Love this channel! Great video! Brought back memories, I used to own an supergun and a copy of Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting back in the day. I also had an Neo-Geo (cool SNK shirt, I remember the dog ad in EGM all those years ago lol) But unfortunately as we all tend to do growing up I sold it and really regret it. I play everything on mame now, but you're absolutely right about emulation. As someone who was a HUGE Neo-Geo fan, the Neo-Geo sound chip and music was legendary, but there's just something about that original hardware and sound that emulators just don't get right.when you're blasting through Metal Slug or classic KoF and Samurai Shodown music tracks. I've started to watch your channel and find it great as I'm going to get back into collecting. Loved the PC-Engine episode :) Thanks for the videos dude.
You never want to directly interface high impedance arcade video signals with low impedance (75Ω) consumer-grade equipment. Putting 3 trim-pots on the video outputs isn't how you properly shape TTL +5V logic analog video into a .7vPP low impedance termination. There should be a buffer in the video transmission lines between the arcade output and the TV/Scaler input that DC restores and attenuates the video, properly. Also, it doesn't appear that composite sync is being properly shaped, either. You're quite possibly jamming a +5v sync signal into equipment (Framemeister, TV, etc.) that has a power rating limit of 1.8V. Another good way to seep into ESD protection diodes of a piece expensive equipment for it to ultimately fail.
Voultar just curiosity but is this something that could possibly be fixed through a custom cable or a mod? Or would a whole new supergun be required? I've had one of these for a while now and have been using it with an MVS board on a Sony PVM but have recently acquired a framemeister. While searching to see if it was fine to use it with a framemeister I found this video and comment.
I bought one of these Superguns and I'm worried about blowing my OSSC. I've been doing some research and there are two options to make it safer. I plan on using #2, since the OSSC supports this. 1) Add 470 ohm resistor to pin 20 on SCART cable to properly attenuate CSYNC to a lower voltage or 2) Use AV3 input along with a custom SCART - VGA cable with 3.5mm audio, AV3 accepts TTL level voltage on CSYNC SCART (F) VGA (M) R pin 15 pin 1 G pin 11 pin 2 B pin 7 pin 3 S pin 20 pin 13 connect grounds on both
You need to regulate the flow of electricity to be the desired input for what ever device is receiving. So use some resistors? Those will limit the electrical flow, but I'm not sure how it will affect the data transmission to the frame mister. Don't have one to test either. This is a difficult and complicated issue to solve without having the hardware.
Very nice work, I've been looking at this board (with Miner Willy and his house keeper on the PCB!) and it's good to know it has your approval. I also have a picoPSU kicking around so it looks like I'm good to go if I get one. Super video as always Dimitri!
even though Retroelectronic has more adjustments otherwise comparable Vogatek can sometimes be found at like 8€, it comes in different configurations and even if it's lacking rgb level pots it does have versions with scart + 2x DB15 joystick ports, plenty enough for me
FireShootSK love it man. Recently heard a close family member had, so so upsetting and disappointing, man what an idiot he must be. And extremely hurtful of him towards us, as he knew his family would know.
Great video mate as always. Indeed emulation is almost perfect nowadays but I'm a person who is really sensitive to input lag. I can tell a difference from the SSF2X Grand Master Challenge board I own when compared to a perfect MAME setup for example. Loved the video, saw it on my lunch break. Keep these coming. PS: That Ghosts 'n Goblins is worth some serious money nowadays, treasure it!
I must say this is the coolest video I’ve seen from your channel so far. This is a great way to enjoy arcade games from home. Those arcade pcb boards are really a treat to gaming history. Just wanted to say keep up the great work and thanks for sharing these super cool gaming archives with us. Thumbs way up!!!
I just got my board today. Shipped from France. Haven't had time to do anything with it yet, but I can say that the build quality is great. Very well made and unbelievably inexpensive.
