Webster meddled on behalf of Malarkey to spare him leading the patrol on that last mission. Johnny Martin was chosen to replace Malarkey, that's why Martin was annoyed at Webster and glared at him. Nobody wanted to be on that patrol.

Major Winters’ character continuing to demonstrate what made him an outstanding leader. Risking court martial to keep any more men from dying senselessly.

Webster didn’t actually go on this patrol. He was operating one of the guns that covered the easy men as they came back across the river. Liebgot was the translator that went with them on the patrol, but since this episode uses Webster return to easy as the framing device for this episode, they swapped the roles of the two men.

Hi guys! On Dale Dye, the actor playing Col. Sink. You said he's like an NPC in a video game. In fact, he is instrumental to making the Band of Brothers video game and the Medal of Honor video game. Dye is actually also the Military Consultant for this series. You see, Dale Dye is Capt. Dale Dye of the US Marine Corps. Entered the Marines in the 60s as an enlisted man, and left a Captain with a chest full of medals. He actually ran a training camp where the actors in "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" spent several weeks so they could familiarize themselves with military life, tactics, and weapons.

    • @dirus3142

Dale Dye ran a boot camp for Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, Forest Whitaker, and others for Platoon. He also played the captain in command of the company.

Ah yes, Webster is my favorite, he could have used his families wealth to get a cushy rear echelon job, and he scolded his mother for suggesting such a thing, but he chose to enlist as a private on the front lines because he wanted to write an account the war from a private point of view

    • @Jonathan-om1wq

He also declined promotion to Sergeant multiple times. The officers wanted to make him a squad leader, but he kept refusing. A really interesting man.

And because he felt he was doing his duty that way, he also felt it was his right to avoid any extra risk whenever possible. In that elite group, that got him a reputation as lazy. Which is kind of hilarious.

Webster was a gifted writer and his journals and diaries from during the war were a major resource for Stephen Ambrose when he wrote the book Band Of Brothers on which the series is based. His "voice" is much more prominent in the book than in the series, in fact.

While this is a slower episode, the deaths are almost more tragic in a way. These men can see the light at the end of the tunnel that is this war, and it's given them hope that they'll survive till the end, which is exactly the opposite of how Speirs told Blithe to look at a soldiers situation to be able to properly function as a soldier. The hope, the feeling of being able to let go of that soldier's mindset, is what is causing some to break down at the "finish line." It's why they're all the more devastated at the death of Jackson here. Not only did their friend die, but he died in such an almost meaningless way when they all know how close they are to surviving it. Every new death is an insult to a multitude of injuries at this point.

6:00 I believe that sgt Martin is pissed off with Webster, because it was Webster who suggested that lt Jones should replace Malarkey as leader of the patrol. But, as Jones doesn't have the combat experience yet, now Martin was picked as leading NCO.

    • @antoniocampos6627
      @antoniocampos6627 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah and I think he has good intentions too. He knew the company was mad because he stayed in the hospital for so long so the best way in his mind to make it up to them was to volunteer in their place. It’s obvious the men were done and tired of fighting. Of course it’s sometimes impossible to see your consequences of your actions and in this case if of course led to J Martin being in the patrol.

Hi guys! i thought i should explain something on this episode with Webster. Most of the guys liked Webster, but they thought of him as a sort of a slacker. Almost all the original members of Easy had been promoted to Corporal at least. Webster still remained a Private. The treatment he received in this episode was because he was not at Bastogne. He had been previously wounded in the fighting in Holland and was in the hospital. And he stayed there until he was fully healed, while the other guys like Guarnere went AWOL to rejoin Easy. AWOL= Absence With Out Leave. Guarnere left the hospital (escaped!) before he was properly discharged. It's because the Rules and Regulations of the US Army then stated that an injured person should remain in the hospital until a Doctor says they could be discharged. However, medically discharged personnel are all placed into a pool and assigned to units on an "As Needed" basis. Meaning that there is a very big chance that you would not end up with your original unit and men you trained and went to combat with. So soldiers would go AWOL once they thought they were better so they could join their old units. The fact that he waited to be discharged while the unit was trapped in Bastogne was a big turn off for most of the old guys in the unit. His joining the patrol was his way of rejoining the unit in spirit.

Sgt. Martin was pissed at Webster because he had made sure that Malarkey wasn’t leading the patrol. This left a vacant position on the assault team, which Sgt. Martin then had to occupy, thus placing himself in danger which he otherwise would have avoided if not for Webster.

Won't comment any further until you have seen episode #9.

  • @Zenon0K

The reason that Martin is so steamed at Webster is because since he got Malarkey off the hook, and got Jones onto the patrol, they needed another ranking officer (Martin) to now risk leading the patrol. That's why he picks Webster for the strike team and lets Leibgot go, as a little "ask and you'll receive, don't open your mouth dummy" kind of dig.

David Webster survived the war and would later become a successful writer. He wrote a book called "Parachute Infantry" which inspired Stephen Ambrose to write and research "Band of Brothers" which would later be made into the Mini series we have today and the reason why he has as an entire episode dedicated to him. You can say hes the man who started the mini series... in a way.

Martin was pissed off at Webster because he wasn't on the patrol until Web opened his mouth about Malarkie. How would you feel if someone convinced your boss to send you instead of someone else on a mission that was likely to get you killed? You'd probably be pissed off at the guy who may have just signed your death warrant.

My first time watching it was around 2003. I couldn't stop watching it. Was absolutely glued to the TV. I kept thinking at the time that it was basically Saving Private Ryan but on steroids and based on a true story vs. SPR's 15 mins of depicting real events while the rest was based on fiction. The only emotions I really had when I first watched BOB was astonishment and awe.
Then came episode 9: Why We Fight. I absolutely broke down when I first saw it and do each and every time I've seen it since. If episode 9 doesn't bring tears to the eyes of those watching it, then there is something very, VERY wrong with them.

The Malarkey/Martin conundrum shows theirs no such thing as a good deed in the military. Pull Unit A from patrol, Unit B has to go. Unit A doesn't have patrol, so now they have gate duty. Give Sgt Smith a break, Sgt Bob has to take his place. The one luxury US troops have is the right to complain and they do so constantly, vigorously and encyclopedically. Unless your in your rack or on leave, it's all BS.
