For everybody saying that BMW sucks or whatever because of different little issues that can go wrong just remember every car has certain common issues and nothing worth having comes easily 😊 I'm on my 3rd and 4th BMW, love every one. They do have occasional issues as do all other cars, regular maintenance and preventative maintenance is key. Take care of your car and it will take care of you.
Also if you get one with any car with a standard it will last a lot longer cuz it's simpler than an automatic and manual cars are really cheap since no one wants them except ppl like me
Just got my first BMW which is a 2008 E90 328xi 6spd manual with 80k miles and with all service history done at the dealer. It was also only owned by 1 previous person, which was a woman in her 50's, and I got it for $8k USD. Hope it lasts awhile without too many headaches. It's such a solid and fun car to drive!
If you switch from standard brake pads to ceramic ones, as recommended, you'd better change all four at the same time to maintain braking balance betwen front and back wheels. I've had several BMWs over the years and we have two now, a 2000 528i and a 2008 328 wagon (my wife's). Both were bought new. I've done all the maintenance since the warranties expired. Not that much has gone wrong. I change the oil and filter once a year in Spring, usually 8 to 10k miles. Neither car burns any oil. I would change it more often if I lived in a harsh winter area. Failures on the 528 have been: exhaust side camshaft position sensor, $100, less than 1hour: thermostat failed, so I did serpentine belts and tensioners as well, $280, 6 hours; valve cover gasket leaked, so changed plugs as well, $120, 2.5 hours; driver's side door gasket, $?, 1 hour. The back up distance sensor system failed and I left it that way. The 328 had no problems till age 9. Then the starter failed and the valve cover gasket started leaking, both were a lot of work to fix but not expensive (new OEM Bosch starter $148 last year, 5 hours). The valve cover gasket was a pain to change, probably took me 7 hours altogether with a plug change. Did belt, pulley and tensioner in an hour, very easy, Continental kit $108. Both cars run great and feel tight and strong still. I don't think I even had any light bulb failures at all. Please don't tell me BMW cars are junk. They are expensive to fix if you don't do it yourself. Use TH-cam videos for instruction and car club forums to learn how to DIY. There are often several videos on a given repair or maintenance job. I just bought a full M spec 525d 2013 Touring . I’m having it shipped to me because I live on a island . I have never driven a BMW let alone own one . I also bought the car with out doing a test drive but it is from one owner and a full bmw service history and the dealer gave me a 18 month warranty. So from all the comments I think I’m in for a treat when I get behind the wheel of it . I’m really excited.
@@shaquieloatmeal8776 I gave $17,000 for mine, 65k on the dial, just had it refinanced at 5% interest, is that a fair price for the car? It's in immaculate condition, a few minor blemishes in th the black finish.
Another vote for Akebono pads. Practically no dust and stops on a dime even when wet and cold. The only down side is the back plate on the pads tend to be a bit smaller than stock and you do get a clunky sound with the caliper while the pads bite on the rotor, Akebono might have solved that problem lately.
Just bought my 1st BMW last move. it's a 2002 330ci. Haven't been able to drive it cuz I had a survey 2 weeks ago but can't wait to get behind the wheel. Thanks for these tips and I've seen a few of your videos and you really good advice. Keep the videos coming they're really helpful.
So a few weeks ago I was eating lunch at my fiancé's restaurant and got into a conversation with one of the girls that work there. I drive bright blue e93 335i and my girl has a e93 328i and they girl had taken notice and began a convo about bmws. She was complaining about the fact she had recently let one of her friends " a 17 year old boy" take her car and wash wash for her one day. When he brought the car back the CEL was on and the car ran horribly. So after taking the car to the shop found out it the boy had been out racing it. Well turns out she never knew much about bmws and the whole time she had the car she was putting regular unleaded fuel in the car and rarely ever changed the oil. It was the f31 lower trim model with the little turbo 4 cylinder .... and I tried to explain to her with "performance oriented forced induction" like hers that you can't run low octane fuel and also compound the problem with no maintenance. Needless to say I feel she has learned her lesson on low quality gas.... and letting 17 year old boys drive her car. 💁♂️ Probably will be the last bmw she owns 🤣
Any kind of "little" leaks are a must fix, especially oil filter housing and oil cooler housing leaks. Oil saturated my pulleys and belt and threw it off and now I need a new powersteering pulley and have to fork out another $250 for a crank seal removal and installer tool because the belt wrapped up and damaged it. God knows if I have any belt debris in my engine. Only time will tell. It all started with a $15 seal that took about 20 minutes to replace that is now a $350 fix that will take a good weekend to fix
Thanks for your list of tips! Having an independent mechanic and doing some of the work myself has been a great help financially. I would like to add plan ahead, and be patient to the list. Car problems can be frustrating.
just bought a series 3 320i 2015, any specific pieces of advice for this model? going to pick it up from the dealership tomorrow morning and it’s my first ever bmw, mad excited
I second the comment about the dusty and fast wearing front brake pads. I replaced mine with ceramic pads when the brake wear sensor on the dashboard came on. The new pads require noticeably greater pedal pressure but create very little dust. The pad wear sensors will have a small strip of metal worn off them when the pads get thin enough to to allow the rotors to rub the sensors. When the metal strip wears off, the brake pad wear indicator light turns on. The Sensors can be repaired by soldering a small short across the remainder of the sensor's metal strip. Keep the short thin, not a large blob of solder or the rotor will rub it off prematurely.
Man this video was literally what I needed. Just copped my 335I and I'm itching to start working on it! You, Adam Lz, Simply car things, Brandon B, and BMW Fanatic are hands down teaching this young grasshopper so much! Lol Definitely going to join those groups to get my insight. Thanks for the videos my man.
An oil change costs $120 - $150 at a dealership? Wow, I don't think I've ever paid more than $30 to have the oil changed at a dealership on my '96 Civic.
Yep had the 530 m sport was an m54 engine. Same one in the e46 m3. Called an s54. Magnesium alloy head. Super great straight six lump. Will out last all the turbo lumps now. I have twin turbo desiel now. F30 model.
Just got my first BMW, also a 2008 328xi. 80k miles. 1 previous owner. 6spd Manual. A giant difference from my last ride which was a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 270k miles lol. Still have the Jeep, might just keep it to save miles on the BMW until or if it ever dies. That Jeep 4.0L engine is so bulletproof.
@@paulmutuura3817 all I’ve needed to replace so far are the rear shocks and springs as well as the cable box (128,000 miles). Do you measure Octane different in the US, compared to Europe ? The lowest Octane here in Germany is 95. Premium fuel has 98 and special fuel from a big company even has 102 Octane and you can get it at almost every of there stations
3:59 more and more sellers are including the carfax, so if you DIY, you don't get that maintenance on record. Nor do you if you go to a lube shop. Buyers might skip your listing if the carfax is empty on the maintenances. Obviously if you keep it till the wheels fall off or trade it in, no worries.