Wow and to think that I almost consolized my MVS! This opens up so much more possibilities, thanks very much for the clear, simple video! PS: I'll investigate further, but it seems that the Supergun you showcase in the video may be dangerous for the AV chain. Personally I think that I'll go for a custom built one, or a HAS
I agree that original hw is best. But with advancements for most people emulation is the way to go. The cost of og hw is just too great to not consider the option. Even if getting the base model supergun the pcbs can be very costly. Especially those that are sought after. They weren't made in the quantities that home ports were so rarity is almost a given on any pcb you may find. Add to the problem that most arcade owners (the ones that had the machines originally back in the 90s) weren't many times careful with the storage and handling making many pcbs damaged or corroded. One board might fire up the first time but might die the third because it was just the extra time it needed to fail due to hidden corrosion. And you might be out of the $1000+ Donkey Kong board. So those wanting to get into collecting might keep this in mind if you have a tight budget to begin with. Nice explanation on the Superguns though :)
I'd like to echo this idea as well. I don't do the game collecting, but I collect seriously old rare computers (old IBMs, PDPs, Commodore and Atari goodies, etc.) and if someone were to ask me how to play, say, Commander Keen, I'd tell them to spin up DosBox and have a blast. Collecting original antique devices of any sort is something you really have to yearn for and put the love into. It's a hobby that requires constant upkeep and a good bit of knowledge of software and hardware to understand all the little issues that can come up in these things. And when it works, it's a blast of charm and nostalgia that makes it feel so much better. But when it fails, and it will fail, it feels like an expensive doorstop and waste of time.
nice setup, my brother has one using emulation and a RPi 3 and when we play we didn't noticed any lag on the majority of the games. but this product seems to be pretty good.
I recently bought a Neo Geo CBOX/Arcade Supergun! And I've been streaming arcade games thru the JAMMA Pandoras Box 6, although I would LOVE to get some actual arcade PCBs! As well as some more MVS games! I only have Metal Slug 2, and to add a friend also gave me a Neo Geo CDZ, which I had modded by a awesome TH-camr called Retro Gaming Arts with the UnoBIOS Mod! But I'm happy that I got that MVS/Supergun combo!! Keep up the amazing work!! Happy gaming!

I seem to remember seeing a video about an FPGA board that can run most arcade hardware setups natively without emulation. The beauty to this arrangement is that you can upload any hardware (and its accompanying ROMs) you want instead of having to use the actual motherboard for each game (which could get REALLY expensive, really quick!) Game play is perfect, too, since there is no emulation going on.
Maybe you can do a video on some of the cheaper arcade boards and where to get them. Lots of people including myself don’t really bother with buying actual arcade boards because they can be extremely expensive. It would be nice to have at least a couple of games that aren’t $500...
This video is awesome. Also, the SEGA ashtray is a nice touch. I'm starting to get serious about getting a SFII cabinet. It'd be nice to be able to swap out different edition, and maybe even a couple different games like Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam. I didn't know that was possible until I saw this video. THANKS!
I remember playing Turtles in Time back in the early 90's, dang that was almost 30 years ago, that's just, crazy! Also the game was fun, I always picked Donatello
He is right about having an ear i noticed the music was messed up in street fighter 2 in the snes classic since i regularly play the original snes version.
This is very cool stuff, I didn't even know this kind of hardware even existed for an arcade pcb. I see getting started is within reason but after that it's a whole new ball game. Average arcade pcb is $100+ (working boards) the more popular arcade pcb games are $200+ The Neo Geo are going up in price for them carts, unless you buy knock offs. But still it's a very cool alternative instead of buying a arcade cab 👍
Dude, you must be psychic. I just recently started looking into this stuff, hoping to get a candy cab setup for my office. Sadly, space is an issue. Had to settle with customizing some Hori arcade sticks for my Pro and X with Sanwa parts in preparation for Street Fighter 30th Anniversary edition. It's SUPPOSED to play identical to the arcades.
about emulation frame lag, if you are using framemeister for HDMI and a LCD display, you have more lag than MAME... you only get lag free if using Scart/composite or alike on CRT
I actually found a decent Supergun by a company called Windy Gaming that I want to get. It's $320 with SCART cable, but it doesn't support GSCART. It has AV ports, built in audio attenuator/sync cleaner, built in PSU, and a JAMMA harness hardwired to the unit.
