  • Hey fellow artists! Have you ever tried botanical gelli printing? In this week's episode of the Susan McCreevy artist TH-cam Channel, Susan talks about her beautiful art project using the jelly plate in Inverness. She experimented with pastel colors and different types of paper to create mottled backgrounds, patterns, and text. Susan used leaves with texture, a comb to make marks, and added layers to previously printed papers.
She also tried using Jane Montieth tea bag paper, which is strong and unlikely to rip, for added depth and texture. As she experimented with different techniques, Susan discovered happy accidents in her art and found that even discarded papers could end up being the best prints. In the end, Susan created a stunning collage with gelli print and multiple layers.
"Teabag Paper is paper is lightweight and thin, yet holds up to multiple washings without breaking down. It can be incorporated into your mixed media collage work, encaustic paintings, gelliplate and Cyanotype printmaking!"

I would even like to watch the long version! Not so great prints teach as much as really successful prints! Love your work!

I love watching you work. I have a 6 x 6 gelli plate but enjoy experimenting with that. I am interested that you keep adding more layers. I have used papers for book covers but you have given me more ideas. Thank you

Thanks Susan, really appreciate you sharing your tips! I'm finally understanding that lots of play is the key 😊 and now know to use white when things are looking muddy ❤

Thank you! Yes I’ve saved many muddy prints by adding a very dark colour on top or a very light colour… works every time 😀

Thank you Susan, this is such a good video! The fact that not every print is always successful, is so important to know. Somedays I"ll print for 1-2 hours with only a few prints that I like. But if you look at them the next day, they actually look good. Some even beautiful! Lots of practise, and to know which paints work in your specific climate is very helpful.
