Online with the Sega Dreamcast and a DreamPi in 2018 | MVG

  • The Sega Dreamcast is an online capable machine that utilized the now defunct SegaNet service. Many dreamcast online game servers have since been retired and shut down over the years.
    In today's high speed online broadband world the Sega Dreamcast modem is only a relic of the past
    However, the DreamPi changes all that - its a piece of hardware that brings The Sega Dreamcast back online and back to playing those classic online games from the early 2000's.

      Luckily my parents had a all inclusive ISP so I got a newer Dreamkey disc and manually entered the settings so no phone bill, still used to get parents moaning about being on the internet as they were expecting a call though, and often if someone rang it cut me off middle of a game.

    Great video man! Hopefully it'll get some more people interested in joining the online community. :-) P.S. The games that are offline aren't offline because they aren't supported by DreamPi, they just don't have any servers. The server software for each game needs to be reverse-engineered. This is a very time consuming process but one-by-one they're being revived. Mainly thanks to an awesome guy named Shuouma who is some sort of super genius.

    • @DreamcasticChannel

      Technically you can only use the Saturn web browser with DreamPi. The actual games are direct dial and not really "online". You can play Saturn NetLink games if you still have a landline phone. VOIP solutions have been found as well.

      Starlancer is on PC, Worms World party is on pc, Quake 3 is on pc, Chu chu Rocket android, Sonic Adventure is on PC though i can't remember if it has online. Tetris i'm not sure on this particular version but others are available online. 4x4 Evolution is playable on pc. So thats 7 (assuming sonic can have the online function on PC). The rest of the games are alot less exciting in my opinion (not saying their bad games). That said there's a couple not working yet that could be amazing. I'll probably do this to relive Phantasy Star Online as it was the game that brought me and my best mate together. Not hating just saying the games i played online back then are mostly available elsewhere .

    • @DreamcasticChannel
      @DreamcasticChannel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      ChuChu Rocket! actually isn't available on smartphones anymore. Sega removed it. Even when it was available though, it didn't have an online mode. Next Tetris only had an online mode on the North American Dreamcast version. I didn't count Sonic Adventure because it's not really online multiplayer; it just has a website and leaderboards. Starlancer is on PC but the online mode no longer works.

    • @chrisboyle704
      @chrisboyle704 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Didn't know that they'd removed Chu chu rocket, i got it a few years ago and i'm sure i played it online then though. Starlancer is still playable online as far as i know. It was a recently as last year unless something has changed. Next Tetris fair point but i did say that other version are available and lets face it, its all tetris. Agreed on Sonic adventure not a real online experience.

    • @DreamcasticChannel
      @DreamcasticChannel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The iOS version of ChuChu had local multiplayer over Wi-Fi but no online play. The Android version didn't even have that though. I forget if the PC version of Starlancer used GameSpy but if it did, it went offline in 2014 when they closed their doors.

    Still have 2 Dreamcasts, my first one and another one I repaired the door switch on. Really had a great time playing phantasy star, football and quake. My daughters boyfriend at the time actually walked in and asked who (football team) was playing, he really thought he was watching an actual (not video game) game. Great console, had really good PC ports as well.

      It was Sega that failed. They took all the hard learned lessons from the Saturn mess, corrected all the problems. They had the Dreamcast devkits out well in advance. They had a decent game lineup at launch. Dreamcast didn't have the funky dual CPU setup of the Saturn that had so many games using half the console's capability. (Sega should have made it a requirement to use the full power of Saturn, and to help with that should have communicated far better to the game companies how to do it.)
      But then Sega did that stupid "It's Thinking" ad campaign, dumped the SEGA! scream, and worst of all they did not have SegaNet ready at launch. That lack had some of the early games being published without the online multiplayer they were intended to have, like Armada. Then when a short time later Sega stabbed Dreamcast to death by announcing they'd make no more home consoles, it was done.
      Leaving the CD-R boot capability in the firmware, which opened the door to burned game copies, likely didn't have all that huge an influence. It took forever and week to rip a game through the serial port, then if the game was over 750 meg, stuff either had to be left out and the game hacked to ignore the missing stuff, or massively compress and reduce the quality of textures and audio. Could hack a game to ignore missing music files, or replace them with silent dummy files a few K size so they'd 'play' but not actually do anything.
      Downloading 750 meg ISO files was a difficult thing in the days when most people had dialup.
      So Dreamcast pirates had to be quite patient and live with games that looked bad and/or sounded bad. If you had the $ to afford broadband you had the $ to just buy the games.