Subject to cars warranty being expired. Everything he said is great but please remember if your car is brand new and any work is carried out by yourself or a none BMW dealer this will affect re-sale or trade-in value and your warranty.
Just sold my BMW today. It’s a nice car to drive, and yes the look and the feel is amazing, but even after doing preventative maintenance, and there STILL being issues. I mean if it’s just my bad luck than I guess I suck, but that can be someone else’s problem. I have a 2015 Nissan with all he bells and whistles, I’m saving the rest of my money for a trip overseas, I have no regrets :)
which bmw was it? and honestly just to tell you the truth the nissan is actually worth then the bmw now nissan is owned by a french company their so unreliable now
Star Ships I agree the newer Nissan went down, my girlfriend has a 2006 Pathfinder with 160k miles and that thing never goes to a service shop, runs like brand new, the newer Pathfinder are rubbish compared to it.
Hey man, I've just gotta say this has been super helpful, I also live in michigan, just bought my first BMW and have been quite intimidated, this has made me feel a lot better. thank you very much!!
Pretty awesome getting to See your channel grow, man. I remember when you first started out and I think I subscribed around 10k sub. All your videos are helpful, and you influenced me to get my first bmw. Keep up the great work!
People need to understand, all cars need maintenance.I have a 2013 535i that i need to keep up but it also helps if your car savy.I do my own oil change, battery replacement, lighting install it factors to save money & enjoy a nice car.
Some good advice there. It applies to any make, not just BMW. I've just bagged a 1995 E36 BMW 318i SE saloon (sedan) and I'll be doing as much of the work as possible myself. Genuine OEM parts from the dealer aren't always expensive and are sometimes on a par pricewise with good quality aftermarket parts. I'm glad we don't have those oil change places here in the UK unless you count Kwik Fit (one of the tyre and exhaust "fast fit" chains).
1) Check the tyre pressure at least once a week, handling goes off well before the pressure sensors kick in. 2) If you like cornering fast throw away the run flat tyres. 3) If the car runs wide out of corners try turning the computer aids to DTC, if that cures the problem you need new / better tyres. 4) On a 1 series or E90 don't even think about cheap oil, Castrol Edge fully synthetic is one of the best. Scrimping on this will lead to a snapped camchain and a totaled engine. 5) Forget the oil change interval in the manual (mine says every 2 years or 15,000 miles) minimum every 10,000 miles or every year whichever comes first (see camchain problems above). 6) Don't drive a really good front wheel drive car as it will show up the BMW's weaknesses and you might wish you hadn't bought one.
Working on E90 320i N46 engine is pretty simple. I have replaced crank sensor, intake gasket and oil filter housing gasket in one day. I haven’t worked on a bmw before and I’m not a mechanic. If I can do it, anyone can do it. As Justin said, you can save alot of money doing your own repairs.
I have a 750Li & a 528i, both are a blast to drive. Take care of the car, it takes care of you. If you can, do most of preventive maintenance yourself. Save yourself a ton of $
Just bought a 320i with red interior , picking it up today , I’m from NYC, it will be my weekend car since we have the subway here, but they shut it down at night time at 1 AM till 5 AM
BMWs are great machines, the key to have them forever is to follow the recommended maintenance (if you skip this, you will be screwed), and for difficult repairs or stuff you don´t know where the problem is, go to a specialist that knows BMW (not everyone knows, actually a lot of people don´t know much), that has the computer to diagnose and identify the issue (if applies). Without the computer to diagnose you are blind, and you could end-up breaking something else, for a repair or maintenance that might be inexpensive.
armand yao For a 330i I would definitely go for headers since you already have the 3 stage manifold. Also an exhaust no muffler deletes though. Congrats on your car.
I do a lot of mods on mine but I have a 328i so first I had to build to 330i specs. Also the intake box and boot would be something to look into replacing I’ve done all of these mods if your interested.
Just recently bought my first BMW - E91 320d Touring, so I've subbed to your channel as I'd like to learn how to do most of the maintenance myself. Just been working my way through a deep clean of the interior, as it's been a family car for some time, and it was in need of some love. Got a few other jobs to do, but a service is now main priority.
Got my first bmw yesterday it’s a 2003 325i lol I’m definitely getting it serviced ASAP lol I’ve heard the stories of people not taking care of their bmws which gave bmw a bad name lol my first foreign was a Volkswagen lol
Hey Justin, what are your thoughts on BMW no longer offering their legendary NA straight six on any of their models? Do you think BMW will return to their glory days and offer cars that cater to enthusiasts like the the previous 3 series gens (E30, E36, E46, E90/2/3)? Not sure if you already touched on this in a previous video...if you did, I'll definitely check it out!
I haven't done a video on it yet but it might be a good idea for future content! I think it's too bad that they no longer offer them and probably never will. I think that all car companies, but especially European and Japanese are prioritizing fuel efficiency and smaller turbo engines have proved to be more efficient. Who knows, maybe one day people will realize how great engines like the N52 were and they will become sought after!
I am sure some of the most models have 6 cylinder engines. Because of emissions regs In Europe they are using 3 and 4 cylinder engines. I have a 2005 118d and it's a 4 cylinder 2.0 liter diesel engine. It's a really nice car but expensive when things go wrong. Coming up for 200k miles soon
I am now one year into owning my first BMW 328i Xdrive. 2015. Bought it when it was 33k miles on now reading 49k only the have done so far is $250 worth maintenance that was for oil change and new filter. I took it to BMW shop.

