Never torque the locking nut, just snug them. You can imagine this happening on the side of the road when you get a flat tire.. Trust me people, snug them down by handle only, this isn't just a bmw thing, most OEM locking nuts are weak and should never be over torqued.
@@justinbuice I've been through this and I feel your pain. I only barely snug the locking nuts by hand, just enough for them not to fall off. I mean, if you have one lug nut out of spec, your wheel isn't going to fall off and if anything, that locking nut falls off, I say good riddance..
@@Jagshemasher BMW specifically says to NOT use lubricants on the wheel bolts. It's explicitly stated that they are to go on dry. Same reason you don't put anti seize on spark plugs, you're adding a torque multiplier that will strip out the threads.
@@Hubscharber - agree with spark plugs but I live in a country that puts salt on its roads 6 months a year so after shearing off various lug bolts and triple square VW brake caliper bolts that then need drilling out and re-tapping (turns a 45 minute brake job into a 2 day ordeal) I figure it is the lesser of the evils. p.s. I am an engineer so I get it. BMW engineers also tell you your gearbox transmission oil is "lifetime" but I would strongly advise changing it every 50,000 miles. I just don't tighten the bolts as much and periodically check to make sure they are not loose.
The plan is to do a wheel stud conversion next spring. As for the wheel locks, I wasn't planning on using them, but after breaking my other key, I had to order a new key to get the remaining wheels off the car.
Had loads of issues with them.. i eventually managed to find an imperial socket on it and get them out...i took to a dealer and they offered to take out the nuts for free but stripped 2 keys..lol.. Had to do it myself in the end. Mind you, got to have a vice , crowbar and hammer to re use the socket as the nut gets stuck in pretty tight.
Don't sell your situation short. And no matter how shitty you have it in life, there is ALWAYS those who have it worse!!! So you can't feel guilty for complaining about something worth complaining about. BMW SHOULD be ashamed of that design. You were spot on!!!!
Happened on my car... Had to weld a socket to an extension bar and then weld that to the wheel bolt... Fair to say I’ll never put locking wheel nuts on again
Material contraction, coefficient of thermal expansión, due to low temperaturas (different materials). When you set those wheels probably exterior temperatures were higher. With cold climates like yours, to do this type of works is better to stand the car 24 hours or a whole night in a warm garage to aclimate it. Agurrak,
Honestly, Justin. don't feel bad. Murphy's Law always plays a role in the simplest of things...happens all the time. Good luck at the dealership! Hope they don't charge you an arm and a leg for what they know to be their product defect's fault in the first place. Great that you shared the pain in this video. It may truly help someone chose a better wheel lock and prevent them from having a similar issue. Great Video man!
I feel your pain man. I've been trying to find a 10 spline × 17mm lugnut key/ socket for my wheels but no luck. It's been a major headache trying to find this "unique" socket.
In tyre shops they do dozens of them a day and use impact guns on them (they are not supposed to be used with impact tools) and they don't damage them and you manage to damage them with hand tools. How is that possible 🤔 Anyway bmw wheel locks are more reliable ones, all you need to do is fully insert them into wheel bolt
I just bought those locks literally a hour ago. I didn't get a chance to put them on and after watching this I certainly will not. That has got to be the most frustrating.
I sheared off my wheel lock too! I went to the dealer and they told me to use my compressor to air blow the broken bit out. Came right out. Regardless I had to buy a new wheel lock, just to get the wheels off, and like you, I ain't using them again!
Had the same problem with my wheels. I was so excited to get on my new rims, but then the wheel lock broke, on a friday night. Had to wait 2 days for the dealership to open. I threw all wheel locks away and bought 20 new bolts. :p
Well look at the bright side Justin, if somebody was stealing your wheels they wouldn't be able to get them. Also, imagine how boring life would be if everything was easy, hahaha. I've had the same problem and I ordered a wheel lock removal system from Amazon called Sunex 2840 that only really worked when I put a tiny piece of sandpaper around the lug and then hammered the socket looking lug remover on the lug and it worked perfectly. The feeling of relief when they start coming off is unbelievable. Good luck with that. Never over tighten these wheel locks ever and never give wheel locks over to the installer at the tire place because they will use the air wrench on them and totally ruin them. I'm just talking from experience. Also if you can find a metric lug wrench that looks like a cross with 4 different lug sockets on each end you should be using that to remove your lugs instead of the setup you have because the torque is more evenly distributed around the lug when removing a stubborn lug. If you can Hammer a standard socket unto what's left of the lug, try a Little piece of 600 grit or so sandpaper strip around it first and give it a go even if all you can do is cut a strip of sandpaper and place it over the head of the lug before the socket gets put on. Again, good luck man. Love your videos keep them coming.
If you wanted to avoid the stealership you could drill out the bolt just to where you get the head off then use a similar tool to the one you bought but smaller yo remove the remaining bolt. Awesome video! Keep the good content flowing, you’re definitely a huge inspiration!!
I’ve been subscribed since about 20k subs and every video since just reminds me why I subbed. Amazing editing skills bro. Keep these quality videos up🔥🔥🔥
Literally got rid of them today. Got the car from an auction and the key wasn't in the car so I hammered a 12 point 21 inch with a sledgehammer untill I got it out
I have 19s for the summer and 18s for the winter, and am about to do this exact same thing. Hopefully no issues! Taking the car to the dealership is an unfortunate and expensive end to a frustrating day.
Hey Justin, I work at a BMW dealer, and the new McGard wheel locks are just as bad! Customers constantly come in ordering new wheellock keys. I’d suggest an aftermarket brand!
On my 2001 E46 the factory wheel lock is still in 90-80% shape. Just NEVER torque them, but the other 4 ! Only locking by hand, cca half the torque....but if you see, that yours worn out, just buy a new set of wheel locks.
What a bummer! I just got some new blizzaks for my one series and got a piece of steel In one of the tires 2 hours after I got them put on.I feel your pain.
Justin Buice yeah I love them. However I'm an idiot and put the lefts on the rights and vice versa. They're all facing backwards and I face palmed so hard once it was daylight and I saw the arrows.
Thanks! I gently tossed them so they would hit the center of the wheel face-up. Then i cut the video at the exact frame where the center cap hit the middle of the wheel and cut to a clip of it pushed in. I actually wasnt sure how it would turn out but it worked better than I thought
i have the same issue now, yesterday i went to the store to change the replace with new tires the just one of the nut stuck and stripped off completely, store guy said better to go to dealership to fix it and i had to replace all the nuts except the stuck once so that i dont have that issue in future, such a waste of money, i wonder how much the dealership will charge on this :(
I literally came into that problem a couple of weeks ago on my 2010 650i got it resolved the next day and then to find another damaged bolt. Just took it to my Indy to have the work done. Headache of my life P.S. I was replacing my brake pads and rotors. The one bolt on the front that held the hub to the rotor was stripped beyond my ability to fix big oof
I got a quote last time this happened. They said around $165 which sucks but at this point I just want them off. Discount Tire didnt want to mess with them because there’s so little clearance between the lock and the wheel.
Justin Buice Damn that price is crazy but just biting the bullet and getting it done beats all the frustration. Now ur better informed for next time. Good luck with everything. Kinda funny urs are waaaay in there and mine stick out waaaay too far on my ‘17 Charger lol.

