This is such a dangerous question for an employer to ask as it opens them up to such risk. “Tell me about yourself” invites a person to give interests/associations/details that, if the recruiter doesn’t hire the candidate, puts the company at risk for discrimination accusations. “Oh they didn’t hire me because I told them I was involved with X.” I really appreciated how Don made this about the professional journey without going into the truly personal.

Its just difficult because in prior videos I have heard not to "give your life story" or relay the question to anything that doesn't involve the position.
Awesome, Don, Great answers to the about yourself question. The connection is the key, then tell them why you became what professional you are... It's so obvious and simple, that's why you are correct. Thank you, I have an interview in the am, will use this.
But the fact that this question is already premeditated and prepared, it takes away that sincere genuine response that you can only receive after asking a candid question. I love the advice and I will use it, but honestly, the entire interview process is probably the most unnatural way to determine who is a good candidate. Just like people nowadays understand that an IQ exam won’t measure all aspects of a person’s intelligence, likewise interviews don’t measure a candidates actual competence to a job - and organizations need to realize this. The problem is, nobody is willing to make a real change to this issue which is hurting many companies from hiring well qualified people who have a great personality - unfortunately recruiters and HR expect to be able to see all that after asking 10 generic questions and meeting someone face to face for ~45 minutes. If this isn’t true, just ask HR how many employees turn out bad? They may blame it on employee de-motivation or low corporate morale, however if recruiters/HR is conducting extensive interviews with so many barriers shouldn’t they find candidates who won’t do this because they’re “perfect”???
It doesn’t if you have an outline. Sometimes people have to think back, because they have been at a company for years. As you look over the outline you should be using your personality and what comes to you at that time related to the outline (meaning it is naturally flowing).
I'm 43 yo and I haven't worked in years, l've been staying at home as a full-time Carer, looking after 2 people, my 72yo Schziophrenic mother, whom has Arthritis in her arms and legs and can't walk at times, and my 53yo brother whom is also ill and has back pain, because he hurt his back at work years ago. l'm on the Carer Pension and Carer Allowance from Centrelink ( Social security) , so l can't go outside much, l just exercise in my front yard and write in my diary why l'm happy and what l'm grateful for and write down my goals, like l really want to have a place of my own someday, so l'm saving up to buy an apartment or house someday. Your smug, short-sighted reply is actually so funny. Maybe you should watch "how to read between the lines" next.
This is a pretty good tip. I never looked at it that way when someone asked me tell me about yourself, first thing comes too mind is to talk about the job. I'm going to heed this information.
Fantastic information, very well said...and I will forever remember this moment because in my interviews I was that cold, statistical robot spewing fact without personalization. Thank you, again great information!
I like what I heard, you are a great leader and I want to follow your strategies to get hired to the job I already applied if I am called for the interview. I know now how to be prepared for the interview. Thanks!
I had an interview 2 days ago. Two Interviewers, both about 20 yrs old, and both primarily interested in wanting me to tell personal, not work things about myself. I think it's more about finding followers and social clique fit.
Self introduction should be as short and concise as possible. Dont waste time talking about your personal life. Employers look for how you can add value to the company and not how exciting your life journey is
That is what is wrong with society. We only look at an employee as what they can do for the company. We are human beings with complex social structures. If we remain sterile in our professional interactions, including interviews, it makes a culture where people wont want to stay at that company.
Of course, the interview panel might have gone through about background information like name and nationality, and city/country where we reside, etc. I would like further know that can we start our introduction by telling our name and Nationality or country we reside, please advise thank you.
I love your videos! Thanks for all your help! I would like to see videos for foreign graduates coming to the US, how they can achieve good jobs opportunities
yanan chen The reality is the answer is about 2 mins long. Remember that the interviewer is also using this as an ice breaker and giving you an opportunity to speak by asking an open ended question. Anything less than 2 mins to talk through 5-10 years of work experience seems too curt and a missed opportunity for you to control the conversation.
