    The other evening I was at my Alma Mater’s men’s college basketball game. It was a very crisp night. I had parked about about 3/4ths of a mile away. (enjoy getting my steps in for the day). After the game ended, while still in the sports arena, I pulled out my smart phone to preheat my car. Also turned on the heated seat & heated steering wheel. When I got into my Model 3 it was nice & warm.

    Another thing about emissions is the benefit of the “long tail pipe”. During the start of Covid in 2020 there were satellite images of the effect of people staying home versus those times when people were commuting to work showing levels of pollution in large cities. The effect was breathtaking to see the number of ICE vehicle‘s not driving. If we all drove EV‘s then we would permanently have a much cleaner environment in cities. And for those places where there are coal fired power plants (the end of the long tail pipe) to provide electricity, they are usually in rural areas and can disperse that pollution much more widely then we can in a confined city environment.

    One of the biggest advantages for me is the one pedal driving. Rarely use the brakes thereby saving wear and tear on the pads.

    • @stevenblackthorne4790
      @stevenblackthorne4790 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Absolutely. The fun and the ease of one-pedal driving is hard to exaggerate. The economy is also a significant advantage. I just bought snow tires for one of my BEVs yesterday, and as the customer service person was summing up my visit, she mentioned that the brake pads were the exact same thickness as last fall.
      She paused as what she had just said sunk in, then looked puzzled, and uncomfortable, as if she thought that the service crew had made a mistake in measuring the brake pads. I jumped in, and told her that this was not surprising, since I hardly ever touch my brakes, using regenerative braking, instead. She was astonished. "Oh! Wow! I didn't know that!" Few people outside of the BEV community do.

    • @Alpha_David
      @Alpha_David 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      While this statement is true, the benefit is non existent as tires on EVs typically wear out 30-50% faster (I.e. from less miles) due to regenerative braking than ICE vehicles.
      So you don’t save any money in the short or long run.

      @@Alpha_David My understanding is that BEVs have increased tire wear due to the sheer weight of the vehicle, not regenerative braking. It's hard to imagine why regenerative braking would be harder on tires than friction braking. Hard braking or hard acceleration increase tire wear, of course, but in general, I would say that my regenerative braking is a little more gentle than friction braking, depending on the driver. Good list. But I would definitely add regenerative braking in the top group of advantages. You can drive for long periods without hitting your brakes. It's less tiring to use one pedal plus the car goes into hold at lights so there's no need to keep your foot on the brake there either. I know some drivers are initially intimidated by regen braking but it's not hard to get used to.

    Ryan - I did a bit of research on this and it turns out the state with the highest production of electricity by coal is Wyoming at 40% according to the EIA. Most of the country has switched over to natural gas, which has 50% less CO2 emissions than coal. Most states of a significant % of nuclear (10-30%) which is pretty clean but just not renewable. Most folks don't realize this because this switch is pretty recent - in 2006 coal by far the largest percentage of fuel for grid power, 5 years ago coal and natural gas were about even, now natural gas is in the lead. Probably the most compelling argument from anti-EV folks is the environmental impact of lithium mining and mining of rare earth materials - and the social issues around that too (child labor in the DRC). Tesla is making advances but there is still a long way to make EVs truly green. Of course, they are way greener than ICE vehicles.

    • @andreyga22
      @andreyga22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Costa Rica where I live, we have like 99% renewable energy. So I think getting an electric vehicle is kinda obvious here. And that’s from the energy coming from grid.

    • @kingbran923
      @kingbran923 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonTaylor-po5xc No we won't, Solar wind and Hydro will never be enough to power the country alone. Look at what happened in Texas during the winter storm, their wind and solar production was pretty much halted due to the snow covering the solar panels and the temperatures freezing the turbines for wind. Right when that happened, people went inside to crank the heaters all at the same time causing a massive surge in power that the grid couldn't support because wind and solar failed them. You have to have other technologies like Nuclear be the primary source while wind solar and hydro can supplement. Otherwise, we'll rely on natural gas and other alternative fuels until we run out of them.

    • @JasonTaylor-po5xc
      @JasonTaylor-po5xc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kingbran923 I think that is an oversimplification. There were many, many factors that played into the grid failure in Texas. Keep in mind that wind and solar are still a pretty small part of the grid. The Houston area just isn't well prepared for winter weather. So typical stuff like downed powerlines were more difficult to repair because of road conditions. Put that winter storm in Pensacola FL and you would end up with a similar result. For myself, I'm all for more green technologies - and for nuclear (fission and fusion), and even for cleaner fossil technologies.

    For those of us in cold climates, EVs have almost instant heater operation. Also, for those who drive ICE cars with small engines on hot days, the electric motor driven AC compressor (in an EV) doesn’t load the powertrain down to keep the car cool.

