I have to agree with you, he was drafted into an egregiously bad franchise even before they were known for what they are today. You have to give him some slack for being a Texans draft pick
I don't think we can really blame David Carr. At the time the Texans were basically a JV team going against all pros. But I can see why people would see him as a huge bust.
Tim Couch was the quarterback for an expansion team and still won rookie of the month and had a couple successful hail marys. Johnny Manziel had Joe Thomas as a left tackle and was still a terrible quarterback and kept getting in trouble.
As a Chargers fan for life, the story of Ryan Leaf breaks my heart. I’m happy he is in a better place in his life now, and that he openly shares his experiences to prevent others from making similar mistakes in their own lives. Bolt up!
@@kevinwebster7868hes actually pretty self aware and understanding of his situation nowadays. Watched him talk about it for a while the other day and he was clear about absolutely everything being hid fault
Tim Couch and David Carr went to expansion teams and took an absolute beating in their games setting sack records. They also had no true weapons at skill positions to take pressure off them. Getting hit that many times that fast is something nobody could face and be highly successful. Charles Rodgers had a great draft day suit and he was on top of the world that day but sadly it didn't last. So unfortunate because I really thought he could be a future super star.
@@johndolan5076 Couch also had unfair expectations placed on him. Some local people figured hed take the team right to the playoffs like beloved QB Kosar did. Those people failed to recognize the team Kosar had was significantly better. Most QB's taken that high do have high expectations on them, but his were higher then Id say most. What made it worse is that Cleveland organization only picked up 2 offensive line in the draft in 3 years, meaning they were happy to let the beating continue. I know when you're an expansion team roster holes are a plenty, but competition only goes so far at the offensive line positions. What's worse is he's often lumped with the worst of all time, but with many of the greatest busts at the QB position you see the team get derailed actively having them. Akili Smith from that draft is a far greater bust to me, he helped contribute years of misery to Cincy fans. I don't put couch in that group like Leaf and Russell but again I think it was the unfair expectations put upon him.
Carr and Couch shouldn't be on this list. Both were tossed to blood thirsty wolves and then people got mad because they were eaten alive. What did they expect with no protection upfront and no weapons downfield or in the back field?! Manziel should have been the Brown's players. For the Texans eitherTravis Johnson or Okoye.
The thing about JaMarcus Russell i'll never forget is that the he didn't come to film meetings and demanded they give him video to watch at home. They'd always ask him "did you watch the film?" and he'd always say "yes, of course I did." Some of the times however, they gave him BLANK VHS tapes!
JaMarcus Russell left LSU for the money. All too often NFL teams fall in love with a big QB with a big arm. Had they watched enough game film they would have seen how he blew games for LSU. As an LSU fan, I'm glad he left. LSU won the national championship the following year which they would not have won had Russell stayed. He was lazy.
I don’t think David Carr is at fault…expansion teams are Swiss cheese, missing talent in necessary spots…Ryan Leaf didn’t translate well to the nfl and went through some stuff but I’m glad he turned it around and tries to talk to draftees. Hopefully he helps others avoid his mistakes.
I was a Houston Oilers fan my whole life, so when the Texans came along, I latched onto them. I was screaming at my TV that they needed to sign a veteran QB to start a year or two before putting Carr out there. But no, they threw the poor kid to the wolves. I believe he could have been great, and nothing will ever change my mind.
I would say 99% of us Browns fans completely think you're wrong about Couch being worse than Manziel. Couch was dealt a tough hand, Manziel was just a joke.
not to mention Johnny went in with a ridiculous ego and horrible attitude, doing that stupid money thing and just not even trying to improve or adjust to the NFL.
He's not even close, Courtney Brown, Mingo, Manziel, Warren, Coleman, and Gilbert. Gilbert was lucky he had Manziel to hog the spotlight Gilbert couldn't even make it onto the field.
@@markfleming1781 Because he a rookie being asked to lead an expansion team. Couch was dealt a bad hand, so it's hard to call him a bust when he was set up to fail.
I remember Kyle boller lol. That reminds me when skip bayless used to clown him all the time relentlessly calling him “Kyle I should have been a bowler.” Skip is annoying but he’s excellent at coming up with nicknames for people off their last names. Lol
Tennessee's biggest bust was Isaiah Wilson drafted 29th in 2020. Dude was so horrible with on field & off field antics, he played one game as a Titan, was mutually released from the team, then Miami released him after one season, and nobody has heard from him since
What's funny about Mandarich is that he came back to the NFL with the Colts and was actually a starting guard in Peyton Manning's rookie season. He was never great, but he was ok. And given what a nightmare he was in Green Bay, that's a miracle
steroids lol. they made him think he was the greatest athlete ever as soon as he got busted and went off then it's like in Batman when they unplugged bane 🤣🤣🤣
@@bradtaylor5828 Any player drafted that high who is then released after only three seasons is a BUST, regardless if they played well later on for another team. Worse still, the dude was out of football for a couple of years battling alcohol and substance abuse. When he was ready to come back, he had to learn how to actually play the tackle position. Are you really going to argue that a player with that career (who was drafted ahead of Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Deion, no less) was not a bust? He wasn’t picked number 2 to be “serviceable”.
