When your enemies realize threat of being annihilated is real they tend not to push too far in that direction. I quite enjoyed that you went from "harmless" to the "gentle art" - It's like not wanting to be 'dangerous' but slightly more than 'harmless' haha. I mean I know people look at jiujitsu as some kind of combat training but it literally translates to the gentle art - which amused me a little. 😁 As Tanner said, if you commit to it, you will build yourself into the best version of yourself.

They will run their mouths, and think they're tough because the one they mouth off to knows if they do something the asshole will sue them OR, they (the asshole) will call the cops and then better men than them will show up to enforce (with force if necessary) the norms and laws of the society. The guy who is truly tough doesn't let that asshole and his mouth get under his skin because he/she knows when push comes to shove they will prevail. The asshole on the other hand falsely believes they put someone in their place which they again falsely believe makes them tough. The mouthy asshole most of the time is blissfully unaware that only due to the consequences and some inner discipline the other guy exercised were they allowed to not be "damaged", to some greater or lesser extent. But if society ever breaks down, regardless of the cause, those assholes who love to run their mouths will either learn very quickly, become slaves or die.....probably on their knees, begging for their life.

@@imtoofly3137 I have two degrees, but I also served in the military so I was around people that could be rather "savage" when they needed to be. Being around people like requires developing a "polite respect" for each person you serve with. Some college educated people don't know how to use what smarts they have and they are counting on society to protect them. It's like a guy who thinks he's tough just because he has a knife or even a gun. If they don't know how to use them effectively they could learn a hard lesson from someone who does. Strength and even ability without the right amount of discipline is far less effective than those who possess all 3.

My dad, who was a cop, said the two proudest days of his life were the day I was born and day I graduated boot. Because he knew I wasn't going to a federal pen any more. Got into some trouble growing up but all I ever wanted was to be in the Navy and thank God for my recruiter!

The Navy Changed my life, i was well on my way to the prison life (was banging at the time and was about to do a stint in campo but the judge let me off when my recruiter spoke up for me and notified them of my intention of going to boot). Greatest choice i ever made, gave me direction and focus in life.

I was USAF, but still a very large warrior. I wrestled almost everyday with my daughter until she started developing at twelve years old. She could whip any boy her age at that time. My precious girl child is now a 41 year old lawyer. Kids need a dedicated father to adore and discipline them.

Best thing I ever did was to enlist in the Navy out of high school. Gave me the discipline that I needed to graduate from college and have a good career. Retired now and I still run or hit the gym everyday, do work around the house every day and study new subjects to improve my mind. It never ends. There is no finish line. Don't be satisfied.

How so? I am considering it, just don't know if such a physical and technical route is right for me. Im not science or engineering oriented, and have a 4.1, take AP classes, and I am not sure if the military would be the most suited path for me. I've been in the military, I was an LEO for some years, former sniper, an expert in firearms instruction and tactics. Now, I'm a full time cattle rancher, and it is a wonderful. So grateful for the training and experience I have, but I find more pleasure in having love, compassion and being kind towards people and if needed I will still be a protector using violence if needed. My six year old has always talked about being a Navy Seal. All he does is run around playing commando. The other day I called him my little cowboy, indignant he says I'm not a cowboy, I'm gonna be a cop and a seal. I told him I was a sniper and he was shocked, his new hero. He has the warrior mindset.

He may have been mildly concerned with Jocko describing himself in that way and felt the need to correct him like(I've met them and you’re seriously not like that I promise).
Theres two ways to interpret this. 1. He doesn't look like a serial killer because hes not creepy enough. 2. Serial killers just look like regular people, not exactly creepy, and so people cannot tell the danger. I prefer the second interpretation lol
I would be very interested in hearing these two highly-experienced, disciplined men discuss how children can cope with a mentally ill, abusive parent. Many of the bullies I've seen come from homes where they learn their skills by being viciously bullied by a parent (or parents) or an older, stronger sibling who is not restrained by adults.

This is one of my favorite conversations. One thing my mother told me when I was younger regarding picking a husband, "Love comes after respect". I thought of this when you were talking. We want power but also the ability to be good.
The Bible actually doesn’t even call a woman to love her husband. It calls her to respect and submit to him. Definitely ties in with what your saying. As I learned the hardway in my marriage, if she doesn’t respect you through her actions she doesn’t really love you no matter what she says. Respect 1st, love 2nd your mom was correct.

So, it's very much a two-way street.