You don't even need to use your phone unless you want to make a call. The head lights are amazingly bright. The sound system is amazing. The one peddle driving once you get used to it is amazing. The cruise control that matches speed limit of area is very cool. the kids love all the funny features of the horn or emissons control. I tried youtube on it and it was very cool. I also really like how you can control everything from the app and it tells you cabin temperature so you know if you want ot warm it up or cool it off before you get in. The trunk opens and closes itself with push of a button. My car came without the usb ports but I put in a service request through the tesla app and someone is coming out 3 days after delivery to my house to put them in. I also had an issue with the seat stiching and will also be fixed. So far amazing car, it is better then I expected, it is a complete spoil me gift to myself. I bought it even though I never ridden in one or tried it out and im very happy with the purchase and will be buying nothing but tesla going forward.

    Quietness is one of the biggest draws for me. However, curiously, on our O’Toyta Prius Prime, from inside the cabin, it’s not all that much quieter in EV mode than in hybrid mode, because:
    - The engine is off much of the time even when *not* in EV mode,
    - The engine is pretty darned quiet even when it is on, but most importantly, because:
    - Everything else is so quiet that the sound we do hear is dominated by tire noise.

    I think a mistake many people make is to think that they will be "filling up" an electric vehicle in the same manner they fill up an ICE vehicle.
    ICE Vehicle usage whether on a road trip or not:
    Wait until the vehicle has about 1/4 of a full tank. Drive up to gas station, insert the hose, wait until the tank is full.
    Electric Vehicle not on a road trip (most of the time):
    Plug in at home. Never have to wait for the vehicle to "fill up".
    Electric Vehicle on a road trip:
    Drive to a supercharger on the way to your eventual destination. Plug in and multitask (use the restroom, get some food, etc.) while probably not actually spending any time waiting for the vehicle to charge. Rinse repeat until you get to your destination.
    I've very rarely had to wait even a few minutes for my car to charge. I've always spent far less on electricity than the equivalent on gas. Lastly, I've always arrived at my destination very close to the same amount of time it takes to get there with an ICE vehicle.
    Note: If one charges foolishly (e.g. waiting at the supercharger until the car is > 80%), there are plenty of youtube videos explaining how to minimize your charging time by optimizing the charging speed, then one's charging time will greatly increase. You do have to know how to use the vehicle correctly. Either way, EV owners will pay far less than the equivalent in gas.

    Sign up with a firm like Arcadia, and your Tesla can be charged from solar or wind power in your state. If I understand correctly, Arcadia guarantees that a solar or wind farm in your state can sell the power you need to the grid (e.g., forcing a natural gas power plant to idle instead of a solar farm). Arcadia costs a few dollars more per month until you get assigned to a community solar project, at which point you may start saving money.

    It was mentioned that EVs are “greener” than gasoline cars even if the grid is “dirty”, but not further explained. One reason is that EVs are often 5 or even 6 times more efficient than typical gas cars. (My Maxima had a MPG in the low twenties, while my Model Y is in the mid 120’s MPG equivalent!)
    And then, in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, even though gasoline is considerably cleaner than coal, a car engine is only 30 to 35% energy efficient, whereas a coal fired plant is around 45% energy efficient, resulting in the gasoline engine being about as bad as burning coal.

    Two items that I would add are regenerative braking (already mentioned in a couple of comments) and the 'hold' mode when the vehicle is stopped. If you are at a long red light or otherwise stopped for a long time, simply take foot off the accelerator pedal and the car will not move, and you don't have to keep your foot on the brake, even on a steep incline or decline roadway. Both of these features are unique to EVs and are GREAT features!

    One big disadvantage to owning a Tesla is absolutely awful service. The worst imaginable. I've taken both my brand new S and Y in multiple times and nothing has been fixed. A mobile tech came to fix the charging door cover and did something to kill the entire car last Thursday. Tesla told me to call Tesla tow. Tow came and spent 2hrs and gave up saying it can't be towed from a normal parking garage spot. They keep closing the app chat with the service centers so nobody responds and I have to keep repeating the story to each new person. The service tech has no idea what to do because he keeps telling my assigned service station but they're not doing anything. They keep telling me to go in to service in person because theres no way to get someone on the phone but I also work full time and weekends so I don't have time to babysit Tesla service that doesn't seem to care at all.
    Nobody at Tesla cares one bit about any customer. It's your responsibility to fix the car even when they break it. I've had teslas for four years now and it's been the same the whole time.

    Recently, catalytic converter thefts have become a fairly significant problem in my area (Honolulu, HI), and I’ve also been hearing that the thefts are problematic in California. Obviously, having an EV (I have a Nissan Leaf but am hoping to upgrade to a Tesla in the next couple years) means not having to worry about such thefts.

    Another nice thing about Teslas are the over the air updates which adds new features to the car over time, in addition to fixing software bugs. Disney+ for example was only added recently to Teslas. Not too many other automakers would be able or willing to do that, for now at least.
    I also did two long road trips in my Model Y last summer, one to Yellowstone National Park, and another to the Grand Canyon. Both trips were around 8k miles/12.8k km round trip, and I had zero range anxiety the entire time, including driving through Arizona in August and the a/c keeping me comfortable. The only time I did a near 100% charge was prior to entering Yellowstone itself.
    I used about 30-35% of the battery while in the park due to the relatively low 45 mph/72 kph speed limit, and mostly because of bison-related traffic jams.
    I loved how Autopilot did the boring, mundane interstate driving, and at superchargers, I found the car often had enough battery to get to the next supercharger or hotel in the time I took to use the bathroom, stretch my legs, and grab a snack/drink. This also made me less tired overall since I didn't have to focus heavily on keeping the car in my lane and trying to figure out how fast the car in front was going.