I just bought a 2014 320i xdrive, 68,000 miles, hope it does well, thanks for the helpful videos, it's my first bmw!
William Thomas dude I just bought a 320i 2014 too ! Two weeks ago to be exact
@@shaquieloatmeal8776 man they are great cars, and fast and drives great, just keep it serviced!
William Thomas yes indeed
@@shaquieloatmeal8776 I gave $17,000 for mine, 65k on the dial, just had it refinanced at 5% interest, is that a fair price for the car? It's in immaculate condition, a few minor blemishes in th the black finish.
i bought mine for 11,500 76k miles like new, just a few interior nics, im loving it so far!
Justin’s channel is da best folks. Practical, easy to follow, helpful DIY for beemer owners. Thanks for your advice JB.
I've occasionally used 89 midgrade in my E46. Runs fine. I think knocking is very rare with computer controlled engines nowdays.
Finally some positivity 💪🏽
Picking up a 1998 Z3 M tomorrow in Ft. Wayne....34K miles...one local owner....VERY EXCITED!
I bought a 06 325 Ci as my first BMW I and love it !!
Treina Lewis how many miles and how is it holding up as of now I’m about to buy that same car
That was my first too lmao. I miss that thing!
Thanks! Just got my first BMW, a 740, super satisfied and these tips are all good to know. 🚗🚗
😍😍 740!!!! Yes!
I bought a 2007 BMW 328i one weeks ago. You're putting out some great info. Very helpful

How is it? Looking to buy a 2009 very soon.