The Vikings' Biggest Draft Mistake was passing on quarterback Aaron Rodgers TWICE in 2005!! They instead drafted a bust Wide Receiver in Troy Williamson who can't catch and blamed his vision and also drafting a Wisconsin product who had only one year of experience and failed expectations miserably with injuries in Erasmus James. They should have drafted Rodgers even with Culpepper as the current starter on the team since he was battling injuries and proved to be super inconsistent! Of course, 23 other also made the mistake the Vikings did but Minnesota suffered the far worst end of the stick by having to play Rodgers twice a year and him putting them outside of the playoffs year in and year out.. :/
As much as I enjoy your content my man, I have to disagree with many picks: Texans: Nope, Amobi Okoye is their real biggest bust. Carr was destroyed beyond repair because of maybe the poorest O-lines in recent history. Titans: Isaiah Wilson is by far the worst. He was out of the league faster than many memorable busts. Jake Locker is in close 2nd. Ravens: Matt Elam or Breshad Perriman are even worse than Boller. Redskins: Josh Doctson, the guy is a ghost. Jets: Vernon Gholston. All hype, 0 production. Cardinals: Clyde Duncan. 4 career receptions as a 1st round WR. Vikings: Troy Williamson. Bills: Aaron Maybin did nothing for them, or himself. Bengals: Ki-Jana Carter and Akili Smith are WAY WORSE than Ogbuehi. Like, A LOT. Browns: Johnny Manziel, Justin Gilbert or Courtney Brown are bigger busts than Couch IMO. Panthers: Carruth is an obvious bust, but considering only performance on the field, Rashard Anderson and Tim Biakabutuka are the poorest 1st round players the Panthers have ever drafted.
If Ogbeuhi had been any good, the Bengals would probably never have had Burrow. But yeah, Smith, then Klingler, then Carter were worse. And now that I think about it, John Ross, too.
Tim Couch was not a bust…He was on a team with no running back and no offensive line. His injuries were a result of the lack of line. Couch played well…Manziel went 3-11 as a starter while Couch went 22-37. Manziel was by FAR the biggest bust for Cleveland.
There's NO WAY that Bengals tackle was worse than Akili Smith...Or even David Klingler. On top of Akili being terrible (3-14 as a starter, 5 TDs, 13 INTs and and 13 fumbles in 22 games as a starter), it's well-documented that the Saints offered them ALL their draft picks in 1999 + a first rounders in 2000 and 2001 + a second rounder in 2002. The fact that the Bengals were so dead set on taking him that they turned that insane haul down + the fact that he was just so horrible as an NFL starter without question makes him the worst pick in their history, and they've had some BAD ones.
Yes PLEASE make a video about Charles Rogers!! I’m a Lions and Michigan State fan so I followed his rise and sadly fall closely and feel not everyone knows just how talented he was and how back to back freak collar bone injuries derailed a guy who was already dealing with substance issues. And the fact he was a good dude makes his story edge sadder, I do believe being drafted by the hometown Lions also hurt him, sadly had a lot of hanger ons, but yes, please do a video, thanks.
he was avery good dude ... Just not a #1 pick.... Joey Harrington or Reggie Rogers were way worse(or even David Lewis) ..... Charles was a predictable bust- he didn't go over the middle in college, how was he going to do it in Pros..? .
I read somewhere that Rogers himself said his biggest mistake was not continuing to work out hard after he was drafted. Maybe Jerry Rice & Walter Payton could have set him straight.
I sort of get why you picked Ponder as the Vikings bust. But you missed. Dimitrius Underwood. He might be the biggest bust ever. Signed on Aug 1st. Walked out of practice on Aug 2nd and never returned. So 1st round pick on a player who only attended part of one practice… that’s pretty tough to beat
Correct. We would also have accepted Troy Williamson or Laquon Treadwell. I also think Rick Spielman should have been fired simply for his coveting of Manziel.
@@richfitzgerald833 Manziel wasn't even the worst draft pick that year for Cleveland. Justin Gilbert was picked earlier at 8th overall and somehow did even less for them. Only started 3 games his whole career. Has 1 interception and 42 combined tackles total for his entire career. Was also off the Browns team that drafted him in the top 10 after 2 seasons, before going to their rival Steelers and only making 3 tackles in his final (third) NFL season. He also ended up having his career end with MULTIPLE failed drug tests, the second one being LESS THAN TWO MONTHS after his first failed drug test and suspension, turning a 4 game suspension into needing to be reinstated to play again, which he never did.
I gotta go with The Boz for the Seahawks. He went into the season as the hottest of hot shit, yet the only thing people remember him for is getting backed into the end zone by Bo Jackson his rookie year.
"The Boz" was a _brand_- better known for his Right Guard Sport commercials than his play on the field. Bozworth had nagging injuries from his college days at Oklahoma- so he was never going to be a standout player at the Pro level. One interesting note: at a road game in Denver, t-shirts reading "Hang The Boz" sold to Broncos fans were actually made by a promotion company _owned_ by Bozworth! That's some All-Pro level Marketing, for certain!
Boz was drafted in the 1987 Supplemental draft in June, not the initial Nfl draft of that year due to his letter stunt. Not sure if that counts for for this list.
As an Eagles fan I'd say Jalen Reagor, not only for almost singlehandedly costing them games, but the fact that Justin Jefferson was the VERY next pick as well.
Yeah, with all of the bad picks, mispronounced names, and incorrect information, like showing a picture of Jay Cutler while mentioning the Bears "seriously questionable draft picks, especially at the QB position", even though Jay wasn't even drafted by Chicago, this guy really "showed his range". No wonder why he tried to shill $500 to get people to subscribe. His content is utter crap.
