    Hi Paula,
Thank you so much for all the effort you put into your videos. Your methods and explanations make a lot of sense to me. Here in Australia I am training a very easily distracted, food motivated Sheltie. I taught him heeling by luring and when he lost focus I would lure him back into position. I have know seen the error of my ways and will try reward when in the right spot rather than lure. What about corrections for inattention and how to fade food rewards heading to competition? Thanks again.

If you don’t lure, fading out the reward is relatively simple. You just give it randomly so they never know when it’s coming. Random reward turns your dog into a gambler. This time at the slot machine didn’t pay off and the gambler refuses to leave the game until there’s a payoff.
Instead of correcting for inattention, I change direction and correct to get into position than reward lavishly.
      1. Instead of correcting to stop bad behavior, correct to compel good behavior.
      2. Every correction needs a corresponding reward.

Thanks for your quick response. So if I understand correctly, When my dog disengages I would change direction away from the distraction, wait for him to get back in position then reward. I’ll certainly try it. Appreciate your help.

These is my problem that I had in dog training is luring with treats all the time. Now he thinks hes suppose to get a treat all the time and if he doesn't he checks out.

Retrain heel so you reward after the correct behavior instead of using treats to lure into correct behavior. Here is the link for the way I train heel.

Is training loose leash walking a similar process as training heeling? I don’t necessarily need my dog in a perfect heel to take a walk but I would prefer not to be dragged around.

You can train the same way. You don’t need your dog to be as precise when you reward.