    Lord. If that video was actual VGA from the Dreamcast, I missed out. The visuals are so smooth and clean.
    It was still fun to play on my little 12 inch bedroom CRT as a kid, and again on PC when the SCHTHACK servers first came up back in the 00's!
    All the time spent grinding mags and killing the Dragon and Dark Falz over... and over... and over...
    Really glad to see there is a semi plug n' play solution now... I remember putting together a Linux dial-up server to bridge my DSL connection to my DC. One of my first Linux projects and probably laid the foundation for my future career in Networking and Telco.

I bought it in about 2008 for about $200, and lol, i thought that was high priced at the time. Guy in video said he experienced some lag in the online Quake session, cause of the routing through the stock DC modem, I bet using the DC Broadband Adapter it would not lag. If you already have a RaspberryPi laying around that you tinker with and have even a small amount of soldering experience they are cheap and easy to make!

    I know this is an US/NTSC Dreamcast, however, do you know if I could somehow direct connect the Dreamcast to a USB modem that's attached to a Rasberry?
    Sources usually mention PAL modems require two line voltage reducers in the cable so everything works but also one to be there for US/JP modems to work.
    So did you just have luck with your USB modem?

    • @DreamcasticChannel
      @DreamcasticChannel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Line voltage inducer not "reducer". lol His modem is modified with the inducer built in. It still only works with US/JP Dreamcast modems though. If you have a PAL Dreamcast, you can either import a US/JP modem and use it with your PAL Dreamcast or use a separate 18v line voltage inducer cable that plugs into a second USB port on the Pi.

    • @MegaManNeo
      @MegaManNeo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My bad but now that I looked at the Dreamcastlive website, they also seem to sell PAL USB modems for the Raspberry (or any other Linux machine for that matter).
      Do these still need modifications or is it just as plug and play?

    • @DreamcasticChannel
      @DreamcasticChannel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're not USB modems, they're cables that plug into a separate USB modem that you need to buy yourself. No modification required. You just plug it in.

And they've been releasing new platforms -- the PS3, the PS4, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the Wii U and the Switch.... I wish Sega sees this video at some point, just so they know what kind of impact they've made in the past 20 years.... with _one console._

    I got bought my first Dreamcast in winter of 2002 when I was 11 years old. I missed the boat on the online features of the system, but regardless I fell in love with the console. I’ve always wished for an easy way to experience Dreamcast online, and I believe my wish has been granted. I will certainly be getting a DreamPi in the near future, and look forward to joining the online community!

    The Dreamcast was my first step to the internet and i spent sooo many hours browsing the web and playing Quake 3 Arena against people from all over the world. The phone bill was quite heavy thou… but at least with the Dreamkey Browser 3.0 we got the chance to chose our own ISP and the minute price got a lot cheaper. I even had my first Email address at the Dream Arena. Loved uploading levels for Chu Chu Rocket and at one point even shared savegames with other folks. I never loved a console this much before or after. Even today i can proudly look back at having been part of that console online gaming pioneer days while Playsation fanboys still waited for the PS2 and even the online features that all came much later. Even with the 33k modem that we europeans got with our consoles, it was still possible to have lots of fun online. I even had the keyboard. It was a prize that i won when i took part at a online challenge at the Dream Arena. A lot of people got one. And I still have it. Didn't need the mouse. The Keyboard was really the most useful piece of hardware you could get for your online experience. A friend of mine had the mouse and played Quake 3 on the Dreamcast like on a PC.

      Nick Dews it isn't they don't realise they can profit from it it is more like there isn't enough profit. They would literally have to restock shelves with old systems and hire people to maintain the community by offering more ram/faster servers. For now we should just leave it to the people with no lives to figure out.
