Wait, I have this car for years now and I used it for like 200.000 miles. I had 0 issues so far except once I had to change Particular Filter. Where did you get this car when you have this many problems with it? In China? Is this replica?! Man 90% of the stuff that you are telling people here is total bullshit.

Bought my 2009 328 back in late 2019 and it had 75k miles 1 owner and a dictionary for a service history . Everything was in great condition . $6500 and I don’t regret a penny ! Trick is to stay on top of it . Change that oil every 8-10k . One thing about these e90s is majority of the work you can do yourself ! Say away from the dealership and educate yourself on maintenance. You should be able to change your coolant , oil , power steering ,ignition coils , cabin air filter , engine air filter and the ability to rotate your tires all at home if you have a jack and a couple stands ! Save $1000s of dollars and do it at home

Great video on what to expect from a E90. I have to agree the car is a reliable can fun car to drive. I bought my e90 brand new. I want to add a couple of issues I have had outside of what you mentioned. Starter at around (65,000 miles) Ignition Coils, I have had to replace 4 of them at different times. Also for those who have Xenon headlights - wiring that connects to ballast, gets old and brittle. 168,000 miles later car is a beast.

So far 2010 E92 stright 6 as for (no turbos) naturally aspirated that has 116980 miles and maintenance is very minimal, oil changes every 3800 miles for the last 12years. 2 battery's, oil housings gasket done , spark plugs BOSCH, valve cover gasket done. And the intake/ exhaust vano's both. 1 coil so far. Probably soon all other coils. And a temp sensor. Nothing more so far. All and all it's a real good running car YES, BMW is a good vehicle. Followed Justin since the early days, I had just bought my e90. Have to say his experience has been relatively good because his car is very low mileage. Most high mileage BMW's will give you drama with cooling systems, perennial fluid leaks and sometimes even more serious engine system failures, all of which are greatly exacerbated by owner negligence.

  • @phaedrusbjb
    @phaedrusbjb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    nice summary justin.
first before buying, do a VIN check. the options show up complete, and that way its possible to see if something is missing or substantially changed. my comfort access did not work, and in fact i didn't even know i had it until i saw the three little ridges on the top of the door handle. the 5A fuse for CA is blown, indicating a short in the door handle module, which i just got replacements for - waiting on paint and weather to fix it.
should add the matter of early E90 valve lifter noise. later models (after 2010) have the hyd lifers fixed. also oil changes should never exceed 7500 miles - the risk with the NA versions (not 335 which does not use Vavletronic throttle) is wear on the vanos seals, which can require a new valvetronic head if the wear is on the intake side. the cam carrier on the exhaust side (called the ledge) can be replaced. i don't believe the M Sport package is available on the X drive models. my E91Xi touring has the sport package, with 17" wheels, bolstered and thigh adjust seats, and paddle shifters - all fun. the seats are the best part, as they are really comfortable.
my E91Xi came with about 85K, so i planned to do the water pump and t-stat pre-emptively. this is a fussy job, with lots of tight clearances, but doable with a relatively complete rack of tools. look on e90 post forums for DIY guidance. a skilled wrencher should plan on 8 hours. another item on the list of early must do's is to drop the trans pan (automatic here) and change fluid and trans filter. this bears repeating - i've seen lifetime trans fluid fail, resulting in a trans swap at 120K. i use Ranger Quick Jacks to get the car in the air for work, and would likely choose them over a lift, when taking account of cost and space requirements.
as for amenities, i like a custom sound system, and the only way to do it easily is with the base Hi Fi package. all the connectors are analog RCA, and there are loads of options for replacement speakers. the higher end packages use a proprietary digital data format directly into the BMW amps, and leave far fewer choices for aftermarket sound. i added SWS 8" 4 ohm woofers, which is not exactly a bolt in (some fab to mount the speaker needed - again E90post forums were great). i bought component speakers and the matching crossovers from Individual Audio cars from ebay - that is all plug and play. finally, for my amp, i used an Arc Audio 6 channel 1200W, bought a technic connector (again E90post), and fabbed some simple bars to mount it in the drivers side rear area after removing the stock HiFi amp. running the 6 gauge wire from the battery terminals on the other side was dead simple. the 6 gauge wire uses stock BMW connectors that plug directly into the terminal block that lives on top of the battery, which makes for a very clean install.
keep up the good work, newly sub'd/