Great video, I have the same supergun and the sega genesis adapter, i use the adapter with my 6 button genesis controller. (theres a small button on the adapater to switch between 6/3 buttons mode)
I've built my own arcade cabinet from scratch (video on my channel). I had an old computer around and based it from that. I autoboot into BigBox with a little program I wrote :). Emulation for me was the best option as I can play any system I want.
Awesome video, I just got my hands on a Sega Astro City. Even though the subject is about the supergun it's very educational about jamma harnesses and arcade cabs as well. thanks a ton!
Love the video. Grew up in the arcade and always wanted to do something like this. Now thanks to your video I can see it’s really not that hard. Thanks again
Been studying electric circuits with semiconductors in them for a while now and then looking at that giant circuit board being larger than the average desktop pc motherboard. Interesting how technology have evolved over the years as this motherboard size while being big in the old times, I believe with some work it is possible to design a much smaller tablet or even phone sized device that performs all the functions of this device and then it will work. But those games that are made to be coin operated while being fun to play, they don't have a story mode or anything due to the fact at that time, the companies rely on quarters to make money as you deposit a quarter, you rent the ability to play and they make the game get progressively harder so either you get good or it will cost you a lot of quarters to reach the higher levels and even then at the end there might not even be a final boss, you might just get a high score if you are good or lucky.
A large problem with video capture of any non standard NTSC signal is the frame rate. Many Arcade machines don't cycle at 59.94 FPS and capture cards basically need the timing to be correct or you will get no signal, or one that cuts in and out. How are you handling capturing with just the OSSC which is just a line doubler, and not a frame synchronizer? Does Elgato HD60 frame synchronize material that isn't perfect 59.94/60.0?
I have a bunch of boards but did not know about these adapters and that is after looking for something along this line. Looks like they all come out of France. Thanks!!
Thank you for this video! I have a NeoGeo MVS motherboard withafew ganes that my uncle gave me a long time ago and I didn't know what to do with them, until now. I'll give this a shot.
I love your videos. If you can conected a stick via usb to the super gun, buy a reagular arcade stick like a TE Round 2 or similar. Six bottons for arcade games is much better than 4 (neo geo). What song are playing in 6:56?... sound like despeche mode.
Was hesitant about getting into this at first, but your video made it look achievable. Question though: I'm looking to start collecting CPS2 PCBs. Are these compatible with the SuperGun? Thanks :)
Dario Hajic They are, however depending on the supergun you may need a kick harness for six buttons games like SF unless you use his method of using a genesis controller. Last time I was looking these up someone mentioned that a few come with the kick harness installed.
I'm curious are you an Australian living in America? I've noticed a lot of your pronunciation and terminology is different to the words we use in Australia (eg Sodder instead of solder, genesis instead of megadrive). Also its refreshing to see "retro" content that doesn't involve emulation. Keep up the great work.
He's picked up our bad North American habits... Having spent all my life in Canada, I never realized people pronounced it any other way than 'sodder' until I watched overseas TH-camrs :)
I recently bought a JAMMA cabinet complete with old school CRT 15Hz :D its lovely! 20 years after I finally got my ARCADE MACHINE!! With it came a JAMMA SnowBros! Then I added a JAMMA version Pandora Box 4. Whats your opinion a out Pandora Box? its a kind of emulation if im not mistaken? but still looks pretty legit, I get some slow'downs on extreme sprite games like some shoot'em ups.
I'd bet money that your "trained eye" would not be able to tell the difference between SF2 or TMNT being played on a properly set-up PC with Groovymame outputting native res (and refresh) to a CRT and the original PCBs played on the same monitor. Also, an upscaler like a framemeister will introduce it's own input lag even on original hardware. Lag is caused by image processing and poor quality joysticks. While there may always be a tiny difference with emulation, the current Groovymame is so good that it is just not perceivable. I've had the SF2 PCB running side by side with GM. It looks and plays the same.
Maybe, Maybe not. In the end what matters is the player getting the best experience for them. if an emulator works for you, right on. if original hardware works for him, good stuff. I collect and restore old consoles and arcade hardware myself. In recent years I've found it hard to see or feel a clear difference unless I'm intentionally focusing and trying to find it.
