Hello to all Four of you,
I grew up in Northern Wisconsin. Eagle River and Land O Lakes. But I didn't start to live in my tent until I was in my 40th year. I moved to Colorado in 1971 and so all my backcountry living took place out West. Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. I'm now 76 years old and in bad shape. I live in my bed. But my spirits are always high living the rest of my life through you and other TH-camrs. I feel that I'm with you every moment of your video. Thankyou for making the final part of my life a joyous and complete one.

My son got bit by a brown recluse on his Achilles tendon. He ignored it for awhile, but when he finally went to the dr - they had to debride the area. He also had to take antibiotics for about 6 weeks. That was a few years ago and he now has a dip in his heel where they had to clean out the necrotized flesh. Not something you want to mess with or ignore.

Back in the 1970s, I got bit *three times* on my legs by one while living on the 5th Floor of a NYC apartment. Went to the doctors who just scratched their heads and finally thought that *maybe, maybe* I had tuberculosis of the bones, but they had no idea and didn't have an x-ray that was able to scan it, so they shrugged and left it at that. It was my ex-mother-in-law who suggested I put boric acid ointment on it since the bites were ulcerating down to the bone, which I did, for weeks and always wore slacks to work to cover the bandages. I still have the scars, 50+ years later. It was another friend who had been studying medicine who suggested it was probably a brown recluse.

I fell asleep while I was laying on the floor in Daytona Beach Florida and a brown recluse crawled up my shorts leg and bit my derriere. At first I just thought it was a zit and kept trying to keep it popped. After about 10 days it hurt to walk, and I definitely could not sit down. I finally went to the ER and the Dr. had to cut out the necrotic flesh and he said it was so deep that he had to go in 3x because the blade on his scalpel wasn't long enough to get it all at one time. I had to pack the hole for a month, take antibiotics and crtizone. I couldn't sit and could barely walk it hurt so bad. That was 5 years ago and I have a scarred pit the diameter of a nickel and twice as deep as a nickel is thick. A brown recluse bite will kill a person if not treated.

I saw one on our window screen once in Connecticut. My wife is afraid of spiders anyway, and she was extra scared upon the sighting, and became super scared when we looked it up.
We moved to Tennessee last year and is now extra cautious about such things. She wouldn't even touch the wood pile we had at first.

I got bit by a brown recluse on my back in the right shoulder area. My entire right back, arm and chest swelled. It hurt like the dickens too. I ran a slight fever, but the swelling and pain at the bite location were the worst. I went to the doctor right away (the next morning) and they gave me steroids and antibiotics and it eventually got well. It took a good while for the swelling to go down and especially in the area or the bite. The bite itself look almost like an ulcer about a dime in size. I was lucky I did not get any necrosis, or have any skin lose. One thing I do want to tell you because this is well documented, but only by observation and the doctors will not mention it. Brown recluse bites can swell again months and even years after the original bite. Mine swelled at least 4 or 5 times over a 2 year period before it totally went away. Each time it was not as bad as the previous time, and then it would heal and be gone for weeks or months. I went to doctor when it came back the first time which was about 4 months after the first bite, and the doctor just pooh poohed it and said it had to be a new bite. In the exact same place, no. Then it swelled again about 6 months after the second recurrence and I started doing research. This recurrence is well documented. So just be aware that that could happen. It doesn’t happen in all cases and the epsom soaks may help it because they believe it occurs because the poison from the bite takes a long time to disappear in your body. Take very good care and watch the bite location close. If the skin starts looking necrotic or turning ugly colors, get back to the doctor. A brown recluse bite is nothing to mess with.
So, where would he have gotten bitten? The recluse lives in dark warm areas with little light. Thus the name, recluse. So you might check your closets and any dark area of the bus that isn’t used regularly that Chris got into recently. Maybe an area where tools are stored, the electric closet, etc. I think mine came from my closet. The spider, I think, got into a shirt that I hadn’t worn in a while that I put on the day I noticed the bite. So be careful and take care.

