How to TRAIN a Distracted DOG using REWARDS and CORRECTIONS

- How to train a distracted dog using rewards and corrections. Will and Red have been using clicker training for a while and ran across a hurdle when away from home. Red would check out and not pay attention to Will's commands. In this video lesson you'll see the proper timing for corrections and rewards and a big transformation in Red's behavior.

One of the biggest hurdles facing positive only training is a dog's prey drive. Here you will see a dog that has a higher degree of prey drive and nothing besides a fair correction gets him back. With the guidance of balanced training and well timed corrections and rewards, we see a dog transformed from a disobedient dog to a very well behaved dog.
There is more to this lesson that will be posted in future videos, but you'll get the idea that a balanced dog training approach is the fairest, most humane training methodology.

What’s good treat for German shepherds
This was very helpful!!! Could you show "how to yank neck collar safely" without injuring the dog's neck, or what to be careful and not to do? I feel that most owners, incl me, are hesistant doing the correction simply because we have no confidence that we're doing it safely (not that we're worried the dog will feel pain from the instance, but we're worried that we're injuring the dog gradually without knowing it)
my puppy always pulls on the leash when he sees his doggie friends when i tell him stay he will stay by my side but whenever i try tl move closer with him he starts pulling. when i stop he will get into heel position right next to me but as soon as i release him he will pull again. what can i do?
my dog isn't food motivated, when he's fixed he's gone, won't eat the treat at all.

I thought my dogs was the only one. Shes very obedient at home and always on my hip staring me wanting to know what to do. But on our walks she needs correction, i just didnt understand why she wouldn't eat treat's while outside but this is a big relief.
I have been so diligent about consistently not letting my dog pull on the lead by stopping or slowing when she pulls. I’ve had zero luck getting her to look to me for instruction on where we’re going. Tried this today and after maybe 30 minutes of working this, I had the best walk with her yet. I don’t know who I’m more proud of; her or me! By the time we got home she never touched the end of the leash. I will say I really needed to make it interesting. I was changing directions, climbing onto large rocks, looping around trees. Life changing little tip!
Nobody wants to show the leash correction part of the process because it isn’t fun or flashy but without it the dog never has a chance to change its mind
This is the 1st time I've ever seen one on youtube . I when I trained my dogs I always used it.

@@vildeeo listen to Robert. You do not let your dog off leash until you are 100% sure he’s under control. And even then you do not let them off leash in the presence of other dogs. The leash correction must be in conjunction with a verbal no. After hundreds maybe more these corrections with the verbal the dog will react to the verbal alone. Just today my son brought his dog over I have two dogs. This is the first time they’ve met. I have a large yard with no fence. They were running around playing nicely when all of a sudden my neighbor decided to walk his dog across his property. My dog stopped and stared and I knew what he was going to do next so I said no. He was about 30 feet away from me. He looked at me and stood there long enough for me to walk over and put a leash on him. He still a puppy a little over a year old and I was actually surprised that he didn’t immediately takeoff. Because he had done that on two other occasions months earlier. The fact alone that my voice caught his attention, when he looked at me and away from the dog to me was a major step. His instincts were halted by a verbal command. And this is how it begins.
Gardenrabbit356 I’m no dog training expert by any means but e-collars should be used very cautiously and by pros no? Or at least have a trainer show the owner exactly how to use so not to accidentally hurt the dog and affect the dog-owner trust?
Oh my god , this works! My Hurricane isn't as responsive as this dog yet, but what an improvement after just twenty minutes. We'll do this every morning until she gets there. Thank you!

This is exactly my puppy’s problem. When we’re at home he follows me around, does heel nicely and many tricks on command, sleeps in his crate but on the walk I can’t get him to pay attention to me. Thanks for the video!
You have a puppy if your dog is not at least 4 months you should not use a collar to pull it to do not damage it. You have to just use a happy voice to make them look at you and treat the dog and every time it pays attention you treat it and later you add the "look at me", you have to build this connection so for few weeks or months you will need the treat
Agree with the other user, if the dog is too young then using vocal cues / treats / joy will be good enough. As an adult dog, distraction and disengaging with you is definitely worth the leash pop training! Edit: by young I mean under 4 months or so like the other comment said! Best of luck!

Such great content. Being a relative newbie in the correction arena, it's incredibly useful to see a true master work the long line. I still struggle to get a consistent "snap/pop" all the time and the correction ends up "mushy". I'm inspired to really work on this now. Thank you as always Robert.

