Hey guys, you can now find most of my TH-cam stuff on Spotify! Here is a link to my Random Jams playlist : tinyurl.com/random-jams-spotify My music is also available on iTunes, Apple Music, Tidal, TikTok and pretty much everywhere else. Love y’all
Thanks for sharing. Your improv feels like it is growing and maturing. It has always been good, but this one feels like it is getting even better in some intangible way, like you are relaxing more into your own music and know that your experiments will enrich what you are doing.
Thank you! That would be amazing indeed, I would love to do long uninterrupted sessions where I would resample and morph between tracks but damn, I'm exhausted just thinking about it, aha.
Awesome set, awesome sound! Very smart using of Ditto x4. // edit: Sorry Aldo, I saw you already responded to my question in previous replies! very interesting, thank you :-)
Out of all the music channels I follow, you and Cuckoo are like the Bob Ross dudes of synths (I mean that in a good way!). Your stuff is so smooth sounding and it just flows ever so nicely. You don't just take the easy route either with basic sounds that can easily fit into a mix. You always seem to come up with really unique, quirky oddball sounds, but you somehow have a way of making them still sound so smooth and balanced in the mix. I never know what kind of unique sounds I am going to hear with your videos (which I appreciate), but I can always bet on them sounding so smooth and chill. Love it!!
Oh thank you so much man, I really appreciate the kind words! Especially as I'm a bug Cuckoo fan myself, most of what I know about synth and stuff come from his videos. :)
That solo transforms completely the song. Love your work man. What model is your guitar? I'm about to purchase something similar. It's sounds smooth...of course the pedals might help too. Keep up the good work 🤙
Can you do a setup video at some point? Your jams are very inspiring and i would love to do something like that too, with multiple instruments like guitar and synth in a loop. But i have no idea how to approach all this.
Hey, maybe someday but I don't have the time right now. Also my setup is really-really not ideal and Ableton is probably way more suited for most people. But if you're really interested in this specific setup I'm super open about my process, you'll find patch notes diagrams in the video descriptions. You can also shout me any questions, here or on my Instagram/email, I try to answer every one of them. :)
Dude could you recomend a very basic easy set up and gear for doing something like that but with no so many devices. I only have a fender jazzmaster, fender amp , a jazz bass and a akai mpk mini 2 and MPC BEATS DAW. That is it. The deal is the mpk mini is a empty usb keyboard so.... any advice?
Where was the guitar solo? I felt like I was being teased the whole time. Amazing electronic jam but a smooth guitar solo with a classic tone was a giant missed opportunity to bring this to the next level.
Hey no worries, it's actually super cumbersome and unreliable but basically most parameters on the Ditto can be controlled with MIDI CC messages, which you can send from the Digitakt (and some other sequencers). If you send a CC command at the beginning of your sequence to start the loop and another at the end to stop the recording, you'll end up with a loop that is exactly the length of your Digitakt sequence. The main issue is that MIDI is not 100% steady so tiny time discrepancies will add up over time and the loop will get out of sync. I would recommend using a system with a more robust sync (RC-505, Aeros Loop Studio, Ableton, etc.). Hope that helps!
Hey, thank you so much! Are you talking about the playing or about the sound design maybe? Either way I'm kinda learning as I go. I also watch quite a lot of music-gear-oriented channel. True Cuckoo and Ricky Tinez are both amazing channels, great musical vibes and super educative!
I hate to be the person to ask this, but I have a Keystep and I dabble around in Garageband, but would love to get either the 0-coast/ volcaFM/ Digitakt. Out of those 3, what would be a high priority?
Hey, no worries man! If money is not an issue and you feel up to the task, definitely the Digitakt because it will unlock a lot of stuff. I think it's a great machine to start playing around with samples and MIDI sequencing. The overlay is super clear but the machine is still deep. The Volca FM is awesome as well, obviously more limited but the sound quality is amazing for the price, and you get a super nice sequencer as well as an arpeggiator! I wouldn't recommend the 0-Coast as a first machine though. I love mine a lot but it's a cryptic and unusual device. While it can produces some crazy monosynth sounds, it's just not as versatile as the Volca. Hope that helps! :)
@@Aldoistaken Amazing, I appreciate the thorough reply. Was not aware of the price of the Digitakt in Canada! Yikes. I feel the Volca will do just fine for the time being. Thanks again!
Hey man! I really like your stuff! One question, how you make your guitar sound like that at 2:25? Do you know which guitar pedal can give you that same sound? Thanks :)
Hey, thank you! The effect is made with a super cheap FX rack, the DOD G7. This patch is a combination of a light distortion and an octaver so you could probably get pretty close with 2 similar pedals. :)
I have a distortion and an octaver pedal as well but for sure the FX rack makes a huge difference because I’m not even close to achieve that specific sound. It sounds amazing while you do the bendings.
I would love to make stuff like this. Can you go more in depth about the Digitakt? I’m looking into possibly buying one at some point over the next few months. How exactly do you turn it into a polyphonic synth? I thought it was just a drum machine. How do you generally make it the “brain” of the setup?
The polyphonic stuff is definitely a trick, I use a computer running Max MSP, it processes the MIDI notes and spread them across multiple MIDI channels. Basically each new note you play is send to the next track (so you can get up to 8 voices as you have 8 tracks). This is also doable with a special cable, the RK-002 from Retrokit, I believe it's 50$. The Digitakt is not really designed for this but it works really well for me. :) It's a great machine anyway! It makes for a great control center for your setup because it has a powerful and flexible MIDI sequencer. You got 8 MIDI tracks so you could control 8 devices at the same time.