I’ve always heard for every one you see there’s a lot more you don’t see, even though you didn’t actually see the one that bit Chris just the damage it left behind. I've been with Chris's channel for going on 10 years. (If not already 10). I've been around thru his various channel name changes, various camper vehicles, different hairstyles, different meal preps and his travels thru different states and countries. But the one thing that he is consistent with, is his goals and passion for living his life to the absolute fullest! He has shown his viewers this thru his awesome videos. I'm so glad that he and Kobuk now have you and Akela to share this awesome way of living. It's cool that you two can teach and learn from one another. I'm glad that you have his back. All the best to you as a couple and as individuals. Love, Peace, Good Health and Prosperity to both of you. 🙂

GUYS!! I'm in Australia. You MUST have some essentials on board. I think CLAY is an essential. The best I have ever found is called Pascalite. It's from the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming. I've been using it for YEARS! Fixes everything !! Take it internally....one teaspoon in a glass of water. Always mix with a wooden or plastic spoon as it has a high negative charge with attracts the bad positively charged problems like heavy metals ...parasites etc. You can use it externally also. If you had have smothered that bite with Pascalite it would have probably saved you a trip to the Doctor. Truly it is amazing stuff. If you do order it maybe you should buy their book while you're at it. It's called "More precious than Gold" GREAT book !!

FYI - An old Navajo remedy. I've been watching Chris for a long time. Next time, for an infection, find some tree sap and put in a container. This sap can last for a long time. Take some sap, warm it up but not too hot. Spread it on a bandaid and put it on the area where it's got the pus... that tree sap will suck out all the bad stuff.. Change the bandaid once a day.

Hi Linnea tea tree oil is a good "natural" disinfectant to have on hand . The one important caution is to completely avoid any contact with your eyes. Also keep it away from cats. I have been using it for years as my "go to " infection control. A few years back I spilled hot boiling water on the back of my right hand while making coffee in my work truck. With no ice to apply on my hand, the only thing I had at the time was the tea tree oil. I applied it about 4 to 6 times a day for the next week. No infection and no scarring.it completely healed and both hands look identical. Also the oil minimizes pain from a burn. Bee honey is a great topical ointment to use on damaged skin. Tt was used in the 2nd world war for a coating under bandages. Have a great day take care of Kris. Spider bites can kill and maim. Tom in Canada at the NB-NS border .

Bit by Brown Recluse years ago. I'd never heard of a Brown Recluse! Felt a burning sensation on my forearm, saw the spider, flicked it away. About 10am. By that evening I had pain and swelling, also swelling in my armpit. By noon the next day there were red streaks going up my arm from the bite area. Called my doctor, explained it, he said come right in. Long story short, lanced it, huge plug in the middle that came out after few days and left a hole in my forearm that a pencil eraser could have fit in. Antibiotics. Out of work for four weeks. They are wicked little creatures.

    Enjoy your channel immensely!
I'm 70 and have split a lot of wood, and I do mean a lot!
I have a safety suggestion born out of my many mistakes, always wear eye protection, especially when trying to drive a splitting maul into wood, with any hammer.
Metal pieces can, and do, chip and fly off with enough force to go through clothing and deep into the flesh (ask me how I know).
If the chip were to hit bare eye the adventure is going on hold for a while.
A person can put pressure and a bandage on a leg that is bleeding copious amounts of blood, (it was like getting shot with a .22) But you can't do that with an eye.
So when in doubt, eye protection come out.
Thank you for sharing and now living winter camping vicariously through your videos.
    Merry Christmas.

I can also advise u that there is a "natural flow" to living off grid, it's seasonal as it should be, and preparing is a lot of ur time for moments like this. Don't get overwhelmed, when you're injured or ill it's a time to reduce ur flow, when u gain strength u prep for the next time 👍❤️

There is nothing more special than the woods after a snow ❄️ it's emotional and magical. And the stillness is deafening sometimes.

You can buy Frostboards and place over the solar panels before it snows. This way it keeps them protected and you don't have to worry about Ice. and just take off when the sun comes back out.

Love this. Thank you for posting . It might sound corny but I feel like you are all a part of my family. I'm not living your lifestyle YET but I am working towards it every day. Watching your videos give me the motivation to pursue my dreams, especially on the days when said dreams seem so far away and unattainable. Happy holidays and a blessed new year to you all🖤

What a wonderful choice you made staying off grid during this Holyday Seasons! May the best be with you all! And thank you for reminding us all how nature, and deep, far nature reminds us of our bodily mind, emotional limits finding humility..face of the grand cycle of life is a privilege and a virtue we too quickly forget when being urban or sedentary!
May the best be with all along 2023!

Get potted plants of lemon balm and spearmint for your vans. Spiders hate them. You can use leaves for tea. If the die hang them by stems and let dry. Lemon balm, olive oil and beeswax make a great balm for bites.
