    French dominance in Africa is in jeopardy, China and Russia are sidling up to countries in need of greater protection against jihadist terrorism and a healthy, non-predatory economic and trade relationship. Resentment in the region towards France continues to grow and the chances of that country salvaging its reputation in its former colonies is increasingly unlikely.
    Faced with a failed counter-terrorism strategy and unequal economic relations based on extractive regimes rooted in the era of colonialism, France has already been forced to withdraw from Mali and now from Burkina Faso. A domino effect seems to be setting in the region, which is fed up with not being able to manage its own monetary policy and with jihadism continuing to advance unchecked.
    To what extent is French dominance in Africa crumbling? What can France do to remain strong in the region? Why would it be important for it to maintain its presence? What are Russia's interests? And what is its relevance to the war in Ukraine? In this video we tell you about it.

    😔Good morning everyone. In this video, we made two mistakes in the recording that we are correcting:
    On the one hand, we fleetingly say that Mozambique was a French colony, which is a mistake. It was a Portuguese colony.
    We also talk about Mali's oil instead of gold. We are making the modifications so that this does not appear anymore. We regret the error

      Not so fast! Your storytelling reflected the limitations of the genre. You clearly based your presentation on talking points pushed by France and the United States and doing so didn't take into account the point of view from French speaking countries and Mali specifically. One has to be of bad faith to believe that a few hundreds of Wagner operatives could solve the issues plaguing Mali and other countries.

    Ooh and a mini correction for the visual politik team. The Malian government requested air support and intelligence capability assistance from the French in 2012 but never asked the French to send a man or put a boot on the ground. The French government actually demanded the Malian government rewrite its letter of help and mention the presence of French soldiers. So they actually wanted to fight on their own without ground support, but it seems the French wanted a way to get back into the country for some reason.

      @@legatilegions8055 first of all, saying "LOL" to à country forcing another sovereign country to accept its soldiers is at the very least concerning . Secondly the Malian government asked the French government to sit at the table with them and renegotiate the military cooperation agreements they had signed because they deemed those insulting ( France had the right to bring in any equipment without notifying the Malian government on what it was and it’s purpose, they could forbid the Malian military from going in certain areas of the country like they did when they block Mali from accessing its own city of kidal in the north and the region became a safe haven for terrorists). The French refused. It is only then that they warned that refusal to renegotiate would mean a direct exit. They still refused and so they were kicked out.

A local news networks called"vox Africa " did send reporters and investigators on the ground and their findings dismiss the possibility of a civilian massacre. ) and it wouldn’t be surprising that it’s just French propaganda, they’ve done it many times it wouldn’t be new. What’s more France committed multiple verified war crimes and didn’t even acknowledge it , not to mention pay for it. There was the bombing of a civilian marriage that killed some 19 civilians in Bounti on January 3rd 2021. This accusation was investigated on and supported by the UN . And still the French refused to acknowledge their blunder and have not paid compensations till now. There have been several such incidents since the start of the operation. If the French tell you they did no civilian casualties it isn’t because they did no civilian casualties, it’s because to them they are always right every body they kill is a terrorist whether holding a gun or not , whether a child , woman or old person it’s a terrorist.

    And one last thing, it's quite easy for Brits to say "at least WE developed our colonies"... To this cheap claim (and I'm not even French), I reply: First: British Africa was fully conquered almost TWENTY years before French Africa was, so it's quite normal there was more infrastructures built, specially if we considere France was still conquering it'S part of Africa just prior to WWI! After WWI both Britain and France were bankrupted but in British Africa, infrastuctures were already built! Second: British share of Africa was far richer (the Nile valley, the gold of Ghana, the gold and diamond of South Africa, and most of the land being arable not desert) than French share making it quite easy to finance infrastructures. Above all, a bad video that will make me take with a grain of salt all what this channele ever said or will say (if I still subscribe).

    • @davidford3115
      @davidford3115 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point they are making is that early on the Brits did develop their colonies while the French dithered. Yes, you can say that the Brits had a head start, but that misses the point they were making in that you have to consider the respective timelines of the colonizing power. Compare 20 to 30 years into the endeavor as a side-by-side comparison and the difference is stark.