I also work with arcade hw but that's just for electronics fun, all my retrogaming is fpga or retroarch. mostly because real hw just doesn't have the features and convenience of modern systems. pausing, hiscore saves, retroachievements, different hacks and cheats (if I feel like using them) etc are things not easily doable on real hardware.
For me it's the same difference as playing vinyl or listening to something on i-tunes, if i could really tell the difference or not, I do not know, but it definitely loses some magic for me playing arcade games on emulators
hey very great ! I really like those arcade cabinets and maybe in the future i'll made one myself :) Just a quick question, why using a PICO 20 PINs power-Supply when the motherboard seems to need a 24 PINs ?
Awesome video bro. very informative. Question, what kind of power supply adapter board did you use to plug in the pico psu? can you provide a link where to buy one please. Thanks in advance.
The real board is the actual game, the supergun itself dont contain any game, its just a product to let the arcade board (game) communicate with non-arcade hardware, like your television and USB arcade sticks.
wow , this was my old dream , like most of my friends at my age , anyway i managed to get some of my dream achieved when i started working in maintenance of those machines , back in the old days
What about games like the mortal kombat series, that utilise aux wiring, out of jamma standerd. Would that work with these superguns? I actually have a umk3 arcade cabinet and own all the pcb's in the series, but this is still interesting...
Two questions. The retroelectronik its a good supergun for use with the ossc ? I read that some supergun can fry and kill the supergun. And thar dell monitor, how you connect to it? Look super impressive.
Hi, Thanks for the video! Can you tell us some more about the kind of controller you would use to have all buttons functional? Got a link? And also, about the upscaler. You can't just plug the scart output into a PAL TV? Right? Thanks!
A jamma gpio adaptor is great, you can use 15 khz with original resolution like a ati gpu, also 31 khz is ok too..with the rasp 4 4go soon we will have Cave..Atomiswave...Naomi..maybe taito type x..and 2D,2,5D steam like Cuphead..kof 2002 U.M..in 640x480p. all these stuff were so important back then. Now,a arcade cabinet at home is always a great feeling..nice nostalgic party with eurodance..rock grunge..new wave.. I will check a new one..MK cabinet (but with a moniteur bvm inside 15/31 khz 'hd',2.1 stereo 50w,a pc hyperspin,jammasd..and a run button),only for MK series..run n gun..shmup.
Thank you for this very informative video. It’s been my dream to own a real pac man machine... I’ll likely never be able to have an actual cabinet, but to game on an original board might be the next best thing and it’s surprisingly affordable! I could see myself picking up PCBS of a few “classics” for that extra authenticity in the home. Are there any recommendations for a good joystick? I doubt most of the games I’d be interested in would need more than 1 or 2 buttons but I suppose it would be nice to have something that does it all.
One of my favorite games from the early 80's was Polybius.

This was awesome. I had no idea about the Supergun.
Great video!
The part about the pico-psu got me interested in getting one for my own supergun. How much power would you recommend it deliver?
Could you put a link for the power supply you used? :)
I love your videos. If you can conected a stick via usb to the super gun, buy a reagular arcade stick like a TE Round 2 or similar. Six bottons for arcade games is much better than 4 (neo geo).
What song are playing in 6:56?... sound like despeche mode.
I’d be more interested on how to best obtain a Blast City or Vewlix cab, (especially in the area of best pricing, and shipping options).
I console-ized a Neo Geo 1-slotter the hard way three or four years ago. Wish I would've known about Superguns back then!
Yo big question, does a supergun add input lag when compared to traditional arcade board wiring? I'm thinking it wouldn't, but wanted to double check.
So with super gun i can play any arcade pcb board?
Hey I just found this video but I was wondering how would use a kick harness or add a 6 button controller
Turtles in time looks amazing on that dell ultrasharp monitor! I still want to do this setup even though this is a year later.
LCD, QLED, LED, OLED Monitors aren't good, they are just garbage (60Hz video content or less). Try a CRT TV or a Plasma HDTV.
I recently bought a JAMMA cabinet complete with old school CRT 15Hz :D its lovely! 20 years after I finally got my ARCADE MACHINE!!
