      Scott H one could easily assume the military selects for people with those traits. Doesn’t disprove my statement. I do think many people possess these traits but chose not to live by them for whatever reason.

    Discipline i read all the books got obsessed with them. Read them sometimes 3 times a week. jiujitsu 6 days a weak early rise grinding every day .my life has changed dont need to tell a sad origin story all i know now is the cold relentless power of discipline. Shout out to jocko im waiting for that leadership strategies book. Have a good day

    Competence is brilliance in the basics.
    Going beyond in terms of performance while adhering to the basic principles is what separates elite from the mediocre.
    A hard lesson I learned.

    the problem is that most ppl don't care to think like this more. they want their lives to always be closer to more of "it's my way or the highway" mentality cuz it makes them feel more in control of themselves and surroundings. helps them feel more secure with their lives, how they choose to do things, with the way they think/believe, not having to be more open minded towards too much.

    Leadership is a term that is oftentimes viewed in high regard, and rightfully so. Being associated with the title of a “leader” means that you have either worked extremely hard, been very reliable, been able to handle and overcome challenges, or all of the above. Despite the fact that being a “leader” is a great accomplishment, I believe that it is not for everyone. Being a leader means that a certain level of influence and power comes with it, and unless that power and influence is used for good, it can cause a lot of harm and pain to the individuals who have to follow the leader. For example, I have grown up in a very competitive atmosphere, as I have played highly competitive travel soccer in one of the most talented leagues in the country. With my experiences over the years with a variety of coaches, I have played for and been led by some very influential, and overall great, coaches. With this being said, I believe that they were able to use their leadership position to change the lives of so many young girls who were aspiring to play at the collegiate level. Now on the other end of the spectrum, I have played under some very poor leaders and coaches who have nearly made me lose my love for the game. These coaches all had one thing in common, and that was that they decided to use their leadership position to put others down and to reinforce the belief that they were superior to everyone else. In doing this, they ultimately took a great opportunity to make a positive difference as a leader and turned it into a chance to show their power and to put themselves on a pedestal. Like I mentioned before, leadership is a term that a majority of people wish to attain; However, being a leader is not for everyone.

    Throughout this segment I was often reminded of the quote attributed to George S. Patton about not telling people how to do things, but to tell them what needs to be done. The football coach shouldn't be telling a linebacker how to block. At the same time, the player has to know exactly what the play and the coach intends to accomplish so that he knows what has to be done and can make the decision on the field. Powerful mentality to keep with you in life.

    A good leader knows how to listen to those with experience and make appropriate decisions based upon them. A good leader will also have a greater vision and big plan in mind as they implement their strategy. A good leader will have contingency plans to use as back ups and alternative methods to accomplish all of their goals.

      @DarthYuYevon It's helpful to a certain extent. I've had too many I've had to contend with in leadership that were all talk and focused on the exterior but had no content, substance or bearing. I do have to admit on my end, being known to be very driven and focused as just being part of my nature and it comes out clearly, people know when I mean business and to either help or just get out of my way.

      @DarthYuYevon It's good that you are a hard worker, understand though, I am a severely hard core worker, doing things well beyond the scope I would ask of anybody else to endure, tasks such as lifting twice or more my own weight, working inhumanly long hours under physical and otherwise pressure, the "this is getting done no matter what, and done well", driven like a freight train moving forward and making no excuses for anything should something not work out as planned. I lead through example, that is a good military term I go by. Understand though, this also comes with what I do for support with others, from getting the job done, to making sure they are well taken care of, to showing them I care and giving them security in knowing things will get taken care of and never have to worry about me loosing my cool, my military bearing ever. I look and sound much younger then my real age, people can make assumptions due to that, and some never quite get it until I draw a line and put them in their place.
      Confidence is key here, not to be confused with arrogance, and power in the wrong hands is disastrous, too many especially in the civilian world let it go to their heads. I laugh at the people who are defined by the vehicle they drive, home they own, or any other material thing, as they snub their noses at the less wealthy I look down on them because simply buying something does not prove anything, and in the case of cars, I turn my own wrenches on them, and the rest, I build from the ground up, something in most cases far out of their reach and capacity. Beyond this, a good leader is thinking of solutions before and after their so called work shift, they are on the clock 24/7 and it shows, they are not defined by their so called position or rank. I remember when I was in the Army, one of the Sargents who just got out of "little" leadership program, necessary for advancement or rank tried to assert his new found skills to my group, it was all fake, prompted from his program, everybody could see right through it, and this PFC still wanting to take the ball and really run with it made suggestions along having us further our training in the actual field, pursuing actual combat training even though we were rear detachment, it didn't go over well since I was showing more natural leadership then this wanna be leader.