Interviewers have already read your resume, and may even have verified the information therein. Interviewers do not need you to repeat what they already know about you. If you have been called in for an interview, it is because, at least on paper, you are probably already qualified to do the job. Interviews are most often about just one thing: whether your prospective employer thinks that he/she can get along with you as a person well enough to be able to deal with you every workday. There may or may not be additional job-specific questions in that interview (just to test some of your claims of experience/competence), but at the core of every interview is: can your personality fit into the existing collection of personalities at the workplace?
I agree. I feel like, at least on a subconscious level, the interview determines whether the employer likes you as a person, whether he or she feels comfortable with you (perhaps they prefer introverts or extraverts), and whether you are the kind of person he or she imagines in the role. This is why I prefer phone interviews: it cuts down on subconscious bias, and I believe it forces the interviewer to focus more on your experience and qualifications. In fact, I once had a boss who conducted all of his interviews over the phone with candidates all over the country (its an industry in which there were few local candidates). He said that in some instances, after meeting a new hire for the first time, he would feel like he "wanted his money back." He had an aggressive, boisterous personality, and I believe he liked working with people similar to himself. However, I believe interviewing over the phone was an asset, not a hinderance, because it forced him to focus on what's most important - and it also led to a more diverse collection of personalities in the workplace.
Man, I hate this question.... actually I just hate interviews.

Great idea, never thought about that. Usually, I always get stuck on that one.
I just can't unsee you as Dr. Lewis Zimmerman from Star Trek voyager!
It's always about the journey... and what you've learned along the way to where you are now. Good advice Don! 👍
exactly!
This is the most unique way to answer this. Will try this and I hope It will help me land the job. Wish me luck! 🤞
Best of luck!
Great video, Don! I agree it's important to be warm and personal while communicating your professional story.
Mr. Don, why haven't I seen this before? I genuinely love your insight; the other day I was checking out quite a number of ideas from people like you, they were great, but yours OMG.. I listened to you without a blink, this is exactly what I'm gonna do during my interview in a few days, thank you really. You took me back in time, and those great moments flashed back slowly as you went by, thank you indeed!
Everybody has something different to say on this. Lol. I'm starting to think I was doing it right all along
That was helpful, thank you.
Behind every passion is a story. Find yours.
I love this, thank you so much for offering a more authentic guide for answering an important interview question. I will use your tips!
I love finance. I have a variety of experience, warehousing, manufacturing, retail, office, but I'm looking for a book shelves position
Hey Don Thankyou for your tips and tricks this really gave an insight into a simple questions but it is open ended but your output really gave me an insight into such simple question but it is how you answer it will actually land the job
You did an awesome job in this presentation. Thank you!🙏🙏👌👌👌
Glad you liked it!
I had an interview and I was very well prepared base on all of your videos. Thank you!
This was great! Thank you. Talking about the journey really is helping me with this particular question. I definitely feel more confident now. Again, thank you!
some said that this kind of tactics will fail you..there are different interviewer that dont like to hear your past
saitama saitamas so I guess it only depends on what type of person the interviewer is. Because some interviewers likes this kind of approach and some do not.
@@amjasperroetupal461stfwfms9 that's why it's important to ask them what exactly would they like to hear. Your past or present. Or your accomplishments.
I told the actual hiring manager at Petco corporate on how I started my product development career after my internship @ a fortune 500 corporate office , the experiencewas directlyrelatedtothe positioni applied, she cut me off and said we might be running out of time! I was rejected but I treated it as my warm up interview for my next dream job interview coming up
I don't have a pet anyway
Thanks again Don! I am a longtime subscriber and I am in a tough spot. I still don't know what I want to do. I am a 'multipotentialite', I have many interests and like to pursue them. I am good at everything I do. I have a hard time with this question because I don't know how to quantify my experience :(
"You always have me in stitches". Thanks Don for that presentation
Comig back here again lol !!!! Supervisor Position interview , this guy is the boss
you are awesome
recruiter cut me off after 1 minute and said we might be running out of time. I was talking about how I get to work in my specialty field after college at a Fortune 500 company
Thanks. Iam a medical assistant student. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍. I have Interview on Friday
Love the authenticity!