With it came a JAMMA SnowBros! Then I added a JAMMA version Pandora Box 4. Whats your opinion a out Pandora Box? its a kind of emulation if im not mistaken? but still looks pretty legit, I get some slow'downs on extreme sprite games like some shoot'em ups.
nothing beats the real hardware!
The Time will... eventually. I hope we can preserve and repair a LOT of machines that must be there somewhere...
now i know what a super gun is and am dreaming of my own setup, marvel vs capcom or street fighter 3 would be amazing
Those Japanese gabinets are absolutely awesome!!!
Hi - Amazing video here. Where can I buy that ATX pin-plug adapter? You could please provide a link for it?
Good video. Rpi input lag also depends from the controller you are using.
Have you ever tried Mister Fpga solution ?
OSSC does not add input lag at all
For me it's the same difference as playing vinyl or listening to something on i-tunes, if i could really tell the difference or not, I do not know, but it definitely loses some magic for me playing arcade games on emulators
Excellent video! Totally jealous of your cabs.
thanks brotha!
Ok how do you connect this to a HDMI TV?
Also do you have videos how to put together an arcade cabinet?
Most Excellent street fighter theme cover.
hey very great ! I really like those arcade cabinets and maybe in the future i'll made one myself :)
Just a quick question, why using a PICO 20 PINs power-Supply when the motherboard seems to need a 24 PINs ?
Awesome video bro. very informative. Question, what kind of power supply adapter board did you use to plug in the pico psu? can you provide a link where to buy one please. Thanks in advance.
Thanks this helped a lot. Arcade PCB and Mame Machine in tandem.
6:45 you said that was all that we needed but then in your next shot you have a real arcaboard plugged into your device what is the real board doing
The real board is the actual game, the supergun itself dont contain any game, its just a product to let the arcade board (game) communicate with non-arcade hardware, like your television and USB arcade sticks.
Is there a way to use the same setup but instead of using the controller using a arcade stick and buttons?
wow , this was my old dream , like most of my friends at my age , anyway i managed to get some of my dream achieved when i started working in maintenance of those machines , back in the old days
Where are some good places you would recommend purchasing arcade PCB's from
What about games like the mortal kombat series, that utilise aux wiring, out of jamma standerd. Would that work with these superguns? I actually have a umk3 arcade cabinet and own all the pcb's in the series, but this is still interesting...
This is awesome. I love this.
Have you tried the pico power supply with a CPS2 board by any chance?
Also, can you wire up an arcade joystick and buttons directly to this supergun?
This is awasome hobby !
Two questions. The retroelectronik its a good supergun for use with the ossc ? I read that some supergun can fry and kill the supergun.
And thar dell monitor, how you connect to it? Look super impressive.
Hi,
Thanks for the video!
Can you tell us some more about the kind of controller you would use to have all buttons functional? Got a link?
And also, about the upscaler. You can't just plug the scart output into a PAL TV? Right?
Thanks!
Hello, RGB output 240p?
you can put the link from where you bought the PICOpsu, laptop AC Power Supply Adapter,
pad2neogeo adapater?
A jamma gpio adaptor is great, you can use 15 khz with original resolution like a ati gpu, also 31 khz is ok too..with the rasp 4 4go soon we will have Cave..Atomiswave...Naomi..maybe taito type x..and 2D,2,5D steam like Cuphead..kof 2002 U.M..in 640x480p.
all these stuff were so important back then.
Now,a arcade cabinet at home is always a great feeling..nice nostalgic party with eurodance..rock grunge..new wave..
I will check a new one..MK cabinet (but with a moniteur bvm inside 15/31 khz 'hd',2.1 stereo 50w,a pc hyperspin,jammasd..and a run button),only for MK series..run n gun..shmup.
awesome. this is a great unit. great vids.
Thanks for the discovery ! Where can we buy arcade board ?
Would it be difficult to wire arcade controls to the super gun instead of using a neogeo console controller?
Nice find with that Turtles PCB.
How would I record gameplay without a supergun? When it's directly hooked up to a cabinet like yours? I have a blast city just like that