I look at a LOT of training videos -- but this is by farTHE best. I've been trying to find a dog in these videos that's similar to mine. Sweet dog, does great in the house, or the yard, but step outside and you can't get her to focus and it's so annoying. "Bribing" with treats is not sustainable. Will definitely be trying this on our last big walk of the day. Awesome video.

I have a foundation that got me a rescue dog. This Foundation has positive only trainers- and this positive only training drives me absolutely nuts. Because it's exactly what Robert was talking about- it does not help with this distraction training! Thank you Robert this was very helpful.

Absolutely...borrow one from a friend...he may walk right through it like mine did for a weekk...my GSD just laughed and wanted to wrestle....went to a prong and that got her focus in 5 minutes......she knows heel...she knows it well now!
Dogs don't pray, but they do have prey drive

Great Video Robert.....THIS is what real world dog training should look like, an owner, with his dog that has some minor issues being shown the fairest way for the dog to understand what is required of him....I've never seen a positive only trainer on youtube fix a dog with a high prey drive and maybe some aggression issues...their just not being fair to the dog. please do more of these.

All you need is this one, haha....start inside so the dog understands leash pressure for 5-10 minutes...im hoping your dog knows yes/no.....great time to teach.....yes=dog where you want it....no=bad behavior, not paying attention and give a little12" QUICK pull....within 1 second..so the dog understands what hes doing right=yes and no=correct...then immediately say YES once responds...correct and reward within 2-3 seconds altogether...quick! (depending on the drive....you may need to step up to a 2.25 prong collar over the check chain/choker....didnt phase my dog and therefore was unsafe...like a flat collar for a pullling/reactive dog, etc...have fun!
The dog is smart, knows who the boss is (like just about every dog). The problem is getting the owner to be a boss without feeling guilty- that's the hard part...
I need some help with my dogs. They used to listen to me until my PTSD got bad. Now they only listen to my husband. And yes it’s my fault because my anxiety level is always at a ten from triggers that are going on in Minneapolis right now where I live so how can I get my dogs to listen to me again and not just my husband
It's more about being a leader and teaching the dog to be in a service mindset not the opposite way...which creates many of the issues I see with my clients.

@@nataliehernandez7149 my honest and best suggestion is hire a trainer who understands that. Someone who has been involved with dogs, dog training for quite some time, has references you can speak to as well as understands dog behavior through the dogs point of view not training a system.

I just adopted a young neutered male dog described as German Shepherd but his behavior is 100% Malinois! It's a good thing that I previously had a Mal/pit mix and was a horse trainer in my younger years. He's a beautiful dog but a handful, especially since he was on leash walking exercise for 3 months while being treated for heartworm. So glad I found your channel, as you describe the dog's nature so clearly and this particular vid is exactly what I need to work on.
Young and neutered? Sounds like a disaster in the making..neutering too early causes developmental issues in their physical and mental well being..

Very under rated dog trainer. Been watching your videos since I got my dog two years ago and it's been tremendous to helping him listen off leash and in several other behaviours. I have one problem recently where he leaves the yard to run to other dogs as he gets into too high of an excited state and won't listen. I think the technique you used in this video is exactly what I need to start getting him to stay relaxed in these situations. Since this is a bit more of an excited state is there anything additional I should be adding compared to the situation in this video?
Do some research on emergency recall. Once taught the only time it should be used is in an urgent or specific situation where the dog needs to immediately recall, unlike their name which can always be used. It's taught with a command like regular recall(my dog uses her name- attention grabber- and then the word 'front' -command: ex; name, front!) and while training you should always say yes for first eye contact and then say yes/reward for them coming to you. Start having them sit and make eye contact after recalling. Add in distractions like throwing treats, toys or having someone walk a non-reactive/uninterested dog on leash as a prop for practice. The command leave it is very helpful to teach this as it can be used as a correction while they recall, before the command. Ex: Name, leave it, front!
Living in the city and having a large breed dog I more use this as a safety plan if she gets out of the yard and runs towards a street or if there is a fence aggressive dog at our fence and I need her to recall to avoid conflict/possible injury with another dog/owner.