When I was 6 years old I realized all I wanted to do when I grew up was be a soldier, Or as I called it then an army man.. When I was 19 years old and I enlisted in the United States army and volunteered fot infantry I told my parents, and they acted surprised.My parents accused me of essentially doing it without ever talking to them and they asked me "when did you decide to join the army?" and I told them when I was 6, remember? Having served in the United States Army infantry as an 11 Bravo, even after being a Firefighter for 20 years, is the thing I am most proud of.

There are lots of men exactly like Jocko, minus the integrity, in prison. Also many of them only had just a lapse of it, and are now behind bars the rest of their life.
Reminds me of a guy I went to high school with - Dan smith, Cinnaminson nj- look him up. Dan had the strength and fortitude to be Jocko-esque. As you can see if you googled his name, he choose to be a felon. Unfortunately, I believe too many people do not choose the jocko route.

I grew up the same way as Jocko, obsessed with Special Ops/ Swat Teams and how heroic and super hero-like they are. War movies, toys, and books my dad bought for me about spec ops. After high school I fell into drugs and alcohol and it wasn’t until I hit 30 I decided to enlist because I had turned my life around. Unfortunately due to childhood medical issues I couldn’t get into the military. It left me depressed for alittle while because I have this deep sense of a savior complex. I’m the protector of my family and friends, I constantly think tactically of scenarios in public of how to protect those around me, and I feel like a guard dog in a way. God has led me to the medical field and I’m just starting it now so I hope it fulfills this “warrior mentality” Jocko and alot of men like us have.

These were my springboards too. I struggle with impulsivity, but the relief is immense, even despite my physical limitations. Even when I can't overcome, I don't have to whine or despair, I have a dedicated set of steps I can follow to find out the cause and adapt myself in case it comes up again. I can't always prevail in the immediacy. But I will never let the conditions that triggered me the first time to trigger me twice. That is as close to solving my problem as I can get. And it's enough. Like Clara Sousa-Silva with her strategy for building her enormously complex database. Adaptation is often at odds with perfection. I cant perform perfectly. But I can adapt my own consciousness to each failure to ensure my mistakes are limited to a single occurrence.
For a long time i thought i was alone in this mentality. I was made fun of for wanting to be a commando like jocko said. I feared people would see me as violent or simply put me down bcuz i was quite frankly a shrimp of a kid. It wasnt until recently that i found out that the warrior mentality is something that is highly regarded. The idea of being the best of the best and putting my life on the line to save others is the exact reasons why i went down a path of law enforcement. Im getting a CJ degree and plan on becoming a police officer with the ultimate goal of joining the FBI’s hostage rescue team. Idk if i truly have what it takes but until im put to the test ill be training to be a better me than the day before

The old boy I served my apprenticeship with in the UK during the 1980s was an ex WW2 veteran who'd been badly wounded by a sniper in North Africa. We were talking about the football hooligan problem in the UK at the time, and he said such aggressive young men had always existed. But with no wars to fight, they were somewhat directionless, and fighting on the football stadium terraces was their outlet for that aggression. He said that 40 years before, they'd have been winning medals and getting killed, and lauded as heroes.
That's what I say about prison. It was the most respectful place I ever been. Ppl don't curse at each other ppl hold doors for the elderly ppl say please and thank you and your welcome there's a level of respect but it's a silent forced respect because everyone knows what can happen if your disrespectful and in away it makes you be humble and more respectful and even the most violent and tuff guys fall in line cause they know anyone can get it.
Any detractor of JP should just be pointed to this video to realize his/her failure in understanding where he comes from or his endeavour. Man, I am just so damn glad there are people in the world like you two. I get mentally beaten up by all the ads and bad examples that I can't seem to keep from showing up in my normal day to day. Knowing there are people out there that exemplify the things I know to be true (the truth rings like a bell) gives me hope for my kids.
I was 28 years old and a married father of two when I finally felt like a man. It was the first time that I as a cop ran into a potentially lethal situation for the first time and didn’t hesitate to go help my buddies. Before that point I was unsure, even as I was leading a family.

This is so true. I used to struggle with my decision to leave the Corps. I had one goal. Recon. No Raiders back then. I was in waiting for BRC. Then had to be pulled. Had a mother who was mentally ill. Tough choice to be honest. I always have felt I did not belong. Catch wrestling and BJJ (black belt under Carlos Catania) gave me an outlet. I enjoyed my time in infantry. I now am a mechanical engineer and also have a PhD. There is life outside of being a commando. But nothing fit me as well as being a war fighter. Thank you gentlemen.
I can relate so much to the three points of his wedding speech. I had a similar background - tough guy, college football player. When I became the rather of a disabled child I could feel that incredible power within me. Not until then... Until then I didn't even know what it was to be a man. Really, really fascinating.

