Thanks for the video Tony, I really enjoyed it. Inserting the photos as you talked about the different products was a nice touch. I spent hours tracing and cutting foam for my sockets, and even though it looks good, the use of space is not good. I'm definitely going to get the harbor freight. For ten bucks, they seem great. Thanks again!

Eddie Romero thank you and I'm really glad you enjoyed!!! Ya if that foam is done right it will make the drawers look very organized and very nice!! But ya your right they do indeed take alot of room. Thank you👍👍👍

Very well put together video, thanks for sharing your setup with us! It looks like everything fits into your drawers perfectly lol.
I start up at a new dealership tomorrow, where they provide the toolbox/roll-cart for their technicians. I'm currently trying to find ways to organize it to maximize space/keep everything looking neat; As I do have quite a large variety of sockets, ratchets, and other tools.
Never took into account the different depths of the socket rails themselves playing into the equation; I'll have to double check the length of my deep sockets in the top drawer before purchasing anything else now haha.
    Thanks again!

I experimented with several organizers and one day decided to experiment with a VIM magrail. The Magrail wins hands down as I was trying to squeeze every last ounce of space out of my US General tool cart(the 26in one). I was able to fit 3/8 drive metric short and deep, standard short and deep, star bit set, standard hex set and an additional rail for misc socket types all in the second draw. Could fit more but need space for other things besides sockets. Also bought 3 of the 6in small rails to organize ratchets, extensions and adapters. A bit pricey but damn my socket drawer looks clean. OCD tool boxes FTW.

Good review. I've been using the Craftsman plastic rails for some time now and have had no complaints, other than they only come in one length. I do like the use you have for the HF holders on your 1/2 in. drive sockets. I may have to look more into that for my impact sockets. Keep up the good work. =)

The first time I ever saw a socket organizer was when I was doing an air compressor repair at a boat shop in the San Gabriel Valley area of
Los Angeles back in about 1978. One of the mechanics took a rectangular piece of quality hardwood, routed the edges, sanded, stained
and varnished the wood and added a long drawer handle. He aligned the generic metal socket rails and screwed them to the wood.
It was a work of art and it contained every 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" socket he owned in the smallest area I could ever imagine.
I am a fan of the Ernst socket organizers, and I will have to resume the video to see if they are mentioned. These things are fantastic
because they can also be used to organize ratchets, extensions, and other socket accessories.

When it cools off a bit I'm going to cut down the 99 cent spring steel rails from harbor freight and rivet them to some sheet metal to make 2 row holders for my awkward sized 36" home depot tool box drawers. Out of the ones you showed I like the Ernst ones the best, use them for my tool bags in vehicles.

Great video about socket rails and storage. Very informative. I used to use the metal rails. Always layed them on their sides. As my collection grew, I had to do something different. I switched to the harbor freight trays. Much better. Not fond of the extra spots for odd sizes as it makes it so they won't all fit in one drawer. I bought 2 sets of each SAE and Metric as I have 2 sets of everything. One in 6 pt and one in 12 pt. in all 3 sizes. Deep and shallow....right now I have the HF 42" bottom box and use the top drawer (the big one) for my 1/2" stuff. The next drawer down on each side under it are for my 3/8's and my 1/4" respectively. That top drawer is big but just not big enough for all the sockets....and there's a separate one for all the specialty stuff...hex, torx, spline, O2,etc... might be time to upgrade...lmao

Thanks for the video, I use almost the same ways to hold sockets. The metal rails, I can't stand. The plastic version you can still find them at Sears. I'm not a fan of leaving sockets on their side in the case or tray they came in, mainly because of the dirt and debris that falls in between the socket and plastic causing that rust line. I do have the HF, and like you there is a love/hate relationship between them. I have been thinking of getting the Westling socket holders, now that it available in neon green and getting without the labels. Or make in investment on the Matco tool grid.

    • @Banshee365
      @Banshee365 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The VIM magrails are expensive but are the best socket rails by far. Super low profile. They have rare earth magnets that stick like crazy even through drawer liners. They’re also completely customizable with drive sizes and spacing. Where the cheap plastic rails have pegs that slide, the magrail pegs tighten down and the spacing stats exactly how you want. You can hang these rails upside down and they retain the sockets incredibly well.

    • @TonyTheTechnician

Guess HF bumped the price of the socket trays to 14.99 now because of your video- ;)
I have some sockets with interim steps that don't match the predefined ones on the trays, so they'd be orphaned. Maybe I'll just go cheap and try some 3" screws on spare oak flooring planks I have, just to see if I like the tray method. I don't like rails that secure the sockets because it's much easier with trays to grab and swap them in the middle of a job, as I can just pluck and drop them. I tried some Sears rails that require silly force to install and remove the sockets; I'd end up the leaving them all scattered during the job instead of trying to put them back as I go, and just put them all back at the finish.

Look for a system that does not come pre-labeled with the sizes so you can label them yourself.
I find I often need two sockets or wrenches of the same size to do one job, one on each side of a bolt. Or one shorter one when there is not enough clearance for both the socket and wrench. So I make sure I have two of each size as well as to ratchet wenches of each drive size, ½ , 3/8th and ¼ inch.
This also covers missing sockets due to the garage gremlin that keeps gobbling up sockets.

My biggest issues with almost all organization systems is they never fit my tools. The ones that come with a set, sure, those are perfect. But you look at a say 3/8 rail or tray, I seem to always have sizes the storage does not support. I tend to just line up my sockets, using whatever I can as dividers of the sets.

I want a magnetized rail that keeps them square-side up. That way they either spin (too big) or they don't fit at all.
Truth is, I often don't know what size I'm using. I have a bolt, I grab a few that look about right, and pick the one that works. When I put them back, they're often in the wrong slot.
I could make one like this with a board, a bunch of bolts and a magnet (and I might) but does one like this exist off-the-shelf?

I also use some pretty big wrenches so I go as high as 2' & am trying to figure out how to make my own custom wrench rails & get them all in one drawer. Honestly I'm now considering a bit bigger box as this one just isn't quite big enough for my list of all the tools I need to get into one box! Any ideas?