Falcon worst pick was Brett Farvre : 1st round with 4 snaps in total. Bucs Bo Jackson: retired the next day after being picked. Chargers. Eli manning. refused to pay for them.
brett favre was a 2nd round pick that was later traded for a first, and eli manning was traded for philip rivers. thats pretty even if you ask me. but yeah bo specifically told them dont draft me and they did and they paid the price for it
@@wankerwacker7948 I'll never understand why he didn't like Favre. I mean, as a coach, you don't draft guys you don't like. After all these years it still makes zero sense to me.
For the Steelers, I would have picked Gabriel Rivera, who went number 21 in 1983. He played six games before paralyzing himself drunk driving. Most draft experts had us picking Dan Marino from Pitt to be Terry Bradshaw’s replacement, but he went 9 picks later
Side note on Heath Shuler: His contract was a type of contract that had never been signed before, and the holdout was actually more about language of the contract rather than more money
Can’t agree with choosing Tim Couch over Johnny Football. Sure, Couch was a #1 overall but Manziel came in with SO much hype and did absolutely nothing.
@@csnide6702 Manziel still torpedoed his own career. Yes the Browns did very little right to help out but they would have at least given him chance after chance to get it right if he had even faked making an effort at it.
@@davet2459 I have to agree there - his entire pro career he did n't do himself any favors off the field..... But my thing was - on the field he wasn't THAT bad & brownies didn't give him the attention he needed.... Couch was never going to be a NFL star - where Johnny COULD have been but NOBODY seemed to want him to succeed - not him - not the media - not the team....
“The incredible bulk” also had a horrible opioid addiction like Charles Rodgers, overcame it and came back to play for the colts for a season. He retired after that year because he knew he would be unable to play offensive line every week without painkillers
I'm a Colts fan. He was a pretty good lineman for us that year. Maybe not to the level of a second overall pick. But he wasn't trash like the video says.
Not exactly correct. He hurt his shoulder I believe and it required surgery. And the doctors told him he’ll most definitely need to be on pain pills if he wants to continue to play
Justin Blackmon is one of those names that will, as a football fan, forever sit in my heart for the darkness/cloud that seem to follow that young man. Last I had heard of him he was in a dark bar laughing at the thought of ever coming back to the league. I really hope that he gets help.
Hopefully it's just that he doesn't wanna play..He was really quite good rookie yeah he had 850 yards in 14 games and 420 in just 4 games the next year.
Adam “Pac-Man” Jones was not a bust. Not even close. Actually had a semi-successful stint with the Bengals. Guy was an absolute beast in the return game!
Pac-Man was a beast hate him I love him he was a shut down CB he just couldn’t leave the streets behind but don’t ever say Adam Pac-Man Jones was a bust
I really feel like Taco was a bigger let down for the Cowboys but I do get picking Mo as a worse choice. I was so stoked the year we took him. I still have his Dallas jersey hanging up. Then he just didn't show up like he did in college. Ah well. Taco though, just never seemed to even deserve first round pick status.
For Seattle I would go with another 1st round draft pick - #15 overall in 1991, QB Dan McGwire, brother of MLB slugger Mark. He was a tall immobile QB forced on Coach Knox by owner Ken Behring who thought the 6'-8", 240# QB would be great. He started just five games in his career, throwing 2TDs and 6 INTs. The bad part is this incident forced Knox, the greatest coach the Hawks had ever had at the time, to move on the next season. Making matters worse, and why this is one of the worst picks in the teams history, is the fact that the guy Knox wanted to draft, that Ken Behring vetoed insisting on McGuire instead, was a QB named Brett Favre. So not only was the pick crap but it cost the Seahawks their coach AND a future HOF QB. When you look at the selection of Mirer in 1993 at #2 there were no other QBs at all...at least not that showed any promise. The next QB taken was Billy Joe Hobert in the 3rd round. After that it was Mark Brunell in the 5th round and while that would have been nice nobody would have figured he would be a great NFL QB. So while Mirer was not a great pick the Hawks didn't have much of a choice. It was either trade down and hope he was there when you picked or pick something other than a QB that they desperately needed or pick the only #QB left worth a first round pick. If they traded down there was a good chance someone else would take him because there were no other QBs in this draft after him. So his value was inflated. Thus they used the #2 pick on a guy worth the #10 at best.
@@busterlafrance1671 Not at all. He was a mid round pick for Seattle because we got him by winning the #1 pick in the supplemental draft that was done like a lottery back then. So we just lost our first round pick the next year. If Bozworth had been in the regular draft the following year, he would have been the #1 pick overall. He also was very good for the first two years before a shoulder injury cut his career short. It is too bad he wasn't able to avoid the injury and have a longer career but he was not a bust as any team in the NFL would have taken him, especially with a mid first round cost.
@@katalina256 True, but I am fairly sure he really thought McGuire was going to be great. He had a great arm and could hit targets 60+ yards away without issue. He went to SD State and there were all kinds of highlights of undersized WAC linebackers hanging all over McGuire while he completed passes from the pocket, looking like an uncle playing football with his nephews. Behring actually had it in his mind that this would happen in the NFL as well.
Let's not forget Owen Gill, a second round draft choice (Hawks didn't have a first round pick that year) who was cut during training camp for a complete lack of effort. Dude took his signing bonus and called it a career.