Then, why have we been taught forever to give them why we are qualified for the job?
Awesome site, great info and advice; a true service to many. And you have such a real and likeable personality.
Sincere thanks, Don
I appreciate that!
Its just difficult because in prior videos I have heard not to "give your life story" or relay the question to anything that doesn't involve the position.
everyone has an opinion on this question and truth be told, there is no one right way -- its just different for everyone.
@@DonGeorgevich best way is to combine both ways
Thank you very much.👏👏👏
I love these information. This is what am looking for. Thanks Mr don
glad to help you my friend.
And l write down my other goals too.
Best of luck to you
As always..good advice.
May be your explanation is correct but in the contemporary situation nobody has 15 minutes time to watch your entire video whereas answering this question takes a minute. Please stop beating around the bush and be precise your in your content so that you will be able get a million views
Spoken like a true INTJ :-)
As an INTJ I agree @@Gigi-wb8pe
Your smug, short-sighted reply is actually so funny. What he's doing by taking such a long time, is giving you enough information that you don't have to sound rehearsed when answering this question, which is extremely important during the interview process. Maybe you should watch "how to read between the lines" next.
Exactly
Thank you for everything your video is helpful
I imagine a world where the employer should convince you to work for them.
That’s what they should do
This is a pretty good tip. I never looked at it that way when someone asked me tell me about yourself, first thing comes too mind is to talk about the job. I'm going to heed this information.
glad to help you.
Fantastic information, very well said...and I will forever remember this moment because in my interviews I was that cold, statistical robot spewing fact without personalization. Thank you, again great information!
glad to help you, Morgan. best of luck to you
UGH! I hate this question! Thanks for giving me useful tip on how to answer it in my upcoming interviews this week!
I like what I heard, you are a great leader and I want to follow your strategies to get hired to the job I already applied if I am called for the interview. I know now how to be prepared for the interview.
Thanks!
Don provides excellent advice about the career interview process.
many thanks
I had an interview 2 days ago. Two Interviewers, both about 20 yrs old, and both primarily interested in wanting me to tell personal, not work things about myself. I think it's more about finding followers and social clique fit.
they sound very inexperienced.
Thank you sir! Very nice method to answer 'Tell me about yourself' 👍
It's also worth noting that there's a video camera rate on your smartphone and you can start using it right now
Self introduction should be as short and concise as possible. Dont waste time talking about your personal life. Employers look for how you can add value to the company and not how exciting your life journey is
connecting your personal journey to your occupation does work well because it shows consistency.
That is what is wrong with society. We only look at an employee as what they can do for the company. We are human beings with complex social structures. If we remain sterile in our professional interactions, including interviews, it makes a culture where people wont want to stay at that company.
Rob Johnson its not society. Its corporate leaders. Thats why corporations are evil.
Hi Don, thank you for sharing this insight.
Stay safe and take care during this difficult situation.
So glad to help you
This video deserves much more views!!
Deserve? Ever heard of the market economy concept?
Of course, the interview panel might have gone through about background information like name and nationality, and city/country where we reside, etc. I would like further know that can we start our introduction by telling our name and Nationality or country we reside, please advise thank you.
Thank you soo much!!! You're a lifesaver
many thanks
I love your videos! Thanks for all your help! I would like to see videos for foreign graduates coming to the US, how they can achieve good jobs opportunities
Sure thing!
I have an interview today, cramming for it right now, wish me luck!
Good luck
Don Georgevich I got the job, thanks so much for the advice!
I will work on this question.
just curious, how come I finish my answer in 30/45 sec by starting talking about sth I did in high school??
yanan chen The reality is the answer is about 2 mins long.
However, I believe interviewing over the phone was an asset, not a hinderance, because it forced him to focus on what's most important - and it also led to a more diverse collection of personalities in the workplace.
very helpful video, simple and clear, thank you!
glad to be here for you.
