The decision to reveal the names of the men in the interviews only at the end of the final episode is pure genius. Still tears me up even after watching the show more than twenty times already.
Agreed. Most were impossible to know but Wild Bill was so obviously him you knew he'd survive 😂

I'm a flight attendant. About 2 years after this series premiered, I had the honor of having Shifty Powers and his wife on my flight. He was such a humble and gracious man. It is absolutely the highlight of my 36 year career. Well done gentlemen.
Thanks for relating that anecdote. Even though Shifty had a relatively small part in the series, it seemed to me clearly (through both Shifty's interviews and from the actor who played him) that he was a gentle, thoughtful soul.
"Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" "No. But I served in a company of heroes." What an incredible emotional gut punch (in the best way) every single time I see it.
And part of what makes it so powerful is that even stoic Winters has difficulty in keeping his composure while relating it.
Tear up every time I hear it.
One of my favorite details in the band of brothers book, is that David Webster complained about how low the quality of the liquor in the basement was, for someone as rich as who owned the cellar, but Webster didn't know that Nixon had already boxed up and taken all the best stuff
The Colonel that surrendered to Winters was NOT an SS officer. He was Wehrmacht. Note that he didn't have the skull and crossbones emblem on his cover and he had epaulettes and no collar pips.
Yea and many in the army tried to stop the crimes as best as they could when they could was watching a movie the other day that was said to be a true story of the army not letting a train full of Jewish people to leave the station they were at and standing up to the SS
Strictly speaking he was an officer in the Heer (army). Wehrmacht means armed forces and includes the air force and the navy. But yes, the SS weren't part of the Wehrmacht, they were a separate military wing of the Nazi party. Not all Germans were Nazis and indeed, not all SS were Germans. Pretty much every occupied country raised it's own SS Division. Neutral countries like Spain and Sweden had SS Volunteer divisions and there was even a small British unit and an Indian one.
@@wolf99000 Incorrect, the Wehrmacht showed full and stunning acceptance to know these crimes were going on but to also assist in them. For example; The 9th Army in the Eastern Front were found to of committed scorched earth tactics by torturing civilian, pillaging towns, and many other acts. That is one of many many actions of the Heer in Eastern Europe that qualify as a "Crime Against Humanity" which is same as the SS did. Once you educate yourself in the "Clean Wehrmacht Myth" then you will understand that the Heer or other pieces of the Wehrmacht are not to be excused or seen as innocent.

@@DanteRU0312 **BIG** difference: The SS were originally Hitler's personal bodyguards, who fully supported to execution of the jews, The Wehrmacht was mostly made up of conscripts, no prior combat experience whatsoever, and I believe that some of the Wehrmacht soldiers died or made it through the war without killing a single American, British, Canadian or Soviet soldier
You should check out the documentary “We Stand Alone Together”, the extended interviews with the veterans of Easy. And then watch The Pacific (make sure you watch the version with the interviews and Tom Hanks narration at the start of each episode).
Band of Brothers and The Pacific are equally good, in different ways. They explore different aspects of war, and use different story telling methods, it overall, they’re both excellent.
Master of the Air, the story of the 8th Bomber Wing based in England is the next series that will come out soon.
I agree that the documentary is a must-watch for anyone who was moved by this series, which the boys clearly were.
Note: The soldier that shot Grant was not exactly an exemplary soldier. When E Company found him he was assaulting a young Austrian woman and had even apparently shot another C.O that was British and 2 German P.O.W's. The Colonel in charge of the 101st Colonel Sink even went on record saying if Spiers HAD shot the man. He would've helped cover for him, and the NCOs of Easy also really had no desire to stop or turn Spiers in to the MPs if he had shot the private. Shows just how well respected Spiers was to the soldiers.
The actor did such a good job making him unlikable that if I saw him in real life I would probably want to punch him.

