  • Are you looking for a natural, healthy sugar alternative? Try xylitol-you can even have xylitol on keto!
    0:00 Introduction: What is xylitol?
    0:12 Xylitol and tooth decay
    0:28 Can xylitol cause gas?
    0:50 Xylitol and nasal spray
    1:04 Best source of xylitol
    1:26 Thanks for watching!
    In this video, we’re going to talk about xylitol as an alternative sweetener that can be used in place of sugar. Xylitol is a popular sugar substitute that has relatively no aftertaste and tastes very similar to sugar.
    Not only is xylitol an amazing sugar alternative, but it’s also good for your health! Xylitol has a low glycemic index so it won’t affect your blood sugars in small amounts. It also reduces tooth decay!
    Xylitol can cause gas and digestive issues in very large quantities. With a glycemic index of 7, too much xylitol can also affect blood sugars. These negative side effects are unlikely because you typically need to consume 50 to 65 grams of xylitol to experience any issues.
    It is important to note that xylitol is fatal in dogs! Keep your xylitol on a high shelf so there’s no chance that your furry friend will consume it by mistake.
    Be sure that your xylitol comes from a good source. Birch bark non-GMO xylitol is the best choice! Organic birch bark xylitol is always non-GMO. Some xylitol is made from GMO corn which has been exposed to the herbicide glyphosate. This is not the xylitol you want to consume!

    In Finland all of our bubble gum have xylitol instead of sugar, as the bubble gum was often marketed as something to help with tooth issues. Due to the positive effects on teeth, the gum is also given out regularily for children after school lunches :) Of course you shouldn't swallow your bubble gum, but the xylitol tastes pretty good when chewed.

      pustel pustel I had to find this out the hard way! Was a week on keto and everything was fine, except for my tiredness which I was going to fix with nutritional yeast, but then I decided to try a keto brownie recipe, which asked for Xylitol, and I also put Xylitol in my coffee that day. It wasn‘t much, 1/2 tsp in my coffee and about 200g for the brownie recipe, from which I ate only one, and I got the worst Diarrhea I had in a while. Thought it was related to keto since some people have this issue but it was gone the next day when I stopped eating Xylitol. I will now add it in micrograms to my meals to get used to it lol.

      You need K2 to make sure calcium from cheese gets in your bones and teeth instead of just sitting there. K2 keeps plaque out of arteries. That's why Berg sells that D3+K2 pill. The two vitamins work together for immune and directing calcium. But some people buy the vitamins individually and guess how much. I just take his instead.

      With dogs, it confuses their pancreas causing hypoglycemia and liver failure. As humans, there are many cons as to why I avoid eating xylitol. It may be ok for toothbrushing, mouthwash but consuming/ingesting is not healthy - especially on a regular basis. It can cause IBS, osmotic diarrhea, gas and dysbiosis. It ferments in the gut and disrupts flora which can lead to immune issues along with it increases phosphorus and oxalates which can cause kidney stones in some people. Ironically, Dupont is one of the largest makers of hardwood derived xylitol having plants in America, Europe and China. Xylitol is man made after taking xylose from birch or xylan from corn and needs to be broken down in a process called acid hydrolyzing. This requires a high temperature and a catalyst known as Raney nickel, an aluminum alloy - heavy metal. After this process known as hydrogenation, one is left with xylose and acetic acid. The acidic acid needs to be removed by heating it so it can evaporate. The resulting syrup is pure xylose which must be stabilized into a crystallized sugar alcohol by mixing it with ethanol. A few spins in a centrifuge creates xylitol. Chemists are experimenting with copper, wheat straw and fermenting yeast or sulphuric acid instead of raney nickel, as well & still not truly healthy. With the catalyst normally being raney nickel an aluminum alloy it can be harmful for those with MTHFR gene mutations that can't detox heavy metals which aluminum accumulates and can pass the blood to brain barrier causing Alzheimer's/dementia with long time consumption. Most xylitol is from China (usually GMO corn based) since they hand harvest their corn and have an abundance of corncobs they opted to profit off manufacturing xylitol. Birch xylitol is expensive and harder to find but there are a few companies in US like Espure and Health Garden. However, all xylitol products will cause gas and GI disturbances if consumed as a sugar substitute since it is osmotic that draws water out of the body and into the intestines causing peristalsis (the bowels to move).

      I was never officially diagnosed with that but had those symptoms so severe every night all night I could barely sleep. I've been taking Heather's peppermint oil capsules (make sure it's Heather's, they are double coated) twice a day on empty stomach, the juice of half a lemon in warm water on empty first thing in morning, and 2 Tbs ACV w/ 1/4 tsp baking soda twice a day.
      I'm literally about 80% better already after a month and a half!!
      And I eat really good, organic, very low sugar and processed, etc (but I do still have some fun here and there.. I still like my wine and organic chocolate;)

      BOBObro kake I usually get it at Trader Joe's (they have very inexpensive organic wine there too:), or you can find it at just about any grocery store in health food section. You can find it online many places too.. Vitacost, Thrivemarket, Amazon etc.
      And yes I have top of the line CBD oil ($100/oz..ouch!) and I find it helps moderately for anxiety but not always due to the nature of my anxiety (aftereffects of long term benzodiazepine and anti-depressant use). And I didn't notice that it helped my digestive issues.

    Hello Dr. Berg! What amount of xylitol in grams/mcg etc. registers as a 7 on the Glycemic Index?🤷‍♀️ Thank you. Just curious, as I enjoy chewing gum with xylitol to combat snacking urges but don't want to spike insulin unknowingly.😁

    • @andycivil
      @andycivil 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The glycemic index is a comparison with glucose on a per-gram basis. So, whatever insulin spike arose from 10g of glucose, if you took 10g of xylitol instead, the insulin spike would be 7% of that. It's like being able to say that balsa wood has 20% of the density of water: you don't need to know how much balsa wood there is, it's still gonna float.

    1st- thx for the gr8 info clips! 2 thumps up sir! I've recently stated eating better: (1 1/2 months in) high good fats, moderate proteins, & very low carbs.
    The issue I've had , tho it's improved much in the past month, still continues. Dry flaky skin @ forehead & eyebrow area & shins/calf area. Should I allow more time adjusting my eating before trying other remedies?
    I do feel gr8 & eating much less bcuz of no more cravings.
    Thx again for your time & attention.

    Hi Dr. Berg, my biggest body problem is my weight and now that I am over 60 I am loosing my energy. With Keto Diet I know that I can intelligently loose weight and regain energy. However I have a problem, I cook for my family, and they do not have the courage to follow keto, so I have to cook pasta and pizza for them, and that is quite uncomfortable.

    • @snorkchop8134
      @snorkchop8134 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe try a freeze dried grass-fed liver supplement. That's got everything for vitamins and energy. You have to start slow because it's potent , starting with one a day a week, and then moving up to higher dose each week till meeting full dose.
      I think you could try getting heirloom wheat to make pizzas for your family, fermenting the dough. That's what Europe does. I'm not sure about spaghetti. Heirloom wheat too--- but I bet that'd be hard to make from scratch?
