This was my favorite episode because of how it showcased the vital role senior non-commissioned officers (NCOs) have in the military. They’re the leaders who can be more nonchalant and friendly with the men, but they’re also liaisons between the men and the officers. Sometimes they’re forced to make up for an officer’s shortcomings while still keeping morale up. Donnie Wahlberg was great.

  • @brianmurphy8811

"Who's this guy?" - That's Donnie Wahlberg, my dude. You might remember him from a little known musical group in the 80's and early 90's, New Kids on the Block, also brother to little known actor Mark Wahlberg (ngl, Donnie's performance in BoB is better than anything Mark's ever done).
"I doubt he did it then" - From what I read, Speirs was reluctant to first meet about Band of Brothers, because he was afraid he was going to be brought up on war crimes. Now, I don't know if it's because he read Ambrose's book and that's what they say in the book, or if it's actually true. What I will say is this, many American and Canadian units were ordered _not_ to take prisoners during D-Day and into the first few days. And there are probably several reasons for this, one of which I'd venture to guess...they had no HQ/Brig to send prisoner's too. The Airborne were scattered all over Normandy, taking prisoners at that phase is logistically impossible.

That having been said, there are plenty of movies I could tick off on Mark's career that I would say aren't the best bullet points in his resume, I'd rather re-watch Dreamcatcher, than see Transformers again, for example. But, my point is more that Donnie is _that_ good in BoB.

The surviving veterans of Easy Company who lived old enough to watch the series mostly agreed that the one thing the series got wrong was it just could not convey what kind of utter Hellish nightmare fighting the battle of Bulge really was for Easy. It was infinitely WORSE than it is portrayed in the series, and it tells something of the actual battle. Can't really even imagine it.

Dyke was presented rather unfairly here. Yes, he wasn't a great commander. But during the assault on Foy he didn't freeze up. He was shot in the shoulder and was naturally panicking over it. He also received a medal for dragging 2 wounded members of E Company to safety while under small arms fire. That personally bugged me a bit about how he was shown here.

    • @brianmurphy8811
      @brianmurphy8811 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

It is a shame how he was perceived among the men, because by all rights from what I've heard he was actually not a bad soldier. But, something about Bastogne and perhaps the pressures/expectations of Commanding Easy, caused some kind of change in him. The men's perception wouldn't be so horribly skewed for no reason, right?
And since the entire series is based upon their first hand memories, it tells me _something_ happened there. Not sure what, though. To be fair, Bastogne was also a nightmare, so it could just be the mental limits.

    • @ginjamutha

I think they could have at least shown Dike as being injured or used the end credits to say what happened to him afterwards so as viewers, we could have had a full story arc for him. However, the fact remains that he wasn’t well liked by, or had the confidence of, the men he was leading. They called him Foxhole Norman for a reason. Lipton really did go to Winters to express his concerns prior to the attack on Foy. At least that is what Donnie Wahlberg states in the recent HBO Max podcasts for the 20th Anniversary of BoB. He talks about discussing it with Lip. You don’t go to a superior officer to express doubts in your leader without good reason. I have always watched that episode with the assumption that Dike, much like Buck, Malarkey and others, had reached their “Breaking Point” in their own individual way. That was what the episode was about after all. So I personally don’t judge him harshly, I feel a lot of empathy for Dike. The strange behaviour, the yawning all the time etc. I think they made an attempt to portray that but could have done it better. Dike was suffering and struggling in his own way. I guess we would need to hear what the writer of that episode has to say about all this, but John Orloff (who wrote episodes 2 and 9) is on record as stating that it’s a shame Dike will be forever judged on what was the worst day of his life. And I tend to agree. We have to remember that BoB isn’t a documentary though and in the grand scheme of things they all did a great job in bringing this amazing true story to life.

@@brianmurphy8811 It's a difficult thing because the official records aren't so unflattering but the personal accounts by men under him during this time period are incredibly damning. From my time in the service I can say for certain that awards and decorations and the reports that go with them are NOT a good way to judge someone's ability in uniform. But I'm conflicted, too. This portrayal was never conflicted by any of Easy Company's surviving men when it was published. None of them spoke outwardly about it. But none of them defended him. And, sadly, I think that tells us a lot about his behavior during this time.

I can assure you as a veteran of 8 years and 3 combat tours; there are dozens of award citations, commendations and accolades that portray a great leader but when seen in person by their subordinates, they're a piece of shit. I can name one senior nco that we all knew he falsified reports to get a purple heart under his belt before his retirement. Not saying Dike was a piece of shit but there are plenty of military leaders that on paper seem like great leaders because it's easy to falsify reports of courageous acts.

In an interview with Dick Winters, that's out on youtube, Dick was asked about the shooting of prisoners by Spiers. The story Dick told was that he received a call from Ambrose and Ambrose told him some company lawyers (I assume that was the publisher company of the book) had raised some concerns over being sued over the details of the incident. Dick told Ambrose not to worry about it, he would handle it. Dick said he called Spiers and said, 'hey Sparky, you know those stories about what happened with you on D-Day, were they true?', and Spiers said hell yeah they were true. Dick told him about the Ambrose phone call and the concern of the lawyers, so Spiers told Dick not to worry about it. He would write them a letter and explain what happened. Apparently he did, and Dick said there was never an issue with printing the account about that. Nobody ever raised the issue again.