I don’t think players who got taken out because of injury should be considered busts, just unlucky. Busts to me is people being touted for how great they are, then absolutely sucking, like Paxton Lynch, Tony Mandarich, JaMarcus Russell etc. But I’m just one voice.
Having been a South Bend native my whole life (my username should give it away, lol), I was not surprised Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen was a bust. He started for so long for us, but you could just never fully trust his decision making.
Quite a few on this list because of injuries and not their fault. Blair Thomas is a great example. He had a horrific knee injury at Penn State and the fact that he came back from that and was drafted at all is amazing. No Penn State running back ever played with more heart. He was one tough baller who could play. I wouldn't call him a bust.
I would like to see an update on the Twin brothers who played for the Seahawks, one twin was born with only one arm but they both were gr8 ballers. The brotherly bond & commitment to each others success was pretty cool & last I heard they were w/ Seahawks and still had not found the set of twins they were hoping to find to date & marry someday.
Shows how consistently good my panthers have been at drafting. Our biggest bust was not only just the 27th pick, he also wasn’t even a bust because of his on the field play. Also we’ve been able to get some steaks in later rounds like Josh Norman. Too bad we still have 0 super bowls😥
@@matrixmann7954young isn’t a bust. Thielen is his WR1 which is laughable and he has the second to last ranked offensive line. Young has honestly played extremely well considering the players he’s been surrounded with, especially the coaching.
I don't view Tim Couch as a bust. I think with most other teams in the league, Couch would have succeeded. I think Cleveland was not able to give Couch any help at all, which led to him being labeled as a bust.
You know it was a bad sign when your round 1 draft pick holds out. I remember it clearly when it happened with the Raiders; we Raiders fans were excited to get JaMarcus Russel, then really concerned when he held out. Sure enough, he ended up being a massive disappointment. It doesn't always happen though. If I recall correctly, Joey Bosa held out, but... well... he's a monster, so yeah.
It was weird that the Raiders didn't give him everything immediately. Do you remember Andrew Walter the year before? My personal pick for worst QB in NFL history, worse than Peterman. Russell was actually an upgrade even in hindsight...just the cost was horrific. Everyone fell in love after the LSU Bowl Game that year. I preferred Joe Thomas then Drew Stanton 2nd round...who hilariously did turn out as the best QB of that Class even with playing for the teams he played for.
Steelers, 1983 draft, was Senior Sack Gabe Rivera. He was a nose tackle out of Texas Tech. He really was spectacular. 6'7" 300 lbs. runs 4.8 40. Sadly, between Preseason and the beginning of the season, he was in a car accident where he was thrown through the windshield of his Datsun z 38 and broke his neck, paralyzing him for the rest of his life. He never played a regular season game. He did create a foundation and did a lot of work with spinal cord injury patience. He was truly a quality champion. He passed away in 2018. The city of Pittsburgh was rocked by this accident and later loss. Couldn't help but think of him when Ryan Shazier got hurt.
Dayne ran behind a powerhouse o-line at WI that opened holes for him, not so with the Giants. I was at UW at the time, and he was as well known for his parties as he was his production. Great guy, great college player, but yeah, not much of a pro career.
David Carr was not a bust. He went to a really bad team where they actually allowed their QB to be sacked 76 times which is a record. I used to watch Carr take beatings almost every game and I'm surprised he didn't get seriously injured.
A bust is a bust is a bust, regardless of the circumstances, be it injury or lack of support or lack of development in the pros. Every player drafted into the NFL was very talented at the collegiate level.
@@kramalerav Every player actually is not as talented as they seem hence why NFL teams have scouts that study players. Some players appear far more talented then they are when they are have a strong supporting cast around them. Some players mature quicker then others but once they reach the NFL it is leveled out so that player does not have the upper hand anymore.
I remember hearing how great Kevin White was going to be at WR. I think you really undersold what a bust is by choosing Trubisky because he at least had a good year and started for 3 or more seasons. Kevin White was a top 5 draft pick that never even played.
As a WVU fan, I really hate to see how Kevin White’s career turned out. He was a monster here but couldn’t stay away from injuries in the NFL. Sorry you guys were in the receiving end of that. He really could’ve been a hell of a receiver
This thread is all over the place. The video did pick White as the bigger bust over Trubisky. Even when White was healthy in the NFL, he was terrible. Dexter McCluster was never drafted nor ever played for the Bears.
Pacman Jones may have been troubled, but he was far from a bust. The Titans selected Isaiah Wilson 29th overall in 2020. 2 years later he’s only getting reps with the Giants practice squad. Sounds like a bust to me.
Pacman was good with the titans, i agree. First db i seen as a teen out run a wr for a beautiful int on an underthrown ball. Looked like he was the wr lol
The steelers have a lot of potential players: Gabriel Rivera: Who they selected instead of Dan Marino that only played 5 games as a DUI crash paralyzed him. Jamain Stephens: The first day of training camp his 2nd year he was cut for being out of shape. Devin Bush: 3 picks surrendered to draft a bust in the top 10
If you're going back to 1990 for NY teams, Ron Dayne is in no way the Giants' worst #1 pick. In 91 they drafted Jarrod Bunch, who I last saw playing a bouncer on TV. The following year, they picked at TE named Derek Brown, who was similarly obscure. There was also Thomas Lewis, a failure of a wideout (my personal favorite memory of Lewis is reading an interview with the Giants GM while watching a game; I read a quote stating that the team still had confidence in the underperforming Lewis, only to look from the paper at the TV screen to see Lewis bobble a catch into the arms of a defender for an interception). Just a few years ago, they used a first round pick on a DB Deandre Baker, who is now out of football, and might have been their smartest first round pick that year, the other #1s being Daniel Jones and Dexter Lawrence. Put it this way - of the NY Giants four Super Bowl winning teams, only TWO RB & WR taken in the first round (out of at least 20 such picks since the 80s) made any sort of contribution whatsoever.
