Your first board was bamboo which is actually a grass. It tends to engrave unevenly. I would try two things, I would drop your dpi to 200 instead of 300 (that will make you engrave time quicker) and I would make the laser head out of focus probably by 2-3mm. I believe that makes the beam wider (the head is further away from the wood so it casts a wider beam) and seems to help on bamboo. Btw I'm still experimenting on bamboo, I much prefer Cherry to engrave it is much more consistent.