6:00 The sergeant Speirs shot was drunk and belligerent, not listening to Speirs' orders; and when the sergeant aimed his weapon at Speirs, Speirs shot and killed him. The incident was ruled a justified act of self-defense.
By some accounts, Dyke's fellow officers had difficulty dealing with him, so it's probably not surprising that the men of Easy Company had the same difficulty. Say what you will about Dyke's bravery, and given that what was presented about him in the episode was likely an exaggeration: had he been as respected as Winters or Moose Heyliger, or as feared as Speirs was, he would not have been nicknamed "Foxhole Norman."

I'm pretty sure around the time the book was ready to release, the publisher's legal team came to Ambrose with concerns about if the stories about Spiers were true or if they were gonna get sued for publishing something like that. Ambrose talked to Winters about it but he didn't know so Winters called Spiers and Spiers was like 'Yeah they're true, I'll write a letter saying so if you want.' So I think he probably killed the prisoners and shot the drunk soldier. I think both are things that happen from time to time when armies are invading unfamiliar territory and need to be able to move fast so I'm sure he did them for practical reasons in his mind (I mean, we firebombed Dresden too so it's not like the Allies were always about doing the by the book correct moral thing at any given point.) Then afterward he just let the stories get bigger for the reason he implied when talking to Lipton.

One of the major differences between this and the Pacific is that the Pacific was based off of the books written by 3 of the Marines involved - their direct words. Band of Brothers is based more off items written about the soldiers of Easy Co and follow up interviews. So the Pacific has much more depth concerning the main “characters” (and much less about the secondary ones)

@@1971mav I do think because it was so specific about a few individuals who weren’t in the same unit, it was a bit disjointed. I like Band of Brothers a bit better - and I am a Marine

One thing about this series that I absolutely love is the music. Michael Kamen was one of the greatest composers of all time. His music was so rousing and poignant in whatever film/television show it appeared in. May he rest in peace.

My favourite episode of this show straight off the back of another great episode as well.
I actually saw Pacific before this show and preferred it to band of brothers but going back for 2nd viewings of both band of brothers became far better of the two because I knew the characters alot better. It definatley requires a 2nd viewing an absolute masterpiece 👌

Hubler's death was moved up. In reality, he died in the same way during the Battle of Foy. Americans grew up with 1911s and Colts, and being able to hold a mag with a round in the pipe ready to go. Lugers were meant to hold the mag, that's it. They were prone to misfiring or going off especially when (like Hubler who was climbing a barbed wire fence at the time) accidental trigger pulls happen when they had a round chambered. Most guys didn't know and that was the cause of a ton of accidental shootings and deaths.

This is my favorite episode. I binge watched the show in 6th grade and remember being sad when Hoobler died, but being on the same page as Speirs when he tells the Sergeants to mortar and grenade launcher the building with the sniper. Roller coaster of an action packed episode

Donnie Wahlberg doesn't get enough credit as a fine actor. I'm not sure if it's because he is better known as a New Kid on the Block or because he lives in the acting shadow of being Mark's brother (even though, imo, he's a better actor than Mark), but he's put in a few great performances and deserves more chances and bigger roles.

I have never been able to choose between episodes 6 and 7; they’re permanently tied as my favorites of the series. By the way, I noticed that you guys are enjoying the second half more than the first… same! The Pacific is the same way (second half of the series is amazing, probably because of the specific islands/battles involved. Or because of Rami Malek. ☺️)

Hey Fellas, have you all seen any David Mament Movies? They aren't too popular these days, but movie watchers dug them in the 90s. They are all pretty good and Glengarry Glen Ross was GREAT (Start with it). Amazing cast. Can't say they are great for your channel, but you will enjoy watching them.

Honestly, I kinda see this series the way I see The Lord Of The Rings trilogy… I couldn’t pick out one of those movies that is my favorite because they’re all so linked together. I think BoB is like that for me, it’s all one cohesive story… every episode needs the others to really flesh out the characters and their journey as a whole. Amazing work.

Speirs did do it irl. He also killed one of his own men who was drunk and refused direct orders. The latter was within military doctrine, but the former was something else. What he did wasn't "taking no prisoners." He did take the prisoners...they were disarmed, orderly, and obedient. And only then he killed them at his tactical convenience. That's never allowed, under any circumstances. If you can't hold prisoners you already took, you have to let them go, even if it endangers you. Totally ironclad law.

I have a stupid encyclopedic knowledge of this series, so I'm not correcting things because I hate you guys, just simply because I remember them:
Donnie Wahlberg's character is Carwood Lipton. He took that exploding pak gun to the face in Episode 3. The guy that comes over to help him is Sgt. Talbert, who is the same guy that gets bayoneted by Smith later in Episode 3 and Gordon (Machine Gunner who gets paralyzed in Episode 6) gives him one of his purple hearts at the end of Episode 3.
Love the reactions by the way.

I'm sure you get tons of reaction requests for movies. At the risk of being annoying, could I add one for - "1984" based on George Orwell's dystopian novel of the same name. Featuring Richard Burton in his final role along with Joh Hurt. A brilliant, hard-hitting movie. Right up your tree I think!

There's an interview with Winters on TH-cam where he recalls speaking to Speirs prior to the Band of Brothers book coming out in the 90's because they were worried about the legal implications of including the shooting of the prisoners. Speirs readily confirmed to him that he did shoot the prisoners.
