Thanks for posting this. I know it adds a lot more work to think about when and what to record for a DIY. I see this was posted in 2015, but when you show the diverter valve it looks like the old version C with the diaphragm, though they were replaced around 2012 with a piston type (because the diaphragm is prone to tearing), and then then they made a revision D with different air flow fins. Just thought I'd comment so searches will pick up on the question of the DV.

Should of drained the coolant from the radiator first before taking off the turbo, avoids the mess.

You don't have to remove axel, once you take your wheel off, cover and discharge pipe. Unbolt engine mount, Top passenger side and torque mount, you can slide your motor about 4 inch to the front and that makes enough space to take the turbo out from the top. That's just another way, great video !!

+yourfast07 Agree 100% Although I didn't even remove the motor mount to get it out the top. It was tight, but it fit.
      Other time saving tips:
*Remove downpipe in one piece - disconnect at the catback and push on the catback to slide the exhaust sleeve off
*Try to remove intake in one piece (disconnect worm clamp at turbo)
*If above is too difficult, I usually disconnect at the top of the MAF (one worm clamp only)
*Disconnect as few lines on top of the motor as possible and just move them out of the way and hold w/ tie wraps
+ghostlyrich thank you for making this video. I didn't have the patience haha

and you can put those lower manifold rails on before you even put the turbo on.. in fact, you didnt even need to take them off. you just remove the top manifold nuts, and only loosen the lowers.. then you lift the turbo out of the bar slot once the upper nuts are off.

Regarding center hub screws: hex is 200 nM + 180°, 12 point with ribs on the inside is 70 nM + 90°, 12 point no ribs on the inside is 200 nM + 180°. Also, only loosen it about 90° (or was it 180°?) with the car on its wheels and only further loosen and remove the screw when the car is lifted. Never move the car without the axle in the hub or the hub will get damaged. Screw in with the car lifted and tighten with the wheels on the ground.
Good video! Thanks a lot. Was looking for info on getting the turbo out with the engine in the car.

Question. You said that the plugs on the turbo need to be swapped around. I need to know about the coolant return side. That is the side that faces the firewall when the new turbo is mounted. Unitronic had the plug in the top hole when they shipped it. Am I supposed to swap that plug to the lower hole? If I do that, and then try to bolt the coolant return line into the upper hole, the bottom plug seems to interfere with the line somewhat.. any info is appreciated.

    • @ghostlyrich
      @ghostlyrich  8 ปีที่แล้ว

i used the upper hole if you want you could buy a thicker copper washer :) i had tocrank on that one a little tighter but a thicker copper washer will compress only use a thicker washer on the part between the turbo and the hose keep the washer the same size between the screw head and the banjo

@@845_Mk6 I know it's been a long time since you asked but I come with real answers based on my actual testing of it. I don't recommend doing what I did but my engine is alive still. I data logged multiple times to make sure nothing was being harmed. Alright so here it is.
      Fuel-93 Oct
      Turbo f23t
Exhaust catless 3inch downpipe to aftermarket 3inch dual exit
Intake is custom, stock MAF housing, 6inch V-stack,
      Cts PCV delete
Snow 210 WMI(tested both with and without it on)
      S3 intercooler,metal charge pipes
I have tested cobb stage 1/1+ ,stage 2
      MODRENautomitiveperofrmance (MAP) stage 1+
All of them have worked fine with little to no timing pulled from knock, AFR wasn't horrible but did get a little lean at times without the WMI on (12.8:1) with the WMI on I had absolutely no worries at all. This was at 18-23psi using "top tier" 93oct fuel at ~480ft elevation.
I stand by recommending you get a proper tune,it will be safer and make more power. I noticed a drastic performance improvement after getting a custom tune from sneakytuned. Not telling you to get your tune from him but also not telling you not to.
I think the OTS tunes offered by most are conservative enough that you can drive on them with a bigger turbo for a while without damage if you don't beat on the car. I beat the shit out of mine with all the tunes with the f23t and other mods and my motor is still alive. Just because it worked for me doesn't mean it will work for you. Do so at your own risk, highly recommend you do as I say and not as I do. Get a proper tune be it a "etune" or "OTS" or a dyno tune.
