Let’s talk about alternative sweeteners. Trying alternative sweeteners when starting the ketogenic diet can make the transition much easier.
Notice I said alternative sweeteners and not artificial sweeteners. While alternative sweeteners aren’t completely natural, they are less artificial and less harmful than artificial sweeteners.
Keto snacks and desserts often have different kinds of alternative or artificial sweeteners. Trying keto snacks and keto desserts isn’t a bad thing, but it’s crucial to check the ingredients. Just because it’s labeled “keto” doesn’t make it healthy.
Out of all of the sweeteners, erythritol and xylitol* are two of the best. But it’s still better to only consume small amounts.
Monk fruit and stevia are also great options. However, with stevia, it’s important to make sure that the product doesn’t also contain maltodextrin. Maltodextrin is higher on the glycemic index than sugar. Maltitol, agave nectar, and functional fibers should also be avoided.
Including too much of these sugar alcohols (even the good ones) in your diet can cause bloating, fluid retention, diarrhea, and can upset the gut microbiome. They may also prevent you from getting rid of cravings.
I think sugar alternatives are great to help a person transition off of consuming sugar and for an occasional treat-but they shouldn’t be consumed on a regular basis.
*Pet owners should keep in mind that certain alternative sweeteners, like xylitol, can be highly toxic to animals. Sugar alternatives can be found in a wide range of products and may go by different names. It’s best to keep these types of products far out of reach from your pets.

Also important to note: Sugar Alcohols (the insulin-spiking kind) can be hidden under "natural flavors" too, given they are in _small smount per serving size._ Dextrose / Maltodextrin doesn't even have to be listed if it is used as a drying agent in the process of extracting a substance, which is commonly used to manufacturing "natural flavors".
If you ever wondered why 9/10 sparking water on the market with just 2 ingredients - "carbonated water and natural flavors" taste just as sweet as a conventional soda...

I bought a stevia plant several years ago. I've nourished it and propagated it into several other plants. I harvest fresh stevia leaves and dry them. Then I crush them up and use just a pinch of the dried leaves in any beverage I want sweetened. I know what is in my stevia.

    • @Trazynn
      @Trazynn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

At first about 6 to 8 months. That's because I had candida and it took that long for the yeast colony to starve in my gut. It was the cause of sugar and alcohol cravings.
Whenever I eat carbs these days, the cravings do return, but it only takes a few days of keto for them to dissipate again because there's no yeast colonies that secrete these craving hormones into my brain anymore.

      I had the same response.
I did keto with an 18-20 hour fast,
      and 4-6 hour eating window.
      I’ve lost a total 60lbs so far.
Another 20 to go, but that seems to be slow going…
But I’m not at strict now, as I was before
My sugar intake is almost zero,
But I do use raw honey & garlic, about 3/4 teaspoon, once, maybe twice per day.
Overall, I’m very satisfied with my results.
      It’s a lifestyle change!
I can see this lasting me the rest of my life.
But at almost 69yo, I’m not too concerned!😉

Xylitol’s anti-cariogenic properties (enamel protective effects) alone make it the best alternative sweetener you can consume, especially after every meal and snack. Just make sure you keep it out of reach from your dogs as it is lethal to them. And don’t worry about its effect on the gut microbiome, as it’s actually a prebiotic, and it’s not indiscriminately antibacterial. It selectively inhibits the cavity-causing streptococcus mutans through the metabolism of xylitol-5-phosphate, which is indigestible and detrimental to their survival because they are unable to process it, which starves them, essentially allowing the now alkalinized saliva to do its job and remineralize the teeth without the hindrance of acidity and bad bacteria.

You really brushed past Allulose without any recommendation or concerns.
Allulose IS sugar, but it's a different molecule that your body only absorbs about 1/10. It's naturally occurring in plants. I buy organic or non-gmo (it's often from corn.)
PS: I wouldn't habitually use _any_ of these sweeteners. I use a tiny amount of monkfruit extract or stevia in hibiscus tea, and a drop or two in some recipes. Otherwise, I don't generally sweeten my beverages, and I try to avoid desserts. Once in a blue moon, I make ribs, and allulose is good for that because it caramelizes like table sugar.

Allulose is the only one i use since, to me, it's closest to sugar taste without any blood sugar impact. Hopefully it's not found one day to be harmful. Monk fruit tastes like aspartame to me. I'd really like to see you do a video on store bought keto bread. I've tried two brands (one from Costco and the other from Publix). Both taste the same (not really good). Both claim 1g carb net per slice. However, both have similar impacts on my blood sugar- one slice causing my CGM to go from 100 to 180! False advertising? Loophole in labeling laws? I pitched both into the trash - if i get a spike like that out of 1g carb bread, i might as well eat the real deal.

When your gut is heavy on the side of the bad guys (gut disbiosis) the messages sent from your gut bacteria to your brain are mostly screaming for sugary stuff so you like and crave it. However, after you have done IF and other gut-healing things and get the balance back between the good and bad guys, the messages from your gut bacteria say, "Feed me something other than sweets, please," so you stop liking and craving sweets. I learned that from "Plant Paradox," by Gundry and "Gut Feelings" by Cole. Fascinating indeed!

Dr. Berg, really love all you do. I've really studied how some sugars are made. White sugar has a multi phase chemical process, unlike Coconut Sugar. I think saying they are the same are not accurate. Keep in mind (not a popular opinion) I practice metabolic flexibility on Sunday and sometimes weekends. That why I studied high carb sugars. So it may be helpful if you can touch on clarifying on these topics, respectfully. However I can't help but think that you're not going to touch on it, because it's against the philosophies of all the keto type doctors on TH-cam. If anybody reading this does want to try metabolic flexibility on Sunday or weekend, Make sure you try to use all natural sugars if possible or just fruits or honey. I do deviate it from it a little bit (holidays) but some can't tolerate this generally. I learned this from a doctor, fighting cancer using diet only. To pharaphase him: after a couple of months of being low carb, then you can easily do (without cravings) a high carb sunday with natural sugars like fruit (his rule was only natural honeycomb and fresh fruit on Sunday, along with the special keto low-carb diet with certain vegetables, to fight his cancer which went into remission over 8 years). So thanks to all reading this, and I hope you can gain better health/well-being with this information, and of course the knowledge of what we can gain from Dr Eric Berg and the others that do low to no carb and are helping monumentally on TH-cam💜☮️