      @DarthYuYevon I only use putting people in their place as a last resort, and in almost all cases it's prior to cutting them off from any further communication and the rest. It really takes beligerance to force me to make that decision. People have bad days, rough edges, issues, etc. but we don't go there unless it's just apparent it's the only logical course.
      Anyway, to spare the rest here upon some further dialog in our cases of sorts, look me up, company name is Espresso Outfitters to continue this dialog. You have leadership capacity, I should not need to add more along that aspect.

    Great clip, I’m on track to becoming a Ground Defence Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force and have my Officer Selection Board in March. This has definitely broadened my horizons on the essence of leadership from two certified beasts. It’s currently three and a half hours till the next decade comes to pass and while all my mates are partying, I’ll be in the gym putting in work 🇦🇺 🇺🇸 WHOS GONNA CARRY THE BOATS?!

    Lee kuan yew is one of the best examples of a great leader. Often times he was divisive, suffered devastating defeats, did things that may of went against the will of his people, yet Singapore has become one of the wealthiest countries in the modern world.

    The only way you can have the moral authority to set a standard is to be the example of that standard
    6:43 don’t have to always be loved, have to be willing to be assertive/direct/clear/truthful (not passive/avoidant/agreeable) and be the stick in the mud when it’s necessary to get things done.
    7:06 Have the humility to take input/ideas from the team and not always have your way, it’s your job to make the final decision which is made up of the best inputs/ideas from the team and execute/implement on the ideas (and give credit)

    This passive “someone will step up, it’s a group im not the leader, no leader” bs is not working.
    There is no one that is stepping up so it’s your responsibility to step up.
    Think of it as practice for your business and for your future family household.
    Gonna have to start with by ruling with an iron fist because everyone has to initially be whipped into shape like bootcamp before work can begin.
    It’s to set the standard of what’s expected before the work can begin.
    Gonna have to be the ultimate example to follow, set the path and the standard and make it clear what it is by saying/explaining it.
    Define the goal/purpose/mission and explain clearly the inputs/actions that need to be accomplished to achieve it.

    Being a real, good leader is easier said than done. The variables of leadership within most systems including the military are not as complex as one might think. These leadership qualities are often written down and within the manuals and the protocols, HOWEVER, the application of these protocols are hard to apply. I have been a chief of a department for 6 years. My mistakes are usually when I don’t utilize what has already been a protocol or if I personally are not abiding by those protocols. I think that as a leader, these is a desire to make a mark (my ego told me to do that), but if I utilize the mission statement, follow the protocols and communicate them it seems to be good. The best epiphany I ever had was to realize that I am not that smart, or great…. But I can copy great leaders.

      They understand that there is a responsibility in seeing the equation as a whole and respecting that there will be problems down the command because we are always judging life on the information we are given so neither is wrong but to explain why them assisting you will lead to team success it isn't only ethical, since doing so is actually more or less beneficial to you. Tough love at its finest

    What kills me is my pops is a military man true blue. 35 years retirement at a master chief. I’ve learned a lot of the lessons that JW is always talking about. My pops and JW would get along great. My family is nothing but military personnel.

    9:03 depends if you'er dealing with pre-trained "experts" or at least competents. When you get there and you don't ask much but your machine gunner has just fed his sleeve through the feed, his loader passed out because of panic and sight of blood, and the observer who is supervising is spending his time brushing up on his union rules while taking a smoko break - and because of law, you can't fire or discipline any of them...
    or if 1yr hire and hits the start button faster than his supervisor can stop him, and crunches the machine and repairs take a month (parts manufactured), all because "opps, I'm sorry". Hard to develop "leadership respect for what they do", just got to fight the urge, after years of this not to go sit in the vehicle and cry. This is the "perk" of being business owner having to hire staff.

    The rebelling statement sounds a lot like the religious teaching referred to as obedience.
    Poor leadership from the past has to be unwound and re learned in the mind of the individual who doesn't get it.

      ...Yes in that bad leaders still do give orders that get followed. It's not done well, but followed. The Last Jedi actually showcases exceedingly bad leadership on every level.

      On the other hand...the "bad leaders" are useful because they show the troops what not to become. How not to conduct business.

      But lots of movies showcase bad leadership. James Cameron's 1986 classic, Aliens(which I've heard Jocko and Leif speak favorably of before), is pretty much a study in different leadership styles and essays on leadership have been written about it(and Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley is definitely a leader in the movie and a good one, at that).
      Aliens showcases spectacularly bad leadership with Lieutenant Gorman of the Colonial Marines(though, he does redeem himself near the end of the movie) and how he basically sends the Space Marines into an ambush(which gets most of them killed or captured by the Xenomorphs/Aliens), freezes and falls apart under pressure instead of remaining calm, getting off his ass and taking charge like a true leader and giving orders- and when he orders the Marines not to use their weapons in the fusion-powered atmosphere-processing station(which of course, some of the Marines, like Corporal Hicks along with Private Drake and Private Vasquez, don't even bother to listen to)he doesn't even bother explaining to them WHY.
      I heard some people on different websites say, well, Gorman was the one in charge, he didn't have to explain the order to the Marines.
      But in a situation like that, if you don't want a mutiny or to get fragged by your own people(which was common in the Vietnam war)explaining why is crucially important.
      This ''Shut up and do it because I said so and I'm the leader''-type of thing that Gorman expects to work, doesn't work in the movie. It turns out, that doesn't work in real life, either.