An IQ above 150, depending on the test/result type, (WISC, Stanford-Binet...etc, 15SD/16SD) has a rarity of roughly 1/1100. Great conversation. I liked Jocko's three things on becoming a man. I would expand on the 3rd one...getting married and having kids. As we have seen many times, anyone can get married and father children. The sign of a real man is not only being a father, but being a daddy to your kids, with all that entails; and not just getting married, but being a good husband, and being a good husband and daddy for the long haul. That takes a lot of self sacrifice and determination. We only have a limited number of hours in the day. We can spend it by pouring our lives into a career at the expense of our families, or we can balance work and family.

You see this with smart-ass college kids probably the most but some of them will carry it later into life if they haven't been taught a lesson. They will run their mouths, and think they're tough because the one they mouth off to knows if they do something the asshole will sue them OR, they (the asshole) will call the cops and then better men than them will show up to enforce (with force if necessary) the norms and laws of the society. The guy who is truly tough doesn't let that asshole and his mouth get under his skin because he/she knows when push comes to shove they will prevail. The mouthy asshole most of the time is blissfully unaware that only due to the consequences and some inner discipline the other guy exercised were they allowed to not be "damaged", to some greater or lesser extent. But if society ever breaks down, regardless of the cause, those assholes who love to run their mouths will either learn very quickly, become slaves or die.....probably on their knees, begging for their life.

Being around people like requires developing a "polite respect" for each person you serve with. Some college educated people don't know how to use what smarts they have and they are counting on society to protect them. It's like a guy who thinks he's tough just because he has a knife or even a gun. If they don't know how to use them effectively they could learn a hard lesson from someone who does. Strength and even ability without the right amount of discipline is far less effective than those who possess all 3.

Best thing I ever did was to enlist in the Navy out of high school. Gave me the discipline that I needed to graduate from college and have a good career. Retired now and I still run or hit the gym everyday, do work around the house every day and study new subjects to improve my mind. It never ends. There is no finish line. Don't be satisfied.

I've been in the military, I was an LEO for some years, former sniper, an expert in firearms instruction and tactics. Now, I'm a full time cattle rancher, and it is a wonderful. So grateful for the training and experience I have, but I find more pleasure in having love, compassion and being kind towards people and if needed I will still be a protector using violence if needed. My six year old has always talked about being a Navy Seal. All he does is run around playing commando. The other day I called him my little cowboy, indignant he says I'm not a cowboy, I'm gonna be a cop and a seal. I told him I was a sniper and he was shocked, his new hero. He has the warrior mindset.

As a psychological researcher, psychologist, and psychology professor Jordan Peterson spent a few years working at a maximum security prison where he spent many hours interviewing legit serial killers. He may have been mildly concerned with Jocko describing himself in that way and felt the need to correct him like(I've met them and you’re seriously not like that I promise).
Theres two ways to interpret this.
1. He doesn't look like a serial killer because hes not creepy enough.
2. Serial killers just look like regular people, not exactly creepy, and so people cannot tell the danger.

When I was 6 years old I realized all I wanted to do when I grew up was be a soldier, Or as I called it then an army man.. When I was 19 years old and I enlisted in the United States army and volunteered fot infantry I told my parents, and they acted surprised.My parents accused me of essentially doing it without ever talking to them and they asked me "when did you decide to join the army?" and I told them when I was 6, remember?
Having served in the United States Army infantry as an 11 Bravo, even after being a Firefighter for 20 years, is the thing I am most proud of.

Watching these two great men talk about life is a real privilege for me.
I grew up the same way as Jocko, obsessed with Special Ops/ Swat Teams and how heroic and super hero-like they are. War movies, toys, and books my dad bought for me about spec ops. After high school I fell into drugs and alcohol and it wasn’t until I hit 30 I decided to enlist because I had turned my life around. Unfortunately due to childhood medical issues I couldn’t get into the military. It left me depressed for alittle while because I have this deep sense of a savior complex. I’m the protector of my family and friends, I constantly think tactically of scenarios in public of how to protect those around me, and I feel like a guard dog in a way. God has led me to the medical field and I’m just starting it now so I hope it fulfills this “warrior mentality” Jocko and alot of men like us have.