IMO Troy Williamson was a much bigger bust for the Vikings. I will never forget him dropping a wide open pass with literally no defender near him to cost an important game.
Being a Titans fan we have some many examples of " Draft Bust" the idea that you would pick TNA Champion Adem Pacman Jones is insane. Dude was must watch on Kick returns. Is still a regular talking head for Football shows. L +1 🤡🤡🤡🤡
Another bad thing for the Rams: when they decided to draft Phillips, they decided the running back they had for three years was finished and washed up. So they sent him and a third round pick to Pittsburgh for a second and fourth round pick. Any yinzer can tell you that running back is Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis, as his number 36 is still on the jerseys of Steelers fans today.
David Carr went to a new team that had no offensive line to protect him. That man took a beating. If he had gone to a better team, he might had a chance.
I'd probably call Jake Locker a bust over Vince Young but both are in the conversation, and both are bigger busts than Pacman. I'd have Isaiah Wilson as the top bust though.
I’d put Brandon Weeden for the Browns because Couch and Manzel were considered good picks at the time. Weeden was older than Aaron Rodgers and shouldn’t have been a 1st rounder.
I do believe Weeden is the only person to be drafted in the first rounds of two different drafts a decade apart. The 2002 Yankees and the 2012 Browns EDIT: he was the Yankees first selection in the second round. Not the first
To this day it’s baffling to me that the browns drafted a 28 year old QB with inconsistent success in the first round. But, then again, they had so many bad picks over the past 25+ years
As a Bears fan, we suck at drafting 😂 and it sucked that Kevin White couldn’t stay healthy. I don’t think he would’ve changed anything about our team but it sucks to see a young players career marred by injury
You could literally make a video about the Raiders' BIG-WHIFF misses on Draft Day. 2004: #2 overall, Robert Gallery (OL, Iowa). They could've had Larry Fitzgerald.... or take a QB to replace an aging Rich Gannon: Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlesberger were there, but I guess they were in love with their backup (Kerry Collins) 2005: #23 overall, Fabian Washington (DB, Nebraska). The love for Collins was real... next pick was QB Aaron Rodgers. 2007: #1 overall, JaMarcus Russell (QB, LSU). Already mentioned in this video, and he claims that he's still owed money by the franchise. Well, the Raiders need O-line help and he's well over 350 lbs now. 2009: #7 overall, Darius Heyward-Bey (WR, Maryland). "Who?" said everyone at the draft... including the ESPN coverage team, who didn't have ANY highlight material on the guy. Forget about other WRs on the board that were available -- Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin, and Hakeem Nicks taken by other teams respectively. 2010: #8 overall, Rolando McClain (LB, Alabama). Good Lord.... they gave up tons of draft capital to swap picks with the NY Giants to get a guy who wound up going to jail more than the Pro Bowl. As for the Giants at #15, their pick was Jason Pierre-Paul. 2011: 1st round pick traded to New England for DE Richard Seymour (pick used on OL Nate Solder) 2012: 1st round pick traded to Cincinatti for QB Carson Palmer (pick used on DB Dre Kirkpatrick) 2013: #12 overall, DJ Hayden (DB, Houston). Player with heart issues, but was "a feel-good story." Lasted less than two seasons for the Raiders. Players taken after include: Sheldon Richardson, Eric Reid, DeAndre Hopkins, Kyle Long, Xavier Rhodes. 2014 the bleeding finally stopped -- this draft, newly hired GM Reggie McKenzie gets it right: Khalil Mack, Derek Carr, Gabe Jackson, Justin Ellis, TJ Carrie all came from this draft and formed the building blocks for a culture change. It's super easy to rattle off this list and say, WOW WTF after the fact. The draft sometimes is a crap-shoot. But if folks often sit and wonder... how can a team go from the 2003 Super Bowl and turning from sugar-to-shit so fast... it all starts in the front office on Draft Day.
Considering Paxton Lynch has been a failure in _FOUR_ Leagues now (the NFL, the CFL, the short-lived new USFL and the rebooted XFL) I think there's a case for calling him the greatest First Round *BUST* of *_ALL TIME..._*
Same goes for Lawrence Phillips. He tried catching on in NFL Europe, the AFL, and finally the CFL. Trent Richardson tried catching on in the CFL, AAF and the Mexican league.
@@Tommy_WimmerIt was Philips' off-the-field problems that plagued him more than his performance on it- but I understand the sentiment. Kinda hard to top the absolute trainwreck that was Ryan Leaf- though... or the letdown of the hype train that surrounded Tony Mandarich. (That guy didn't even _PLAY_ his Senior season- he went to California and worked out on Muscle Beach with all the bodybuilders and Celebs like Lou Ferrigno and Arnie instead.)
Lawrence Phillips story is tragic. I wouldn’t wish the childhood he had on my worst enemy. Nobody should have to go through it. Both of his parents basically abandoned him
After being cut by the Rams, Phillips had a standout season (1,021 yards, 14 TDs) for the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe in 1998. In 2002 (his next-to-last year of Professional Football) he rushed for 1,022 yards and 13 TDs- while leading the CFL's Montreal Alouettes to a Grey Cup victory.