I'm suspecting it is the heat pump. I'm not the only one experiencing this but when I went to the nearest SC, I was told that it normal. Not sure if that is true since my M3 also has a heat pump and I do not hear the same noise. This noise takes away from lack of noise in the cabin when idle, something I do enjoy with my M3.

    One of the big advantages that you mentioned indirectly is starting a car in the garage to get it warm in the winter. In Calf, this is no big deal but in Ohio it is. My garage is attached to the house, this meant either pulling the car out of the garage or opening the garage door to preheat the car. Opening the garage door would still leave the garage full of fumes that I really don't want to breathe. Pulling the car outside to preheat it kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a garage.

    I'm a fan and first tuned to your TH-cam before ordering Model3 SR Plus a year ago. Could you talk more about safety in front end collisions? Radar was damaged in a crash, so detectors were disabled. The vehicle in front was a huge black SUV but not an emergency vehicle.

    • @Geckogold
      @Geckogold 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a Tesla at least, the "frunk", or front trunk, provides not just cargo space, but acts as a huge crumple zone, so that it distributes the energy from a crash around the car rather than into the cabin. There have been many videos where a Tesla was in an accident, and the occupants could often walk out of the vehicle on their own. Compare that to say, a gas SUV/truck that rolls over multiple times, and the occupants often needing assistance to get out, and hospitalization in some cases.
      Another nice thing is the dash cam built into the car. And because it records from 4 different angles, in the event of an accident in which you weren't at fault, you can prove your innocence, instead of the "he said/she said" witness testimony.
      There's a TH-cam channel called "Wham Baam Teslacam" that shows accidents and other interesting things done around a Tesla. In many of those videos, when another car crashed into the Tesla, the other driver claims that the Tesla driver was at fault. They often then looked shocked and change their tune when they find out the Tesla recorded the accident from four angles, and in some cases, the police will cite the other driver with causing the accident if the other driver claimed the Tesla was at fault.

    Your first point is the thing that I believe is most misunderstood. All of the talk of needed 10's of thousands more public chargers distributed around the country really misses the point and reinforces the publics attitude about the inconvenience of EV's and EV charging. The primary focus should be on getting charging infrastructure in place for people who do not have a garage/home charging option (apartments/condos/workplaces). I bought my first EV (Mod 3) in September of 2019. At the time I, too, was worried about public charging infrastructure. After a week or so of having a fully charged car every morning I realized the amazing convenience of being able to charge my car at home. Yes, for the occasional long road trip I had to do a bit of advanced planning, but that is trivial compared to the every day convenience of charging at home. We are now a 2 EV household and couldn't imagine going back to regular stops at gas stations!

If for example a BEV has 3,500 battery cells (or equivalent) in its pack and we aim at 100% conversion from ICE to EV that's something like 6.3 Trillion cells and likely a time frame of 20+ years. Ordered a model 3 LR last month. Delivery says mid December. Debating if I should sell my gas vehicle or keep as a backup.

      Used car prices are insane right now so maybe sell and if you really miss it buy one when the prices drop down again.

      unless you do very frequent and very long roadtrips the model 3 lr will be more than sufficient with a decent amount of cargo space. If you are dependant on a lot of cargo space you could upgrade to the Model Y down the road.

      @@BizzMRK I’m more concerned about snow and cold weather. How does it do in the snow and cold weather?

    • @BizzMRK
      @BizzMRK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimbeam4111 it definitely has reduced range in cold weather. For the model 3 lr in 0°C enviorments I would estimate roughly around 300-400km should be possible depending on how you are driving. Tesla Björn released a video today where he tested the Model 3 SR+ in Winter (1°C, wet conditions) and managed 350km at 90kph and 260km at 120kph.
      The heatpump and battery heater do a good job of keeping range at a decent level and if weather is below freezing people tend to drive a bit slower than usual as well helping with range.
      If you want a worst case scenario, I found a video a while back of someone testing the range of the 2021 Model 3 SR+ in canadian winter at -30°C and he still managed to drive 175km on a single charge. The LR would probably get around 200-250km in these extreme conditions.

      No car is perfect, but after owning more than a dozen Benz, I have to say their build quality in Germany is outstanding and surpasses my expectations. I’m expecting that same exceptional quality coming out of Tesla Berlin.

    Two things -
    First was running the other day. Cars were passing me and the exhaust smelled bad, even in newer cars. Then two Teslas passed - so nice.
    Second- say the word “nuclear”. It won’t hurt a bit. 20% of the US power comes from nuclear. This zero emission power source is a good compliment to EVs.

    Insurance premiums are the only disadvantage that I see. Not sure, if it comes down over the next few years.