    7:56 the difference between corporate and military, includes but is not limited to:
    1) pre-filtering. You are talking about military people who have already been harsh sorted at least once.
    2) punative measures. Civilian staff are individuals you buy time and services from, and the State has legal party to their contract to that harshly sets out the rules your contract must also favour. Those rules are *not* in your interest. You inflict a punative measure on your staff they will just go to your competitor or sabotage the work. The worst thing you're allowed to do is dismiss them.
    3) short of dismissal you have no other influence over the staff members behaviour. You can't control what or when they eat or drink in their own time. You can't force fitness or retraining on them. You can only fire them if they wont agree.
    4) Big one, in civilian world you're working from your own money or tight budget. Budget is everything.
    5) People _can_ just hand in notice and get headhunted for better positions. This means the ones you are working with, are not pre-screened semi-capable troops waiting to be formed into something capable - they are the ones too lazy or incapable of going elsewhere, who lack motivation, and only show to pay their bills or pay for their habits. And they're not their to be trained or lead into anything - they're there to generally do the least possible in order not to get fired. ....and the budget tends to reflect that (but pay them more and they'll get more expensive hobbies and think "they've made it", not that they should do more)

      Awesome comment! Im an entrepreneur but guy drafted on my country for military service in the marine, tought me a couple of things about discipline and command. The screening processes, at least for a startup, should be mainly concerned on capacity and how likely is this person to obsess with the mission at hand. Dismissal therefore should be a grave pain to inflict.

    This is one big circle jerk. Of course there are aspects of leadership that are universal in all aspects of life, and some of those are found in military leadership, but if I ran my business the way the military operates, more precisely the way military leadership operates, I would have been bankrupt long ago. Sure various aspects of the training I received in the military has suited me well after leaving the service, but there is also a large amount of dysfunction among military leadership which would result in rapid failure if used to run a business where you have to keep generating income and making payroll every week.

    It's just great ideas sounds fun... ideas sounds fun .. ideas .. initiative.. in the shit. Be direct. You a combatant you go towards other combatants... we're.... Europeans were like this . And if instead we make it personal we make it private and we even just fight knife. In the end . Keep the kids out of it. No more mass production of arms ammo. Just keep it personal private and put up or shut up

    So when it's combat what do you need. Forget rank respect killing . Trust and believe . Because you need to pause and tell them . You ain't the same. At there level . Train above rank and kill . It's your purpose your a combatant you need other combatant otherwise it's just proxy

Europeans like you trained .. It's easy isn't it soft targets heavy bullets. You need smaller fights against equals. You could still watch. And see. People trained against rank .

    If you have men .. And in telling them what to do. Is you not doing the same. Then your in a game.. It's easy there not equals. Your adversity is not equal. You need a equal opposite reaction . People trained like you. Make it all disappear. A private who fights the best . . At the end of an equal fight he mite be more than a general. It's about the display of ability. Who fights with some one trying to direct them . ... You did ... You have an eye in the sky. You have norad

    So you have a private and he can kill better than the lt the lt keeps it himself out of the way. Because in fight you . If your a officer and can't fight . You stay out of the way. You write your book. Dates and times... but in the end . You respect combatants. And When you have they have an autonomy in this . Bad officers didn't train the same don't know it . Can't kill the same. When you give autonomy to people trained above rank there combatant training is better they fight better work better. And they don't need to be judged or corrected. They kill the way they do you don't try and tell them different. They are trained to fight combatant. The outcome is theres.

    Every bullet counts it's a dollar every round . Letting kids fire off teaches them a fear of being shot . In the end were Europe's we forget ourselves and combatants are paid they must fight. They are paid to train to equip. They must be used to fight other combatants . Otherwise you have wasted your money. 1000 men fighting without rank forgetting the communication just killing . Just working how there trained. If your a private and you would in every way out fight an officer. Then forget them trying to get you killed. You fight you survive.... Then you sex. The best. Move on quit your country and fight private

    Bad leaders - Guys sat on their arses talking about the same old same on shitty podcasts bringing nothing progressive to the table. Good leaders - people that go out, work hard and keep their shit to themselves, helping people along the way to be progressive for themselves and others. Simple.