Man, If you see green coolant it's not that it's probably a bad sign, it's almost certainly a really bad sign. As you point out, that's probably going to be only the tip of the cheap maintenance iceberg. I don't know why people skimp on buying the correct coolant, irrespective of the brand of car. Generic coolants in particular are a potential minefield these days. Geez people, we're not dealing with friggin cast iron dinosaurs any more. Genuine BMW coolant isn't really all that expensive anyway, and it's a truckload cheaper than rebuilding your engine after your cooling system spits it's pacifier.
Thanks for your videos mate. Keep it up.

Haha, true story I'm sure Justin. It's a shame to see German engineering getting abused like that. But there's a silver lining to this little cloud and that is, it's people like that who help to keep the multitude of good after market parts manufacturers in business. Ultimately, that gives you and me an array of products to choose from whenever we go to sites like oembimmer or Pelican for our maintenance stuff. Happily, I find it's only rarely that I'll need to buy anything that has "Genuine" on it. Fluids though? Pretty much Always.
      Cheers mate.

Service manual does not mention color. To quote:
      www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e90-316i-lim/repair-manuals/17-cooling/1HZe3We
The cooling system of BMW vehicles must only be filled with the anti-freezing and anti-corrosive agents approved for this purpose. [...]
Antifreeze agents must meet the following requirements:
      - They must guarantee operability of the cooling system in winter (anti-freezing protection by lowering the freezing point) and in summer (prevent boiling and boiling over of the coolant).
      - They must protect metal components that come into contact with the coolant (grey cast iron, steel, aluminium alloy, brass, copper and solder) against corrosion and cavitation.
      - They must be neutral with respect to rubber and plastic parts in the coolant circuit.
      - They must guarantee the consistency of the above-mentioned quality criteria.
To create these coolant properties, the anti-freezing and anti-corrosive agents must be mixed to the correct ratio with water.

Don't be afraid to own one. Don't let the non bmw enthusiast tell you don't get one. my mom had 2 bmw's a e46 330i back in 2004 when it first came out and owned it all the way until she got her 2006 e90. only reason she had let it go it got hit from a school bus behind the car was total'd. there reliable as hell. she is getting a 2015 435i coupe next. there (super safe btw). i can't wait to start my journey with my e36.

I just got a 2010 Tasman Metallic 328i with 82,000 miles. It came with recent dealer clutch, oil pan gasket, oil filter gasket and new struts. It has no iDrive, which I don't want. I had to replace 2 sticky door handles, driver's cup holder, and put the stock stereo BACK IN. Car drives great. I'll keep an eye on valve cover gasket and water pump. It's a 6-speed! I do all my own work and feel privileged to have this car and look forward to maintaining it.

That was a very good review Justin. You are an expert on this series of BMW as far as I'm concerned. I have the same mirror issue on the passenger side of my 2007 e90 328i, but at least it still functions. I seldom fold my mirrors anyway so I doesn't bother me in the least. Been thinking about replacing the water pump and thermostat as preventive maintenance even though they both seem fine right now. Thanks for part 2!

No issues Justiin, none. My 2010 328i E92 N51 M-Sport pak. That car is outrageous, drives with the exact feel of a supercar. Hydraulic steering a must. Sport seats, paddle Shifters. Suspension tweaks, big brake pak. 289 horses. That car is just pure excitemen. .

I have the 2007 BMW 328XI. 85K miles. Black on black manual drive. Absolutely love the vehicle. The only issue I have had was the ground cables rusted and I could not start the vehicle. It was a cheap repair less than $50. I have changed all the spark plugs. Other than that the vehicle gets driven daily and has yet to let me down.

