Without your video I doubt I would have attempted this, I did, and it went smooth as silk and saved myself £££. Best tip was it could be done without axle stands by just rolling the engine over a couple of times. tyvm
Job done. Thank you for making it so easy. Followed your instructions to the letter and completed without issue. Really appreciate your time and effort in helping us fellow fL2 owners save £s 😃
Thanks for the video, always helpful to watch somebody else fumble with the fittings and all first. Helpful hint: you can cycle the new fluid through the system by jacking the front wheels a hair off the ground, unlocking the steering, and then cycling the steering wheel back and forth between the stops... goes quickly but not scary quick like running the motor! It would work without jacking too, just have to really put you weight into it, and you wouldn't need to go to gym later on.
Did your method and it worked a treat. I used a motorbike ear plug to block the feed line of the old reservoir and prevent it leaking. It cured the humming noise when I turned the wheel. Thank you
after watchin vid months ago, finally got round to doing mine! my steering had gone slightly stiff and fluid was dark brown muck colour, not healthy looking at all! the cover on my new reservoir wasn't a clip on! so used a tie wrap to hold in place while pushing new fluid through, a nice lovely clear green! when I say clear I mean all fluid, no old, no contaminates. now steering is so light again. this has been the easiest job I've done on fl2 cheers for vids, look forward to the next episode
Thank you for your video. I recently got my RR sport serviced and complained about heavy steering but nothing that much. Just did your process and it worked. Steering is much lighter. Loved the method of flushing the old fluid out. Thanks! My reservoir didnt have the clips like yours, just the usual pipe clamps. I also noticed the ACE reservoir was the same on mine so topped that up too. Thanks again
Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video, clearly explained and filmed. I need to do this on my FL2 and your video has filled me with confidence!
Scott just did it the same way this morning better than lifting the front wheels as long as you are quick on the off button lol went well though old fluid black ass so the new stuff I put in is green anyway job well done hardest bit is getting the hoses off
I'm having major issues with a new pressure feed power steering pipe continuously blowing off every time I switch the engine on to bleed the system. Do these have a pressure relief valve as I'm thinking it may be that
Many thanks, very helpful. Did you cut the filter open or were you able to make any objective assessment as to the state of the filter, amount of debris, etc in the system? I'd prefer to not replace the ps reservoir/bottle and go for a process of extracting old fluid and topping up with new over a period of days e.g. Day 1 extract from reservoir/fill Day 2 extract from reservoir/fill Day 3 etc. etc. and make an assessment as to when most has been replaced. Do you think this will work? Many thanks.
I would just change the reservoir. Easy to do and not that expensive. The filter is fairly hidden and fixed into the bottle so you can’t clean or replace it, just fit a new bottle for peace of mind.
as the filter is on the return it will be dirty and stay dirty and for the price £16:30 from amazon, Huhebne For Freelander 2 Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Tank Bottle LR000578 why not change it a no brainer surely
I have a 57 plate freelander 2 with a god awful whining noise which apparently can be solved by doing this. On the Halfords website it says the fluid shown here isn’t suitable? Is there a different fluid I should use for an older model?
@@BeavisPits Right, I'd have thought a lot more with the flushing. It's a job i need to tackle, the fluid is an awful colour in ours. Thanks for the reply.
You may be right, I’ll check the bottle. Definitely no more than 1L as I only bought one bottle of fluid. I was just changing the reservoir. A full flush or fill from empty may use more. Check the haynes manual for details.
Hello I see that this video is 4 years old, so I don't know if you'll be monitoring comments. But if you are I wonder if you could advise me. My steering had become very very heavy when trying to manoeuvre when parking. And today it was heavy when turning when moving. I have no mechanical expertise and someone said I need to get the pump changed. But would you say it's best to try getting the reservoir changed first to see if that sorts it? Thanks in advance if you are able to answer.
Check the belt first, it maybe snapped or slipping. If the pump pulley is turning but your steering is still heavy then the filter could be blocked or the fluid may be low. Follow the procedure in this video to replace the reservoir and refresh the fluid. That should help, if not then look at the pump and finally the steering rack.
Tyres are 245/70R17 on standard XS alloys sprayed black. I have also fitted 25mm wheel spacers to push the wheels out slightly further. I’m not sure if the tyres would rub on the shock absorber tube without these, not tried it. It is pretty close, even on standard tyres.
My Freelander started making a whirring noise today, it appears your technique should sort it, a question, you didn’t use power steering fluid, is the one you use the recommended one?
Hi. Did you use a genuine reservoir? And if it was an aftermarket, did the quality look ok? I imagine there's not much to them but the filter is important, thanks for your vids, 👍👍
Genuine LR part, beware of cheaper aftermarket parts. Especially with items like the fuel filter. I have heard many horror stories of non-genuine parts failing early or even being faulty from new.

Thanks Rick, great tip about jacking up the front. I tried it with engine off and wheels on the ground and could hardly move the steering wheel.

I'm late to the party here but fuck me... when you started the engine and that bottle just emptied I was CRYYINNG with laughter 😂
Many thanks. Followed your advice. Worked well. The fixing for the return pipe back to the reservoir was good to know.

Sounds like there is a blockage inside the rack. The fluid should circulate freely when idling and not steering.
Ciao e complimenti per il tuo video, mi potresti indicare quale olio utilizzare, grazie ancora.
Hi, thanks for sharing this video. What's the volume of PAS fluid? Thanks in advance.
I used 750ml

Use the fluid in my video, as per Haynes manual. Central Hydraulic Fluid, not PAS fluid. Suitable for all FL2s. Ignore the halfords flipchart.

Is there any softness in the steering wheel?
The steering definitely feels smoother with the new reservoir and fluid

The fluid is Halfords Central Hydraulic Fluid, not Power Steering Fluid. This is because LR recommend “CHF202” spec.

@@BeavisPits How many liters do I need to buy? Also can you put a link for the new power steering reservoir/bottle ? Sorry again.
I think at cold engine level should be at minimum not at max.
That is for coolant. PAS fluid is an oil so doesn’t expand much with heat. Also hot engine doesn’t cause a hot steering rack.
Plus it actually says "cold" on the power steering fluid reservoir