Aldo You should consider making a video on your process for it! I’m sure a lot of people would love to learn how you do it! How does the Elektron control the looper pedal and how many loops can it have at once? How do you like the drum machine? Would you rather use a different one? What’s the advantage of the drumbrute vs the elektron since it technically is one?
I'm considering doing tutorials but I have very little time on my hand right now so I try to stay focus on the music itself, maybe someday! I like the DrumBrute a lot, it's way more limited than the Digitakt sound-wise but it has a lot of performance-oriented features : the looper strip, the Solo/Mute mode, the filter, proper pads... There is also less menu-diving so it's a very instant machine. Butttt the Digitakt can play any sound you can think of so it's way more versatile, the sequencer is more flexible as well. So yeah they both amazing but they have different strength. :) In this price range I can't think of any other drum machine I would prefer over these two. And here is my pre-made answer for the Digitakt/looper combo (excuse the laziness) : The Ditto X4 looper is controlled by the Digitakt. The Digitakt MIDI sequencer sends CC messages (a type of MIDI data) and those messages start and stop the recording of each loop. I pre-program everything beforehand and I simply have to mute and unmute MIDI tracks during the jam. You can also use MIDI messages to trigger FX, switch between loops, control the volume, etc. Here is the MIDI implementation chart for the Ditto > downloads.musictri.be/tc-data/documents/releasenotes/DITTO-X4-LOOPER_Software_ReleaseNotes.html To my knowledge, the Ditto X4 and the Pigtronix Infinity are the only looper pedal with this kind of MIDI mapping. Anyway, hope that helps, and feel free to shoot any other questions!
Not enough! I had a whole day to finalize and rehearse the track, and the next morning I started shooting. I actually struggled quite a lot on this one, it took me 12 takes. :o But anyway I'm super glad you liked it!
I found you through a Sean Angus Watson related video. Love your stuff. You ever listen to Bobbing? The more I hear of your music (especially this) reminds me of his album, Thank You For Singing To Me.
Oh that's great I'm a huge fan of Sean Angus Watson! And I never heard of Bobbing before but what I'm listening right now sounds pretty damn cool, thanks for the heads up!
I was actually way more active before! I released one video per week during the first 6 months but kinda burned out, aha, now I try to release one video every 2/3 weeks. :) Inspiration usually comes when I discover a new artist, or even just a new song.
Awesome jam, I like that you use a lot of hardware toys, and know what to do with them. What is the thing on top right side that you use for the bass line?
Hey, thank you! It's the Ditto X4 looper pedal, it loops the guitar and the synth arpeggios, when I touch the knob it's to adjust the volume of the loop. :)
Hey Aldo, how do you start and stop the x4-loops? For example the first guitar chord progression? You dont press any of the stomp switches so I assume, that the drumbrute is handling the start and stop behaviour? I'm inspired by you to start with guitar/synth looping. Very nice work!
Hey, I get this question quite a lot so here is a copy/paste (please excuse the laziness) : The Ditto X4 looper is controlled by the Digitakt. Not sure I will find that time, but who knows! To answer your question, no the Digitakt cannot perform audio-looping so yeah it's only the Ditto X4. :) The Keystep does have a very cool sequencer but I only use the Digitakt for sequencing in most of my videos. It's just easier because I'm able to mute and unmute everything from one single place. Hope that helps, and thank you for the kind word!
@@Aldoistaken Thank you for great music and this small nugget of information :) Last thing that I can't make out is how you stop recording loops? I can't see you pressing something and yet you are recording fluently loop after loop. Is ditto somehow synced do digitakt? Hey, thank you! I use a looper pedal, it's the Ditto X4 from TC Electronic. Not perfect but I can control it with the Digitakt to get perfectly synced loops.
Hey, that's a good and tricky question! I don't really know. I kinda learned all the classic 7th and M7 chords and once in a while I'll try to invert them or add some random notes to see what sticks. I'm super bad at music theory so it's mostly trial and error. I also find some new chords and colors when I screw up, aha, then I put them in a safe place in my brain for later use. You can also learn some "real" jazz songs which are often full of crazy/unusual chords and voicing, sooner or later those will pop out in your own composition. :)
Not DAWless at all. :) I record some elements separately onto 4 tracks and mix them all together in the DAW. I also add reverb/delay and master the whole thing with some fancy plug-ins. Basically all the instruments are played live but I polish the sound afterward.

Aldo thanks! That explains everything :) Still would like to watch how you are seting up whole thing :) Lovely stuff! Take care man :)
fucking sick build up
what amp do you use?
I don't use any amp, my guitar usually goes straight into my audio interface. :)
tell about your equipment
Hey, I give quite a lot of details in the video description, you might wanna check it out.
Hi, nice stuff ! I wanted to ask you. How do you record your loop ? Do you use your computer with a software (if yes which one ?)
or do you use a Looper ? Thank you :)
Anyway great stuff, Cheers
Hey, thank you! I use a looper pedal, it's the Ditto X4 from TC Electronic. Not perfect but I can control it with the Digitakt to get perfectly synced loops.
😭 good
What camera do you use?
Hey, I use a Canon 550D.
Aldo looks amazing!
Thank you! I'm pretty happy with the result. :)
👍👍👍👍
Buy a seaboard, small interface but pin the tune at the touch.
Not sure what you mean?
Amazing song, how do you find those nice chord progressions ? I always seems to struggle finding something slightly unusual or jazzy like you :)
im jamming with my juno and circuit with you
That sounds funnn
Just for asking, when you record your Jam Session is it DAWless( Without digital audio workstations)?
Anyway, nice track : )
Not DAWless at all. :) I record some elements separately onto 4 tracks and mix them all together in the DAW. I also add reverb/delay and master the whole thing with some fancy plug-ins. Basically all the instruments are played live but I polish the sound afterward.
mesmo à patrão oube lá
