Great show to follow up with, I'd be interested in getting yours and others thoughts on the lack of interviews possibly affecting the show. BOB is so great because they had veterans and their families there to somewhat hold the show accountable for their depictions. I think it really helped make this show stand apart from others like The Pacific

Fact about this episode: Easy didnt really criticize Webster for his absence during bastogne. Infact they are glad and relief that he and the rest wasnt there because they dont want to see more of thier comrades die in the battlefield, Webster even wrote that in his own book. They just did that to give the show a little drama. Another great reaction from you guys...

The wounded German shouting in pain on the other side of the river was played by Tom Hanks.
Regarding Second Lieutenant Henry Jones, there was actually about a month between his joining Easy Company and his promotion to First Lieutenant and a posting at the regimental level. The reason he was sent up to regiment was that most of the soldiers in the Army were going to be released after the war (as they were draftees) and the Army wanted to retain career soldiers like Jones in staff positions. The same thing happened during the Vietnam War, where graduates of West Point and volunteers were moved into important positions so that the Army wouldn't lose cohesion when all the draftees were sent home.
Jones stayed in Germany as part of the occupation when the war ended. He unfortunately was involved in a car accident in 1947 while stationed in Berlin, and was killed. He was only 23 when he died.

Fun fact: The script actually wanted Malarkey to go on "The Last Patrol" when filming this episode. However, the real Malarkey heard about this and insisted he really hadn't gone on the patrol. Hence they changed it. XD

    Couple fun facts here:
The prisoner they left along the bank by accident, actaully took shrapnel to his lungs when that grenade was chucked in to the room. He was there for about 6 hours screaming in agony until hey decided they’d had enough of him yelling and shot him.
The voice screaming was also Ton Hanks
Also, when Eugene Jackson was hit, he was struck with shrapnel that split through his brain. Between crossing him over the river and bringing him to the basement, Jackson was yelling “shoot me! shoot me” he was in so much pain with his brain he wanted to die immediately, whereas this show portrays him as wanting to live

I remember an interview with a German soldier, who said at the end of the war, the older veterans didn't even try to learn the names of the new replacement officers they got, because "those kids had no chance making it for more than three days."
    - "How old were you then?"
    - "Twenty."

  • @hellowhat890

It's actually sad that Lt. Jones didn't live long after this.
He got injured in a jeep wreck a year after he left Easy Company in Heidelburg, Germany. Although he recovered from that accident, he later died due to complications in surgery. He died in 1947 at 23 years old.

Great reaction as always! I love this episode, one of my favourites from the series, and I love Webster and him being the narrator (the narrated episodes are the best). It's interesting to see the difference in how the men from Easy welcomed Webster at the beginning and how he was "one of them" again at the end... and the last line always gets me idk why.
One thing about Cobb... he's portrayed as really annoying, unfriendly and bitter... bullying replacements and other "green" soldiers (like Webster) and even being kinda a coward, but he was not like that, he was actually quite friendly, but iirc he really was drunk at the end of the patrol and was violent with Lt. Foley (the one who in real life leaded the patrol) so he was discharged from service.
Also, this is really a kinda unimportant detail but poor Alley, man. He was the one carrying potatoes with Bill Kiehn when Bill was killed by a mortar shell. He was also the one singing behind Mellet when the sniper shot and killed him in the previous episode (the sniper whom Shifty killed) and he was also present in this patrol and saw Jackson die... he has seen a lot of fellow soldiers die in front of him. Alley was also wounded in Normandy when he landed on broken glass and then in Holland when a grenade exploded in front of him... that's why you can see that he has scars on his face if you look carefully. He was in Bastogne too and has been with Easy since the beginning. He's like an unsung hero, because he's an incidental character in the show, but he went through so much... Malarkey looks really depressed and drained here, but Alley, geez, he has also seen and been through a lot, when Bill Kiehn and then Jackson die you almost can see PTSD on Alley's face.

5:11 You'd be surprised actually how tough they were trained. Both historically back then and also for when they filmed this series. Anger, especially when directed towards specific tasks like on a mission can in fact use that energy to direct it at their objective.
Now, a bad example, which led to a good outcome was back in Episode 2. Guarnere took the initiative and fired on the German convoy before Winters was able to signal the rest of them to shoot. He was pissed he lost his brother. Another bad example would be in Episode 5 when Winters removed Liebgott's ammo when he was tasked with escorting prisoners. Joe was known for not treating prisoners properly and his attitude when Winters called out to him was not acceptable.
I remember in basic training that the instructors yelled at us so effectively, not because they hated us, but because they wanted us to break down so we could toughen up and reshape ourselves. I recall the ones, including myself who made it to squad leader were the ones who actually showed their emotions first. Many of us cried due to the pressure, snapped back and found a little anger to stand up and be able to take the verbal abuse and training. The serious animosity that our instructors wanted us to channel wasn't because they wanted us to be pissed at them. But to give that sense of professional decorum a soldier is supposed to have if not all the time, but most of the time.

Interesting fact. In this episode it shows Cobb getting drunk and mouthing off to Webster and Lt. Jones. In real life, Cobb (and another soldier) actually did get drunk and got into an argument except it was with Lt. Foley. They tried to attack him and were court-martial-ed for it. I believe Sgt. Martin was gonna shoot Cobb for his behaviour but Lt. Foley prevented him from doing it. I never noticed from the first time I watched the show but at the very end of the episode, when they're all leaving on the trucks, you can actually see Cobb being driven away in a jeep with three MP's sitting in it. Very cool that they slip in these little details.