At some point he needed to take responsibility for himself though. He had a hell of a lot more opportunity than most to make something of his life. And was given a lot more chances than most to redeem himself. I mean Dick Vermeil treated him like a son, picked him up from prison even. Most of the kids that grew up like Phillips never get anything like remotely the opportunities he got. Think I will save my sympathy for the victims of all his many crimes and violent altercations....
Manziel deserves the bust label much more than Couch. Couch was constantly beat up by a terrible supporting cast. 2002 was a flash of potential when things came together but he got hurt because their line wasnt very good. Manziel was just an all around disaster with massive personal issues to go along with atrocious play despite having a better roster than Couch did. Same with David Carr.
So the Heath Shuler contract holdout wasn't about the money but more about the language of the contract. It was the first time any player had an option buy back contract made up in nfl history (common contract now)
The Saddest part about Jamarcus.. I was the hugest die hard raider fan at the time and if you were a raider fan back then you will actually remember most fans were optimistic about Jamarcus even after his first season and maybe even after that 🤦🏻♂️. I actually liked Kerry Collins
JaMarcus Russell was absolutely the right pick, coming out of college he looked like he was going to kick ass. He failed because of his attitude, not because of his skills. Everyone criticizing the JaMarcus Russell pick is doing it with the benefit of hindsight. Everyone at the time thought that he was going to be great.
@@thegrinch7989 Jamarcus did have the skills to be great...The only thing that made me a little weary at the time was the game that got him to be the #1 pick, the game against ND in the sugar bowl in front of a national audience, he lit up a very overrated Notre Dame team with a very average to below average defense. Not to mention he had NFL talent all over the place with Brandon Lafell, Early Doucet, Dwayne Bowe, Craid Davis, and Jacob Hester. I remember seeing him in a few other games that year, and he was very good, but never wowed until that last game. It also helped that the 2007 class of quarterbacks was historically awful, so given his arrange of skills, anyone who needed one who had a top 5 pick would've probably taken him.
Great video overall but how is a QB that led an expansion team to the playoffs on his rookie contract, a bigger bust than Johnny Football? He did literally nothing but cause issues for the browns his entire time there.
It's the same situation with baker imo. Takes team to playoffs then next year gets injured and plays subpar then all of a sudden people think he's a bad qb
12:59 What makes Rogers the worst bust in Lions history is that even if everything turned out fine and he didn't struggle with injuries and addiction, he was still drafted ahead of Andre Johnson, so even best case scenario Charles Rogers would be viewed as a disappointment due to how good Andre was.
Manziel's first pro snap was a penalty. He also got inserted by a GM calling illegally down to the sideline, replacing the starter on a 7-3 team, that ended up imploding and missing the playoffs. Couch got the Browns to the playoffs, with a duct tape and swiss cheese O-Line. He was out of football from shoulder injuries from being sacked so much...again, as an expansion team QB.
Wouldn't exactly say that Trubiski was a bad pick, He made the playoffs, won the division and the loss to the eagles wasn't his fault, he's only considered a bad pick because the bears could've picked Mahomes or Watson
Also you have to consider the draft capital they gave up to move up to get him. And as I recall he wasn’t even expected to go in the top 15 so they probably didn’t even need to move up…
Hmm, Chiefs drafted Penn State QB Todd Blackledge in 83, 7th overall -- they could've drafted Dan Marino, Jim Kelly... even Ken O'Brien or Tony Eason would've been better choices, they had at least a couple of good seasons.
@@travismiller4320 That's not true. KC drafted brodie croyle. He never won a game, but he was like 0-11 as a starter. When carl and herm were losing all the time. In the span you mention, KC didnt draft a QB in the 1st round tho. Over 30 years and no 1st round QB. Crazy.
Houston failed Carr. Never tried to help that man. Every week he was getting destroyed thanks to that porous offensive line. If he supposed to be your franchise QB why let him get destroyed?
There’s a Pick that Washington regrets as well, in 1996 Washington drafted Andre Johnson to help rebuild the Hogs O-Line, he never got a snap in Washington and he only played 3 games for the Lions and never started a single game. Another pick that didn’t work out was Pittsburgh selecting Gabe Rivera in the legendary 1983 NFL class, sadly Rivera was paralyzed during his rookie season and retired.
I am not a Packers fan but I am perplexed by those who call Jordan Love a bust. By that definition Aaron Rogers was at one time a bust. His book is as of yet to be written. I would agree however that he was probably not a wise choice.
As a Bears fan, I'm terrified of Love becomming the best qb in the NFC north.... it just always seems to go that way with us hahaha. Praying for Fields, though
Honestly I feel like Rosen could have been good because the Cardinals didn’t give him another chance he was on a terrible cardinals team that only decided to get talent after Murray was drafted

So unfortunate because I really thought he could be a future super star.
carr was good
couch was ok given the right team program who knows.
Carr had Andre Johnson?
@@JoJoWoody And about 1.2 seconds to throw to him.
The thing about JaMarcus Russell i'll never forget is that the he didn't come to film meetings and demanded they give him video to watch at home. They'd always ask him "did you watch the film?" and he'd always say "yes, of course I did."
Some of the times however, they gave him BLANK VHS tapes!
