It's always the Nuclear Option that opposing nations strive for in order to remain in power and not be overthrown, making sure that conquering or destroying them would be as costly as possible to the point of an Invasion not being a viable option.- if there were no nukes to begin with, the whole geopolitical scenery would be so much different.

The nuclear control treaties are no different than the Washington Naval treaty attempting to limit the number of battleships. And the Washington Naval treaty failed spectacularly in attempting to prevent WW2.

    • @TK199999

@@davidford3115 Yeah but the Washington Naval Treaty did work. Its just that Battleships after Doolittle sank that WWI German battleship in 1921. Showed Battleships were no longer strategic weapons, air and aircraft carriers were. The only way to compare battleships and nuclear weapons is again have nukes replaced by something more effective and with wider uses than nuclear weapons. So until I guess plasma, anti-matter or space based strategic direct energy/rail gun weapons are fielded nukes are still king.

    • @davidford3115

@@TK199999 If it worked so well, why did almost every power except the US blatantly violate it?
In particular, both the Germans and the Japanese created Heavy cruisers (Admiral Hipper, and Mogami respectively) with light cruiser guns that could be easily retrofitted with bigger ones so as to get around the limits?
Then you have the fact that the Japanese absolutely lied about the true displacement of their capital ships. In particular, the true displacement of their battleships was 50% greater than what they claimed.
Also, it wasn't Dolittle, it was Billy Mitchell who demonstrated the feasibility of air power over capital ships. Dolittle was the Lt. Colonel who led the Tokyo Raid from the deck of the USS Hornet.
Don't try lecturing me on military history when you can't even get your basic facts correct.

Precision Guided Munitions (PGMs) are replacing nukes. They deliver more destruction on the target and cause less collateral damage. Cost less too. No new nukes have been added to the US arsenal this century (just replacements). The peak stockpile for the US was 31,255 warheads (1967) and their current stockpile is 3,750 (2021). Around 1650 warheads are capable of long distance delivery (i.e. strategic). Nukes are slowly going out of fashion as PGMs improve.
Not sure but I think this is also true in Russia, maybe their last new nuke was made by the USSR. Russia has certainly manufactured new missiles to deliver whatever warheads they have. They are trying to decommission nukes, not add new ones, same as the US.

Correct. And that's my understanding. Without making any grandiose statement, that's fair. The problem is that deterrence worked for 70 years because rational actors understand the stakes. I don't think these people in the Kremlin understand what that means. There is an apparent arrogance from the Duma parliament that they can blast Europe, and nothing will ever happen to them. They would be wiped out in hours for fear of retaliation. At least 400 millions will lose their lives in the process. Sensible, rational people would try to de-escalate but not them. The U.S. has a worldwide sonar body system and Russian subs are tracked easily enough. The Russian bombers wouldn't stand a chance.