    • @M-J-qn8td
      @M-J-qn8td ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidford3115 Take into account that WWI bankrupted both countries and the difference is way less stark even without a 20 years difference! @@davidford3115 Discovery TIMELINE, do you know what that means? If we follow your "logic", we should should blame the Brits for not having started exploiting the North Sea oil before the Middle East!
      Gold is exploited since only 20-30 years in Mali and Burkina Faso (way after independence and mostly by Canadian companies), oil was discovered only in the end of the 50's in Gabon and later in the rest of Central Africa, so maybe the French didn't do good prospection jobs in their colonies, but my point remains 100% true since you have first to discover resources before securing loans to build infrastructure!!! And BTW, why British Somalia was less developed than Italian Somalia? Because Brits were only interested in the sea ports to watch the exit of the Red sea while the Italians having less colonies had no choice developing the few colonies they had! Other example, why the Brits barely touched Sudan (which is VERY rich in minerals) and almost didn't touch at all the actual region of South Sudan while they ruled the whole region? Because they could get all those resources in the rest of their Empire for much cheaper!!!!! To conclude, your point just like the assumptions of Yellow teeth guy are just plain chauvinistic BS from comparison Orange with Apple.

    Let’s not just skip over the belt and road initiative to say that it’s only a positive effect for African countries. They have to pay huge interest rates, which they often can’t, making the lending predatory and just the same as economic colonialism that France imparted.
    I get you guys know your stuff, so a simple sentence would do wonders in portraying the belt and road more honestly. China (a brutal communist regime) isn’t doing humanitarian work for nothing.

      Debt traps is fake meme, westerners use against China in Africa. You think Africans are so dumb not to see the difference. China wants natural resources and markets access all these can be managed through better agreements. But China infrastructural development as helped alot. Most of Africa debt is not even to China and almost nothing to show for western borrowed money.

    • @sinalydembele4245
      @sinalydembele4245 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whatever westerners say about the negative effects of the Chinese BRI or debt is a lie. Chinese debt is a billion times better than any help froma colonial power such as Britain or France or from the IMF and World Bank. Westerners have been lying for decades. Since they have control over communication, they could get away with it. Now, no sane person believes in the Western propaganda against China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc. The West has been here in Africa for centuries. It is hard to see any real achievement benefitting Africans. Meeting the West was a complete disaster to Africa. Now, any western official who visits Africa is likely to land on an airport built by China. He is likely to drive to his hotel on a road built by China. His hotel was likely buit by China and the road to his host (be it the President or any other government official) was likely built by China. The conference room where he will lecture his African host was likely buitl by China.
      Yet, when western officials arrive, they lecture their African host and ask him not to deal with China and Russia. They want to host to remain their slave as it has always been for centuries. Yet, their presence has been a collection of disaster and nuissance for all these centuries. It is time for the West to let Africa be.

      BRI is overwhelmingly positive for Africa because its solely responsible for spurring growth in Africa which is what the west despises.

Whenever you have to start a war with Taiwan and conquer some neighbours in the South Chinese Sea, because you will have crushed your economy with maoistic ideology by the end of 2025 and you want to continue to stay in power of your country, you need a reliable and powerful gas-station. And a determined gas-station attendant. This is the reason, why China is literally forced to save Russia from being defeated by NATO weaponary in Ukraine. Hence, Xi has no other choice but to supply weapons to Russia sooner or later. When (not if) this is going to happen, Ukraine will be doomed within weeks and eastern Europe too. I mean, France wasn't doing anything different. It was extracting resources from the country in exchange for security help to the central government. But it created more problems than it solved. If Prigozhin can do a better job, it seems a pretty fair trade.

    If you go in and read the research, Russian military performance in Africa tends to be very poor. They do not understand the theatre or the locals. Their resources are limited. In Mali, the Wagner soldiers stick close to their bases and do short patrols mostly. And they terrorize the locals. Russian investment in Africa is also non-existent. The big thing that was going for them were the arms exports, but for the foreseeable future, Russian arms industry is going to focus on Russia. Then there is the hearts and minds aspect. With Russianatrocities and land grabs and taking over local resources, its very easy for France to make a good narrative about the Russians. And this has taken on well. Its not making France beloved, but its sure making France seem like a better choice than Russia. Using Wagner as their tool also means Russia cannot give these regimes political and diplomatic weight either. Russia has in many ways reached into the old colonial playbook: they are giving life insurance to regimes hated by the local population and in exchange they are taking over local resources. It is a losing strategy. If you really were Africa watchers, you would look at Nigeria, Angola and Congo as the big future partners to watch, and in these places France is doing very well.

    This video is full of inaccuracies and severely lacking nuance of interpretation.
    It is true that France had some dirty moments in Africa but saying that it is still acting on an imperialist agenda today is playing the Russian/Chinese propaganda. I will give you just an example : None of the companies extracting gold (not Oil) in Mali are French but they are Canadian, English and South African. It has no serious market for any French companies and so there was no financial reason to send troops there.
    Uranium extraction is the only mineral industry that French companies get involved in around the Sahel, because they are actually among the leading companies in this very specialized field.
    Now, is the USA imperialist for having 35 000 soldiers in Germany or is it just far more complex than that ? Let's get something deeper than former colonist = bad .