I only watched this to look for JaMarcus Russell. he got that signing bonus and didn't give a shit after that. what a waste!
Thing I never forget was when he showed up to summer camp at 300+ lbs as a QB.
I like how the Jordan Love pick is looking so much better. 30 TD to 11 INTs. Yeah we will take that over a lot of other QBs and first year starters

He turned out to be a good guard like you said can't call him a bust he was a serviceable player but all the hype on him was awful

Any player drafted that high who is then released after only three seasons is a BUST, regardless if they played well later on for another team.

That's all true yet I'd like to point out that Vikings usually split the series with GB every year, even when they are not playing well
Yea yea yea
Their franchise would be way different with Rodgers, Imagine justin Jefferson playing with him along with dalvin cook, Scary sight 😤
Vikings biggest bust was 1999 dimitrius Underwood.
Why so they can have 1 ring
As much as I enjoy your content my man, I have to disagree with many picks:
Texans: Nope, Amobi Okoye is their real biggest bust.
Oh Man Vernon Gholston Was Awful 6th overall and Absolutely nothing to show for it
If Ogbeuhi had been any good, the Bengals would probably never have had Burrow. But yeah, Smith, then Klingler, then Carter were worse. And now that I think about it, John Ross, too.
Definitely agree 👍
Thank you
My Browns is Mr. 3 Yards Per Carry Trent Richardson
Tim Couch was not a bust…He was on a team with no running back and no offensive line. His injuries were a result of the lack of line. Couch played well…Manziel went 3-11 as a starter while Couch went 22-37. Manziel was by FAR the biggest bust for Cleveland.
Trent Richardson
Or even Brady Quinn. I was also shocked that of all the dudes to pick it was couch.

That's the oldest news I've ever heard.
He looked like a pro in college. Super talented.
he was avery good dude ...
Maybe Jerry Rice & Walter Payton could have set him straight.
this is sad news i knew about rogers, just not the details.
🤣 true that !
Troy Williamson
Correct. We would also have accepted Troy Williamson or Laquon Treadwell. I also think Rick Spielman should have been fired simply for his coveting of Manziel.
To be fair Tim Couch actually was not bad but was just on a bad browns team so I still would have went with Jonny “football”

@@richfitzgerald833 Manziel wasn't even the worst draft pick that year for Cleveland. Justin Gilbert was picked earlier at 8th overall and somehow did even less for them.

Rick Mirer was far worse than the Boz.

Two words Bobby Carpenter.
I would think for Seattle, Brian Bosworth would have been a good choice.
Ken Behring was actively tanking so he could lose fan interest and move the team to southern Cali, so I am not surprised to hear he was behind this.
@@katalina256 True, but I am fairly sure he really thought McGuire was going to be great. He had a great arm and could hit targets 60+ yards away without issue.
Johnny football was a far worse pick than couch, and a worse person to boot
What about Courtney Brown Brandon Weedon Brady Quinn and Yea Johnny Football
I agree. Manziel should easily be on this list, not Couch
Couch and David Carr are similar tales. Good players, terrible teams and situations
I agree, expansion team's 1st pick can't be a bust especially at qb. I would throw Treant Richardson name out there too for the Browns.
I would definitely like a Charles Rodgers video!! I had no idea that he passed away. Keep Up The Great Video Content!!! Thanks
I think that russel signed before the rookie wage scale
@@samuelschmitt853 He did but it still was a really bad sign of things to come.
@@justinlast2lastharder749 Andrew Walter was nowhere near as bad as Kim McQuilken as a QB
every team you get a hold out on sucks.
Lawrence Phillips… ahh.. I love when the world cleans itself out.
The problem with Ron Dayne was he was just so damn slow
He thought he was Barry Sanders in the body of Jerome Bettis lol
He was also worn down in college, all of them damn yards he achieved.
@@Andrew-or5jv I'm not a Bears fan. I remember being disappointed when they took him is all. Him and Dexter McCluster.
What? The vid picked Trubisky and not White.
This thread is all over the place. The video did pick White as the bigger bust over Trubisky. Even when White was healthy in the NFL, he was terrible. Dexter McCluster was never drafted nor ever played for the Bears.
22:16 Mr Sam Ponder😂😂
Some of the failures of these guys are because they were never surrounded by good teammates and they had no support.
I'm still baffled about how badly Aguayo failed after excelling at FSU. Weight of expectation and shattered confience I guess
Wow this must’ve been an elaborate project. Thanks for the content as always 🤘🏼
The steelers have a lot of potential players:
Gabriel Rivera: Who they selected instead of Dan Marino that only played 5 games as a DUI crash paralyzed him.
Jamain Stephens: The first day of training camp his 2nd year he was cut for being out of shape.
Devin Bush: 3 picks surrendered to draft a bust in the top 10
Calling Jordan love a bust aged like milk 😂
Love looked awesome in late 2024
Put it this way - of the NY Giants four Super Bowl winning teams, only TWO RB & WR taken in the first round (out of at least 20 such picks since the 80s) made any sort of contribution whatsoever.
look ely apple who talked crap on social media for being drasfted to the giants he was from cherry hill nj wanted to be on trhe eagles
OKay, coming up on the end of Lawrence's and Brown's best seasons as pros, this post aged badly in that respect.
Ron Dayne...what a joke.