@@JoeMama410 the real guy confirmed the rumours that during the war he was an alcoholic and did in fact kill the German prisoners (ostensibly war crimes). He confirmed when Major Winters called him to ask if it was ok to put it in the book because his publishers were terrified Spiers would sue for defemation
@@bobslobbins2864 Speirs didn't really have a choice; he didn't want to execute the prisoners, but they didn't have the logistics to handle POW's when he captured them on D-Day. It wasn't like it was shown in the show.
@@Jonathan-om1wq Yeah they had just landed etc, how the hell do you take care of prisoners when you got the whole german army on your neck, sure later on when they established it would be easier!
6:45 Hes not an SS officer, very easy to recognise by his collar. These 2 bars are insignia of the Wehrmacht and they come in many variations - the ones hes wearing tell that hes part of the Generals Staff and that hes an engenier.
@GamerKat'71 It is worth noting that the Wehrmacht was created by the Nazi Party, was compelled to recite an oath of allegiance to Hitler personally, and was functionally answerable to and a tool of the Nazi Party. I would caution against the idea the German officers who were in the Wehrmacht were not complicit or did not participate in the numerous war crimes of the Nazi regime. A lot of the ideas surrounding the "Clean Wehrmacht" myth circulated in post-war Germany, where the US military and scholars accepted the written accounts of German officers uncritically, and the myth of innocent Wehrmacht officers who were "not Nazis" and "just fought for their country" is one that is receiving considerable pushback in Germany today.

@GamerKat'71 I find on the internet it's about 50/50 whether or not the follow up to this kind of post is peddling the Myth of the Clean Wehrmacht, which is also sadly prevalent in part due to a lack of emphasis on teaching history in schools...although North American schools in general don't spend much time on European history (or other continents for that matter)
@@praetorxian Wehrmacht did plenty of war crimes as well, it's unfortunately a slippery slope between saying this and being full on peddler of myth of the clean wehrmacht when it comes to the internet.

The general suggestion after This show is The Pacific, and I agree on that, however I would also like to draw attention to another history hbo miniseries that nobody has ever reacted to and that I think is Highly underrated, while Steven Spielberg was not involved in it Tom Hanks Produced it, it's called John Adam's. It's in my opinion the best thing filmed about the time period of the revolutionary war

@@DeltaAssaultGaming Whatever; the Pacific is every bit as good as Band of Brothers ever was. There is no finer film/series out there that portrayed the Pacific theatre of war as HBO's The Pacific did. No, it was done differently than Band of Brothers as the war in Europe was a completely different war than the war in the Pacific Theatre.
The German commanding officer to his troops makes me emotional too, it is the exact same feeling that US troops had and have for each other. The relationships you forge while serving with others is nothing like I've felt any where else.
That officer was not SS, he was Wehrmacht. Just a normal soldier like winters.
Kudos to Stephen Ambrose, who was doing some early research for a book on D-Day and went to an Easy Company reunion in 1988 and realized that there was probably a separate book in their stories -- and also realized that those fellows might not be around much longer to tell about what they saw and experienced.

There's great war films out there, saving private ryan, platoon, full metal jacket etc but when asked what to watch I will always suggest this show above all else. A true masterpiece and probaley in my top 5 shows of all time
For my part I would suggest Das Boot, The Downfall, Stalingrad and Land of Mine. Plattoon and FMJ are both amazing and so is BoB. SPR? Overratted.
@@tolkienismaster For me it's All Quiet on the Western Front, the original. Pretty much the only war film I can think of that actually fully succeeds in being anti-war in my opinion since it's portrayed as senseless, hopeless, and ultimately unnecessary, with brutal combat scenes that don't glorify anyone or display any real acts of heroism, just desperation and depression. Which is honest, and powerful, and sobering.
This was a great reaction all way through the 10 episodes guys, and I've really enjoyed watching your journey through the series. You said about people having watched it many times and becoming accustomed to it, but I think that I speak for many of us who have watched it multiple times or even just through following channels like yours doing reactions, that all the bits that get to you the first time, still get to you after many viewings. It is that powerful.
"I served in the company of heroes" gets me every goddamned time.
A Bridge too Far" is a classic film with the biggest stars of the day portraying the story of Operation: Market Garden. James Caan, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman, Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford and more, make it a great film if you are interested in more WWII films. If not, I recommend "A Few Good Men". Jack Nicholson's performance is not to be missed
Band of Brothers is a MASTERPIECE.
I just noticed that Speirs was holding Grant's hand when the doctor was looking at him. Even an officer as tough, brave, and stern as him (at least that's how the show portrayed him), he cared for his men.
SS have the skull on bones on their hat. Winters saluted the col. because he was regular German military.
I re-watch this show every year. I watch most of the reactors who react to it and it never looses it ability to fill me with every emotion there is. Reading stories from WWII and being in awe of those who fought is one of the reasons I joined the Marine Corps. I felt like I owed it to them to serve.