Thank you my bro! Just went from a peugeot 207 to my new bmw and i frickin love it. Great video i am subscribing.
I would rather die than driving any Peugeot
My current car (and 1st car too) is a 406 year 2003. Looking forward to get my first BMW!!
I just bought my first BMW, a 2013 M135i with only 18,000 miles. This video helped a lot thanks.
I do my own servicing on my X3. It’s not hard and TH-cam’s exist for anything you want to do. I did let a mechanic rebuild my transfer case though.
How did it go?
An oil change costs $120 - $150 at a dealership? Wow, I don't think I've ever paid more than $30 to have the oil changed at a dealership on my '96 Civic.
Bought an e46 330ci as my first bmw damn i was happy since it is nearly my dream car (e46 m3)
Yep had the 530 m sport was an m54 engine. Same one in the e46 m3. Called an s54. Magnesium alloy head. Super great straight six lump. Will out last all the turbo lumps now. I have twin turbo desiel now. F30 model.
im thinking should i get an e39 m5 as my first car?
Just got myself a 2013 328i been watching you’re videos quite a bit now finding out all new stuffs I can do thanks for having this info available
Your eyes are always smiling, it’s so cute

Nice video JB. Just bought my first BMW---2008 328xi. Looking forward to enjoying driving again. Big jump from a '96 Civic. Thanks for the great info.
Congrats man. I was conflicted between a newer civic or an older 320/328, but I'm leaning towards the latter.
I just got the 238xi 2009!

Do you measure Octane different in the US, compared to Europe ? The lowest Octane here in Germany is 95. Premium fuel has 98 and special fuel from a big company even has 102 Octane and you can get it at almost every of there stations
Yes, in the US we use the AKI rating system (anti knock index.) In Europe you have RON (research octane number)
Duuuude, I'm a new subscriber but I have a BMW and you are hoeneslty a life saver !!
Planning on getting a 2009 bmw 328 i for my first car, any advice?

My tire pressure sensor went out on one of my tires. Still haven't replaced it. Great information man. I would also add the turn signals and the cup holders are a pain but other than that best car I have ever owned. I love my 335.
Bmw dosent have sensor. It's reading from ABS system your tire pressure so probably u have broken abs sensor. Or broken wheel bearing.
Btw.. If u got just tire pressure light.. Add more air.. And then reset tire pressure from computer and u are ready to go.
Check tire pressures and then reset.
got a 2006 3.0si Z4 a month ago, still haven't done anything to it...but have had a blast driving it! P.S. ITS MANUAL :)
Good luck! You going to nned it
Don’t know anything about BMW I’m glad I found your channel.

Just bought an bmw 316i dont know how to use half of the buttons in the car
My first car this year was a 2014 f30 320i, really do love it :)
Hey Justin, I'm in the market. Thanks for the info and great video!
Still love your vids tho man!!!!
which bmw was it? and honestly just to tell you the truth the nissan is actually worth then the bmw now nissan is owned by a french company their so unreliable now
Star Ships 2011 328i 75k miles on it. Did all the maintenance myself.
which kind of issues? certainly you werent doing enugh maintenance
Star Ships I agree the newer Nissan went down, my girlfriend has a 2006 Pathfinder with 160k miles and that thing never goes to a service shop, runs like brand new, the newer Pathfinder are rubbish compared to it.
Just bought a 2011 335i xdrive msport package with stage 2 dinan performance. This car is quick and super sweet. 67000 miles too
Thank you for the information, but the music is too loud it's hard to focus on what you are saying. Thank you. 👍

@@shahzark5106 Still going!
As Justin said, you can save alot of money doing your own repairs.
i have to install a new crank sensor in my n46 engine too
Very informative! Thanks for the tips!
Damnit Buice, u did it again. Nice vid man. Keep em coming
Thanks!
I just bought a 330i and have no idea what I wanna do as my first mods. Would love to get your insight
armand yao For a 330i I would definitely go for headers since you already have the 3 stage manifold. Also an exhaust no muffler deletes though. Congrats on your car.
I do a lot of mods on mine but I have a 328i so first I had to build to 330i specs. Also the intake box and boot would be something to look into replacing I’ve done all of these mods if your interested.
I'm on the same page. Just got my 335I about 2 weeks ago and I'm itching to start working on it!

Great car. I have the 330D!
93 octane fuel... Bro, lowest octane in europe is 95.
Europe uses a different rating system than the United States
Justin Buice well i guess i learned something new after all... Didn't know that. Seems logic tho
Some places still supply 91 octane ermate...
Never seen it before... and i've been to majority of the countries in central and western europe
Here in Cali the highest is 91(at least that's the highest I've seen)

What do you mean? They do offer S6. At least they do here in Europe.
I swear I thought I was reading my own post when I read this, me n you have same mind