IMO Troy Williamson was a much bigger bust for the Vikings. I will never forget him dropping a wide open pass with literally no defender near him to cost an important game.
which time? it happened more than once....more like about once per game
You should ABSOLUTELY spotlight the Charles Rogers story. Please tell his tale.
As bad as Marcus Smith was, I think Danny Watkins was debatably worse. Either way, awesome video
Yeah the fireman was the worst
Kevin Allen is easily the worst for the Eagles.
David Carr went to a new team that had no offensive line to protect him. That man took a beating. If he had gone to a better team, he might had a chance.
For the Titans I'd go with Isaiah Wilson over Pacman.
Yeah Pac-Man on field was a legend. Isaiah Wilson did nothing for us.
Or Vince young but I loved Vince
Idk man I would have to go with jake locker
I'd probably call Jake Locker a bust over Vince Young but both are in the conversation, and both are bigger busts than Pacman. I'd have Isaiah Wilson as the top bust though.
oh yeah.... Pacman is good player
Jordan love pick looks a lot better now, definitely more valuable than the available players mentioned.
Production quality is unreal… great job Mike
I’d put Brandon Weeden for the Browns because Couch and Manzel were considered good picks at the time. Weeden was older than Aaron Rodgers and shouldn’t have been a 1st rounder.
I do believe Weeden is the only person to be drafted in the first rounds of two different drafts a decade apart. The 2002 Yankees and the 2012 Browns
EDIT: he was the Yankees first selection in the second round. Not the first
Manziel was never good, he sucked and his time in Cleveland proved it.
@@joemcnulty6814go back to school. Commenter never said he was good. He said Manzel was considered a good pick
Khalil herbert was a steal for the bears
We feel you as a Texans fan.
At least we're not Cleveland or Detroit...☹️
Fun fact Seattle Seahawks have never had the #1 overall pick in the draft. They've had the #2 twice, the #3 three times and the #4 once.
Another fun fact is the Seahawks have the worst play call in Super Bowl history.
@@projekt679 Blowing a 28-3 lead is far more embarrassing Football fact.
A guy named Drunkenmiller involved in an all-out bar brawl. Priceless.
Having Jordan love in the video would've been a mistake. He didn't have a chance to start yet. Calling any qb with under 16 games a bust is a stretch.
You could literally make a video about the Raiders' BIG-WHIFF misses on Draft Day.
2004: #2 overall, Robert Gallery (OL, Iowa). They could've had Larry Fitzgerald.... or take a QB to replace an aging Rich Gannon: Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlesberger were there, but I guess they were in love with their backup (Kerry Collins)
2005: #23 overall, Fabian Washington (DB, Nebraska).
2011: 1st round pick traded to New England for DE Richard Seymour (pick used on OL Nate Solder)
2012: 1st round pick traded to Cincinatti for QB Carson Palmer (pick used on DB Dre Kirkpatrick)
2013: #12 overall, DJ Hayden (DB, Houston).
The jordan love comment didnt age well 🤣
Not at all 😂
Claiborne was bad but the thought of picking taco still makes me absolutely sick especially when TJ watt went the very next pick🤮🤮
If I recall, Fletcher Cox was on the board along with Watt when they picked Clairborne.
as a bucs fan and a gators fan I hated that pick and now I hate it more
Considering Paxton Lynch has been a failure in _FOUR_ Leagues now (the NFL, the CFL, the short-lived new USFL and the rebooted XFL) I think there's a case for calling him the greatest First Round *BUST* of *_ALL TIME..._*
Same with David Carr.
no he doesn't. Manziel isn't even in the top 3 worst draft picks you guys have made, he's just an easy target because he did so much off the field
@@launchbase4944 yes manziel was among the worst
Before watching, Jarvis Jones is the Steelers biggest draft bust…
Nah Senior Sack we should have drafted Dan Marino
So the Heath Shuler contract holdout wasn't about the money but more about the language of the contract. It was the first time any player had an option buy back contract made up in nfl history (common contract now)
6:12 this man murdered his girlfriend on my second birthday?! Are you fucking kidding me rn?!
Not to mention his career wasn't even half as long as Couch's
It's the same situation with baker imo. Takes team to playoffs then next year gets injured and plays subpar then all of a sudden people think he's a bad qb
12:59 What makes Rogers the worst bust in Lions history is that even if everything turned out fine and he didn't struggle with injuries and addiction, he was still drafted ahead of Andre Johnson, so even best case scenario Charles Rogers would be viewed as a disappointment due to how good Andre was.
This did not age well Jordan love being one of the biggest busts is crazy
Yeah, blackledge is KC's biggest bust, and it's not close.
From Todd Blackledge until Patrick Mahomes, no Chiefs QB that they drafted started for KC in a game, blew my mind to hear that.
Crazy.
@@whitewhale9012 yeah, you may be right it might have been first round QB I heard, I can’t remember exactly, I’m old and not a chiefs fan
Houston failed Carr. Never tried to help that man. Every week he was getting destroyed thanks to that porous offensive line. If he supposed to be your franchise QB why let him get destroyed?
Nfl failed houston to be fair
I agree with you on Seattle's Rick Mirer pick, but Brian Bosworth is a close second.
Senor Sack right?? That dude could MOVE and had really good feet. That was a tragic loss for the organization.
Rogers was going good but injuries got him but the lions could of had alot of gr8 players before rogers
Roger's was the second puck in the draft. How could they if gotten alot of great players before him?
I think my Eagles has to be Danny Watkins a 26-year-old firefighter with damn near no experience in football
