    Cool video; For anyone interested in some calculations, Pressure and Force are related, and not they're not the same ; for example, 20 PSI is pressure; 30 LBS is force ; this 30 lbs force,if the diameter of the diaphragm is, say, 2 inches, ( 1 inch radius), will correspond to a pressure of (Pounds per Square Inch) approx. 30/ (3.14x1) , or 9.5 PSI; with the same diaphragm (2 inch diameter),if you need 20 PSI of boost,the force on that scale would need to be 20 x 3.14 or 62.8 LBS; but let's not forget that the exhaust pressure plays a role also, it exerts pressure on the wastegate(inside the turbo/exhaust housing),and for that reason, final testing needs to be done under load,be it on the road or on a "dyno"; in either case the boost gauge tells you all you need to know.
    In the video, the 20 PSI and the 45 LBS allow us to back calculate ( not that it matters much...) the useful diameter of the diaphragm inside: its area is (45/20) 2.25 sq.in. and the diameter is 1.693 in; this should be the same as measuring the OD of the actuator(smaller dia. inside the crimp) and subtracting twice the metal thickness,possibly .062,if the wall is .031.
    edit at 06:05 you should re-set the gauge to read in the same units; you have psi and inHg there,and 1 psi is 2 inHg.

    I got terrible timing to try and test my boost issues. It is so damn hot! Car was hitting 18psi easy on my way from work yesterday, past 2 weeks it was hitting 13psi only. Replaced my Grimmspeed EBC and reset learning, hit 18psi right off the bat. This morning I barely hit just under 16psi... I am starting to think its an issue with my wastegate... Will continue to test.

    Do waste gate actuators fail over time because of heat soak \ heat cycles? And would heat wrap of the exhaust side of the turbo and down-pipe get the waste gate actuator to last longer?

  • @RaxDimmu

    Isn't this going to damage the turbine? As far as I know, the Wastegate serves to unload the turbine in case the pressure reaches the maximum allowable value?

    I'm new to the dsm world. Couldn't get my td05h to boost over 5psi. I parked the car 45 mins from my house in storage. Took one last look and seen that the bar connecting the wastegate. Was not connected to the turbo. Dumb question but could that be my problem? Also noticed that the pervious owner took off the boost silenoid. But it has a hallman mbc. Any help please. Thanks

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if that bar isn't connected then nothing is holding the wastegate flapper shut. I'm surprised it made any boost at all! Get that hooked back up and you should be good to go.

    Sorry to sound like a smart ass and please correct me if I am wrong.
    If you fit a manual spring loaded boost controller or a sensitive air pressure regulator in series from the turbo charger housing to the waste gate then the mechanical spring force to open the standard waste gate is irrelevant as far as I can understand it, because the pressure required to get past the manual boost controller or the pressure regulator is what determines when it opens.
    Sure if you dont have a manual boost controller or a pressure regulator on the line that feeds the waste gate actuator then installing a waste gate actuator with a stronger spring will result in more boost.
    But if you have a manual boost controller or a pressure regulator a stronger spring on the actuator is a waste of time.
    Your experience is highly valued so please comment, thanks I am a noob.

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you have a MBC then a stronger spring on the wastegate doesn't really help, UNLESS exhaust pressure is forcing the wastegate open, which is what was happening with me. 2:38

  • @neilscrivener5011

    if your wastegate actuator opens under 15psi and your getting boost levels at 20-21psi, surely its your boost solenoid that is controlling what boost your engine is allowed to run at?

    Hi guys, nice vids, i have a focus 2010 1.6 tdci 109hp and i have the same code coming up. I changed the solenoid valve and the egr valve as i had a stick open egr code as well. Not solved. It’s strange as if I accelerate to the floor in 2 nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th from under 2000 rpm the turbo will do full boost, about 1.1 bar and hold constantly until i shift into next gear at 3-4000 rpm, i have a boost gauge; if i try accelerating from 2000 rpm or higher the boost goes to 0.5 0.6 and if i keep my foot in it will go into limp mode. No sensor codes or other codes come up, i hear no sounds of air escaping anywhere. Any idea what can cause this? Mechanics are baffled also, thank you for any help, it’s needed

    Thanks for the video. I'm having a little tuning issue with my system not holding boost. I am a little confused about the waste gate actuator holding boost. My stock old actuator was holding about 12 psi of boost. When I attached a pressure pump on it, it would start to open at about 2 psi but would let my system boost at about 12 psi. I got a new actuator that starts to open at about 14 psi with my hand pump but only lets my system hold about 12 psi. Not sure how that works but I purchased stronger springs for my actuator.

    i have a 3000gt vr4, builds no boost at all, and if I hammer down the throttle it starts sputtering like crazy in second or higher gear but runs normal if I don't try and build boost.
    could a stuck open wastegate cause these problems. I tried pressure testing the intercooler piping and have some tiny leaks but nothing that would actually stop my car from building boost. any ideas?

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edgar Macedo Could be a wastegate, but that's a twin turbo setup, right? I'm not sure if it would build boost or not if just one wastegate was stuck open. That would be a good place to start looking though. Be sure to note when the problem started. Did anything change prior to the issue? Head over to the www.3sgto.org/turbo-engines-systems/ forums and post some videos as well! Good luck!