Hi Justin, I have been following your channel for some time now. Really fantastic stuff and real-life lessons on BMWs. Inspired by you, I am also looking for a used BMW instead of a run of the mill civic or Camry. I plan to use it for office commute and occasional weekend trips. I am looking for a sixth gen 3 series diesel from 2012 to 2016, maybe a 328d. Does it seem like a wise decision for my first car? Also, is CPO worth it for added peace of mind for these German cars?

I bought a 2007 328xi wagon 2 years ago. The one and only issue that cost me $1500 to fix was the water pump. Other than that, it's been rock solid. I didn't care for the iDrive, since I heard it was very problematic. So it wasn't an option I wanted. I definitely would love to source out the aluminum trim to replace the outdated wood trim. My only wish was I found a wagon in manual transmission.

BMW gives the best performance, especially on highway, any driver takes a bimmer on the road, roll down your windows, and step on the gas, listen to that sweet engine with the twin turbo, it's very addictive to drive.

Just bought a 2006 330xi for a daily driver today.
I saw on the car fax that thermostat and pump replaced around 40k. Regular maintenance looked proper.
The driver mirror folds in and keeps trying to go so I will have to replace or maybe find some diy-ish. Blower motor was good and heated seats worked.
Thanks for the video. I'll check the headlight fluid pooling when I pick up next week.

Just catching up with the channel after obviously a few years. I've owned a 2000 WRX for 4 years, a 2004 WRX for 10 years and a 2004 Forester XT for 10 years. I loved them both! I currently own along with a couple of non performance Subaru's, a 2007 335 XI that I bought in 2009. I live in upstate NY where snow and ice is a common road condition. The BMW rides so low to the ground that it will snow plane up onto the snow and slush on the road. Not a great condition. I have no reservations running the Subaru's in any snow or ice condition. I leave the 335 XI in the garage during snow days in the winter.BTW snow tires are a waste of money on these cars. Good all seasons are perfect.
I love my BMW it handles much better than a Subaru.....except in snow or on ice. However the speed and fun that I had in the turbo charged Subaru's was fantastic! One note, do not put non run flats on your BMW. The heavier side wall on the run flat means that when your tire goes completely flat your rim is not literally sitting on the ground. A non run flat will leave your BMW sitting so low that you cannot easily get the jack under the car to lift it. Speaking from experience here. Otherwise enjoy your BMW performance car!

I would advise against getting a Xenon option. You can save yourself allot of headaches.
You had a good point on the coolant.
I would be careful of the windscreen washer drains, make sure they are cleared of leaves and water can drain properly, you can avoid a nasty DME and EE box replacement.

So I've been juggling between getting a 2010 or so Mercedes C300, 2010 BMW 328i, or a 2007 Acura TLS. After talking to a couple friends, watching some videos (many of witch from your channel), I think I'll go with the 328i. Loved Bimmers for ages and love the look of the E90's. I'd probably be paying right around the same for maintance and parts for all three cars anyway haha.

Just traded in a really nice Lexus LS 430 that was a hell of a good car: but I had a 735 BMW prior to that, and it was in fact a "drivers car". SO: I did my homework, and got an '09 535IX with all the goodies ('cept the M package...) and made it 85 miles before the power steering and battery lights came on. Seems that "sucking in the serpentine belt" is a regular occurrence, if oil gets on the belt.. Fortunately the seller gave me no grief in honoring the warrantee I had purchased from him, so I will pick up the car a second time this week.
Good tip on the coolant: I thought it applied only to the magnesium blocks..
    Thanks!

Carfax is a must! The gaskets are a very common problem. Everything else besides the window regulators is more specific to earlier models many problems were specific to before mid 2008. Also in those cars the camshaft bearings can fail that was also a pretty common issue. Otherwise great video keep them coming!

    • @BMWE90HQ
      @BMWE90HQ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

In mid 2008 these rings I forget what they are called but they changed the material they are made of they cause the can bearing failure. If you experience that failure you should replace everything with the new parts used on the mid 08+ and delete the oil separator since on the new cover the oil separator is built into the valve cover.

Wrong about the coolant color Justin.
BMW now makes green coolant known as HT-12. It's also backwards compatible with any BMW that originally had blue coolant.
My dealership did a coolant flush on my E93 and refilled it with the new green stuff.
