I am new to laser engraving as well, using a 40w diode laser. Coming from a design background helps a lot. With your embroider background will help tremendously! Just take your time project by project. And yes it is exciting…SO many possibilities! 😂

Which hoop setting do you push on the ricoma for that size mighty hoop?

Your first board was bamboo which is actually a grass. It tends to engrave unevenly. I would try two things, I would drop your dpi to 200 instead of 300 (that will make you engrave time quicker) and I would make the laser head out of focus probably by 2-3mm. I believe that makes the beam wider (the head is further away from the wood so it casts a wider beam) and seems to help on bamboo. Btw I'm still experimenting on bamboo, I much prefer Cherry to engrave it is much more consistent.

Hi Kayla, new subscriber here. I have the same machine Ricoma TC1501. Have you had the tie off or start and stop thread at the top not fully cut ? It’s not always, but sometimes I will have a bunch of strings on the top. It’s almost like the blade is not fully cutting or it cuts way late and leaves a long tail. I need to call Ricoma but wondered if you can provide any advice on that. Love your energy. Thank you

I’m completely agree with your opinion, I own EM1010, yes I see a lot comments, wish I believe is user error. I always said training is the key. Ricoma customer portal is the great area to start learning about your machine.

I’ve been told you should use fabric and stabilizer when you do your tension test to get more accurate results.

Always start with a constant. Set the bobbin tension with a gauge first, then you can set the top tension. Invest in the tension gauge and you will thank me.

I have the same machine and I have been having the same problem since I purchased it a year ago. I am ready to just get rid of it because I cannot get the correct. I also have trouble with number nine no matter what thread I use, it always has a thread break. I wish you would do another video, threading the machine and oiling it.

YAY, How exciting. I have a Thunder Nova 35. Mine is almost 3 years old and she's a beast. I love the thunder team. Such great people. Especially if you ever run into amy issues, they are so helpful. Even outside of warranty they still help their customers.

It’s a great laser for cutting thin wood/acrylic and engraving. Going up to 1/4” wood you’ll soon realize how slow it is.
