain churches that have been left to decay and are in threat of demolition
I doubt they would get permission to build a mausoleum in that graveyard.

Kevin! A fab name. There was a small fire in a flat by me. The fire brigade assisted and took th lady out of the flat then asked is there anyone else in the flat! She told them Wayne was in there. ( the dog) funny really, all ended well.

New to this channel, i didn't planned to look at grave sites i was aiming the area and the eye sight of your dog lol, but it was quite nice show of the place you visited to see. And gave me a idea of a spot my family have that is k marked at a cemetery since one of my family passed away. And the ontop ground graves looks interesting actually, to spare place and build in section ontop for those who wanna rest there as in whole that havent become ash to ashes. I shall put that idea and see if the laws here say about that in sweden for those who have grave places before the new law entered here. Interesting ideas

My ex husband Is related to the royal family through queen Victoria. His ancestor wanted to marry a commoner against his family's wishes so he his wife and brother came to America on a steamship. Still have the family jewels and the manor with the family crest still stands in Germany
