    So, as a Packers fan, I’m going to push back on the “Packers are the best at drafting in the 1st round narrative.” Don’t get me wrong. We draft pretty well, and most importantly, we avoid busts and wastes of major draft capital (i.e. Mitchell Trubisky, Trey Lance, Bryce Young). But we are not getting consistent Pro Bowlers in the 1st round. That is something the Dallas Cowboys have mastered. Their list of recent 1st-round draft picks reads like a Pro Bowl roster. I think where the Packers really excel is at drafting in the 2nd round and later. So many impact players in the later rounds: Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, David Bakhtiari, Micah Hyde, Davante Adams, Aaron Jones, Elgton Jenkins, Romeo Doubs, Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker, Jayden Reed, Tucker Kraft, Dontayvion Wicks, and Carrington Valentine.

    • @THADDEUSJAMIESON
      @THADDEUSJAMIESON 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      Very True! If you look at the picks before Gutekunst stepped in, the first round was oftentimes pretty bad except for 2009. Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver, and Greg Jennings were all second round or later picks. Sterling Sharpe was the last great first round wide receiver for the Packers.

    Big thing for the Chargers the past 10 years was that Telesco drafted really well in the first round but was absolutely bootycheecks at drafting in the mid and later rounds. This resulted in top heavy teams, with plenty of stars but no quality depth. Few good role players. Nobody that could step up in a pinch for an injured star. This is why the Chargers have been the off-season champs but nothing of value

When Hurney was here you know when he picked 1st round the player at minimum was gonna a a solid multi year starter, often than not make a least 1 pro bowl, and just recently made the HOF (Peppers) Dudes like Gross, Gamble, Davis, D-lo, Beason, J-Stew were all major contributors during the John Fox era, and guys like Newton, Kucehly, Star, Thompson, and McCaffery where a major part of the Rivera era, and we though that guys like Moore, and Burns would be part of this era with Brown, Horn (when healthy) and Icky, but sadly with McCaffery we traded the . One elite player isn’t going to win you ball games unless it’s Patrick Mahomes, but even then, a team like the Chiefs win so much because they find gems in later rounds, too - like Pacheco in Round 7 or Creed Humphrey in the 2nd and Trey Smith in the 6th.

    The question isn't which player do you want on your team for 4 years, the question is which player do you want to offer a 4 year contract (at the specific pick valuation). When you see these flashy picks in the first round, it's more about talent acquisition and hope for potential. The more important decision is how confident are you that this player will perform at or above the value of the pick and are you willing to give him a fully guaranteed 4 year contract.

    I can see why the Steelers were left out, missing on their QB, but Shazier in 2014, Dupree in 2015(admittedly slow start but still became solid), TJ watt in 2019(arguably best defender in league imho, only one other player has more sacks in their first 100 games than TJ, and that is legendary Reggie White), Harris in 2021 (three striaght 1k seasons to start career), and Broderick Jones 2023 who will start on the o-line this year, makes for a solid set of picks. Drafting isn’t the problem. Development is actually the bigger issue. In addition too often what is considered common sense is actually opposed to what has been well documented. Outside of the QB it has been well documented the elite teams in the NFL have a top notch OL with depth and a elite SR/TE as your primary receiving target. Yet for some reason its pretty much expected that 3 WR’s will be picked in the top 10 despite the fact you have a generational TE receiving prospect and one of the best OL classes. So good luck.

    I think the best way to determine who is the best at drafting, is to find out which teams hit on their top four or five picks most consistently. Only looking at first round picks isn't telling enough of the story.

    The Packers aren't that great at first-round picks, but they are amazing at getting players in round 2 and later, especially more recently. Just in 2023 alone they got Luke Musgrave and Jayden Reed in the 2nd, Tucker Kraft in the 3rd, Dontayvion Wicks in the 5th, Karl Brooks in the 6th, and Carrington Valentine in the 7th, and all of them were major contributors last year. In 2022 they got Christian Watson in the 2nd, Sean Rhyan in the 3rd, Romeo Doubs and Zach Tom in the 4th, Kingsley Enagbare in the 5th, and Rasheed Walker in the 7th.

    The later rounds are where great teams are made, there is no way the Seahawks are bottom five if you look at the whole draft and not just the first round.

    Dallas isn't publicly owned but enjoys a similar advantage the Packers have when it comes to drafting with the role Jerry Jones has. There simply isn't a GM on the hot seat that has to prove in a couple of years he is worth the position by winning lots of games and show results. The security these two franchises have because they can always think long term is a big reason they're at the top of this list

    • @jimbo0386
      @jimbo0386 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe but Jerry Jones has also thrown hundred of millions around trying to win NOW.. for the past like 6 years, they've always been good for it bit they've sold out trying to get to the superbowl recently and flamed out, it could hurt them later, probably not though honestly

    I'm starting to believe 99% of the issue is the teams management and factors like location and of course coaching and money. Like some of these players that are like hof caliber on a good team probably would get kicked out on a bad team after 3 years and blamed for all their issues when they're too cheap to hire an actual coach who's coached anything before or draft/pick up linemen or a legit reciever. And there's so many what if players that just went to shitty situations and flamed out, like guys who had all of it but no matter what they did it was futile

    I think the flaw with the pff article is that they were specifically looking at the quantity of first round accolades instead of individual draft stats. Carolina for instance probably made the list because they have been a mediocre team at best for so long that they have constantly gotten higher first round picks which are more likely to make accolades, along with this, the same argument of mahomes to the chiefs can be made about if stroud went to carolina, like stroud had two bonefied pro bowl level wide outs in dell and collins, a pretty good tight end in shultz, and singletery who had a breakout year. Personally i dont think Stroud would have been nearly as good if hes having to pass the ball to adam thielan

    Pro Bowl voting is done by the casual fans. Most of the guys they know are the ones they see drafted in the 1st round or so of the draft. Many times they will just a pick a they've heard over instead of the most deserving player, in many cases they've never even heard of

    Can you really argue the Ravens should be in the top five of this list when the number one issue with their roster is one that they have spent four first round picks on? In the last 10 years, they have spent four first round picks on wide receiver and tight end, and yet every single year the argument is that the Ravens don't have enough talent at pass catcher.

    The thing about O line and D line is guys dont need a solid team around them to be a good player. You can be the best O lineman on the worst team and it would be the same as on a great team... for a QB, RB, WR... you need to be on a decent team or else you're gonna struggle