    I have a question about my external wastegate. I know your video was about internal but I figured I'd ask. My wastegate seems to be stuck open a Crack when it's installed because a metal ring that came with it forces it open. I'm not sure if that's normal or not. I'm able to blow threw where the boost line is supposed to go and there is no resistance I'd figure it would be the oposite? Wastegate has a 7psi spring in it and my megasquirt keeps cutting spark because of over boost protection set at 11 psi.

    Just wanted to mention that you / this test was Not a failure! It was a successful "Test and Compare" which is exactly what we needed to see. The actuator testing was a success and the compare was a success which showed us how to test and compare. It's important to test before putting into production and although the outcome was not as hoped for, this test proves again (as a reminder), that just because "it's New" doesn't always mean it's better! Thanks for posting the vid!

    The Holset actuator mod definitely works to revive older MHI actuators with blown diaphragms, or if you're looking to hold more boost to redline on any TD05H-series turbo where turbine backpressure is so great that the stock actuator can't pull the flapper closed as the RPMs rise. That results in the common spike/drop when running a boost controller on too soft of an actuator. ;)
    There are a few different pressures to the Holset actuators out there- you can't really know what you have until you test it, but I've found the actuators which come on the newest generation of HX35's from Dodge trucks (99-02) as well as some HX40's (noted by the "indented" top cover where the hose nipple is located) seem to have the stiffest springs.

    howzit, recently I blew my turbo on my 1.9tdi VW Polo , I had a new one installed, but now I have extreme turbo lag, in first gear there is no boost at all, and my car PING's when I reach 3000rpm's, but when I change to second gear , the turbo boost's normal , up to 6th gear there is no problem as long as I keep the rpm's above 1800. otherwise the car smokes and gets nowhere , do you think that the actuator needs adjusting ? thanx

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BlaastMaster That could be a lot of different things. Could be the wastegate actuator, could be a boost leak or even an exhaust leak. Check out some TDi forums like this one for help walking you through troubleshooting. forums.tdiclub.com/ I would start with a boost leak test!

    Just a question: I'm about to install a heavier Spring tension in my waste gate actuator too.
    My car has had an ecu tune and doesn't hold the requested boost. Again though remembering it has had a tune for the requested boost..
    In this video you have increased your boost (air) but have not mentioned fuel to compensate at all. Have you taken this into account somewhere or is it generally compensated for somewhere else?
    Limited understanding on modern systems but from what I do know this can can run the risk of leaning out and frying a motor... Can someone clarify.
    G

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gino Cella Yes, you will likely need to adjust fuel for the new boost. I tune my car on ECMLink for DSMs, so it's really easy to do. You can add boost and just keep an eye on your Wideband. If it is running lean, just stay out of WOT until you get the tune updated. Good luck!

    Adding more boost is more air and needs more fuel not to lean out.
    Advise for a tune if your ECU can't cope with minor change.
    Adding boost is not hard but there are other perimeters that come into
    play which should be addressed and you have not informed of the consequences.

    what sort of boost controller are you using. I'm aiming for 20psi on mine ATM I'm running gate pressure which is 10PSI. i'll be controlling it via the ecu i'm running (an aftermarket unit) and a 3 port solenoid theoretically this method of boost control via the 3 port solenoid should be capable of bleeding off all the pressure going to the gate

      Velocity Labs Hey same turbo setup I have. I had terrible spool and boost control problems, thought it was the Wastegate as well. I would hit full boost at 5-6k and it would spike to 23psi. I talked to JusMX and he didn't understand why I was having problems. He thought it was my flex section collapsed causing restrictions, then the Wastegate etc. After taking everything apart and adjusting the FP 18psi Wastegate with no changes I ended up porting the hot side and wastegate hole beneath the flapper. After that it spooled how it should and now with my Hallman MBC I have it right around 25/6psi. Although you just needed to swap the OEM one for the Hx40 setup to work, I wonder why I needed to do so much porting for my wastegate setup to function properly.

    Very useful. I planned on a new wastegate for my 2G, but maybe I'll start here instead. Thanks!

      DarkstarDCB Yeah, the holset mod is great. There's a great thread on DSMTuners linked in the info about it!

    if only us vw gti drivers could access our turbos so easily to do such mods ! on a side not i have a rattle coming from the actuators arm is it ok if i clip something or put abit of glue to make it stop rattling between the rod and the connector

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A clip should be fine as long as it isn't affecting the arm movement. Glue probably won't work due to all the heat.

    We installed a turbo on my truck but the turbo doesn't have a wastegate actuator so i hooked a return spring to keep the wastlegate closed. Will that have a bad effect on the turbo or the engine?

    As I’m driving my waste gate duty is at 30-90 % so I don’t hit target boost while I’m cruising unless I’m at WOT, could this be my issue?

    Does "I'm going to go ahead and swap out the wastegate actuator real quick" translate to "I'll replace the wastegate actuator."

    I’m wanting to upgrade my oem wastegate on my 14b. To a Kinugawa 18psi. Will I risk any potential harm to my motor being that I’m still untuned and no boost controller?

    Hellow, I have a question and wonder if can get information on? I'm wanting to put a wastegate on a twin turbo supra and are wondering if it has been done before? Cheers for anything.

      Yes, putting wastegates on a twin turbo supra has definitely been done before.

    Very well explained stuff in this video.... is there any way we can get the value of pressure required to open the wastegate by only measuring the weight to open it.