That Colonel that surrended was not SS but Regular army, same with the General that adresses his men. Regular army which mean that they might not have actually taken part in War Crimes. :)
I have watched this series about 6 times and about 3 or 4 more times through channels like these, watching others react to it. It NEVER stops getting me. Incredible.
Jeez, this series is 20 years old. Where is the time? Indeed a masterpiece and still no dating what so ever. In fact, it is timeless. This series will live on and watched for centuries to come.

You are the very first reactors who have included the whole of Major Winters comments about Mike Ranney's letter; watched this series a couple of dozen times in the last twenty years, probably more, and that moment always gets me teared up. My Dad was in the Navy and saw action in the Korean War. He remained close friends with his buddies until he died at 87. Over 60 years of close friendship

If you want to see what happened to some of these men after the war, try the documentary “He has seen war”. It features veterans of BoB and The Pacific. Although if you are planning to watch The Pacific, maybe wait until you have to avoid any spoilers. BoB is my favourite of the two personally. Mainly because for me it had more heart to it, in the sense you become more invested in the characters. I personally found The Pacific more difficult to engage with individual characters but that is because they don’t just follow one company. BoB is my favourite series of all time so I would give it a full 10/10.

It's a very good documentary, and I was particularly impressed with the opening narration, which seems to have been made in the period... that it seemed very aware of the problems of PTSD and the difficulty of returning to civilian life after war.
great effort guys over all 10 episodes ........ your 2 seconds of silence after the final comments, not breathing, hand clutching your heart, said everything about how good the series is and how much you had bought into it

This whole episode and the emotion brought on from the incredible lines from the vets themselves along with the beautiful shot of all the planes at the end of ep 1, will live with me always. Always
The Pacific is pretty accurate, of course there will be some mistakes as there is in anything Hollywood touches. Much of it is based on two books written by Marines that were there. One from Robert Leckie, his book was Helmet For My Pillow, and the other by Eugene Sledge. I just bought the book by Sledge and have just started reading it, it's called With The Old Breed.
See, that feeling you got is what we all felt all those years ago, it is just a magnificent show. there's nothing else to say about it, perfection.

It may be a bit hard for you two, as you review and compare the two series, to not be a bit biased to BOB.
The British were focused on defeating the Nazi’s and rightly so. America, because the Japanese ( not the Nazi’s) bombed Pearl Harbor, we were hell bent on getting revenge against the Japanese Empire. The Allied leaders of the time decided the best approach was to defeat Hitler first, then focus on Japan. The British Empire, even though it had lost Singapore to the Japanese was more concerned with defeating Hitler because he was more of an immediate threat than Japan.
Love this series, it gives a stark reminder to people today about how pivotal WW2 was in such an unapologetic tone. The only mini series the bests this one imo is Chernobyl which u guys should definitely consider 👍

The surrendering colonel was from the German Wehrmacht or regular army. Not SS, and probably quite happy to be at the end of war at this point. As long as he didn’t oversee or order any atrocities against civilians or soldiers, he would be able to keep his rank and not be tried for war crimes.
Winters actually kept the pistol that the German Officer offered him. Upon inspecting it he found that it had never once been fired. It remained that way until Winters' death, and I imagine still remains like that under whoever now possesses it.

Memories of watching this first year in college, sitting on some ratty couch with friends under the stairs, my then-gf hopping in from the hallway after looking for us in the maze of cubicles of our department and asking "Which film is this?" Other than who taped it that day when it first aired, none of us had any idea. We watched it on an animation test station, a VHS hooked up to a portable Sony Trinitron monitor next to a camera, lights, and an animation disc in a dark corner. Because college. I don't think it was in color either. Not exactly THX theater quality but it didn't matter. It was story time around the camp fire. Everybody there I'd only known for maybe a few weeks to a year at most, some of us meeting for the first time that day. Which kicked off the next 4 years together as our own dumb little tribe of starving students. That only adds to how deeply rooted this series is in my mind. LOTR was soon to follow.
You need to close this out by watching the Band of Brothers documentary "We Stand Alone Together" - lots of interviews with the real men. BTW, I give BoB a 10/10.
Watched The Pacific recently. I wasn’t a fan at first but it definitely grew on me. I still rank Band of Brothers higher though. Look forward to your reaction.

