  • Today, I want to give you a good answer to the question “Tell me about yourself”.
    This is truly the best way to answer the question, tell me about yourself. Its authentic, genuine, sincere, honest, and HUMAN.
    I see so many people out there giving these cold, corporate, inhuman-type answers, because they talk about just their accomplishments and their work experience, and that’s it. But a good answer is an honest answer. So, when an employer asks them, “Tell me about yourself” they just rattle off their accomplishments and some of their work experience and then stay there.
    Learn how to give a good honest answer to: TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF by hiring expert: Don Georgevich of: jobinterviewto...

    Out of all the videos I've watched on this particular subject, you're the only one who talked about this question as being a way to make a "connection" with the potential employer; a warmer, more personal, and more human way of answering this question instead of interpreting and answering this question as a "tell me about all the great things you did." I love this method! If it were me hiring, this is what I would want to hear from the candidate, and not "all the great things you did. I know your great, that's why I called you in for an interview" kinda thing. Thank you for this great and insightful video!

It turned out a walk in the park. Easiest ever and I think this was so easy, because I knew exactly, that with the prep you provided for free here, I will be safe no matter what. I have another channel I subscribe to and I've been watching DOZENS of videos in preparation for an upcoming series of interviews. The other channel is good, however, that channel offers a rapid-fire reply of generic positive attributes about myself that I personally wouldn't feel comfortable saying. This is by FAR a better fit for me and these 15 minutes gave me a boost and direction to take when this question is asked. Thank you Don.

    This is such a dangerous question for an employer to ask as it opens them up to such risk. “Tell me about yourself” invites a person to give interests/associations/details that, if the recruiter doesn’t hire the candidate, puts the company at risk for discrimination accusations. “Oh they didn’t hire me because I told them I was involved with X.”
    I really appreciated how Don made this about the professional journey without going into the truly personal.

    HI Mr Don,
    I have been searching for the answer of this question Tell me about yourself. I found many of the interview coaches saying that we must focus on our accomplishments and experiences to sell ourselves in the answer of this question.
    Last month I went for an interview with a multinational company . When the HR guy asked me this particular question i told him my story how did i enter into the health and safety field and how i helped organizations and workers to stay safe.
    But i felt by the end of my answer everybody in the interview panel was boored to death.
    I think they are not sitting to listen to the stories. They want us to show them our skills and accomplishments and what values we can bring for that particular organization.

    Mr. Don i always used to follow your above mentioned approach but here is my own take of tell me about yourself answer... In the start of your career when you dont have to talk alot about your professional career yes you should start with your earliest days and inspirations etc but when u are interviewed for a senior level position i suppose they dont expect you to tell when did u start and how you got inspired they are actually looking out for what you have achieved so far in your career and there is a difference in the two phases... A young graduate can talk about his early childhood stories and people listen to him and often be careful but if you are 35 yr old story teller they wont even bother going back to your early career.... they will get bored to the point of indifference...

    But the fact that this question is already premeditated and prepared, it takes away that sincere genuine response that you can only receive after asking a candid question. I love the advice and I will use it, but honestly, the entire interview process is probably the most unnatural way to determine who is a good candidate. Just like people nowadays understand that an IQ exam won’t measure all aspects of a person’s intelligence, likewise interviews don’t measure a candidates actual competence to a job - and organizations need to realize this. The problem is, nobody is willing to make a real change to this issue which is hurting many companies from hiring well qualified people who have a great personality - unfortunately recruiters and HR expect to be able to see all that after asking 10 generic questions and meeting someone face to face for ~45 minutes. If this isn’t true, just ask HR how many employees turn out bad? They may blame it on employee de-motivation or low corporate morale, however if recruiters/HR is conducting extensive interviews with so many barriers shouldn’t they find candidates who won’t do this because they’re “perfect”???

    • @thanksmaddytv815
      @thanksmaddytv815 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn’t if you have an outline. Sometimes people have to think back, because they have been at a company for years. As you look over the outline you should be using your personality and what comes to you at that time related to the outline (meaning it is naturally flowing).

    Interviewers have already read your resume, and may even have verified the information therein. Interviewers do not need you to repeat what they already know about you. If you have been called in for an interview, it is because, at least on paper, you are probably already qualified to do the job.
    Interviews are most often about just one thing: whether your prospective employer thinks that he/she can get along with you as a person well enough to be able to deal with you every workday. There may or may not be additional job-specific questions in that interview (just to test some of your claims of experience/competence), but at the core of every interview is: can your personality fit into the existing collection of personalities at the workplace?

    • @thep2ann
      @thep2ann 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. I feel like, at least on a subconscious level, the interview determines whether the employer likes you as a person, whether he or she feels comfortable with you (perhaps they prefer introverts or extraverts), and whether you are the kind of person he or she imagines in the role. This is why I prefer phone interviews: it cuts down on subconscious bias, and I believe it forces the interviewer to focus more on your experience and qualifications. In fact, I once had a boss who conducted all of his interviews over the phone with candidates all over the country (its an industry in which there were few local candidates). He said that in some instances, after meeting a new hire for the first time, he would feel like he "wanted his money back." He had an aggressive, boisterous personality, and I believe he liked working with people similar to himself. However, I believe interviewing over the phone was an asset, not a hinderance, because it forced him to focus on what's most important - and it also led to a more diverse collection of personalities in the workplace.

    PREPERATION IS KEY! I went into my first interview and stumbled through it. After watching your videos and tips, I had a different interview and practically ran it myself! I asked most of the questions and when I apologized for asking so many questions, they said,”It’s fine, you are talking our lingo!” I will let you know WHEN I get the offer!
    The only thing I didn’t ask and it was not brought up was pay. I didn’t think to ask what the salary range would be, to see if it was in line with my current job. I hope you have a video in that, because that’s a little tricky. I’ve heard that the candidates shouldn’t be the one to bring it up. Can we get your advice please? Thx again!!

    • @maddysydney
      @maddysydney 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yanan chen The reality is the answer is about 2 mins long. Remember that the interviewer is also using this as an ice breaker and giving you an opportunity to speak by asking an open ended question. Anything less than 2 mins to talk through 5-10 years of work experience seems too curt and a missed opportunity for you to control the conversation.

    Hello Mr. Don, the "Tell me about Yourself" is a difficult question to answer enthusiastically especially when your story involves accidentally stumbling into an insurance job that turned into a career - no real plans - the company just offered varied job opportunities so I stayed. I manage to stay 10 plus years with no earth shaking accomplishments. How does one spin that into an inspirational "tell about yourself story?

    • @CrzyGazara

      spin a side story why you stayed those 10 years maybe to support your family or something dont? make the job the main focus make the the time the focus 10 years is very good indication that you can be committed to a place.