Bruh bruh bruh😓😓 my key simply broke whist taking my wheels off to change my brakes 2 weeks ago!! Had to order a new one. I eventual decided to weld a breaker bar onto the locked nuts and took it off for good!! This is easily in my top 10 things I hate about BMW!!
Had the same problem... Had to bring them at a tire shop...They took out 3 of them with a stud extractor... So if these guys can get an extractor , so can the thieves..! Threw them all away... Junk.
Hi, thanks for sharing so what end up happening the next day was the dealer able to get it off and if so did they charge you? I have the similar issue with my wife Mini Cooper the teeth broke off inside the lug nut.
Cool vid. Have the exact BMW security lugs that going like yours. Will prob replace them next summer. Hey you ever consider making a video on cleaning out the fronts of the rocker panels. I pulled the wheel well liner in my wife’s old Vw golf and they were filled with leaves and mud retaining water. The lower part of that wheel well behind the front tires began to rust due to the moisture build up. I know e90’s have the leave guards under the hood to stop the leaves from dropping down in there but I know some get threw. It would be cool to see how I could do that on an e90.
That's the reason why I don't use wheel locks you know if you really have to use wheel locks you might want to convert two studs and lug nuts that might help you and changing your wheels will be a little easier to✌🏿
Kinda confused, I’ve had two bmw’s e46 & e90. None of them have had these wheel locks. They have had lug bolts. Just wondering how come your car has these locks? Is that factory or you got them so people wouldn’t steal your wheels? Nonetheless, good luck!
Thanks! I believe the locks are a factory option but you can also buy them from the BMW dealership which is what I did when I got my first set of aftermarket wheels

I did manage to remove 3 of them like you did, hammering a socket on it. Then a need to get a bolt remover, luckily enough local shop remover were on sale 20$. Bought those lock nuts on ebay, already had issue with the seller not giving me the right key before my issue. Bought him the cheapest shit to give him a bad review. fck that. I was so pissed
"I just want something on this car to work the way it's supposed to... You can't understand what I'm feeling right now." Oh, oh yes I do. I can do a complete brake job of pads and rotors, adjust ride height, remove, clean, and reinstall the HVAC blower fan, and troubleshoot and fix a leaking oil pump on a C7 in less time than it took me to get the wheels off of an E90 and replace the PDU so that the car will start again and I can drive it home on DOT street tires. had same problem just put regulat socket hammer it and turn at least it worked out for me

Removed my locks when i saw your previous video 😂
Nice! I should have tried to remove all of mine when it was still warm out 😫
My problem is I don’t know my own strength, I snapped my wheel nut in half tightening to hard cost me 30 to get a blow torch on it and pliers 😂 🤦🏻♂️
What size are your aftermarket wheels and tires u have been n your car??
Love the new video editing! Hate those BMW wheel locks!

Dude, I'm going to...... I'm going to ask.... How many emblem throws did you make? 🤣
it took quite a few tries lol
I have same lug nut key and I broke two of them at standard torque settings, they are crap

It's the worst when the smallest thing creates such a big issue. If the dealership can't get em out, you may (worst case scenario) have to drill em' out. :-(
The dealership was able to remove them thankfully
bro i feel ur pain im stuck with mine and my shocks are goneeeee. cant change them with a wheel on.
I have those wheel locks. Gonna order some alternative ones stat!
🤞 They're only 1 years old, hopefully they aren't fucked yet.
my dad had it on his 5series with a flower patern and it got destroyed too.
what kind of camera do you use?
Did you ditch the locking nuts?
OE wheel locks are fine dude - sounds like someone wrestled those things WAY too tight