The third series (which is currently being made) should be incredible too. It follows an air squadron so it should make for some fantastic story telling.

Try not to compare the the two series. It will be difficult, but they should stand on their own. You did a great job with Band of Brothers. Look forward to your take on “The Pacific”. For the most part this conflict has been overlooked.

The Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest) is now a popular restaurant, and has been for many years. The house escaped damage from the British bombing raid that destroyed most of the other buildings.
Look it up. Hitler would be furious if he knew his mountaintop retreat is now a restaurant!
I always thought "Band of Brothers" was better than "The Pacific" the first time i watched it but after i read the books by Eugene Sledge "With the Old Breed" and Robert Leckie "Helmet for my pillow" it totally blew my mind how accurate it is and depending how I feel at the time I think its better than BOB and gave me a far better understanding of what the men in the pacific theatre experienced and the descent into hell the Marines went through. People who have read the books would agree aswell.
You can't compare Band of Brothers to The Pacific or vice versa....they are stories of two completely different wars in one gigantic war....what is important is that these stories are being told so we understand the sacrifice these men and women gave for the entire world...they are the GREATEST GENERATION in my humble opinion
You're right at a point of history sake but I feel majority of the comparisons i see and read are through a film making point of view. Criticism between the 2 are usually a film making critique ( writing, script, character dev etc...) People tend to get caught up on the film making aspect instead of the true life story of these men. Reading the books made me realize that "The Pacific" is as true and incredible of a story as BOB.

I love this series and I make a point of watching it at least once per year, as a reminder of what was sacrificed for us to have the world we have today. If you have not seen it I strongly recommend you watch and review the Documentary that goes along with the Series, called We Stand Alone Together. You see the full interviews with the men and their is a lot in the Doc that did not make it into the series. It gives you even more insight into each of them.
There's a great photo of Nixon in the book that was taken the morning after VE Day and the discovery of that wine cellar. You've never seen a more hungover man in your life...
Think BoB is easily my favorite series ever. There are other series I love, or think are great. But I rewatch this basically every year, this year in a way I rewatched it through your eyes. It's one of the best there's ever been, and it's stood the test of time.
A must watch after finishing the series, is the the documentary about band of brothers, called “We Stand Alone Together” it’s a 1 hour video on youtube that gives you so much detail upon what happened, stories and everything from all the real men involved, really touches your heart which is why it’s such a good watch, also gives you real videos and photos that are just fantastic!
Life changing television. I think it's interesting that when Spiers looked like he was going to shoot the replacement that shot Sgt. Grant, the men were looking away even after all that they had seen and been through. Also, when Winters broke the news of the German surrender and then the Japanese surrender, there was no whooping or high-fiving or celebration. The men just took it in quietly for a minute before going back to what they were doing.
So glad you guys finished this series.
You will find yourselves watching it many more times.
The box set is well worth it.

Could you imagine being told in the final days in Germany as the Germans surrender you will be training for combat to be redeployed in Okinawa?

Lmao putting the pressure on, let these guys digest it a little bit. I believe you’re referring to the “We Stand Alone” Documentary that furthers the details into the stories of the men of Easy Company. A must watch no doubt, but it is long and tbh I haven’t seen a lot of people watch that. Not saying they shouldn’t but it’s not something I’d expect. Regardless, the story of these men and likewise their trooper counterparts should not be forgotten.

Band of Brothers is the greatest thing ever put on film.
The Pacific is just as good but the theme is very different. BoB is about what the title says, unit cohesion. BoB covers a different time frame. The first episode covers about 2 years. The next 9 cover just more than 1 year. All of the men we react to are in Easy Co. We get to know about a dozen of them pretty well.
The theme of The Pacific is about what the war did to these Marines. Dr. Sledge, Eugene’s father, says something pretty early on about the soldiers from the First World War. Pay attention to that. That is the theme of the Pacific. The story line follows 3,4, or 5 Marines. (Leicke, Basilone, Sledge, Phillips, and SNAFU) They aren’t all in the same unit but occasionally paths cross. I would say it is kind of like watching episode 7, The Breaking Point, over and over.
When you are done you should absolutely watch He Has Seen War. You need to see both series before you watch this. Even if you don’t do a reaction video watch it.