This works if done correctly. It’s important to measure how much to correct to not harm your dog. If it’s upsetting you, take a break so no accidents happen that YOU cause fear or harm to your dog
Also get the widest collar possible for the age/size of neck..ie 2 inch for a German Shepherd..wide collars spread out the force..
Robert---Thank you for your integrity and properly training dogs without bullshit clutter. You have helped me train about a dozen dogs and most recently, my police k9 GSD mascot....she will be 7 months next week and I implemented the 2.25 HS collar at 6 months...after proper leash pressure, inside training, etc. We are progressing greatly.....shes intense, hahaha...you'd love her and I have some hockey gloves you can wear too just to be safe! My son just picked up a rescue at a shelter in pa. . The sweetest German shepherd I've ever seen. They found him tied near a highway in Kentucky his feet were melted to the. Asphalt. dehydrated lost a lot of weight. Big patches of hair missing all over his coat. The vet thinks hes around 6 to 8 years old. I don't believe this dog was mistreated at all. My theory is he got lost and someone tied him to the Pole near the highway to keep him from running across. just left thinking someone would come along to pick him up. Fortunately someone did but it was like a week or so later. This dog had a good home he is so friendly loves other dogs loves other people loves kids My son had him over my house today and he played with my 2 dogs. Feel bad for the people that owned because they obviously trained him to be a sweet dog. He has had him for a month now and the dog is looking better but his feet are still bleeding. The vet has him on antibiotics and he should be fine hopefully in a few months.

Ahhh! This explains why my dog's behavior deteriorated when I switched to the short leash. Any corrections made that closeness seem negative, compared to correcting from a distance. Light bulb came on!
Wonderful again, thanx. Going to try that with my boy too. I love your videos, so well explained. My boy has stomach issues, the only treats he can have are his dog kibble. Would "tug" or a two balls work for distractions as well as with recall? Treats only work before he's been fed. I have a long line. I noticed the gentleman having trouble with the dog getting tangled, and you didn't. Was that because you held the line at the end, or because you are practiced?, does it matter if the line is between the legs as long as it's loose?

Thats a check chain/choke chain/slip collar...give it a try for a couple days...may need to go to a prong like I had to for my GSD. Start indoors, id teach yes/no if your pup doesnt know, hand feed yes/open hand....goes for it/smells at it=no...backs off yes and open hand/feed!!......have fun!
I used it just now woth my dog and a normal collar and for those 10 minutes we wete outside he mostly focused on me and did not get engaged to much like he usually does :) 😍
Gonna try it more next few days and see if it works
just be cautious because if the dog does not react to or care about it they can cause trachea damage
This got so funny at the end, I can't forget that time I told my kindergarten kid "good boy". I would leave my dog to watch them while I put things away after class. They always think they are free to move when teacher isn't looking. So this boy got up to walk around when I walked away. When that happens, my dog would get the kids to go back to their seats. Some kids get it, and they walk to their own seats, some kids don't, and they just get scared thinking the dog would bite. So this boy is scared of the dog. That day I saw him in the corner of my eye, he got up, my dog went to check on him, he looked scared, but instead of running away, he sat down. I don't know why there was just this almost like a muscle memory... I said "good boy" to him like I would to my dog. I just think well dog trainer trains the owner, and owner work with their dog, if there's just that one time you would compliment the owner like you would compliment a dog for correct behavior.
Wish there'd be a video with a Kuvasz because they're no ”yes dogs”. :) I mean, they reeeeally don't always listen, so I'd be happy to get tips. They're way tougher to train than German Shepherds, or other dogs.
My australian shepherd/great pyrenees hates the clicker. He so scared of it, don't know why but we use other methods than clicker. Love all your videos and that you tell it like you see it.
This video was perfect for me. That´s my case exactly Very smart 4 or 5 yo rescued doberman. He sits and stays perfectly only when it´s his meal time. While walking he´s on his own I don´t existe hehe He doesn´t pull but he stops only when He feels the leash. I will start correcting him. I don´t want a soldier dog but a little more attentive to me would be nice. Have a question. Would a choke collar would be best for this? Or should I keep my 6ft slip lead? And when he does pay atention don´t have to treat him every time right but of course click or say yes to him of course? We walk 5-6 times a day

Have a Rottweiler puppy who loves to get distracted on walks or outdoors. We always have been told do not pull the lead but I think this makes more sense as it seems the dog isn't being dragged but just a brief snap to reality
Having owner Rotties for many, many years I hear you!! Doing a properly timed correction can make a world of difference.
However a very young Rott may need more patience😂😂. But it does work!
does this lesson also help frustration reactive dog? When my dog is fixated on another dog its really hard to snap out of it with food .
