    • @flyingyakdeath
      @flyingyakdeath 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly why your insurance rate is high. Body shops that work with ins companies know the total loss point so they put the estimate right up to the edge. Not only that but they'll work on it first with easy labor and parts they can charge a lot for and then "discover" a problem that they report to ins which totals the car. This gets them top dollar for the easy stuff which then get the ins company to move the car out of their shop and be done with it.

    Ryan, sorry that you have had two rear end accidents in quick succession. It seems that Teslas are way too expensive to repair. I have been hit from the rear only twice in 40+ years of driving, most of that in So Cal in a city famous for it’s bad drivers. One accident was serious, (it hurt me way more than the car). Back then, external chrome bumpers were designed to be hit, but all that energy went into me. I do not drive a Tesla (yet). I wonder if Teslas attract this kind of accident? Possible reasons: 1. Teslas stop quicker or differently because of regenerative breaking. 2. Someone is trying to get a closer look at the Tesla’s rear end (way too close). 3. Tesla brake lights aren’t noticeable enough? Need to add some big flashing LEDs across the back of the spoiler or lift gate? 4. Teslas magnetically attract inattentive drivers approaching from the rear. 5. The fossil fuel vehicles are making their last stand against EVs because they know they are doomed. 😆

  • @ChainringTours
    @ChainringTours 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Given the time period of the crash being pre-Christmas period, that would likely explain the two weeks before it was fully assessed. Then once the estimator puts together their report (shop dependent) they need approval from the insurance. Then Jan. 5th to Feb. 12th to do a large repair AND PPF seems reasonable. They paint needs a few days to fully cure before PPF, so each step is hard to do together. I think in a non holiday period without PPF you might get in 4 weeks for repairs, so add in the extra steps and holiday, 8 weeks seems long, but not unreasonable. I had a front bumper repair from a bird strike and even that was 2 weeks between estimate and parts, etc. That was WAY easier a repair than your hit.

    I am putting this here, and on other Tesla sites, because I am hoping this get looked at by one of the Tesla channels. Here in So Cal, within 200 miles there are no new Model 3's or Model Y's. Looking at the Ford site, there are 100+ Mach-E cars sitting on dealer lots, 2021 and 2022 models. This with Tesla much greater production vs Ford, and by the way last time I checked to get a Model Y, in red, white interior, tow hitch, 7 seat is currently August of 2022.

    That is a pretty quick repair. My BMW X3 had a similar rear-end accident and took 3-4 months to repair in early 2019 when parts were plentiful. Fortunately, we had a spare car to drive. And of course, the car was worth less so we pursued a Diminished Value claim from the other parties' insurance after receiving the car back.

      @@stuartburns8657 you're fighting against physics there. The reason old steel bumpers are so great at protecting cars is the same reason they are less safe for drivers. Sturdy objects transfer kinetic energy to occupants, but cheap splody/spongy things tend to just break and absorb the impact in the process of breaking. Cheaper to manufacture and safer so the industry isn't going back towards sturdy and reliable any time soon.

    Tesla not having a dealer is both good & bad. If I buy for example a BMW from a dealer who is right on top of things it will be fast & efficient, conversely if you buy from one that is run poorly, it will take forever and likely they will charge more. I have heard nothing but bad things about Teslas after sales service and until they get it up to a level commensurate with the cost of the cars I will not buy one. A bump like that should take 2 weeks, 3 max. Thx RS, great post. Sorry to hear of the hassles.

    Did you choose where to get the car fixed or was it Tesla insurance that provided the options. Definitely having Tesla involved in provided parts ordering status provides some reassurance that the repair will be done correctly with the proper parts. Did you have any damage to your personal items in the car, percussion kit etc? Lastly, any update on the luxury spring kit you installed early on. Did the accident affect the ride? Was the $2k+ cost still worth it, would you do it again? Would love an update on that in the future. Thanks.

    Tesla needs to be upfront prior to configuration in the upcoming Y’s which battery you are getting if they are doing a mix of batteries. It would be unacceptable if an ICE vehicle stated same horsepower through a V6 but gave you a 4 cylinder, Tesla should be held to the same standard

      the battery has nothing to do with performance on these cars. The motors remain the same. Other manufacturers don't use only one battery from one supplier either, but have several of them. Tesla only uses different batteries on different trims though, but of course they are eventually switching to a newer revision of the battery if its available. In the US Teslas only ship (on the M3 at least) with Panasonic batteries iirc, while in Europe the 2021 MY shipped with LG 5C (75kW) batteries for example, with the 2022 MY switching to the LG M50 5L (79kW) revision with higher density on the LR and P. Only the SR gets a different battery from CATL, which is the 6L LFP (62kW). Same with the M3.

    Did you ask the insurance company for diminished value compensation? They owe you extra because your car's resale value is less now. The carfax will reflect the accident and it will be worth less now. They probably owe 2 to 5k.

    Interesting… my Tesla-supplied Solar Edge Inverter for my new Solar/Powerwall system went on the fritz on Dec. 16th - 1 day after your car accident - and after only 5.5 months of operation! So, now I’m back on grid energy. You’re done with your car accident problem as of a couple days ago. Congrats! Me? Not so much. Still waiting for a replacement Inverter. Still no word from Tesla Energy as to when I’ll get it. Still paying $150/mo for grid energy again which my new $43K Solar/Powerwall system was supposed to shield me from. Still feeling like a sucker for investing in a Tesla Solar/Powerwall system. Maybe March will bring good news….?

      @@traviswieser I disagree. All insurance will go up. As all companies insure Teslas, all companies will incur cost. When their costs go up, they print money with your ink. My comment is only for this scenario. in the future, will need to factor in overall incidence of accidents with automated driving and collision avoidance, but as I have FSDbeta and have been underwhelmed, color me skeptical for he near future and hopeful for the intermediate/long future. In fact, I would submit that with fantom breaking, this is MORE likely to happen.

      Personal anecdote, I owned an i3 for 3 years and at first insurance companies charged about $1,100/year but after learning how expensive ev repairs are (and in this case the impossible to repair carbon fiber shell) that increased to over $2k… I suspect something similar will happen for the model y.

      @@undefined69695 good to know! I always shop around for insurance at all major companies for every newly purchased vehicle (used or new). And if my current policy increases, I shop around as well. Auto insurance loyalty is rarely cost-effective. Full coverage 6-month premium for my 2018 Mazda CX-3 was only $270 total (Progressive). Would've been $600 if I stayed with my existing insurance company (Allstate). I expect prices will range quite a bit with the Tesla as well.

    My son crashed our 3 year old Acura RDX. It barely looked damaged. No airbags deployed which on my other sons crash totaled the car as airbags must cost a lot. Back to the RDX. Insurance totaled the car. I could not believe it. The car cost $30,000 and they gave us a check for $12,000. Cars depreciate but labor and parts keep going up. So many 8, 9, 10, year old vehicles that are worth $5000 but thousands for engine or car maintenance repairs. Cars are almost disposable especially if you do not have the cash or insurance. I can see less ownership of vehicles in the future. Depreciation, insurance, maintenance. Many people spend most their monthly paychecks on car loan/repairs/maintain/insurance.

      Likely the body structure did what they were supposed to and bent to reduce the force transmitted into the cabin and occupants. Cars have predefined weak points where they fold on impact. Better for people. Worse for the car.