You should see on TH-cam the Emmy Award for the show. All the men were in an hotel watching and Major Winters spoke to the audience. Also the video of Tom Hanks talking about Major Winters after his Memorial Service. You should see The Pacific series based upon several memoirs of combat by the men shown in the series. One of these books is considered an all time book of combat.
I lent the box set of BoB to a friend. Even though he wasn't sure he was going to watch it. The next day he called me and said he had already watched 7 of the 10 episodes already. Needless to say he was raving about how good it was after that. This show is a masterpiece. Also, there was a difference between the Nazis and the German military. The soldier who offers Winters his gun was (I'm pretty sure) from the German military. The German military and the Nazis didn't like each other. In fact, German military men tried to assassinate Hitler several times.
A few recommendations:

Also, not sure if you've done this one already but One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a good one too
Although their experience are very personal, they are by no means unique. Their experience were repeated again and again all over Western Europe. The US Army produced thousands of Winters, Sobel, Guarnere and the others. They are not the only company in the war.
The Pacific is another must watch series it is 10 episodes same as band of brothers
I have watched both Band of Brothers and Pacific. I definetly did not have the same connection with the characters in the Pacific and I'm not sure why. I would rate BoB over Pacific

Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg had Richard "Dick" Winters accepting Emmy Award and speech for Best Miniseries in 2002's Emmy Awards. Everyone in the audience made a standing ovation for Winters and his men who were then surviving members of Easy Company. Emmy simulcasted his men who were in nearby hotel. They won the Emmys for their part in defeating a madman!

Fun fact no one mentions: The story of Saving Private Ryan although was fictional, was based on a story by Donald Malarkey where he says that one of his friends who is the last one alive between 3-4 brothers was discharged from service. The producers based their story from his story in Stephen Ambrose book.

I'm a Vietnam combat veteran - rifleman, 7th Cav. We had a hard time coming home partly because segments of our own society treated us badly. Then, almost every movie about it showed us as incompetent, drug addicted criminals. Not so. Even worse, it is said we lost the war. We were not allowed to fight a winning strategy because of politics. I was never in a losing battle. The only people I've been able to relate to about any of it is other vets. In that way, Band of Brothers rings true to me.

I watch this serious every Memorial Day.
The story with the colonel and his pistol is that major winters accepted the pistol and later inspected it and noticed that the pistol had never been fired "it had no blood on it" and major winters never fired it while the pistol was in his possession
Major winters said that "that's how all wars should end, with no blood"
Came here to write just that, they really should have kept it as it was and used that quote at the end for the interviews.
Winters did not let the German officer keep his pistol in real life, Winter's kept it, he realized it was brand new and never been fired. He kept it and never shot it.
If this is the only War based series or movie people watch it will be a perfect way to open their eyes and minds to the horror, complexity and human sacrifice emotionally and physically of conflict.. Hero's All
I've seen BoB several times but something about watching reactions for it is even more endlessly rewatchable to me and your series was no exception, was a great time.
I hope you guys do Generation Kill at some point, it's much less heroic and good feelings filled than BoB but I think the cynical edge it has is a wonderful counterpoint. I may like it even more than BoB.

We Americans owe a debt of gratitude to the British for holding the line, fighting Hitler in the face of your own country being bombed & innocent civilians being killed nightly for almost a year & a half before we got into the war! Thank you to all our allies.
The Pacific was good. But we are talking a differing camaraderie, different country side it was for all intents a different war in a world of its own. Where as Band of Brothers was about the camaraderie and the following of this unlikely group of strangers thrown together. The Pacific focused the individuals in question who too faced a foreign enemy quite different than the Germans in a land as foreign as one could imagine. There were no Jungles in Europe. I think we who have never lived in that part of the world relate more to not just the Band of Brothers do to their story but subconsciously to the environment they fought in making it all the more relatable.

I Recommend Reacting to "We Stand Alone Together" its the Documentary thats paired with the show but its where the beginning interviews with the men of the 101st come from
Band of Brothers is the best miniseries ever made, full stop.
Another outstanding series from Tom Hanks is "From Earth To the Moon" about the Apollo program. Would love to see you take it on.
One - of many things - that hit me watching this show, was the man talking about he maybe could have been friends with some of the young german soldiers.

The fact that he was arguably one of the greatest combat leaders of men in wartime, Richard Winters didn't think of himself as a hero is such a testament to the man he clearly was. The man won the Distinguished service cross, which is one below the f'in Medal on honor.
"It's a masterpiece." Yes it is, in my opinion.