These were my springboards too. I struggle with impulsivity, but the relief is immense, even despite my physical limitations. Even when I can't overcome, I don't have to whine or despair, I have a dedicated set of steps I can follow to find out the cause and adapt myself in case it comes up again. I can't always prevail in the immediacy. But I will never let the conditions that triggered me the first time to trigger me twice. That is as close to solving my problem as I can get. And it's enough. Like Clara Sousa-Silva with her strategy for building her enormously complex database. Adaptation is often at odds with perfection. I cant perform perfectly. But I can adapt my own consciousness to each failure to ensure my mistakes are limited to a single occurrence.
For a long time i thought i was alone in this mentality. I was made fun of for wanting to be a commando like jocko said. I feared people would see me as violent or simply put me down bcuz i was quite frankly a shrimp of a kid. It wasnt until recently that i found out that the warrior mentality is something that is highly regarded. The idea of being the best of the best and putting my life on the line to save others is the exact reasons why i went down a path of law enforcement. Im getting a CJ degree and plan on becoming a police officer with the ultimate goal of joining the FBI’s hostage rescue team. Idk if i truly have what it takes but until im put to the test ill be training to be a better me than the day before

The old boy I served my apprenticeship with in the UK during the 1980s was an ex WW2 veteran who'd been badly wounded by a sniper in North Africa. We were talking about the football hooligan problem in the UK at the time, and he said such aggressive young men had always existed. But with no wars to fight, they were somewhat directionless, and fighting on the football stadium terraces was their outlet for that aggression. He said that 40 years before, they'd have been winning medals and getting killed, and lauded as heroes.
That young age passion comes from the Lord. I felt the same way about my profession. When I was 18 I went in to business and never looked back.

That's what I say about prison. It was the most respectful place I ever been. Ppl don't curse at each other ppl hold doors for the elderly ppl say please and thank you and your welcome there's a level of respect but it's a silent forced respect because everyone knows what can happen if your disrespectful and in away it makes you be humble and more respectful and even the most violent and tuff guys fall in line cause they know anyone can get it.
Any detractor of JP should just be pointed to this video to realize his/her failure in understanding where he comes from or his endeavour. I would say it’s almost impossible for an academic to be on the same page as a warrior. I mean truly sharing meaning and perception of things. One of the best interactions I’ve seen. Man, I am just so damn glad there are people in the world like you two. I get mentally beaten up by all the ads and bad examples that I can't seem to keep from showing up in my normal day to day. Knowing there are people out there that exemplify the things I know to be true (the truth rings like a bell) gives me hope for my kids.
I was 28 years old and a married father of two when I finally felt like a man. It was the first time that I as a cop ran into a potentially lethal situation for the first time and didn’t hesitate to go help my buddies. Before that point I was unsure, even as I was leading a family.

This is so true. I used to struggle with my decision to leave the Corps. I had one goal. Recon. No Raiders back then. I was in waiting for BRC. Then had to be pulled. Had a mother who was mentally ill. Tough choice to be honest. I always have felt I did not belong. Catch wrestling and BJJ (black belt under Carlos Catania) gave me an outlet. I enjoyed my time in infantry. I now am a mechanical engineer and also have a PhD. There is life outside of being a commando. But nothing fit me as well as being a war fighter. Thank you gentlemen.

I can relate so much to the three points of his wedding speech. I had a similar background - tough guy, college football player. When I became the rather of a disabled child I could feel that incredible power within me. Not until then... Until then I didn't even know what it was to be a man. Really, really fascinating.

An IQ above 150, depending on the test/result type, (WISC, Stanford-Binet...etc, 15SD/16SD) has a rarity of roughly 1/1100. This makes more than 350000 people in Canada and America with an IQ of 150+. I think I've made my point...
Haven't had a dad/Father figure since I was 14. Just looking for guidance. This world is selfish and no one wants to help others unless it benefits themselves. So, thank you Jocko and Peterson for all that you do
Great conversation. I liked Jocko's three things on becoming a man. I would expand on the 3rd one...getting married and having kids. As we have seen many times, anyone can get married and father children. The sign of a real man is not only being a father, but being a daddy to your kids, with all that entails; and not just getting married, but being a good husband, and being a good husband and daddy for the long haul. That takes a lot of self sacrifice and determination. We only have a limited number of hours in the day. We can spend it by pouring our lives into a career at the expense of our families, or we can balance work and family.
