Agreed. Sonata Arctica's earlier work was the pinnacle of speed based power metal. I used to spin their stuff like it was going out of style in the mid 2000's :)

I really hope that you make a video for sophomores on Power Metal and that you include Angra's second album, Holy Land, which is not only my favorite on their whole discography but also my favorite Power Metal album ever. Also, for a second video on PM debuts, I'd love to see Shaman's Ritual included. It's the band many of the classic Angra members went on to form after they departed, Ritual being not only their debut but also their best record to date. Andre Matos was a very special frontman. My favorite lead singer of all time. R.I.P. Maestro

Out of all the debuts, I think it’s the most fleshed out. A lot of the bands on the list don’t start the best imo, but it’s a debut so understandable. Hoping the video does well since would love to watch you cover more power metal in future and also listen to some more too. I haven’t listened to them yet, but I’ve heard some good things about iron savior if you want a recommendation.
I would definitely split the vid into Euro and US power metal, because Jag Panzer and Queensryche feel kinda out of place here. Would be better alongside Armored Saint, Crimson Glory, Riot, Savatage etc. For part 2 would recommend also Edguy, Avantasia, Nocturnal Rites and perhaps Sonata Arctica. And there should be one more tier above perfection reserved for Lost Horizon's Awakening the world🤘

I probably would’ve swapped Primal Fear’s and Dragonforce’s albums but otherwise pretty solid ranking. Hopefully you rank the second albums for these bands like you did with the thrash ones, cause Primal Fear’s second album, Jaws of Death is a perfect album in my opinion
This may be the most thought out list of a Power Metal ranking I have seen. The only one I would disagree with is Hammerfall but I wouldn't put them at the top. I would say it's at least a good or great but from what you put up higher on yours, I can see why you have it lower.
Please if you can do a 2nd album ranking you can include to add Rata Blanca - Magos, Espadas y Rosas (1990). Its from Argentina. Here the metal scene is huge. We consider our metal scene self sufficient as we have great bands on every genre. I mean if you took in the Brazilians you can also check on us : D

Anyway I think american power metal is almost another sub-genre of heavy metal and in reyrospective Iced Earth knew how to sound fresh and unique in the 90s with Barlow's great vocal range they could sound thrashy and still give you some very power metal choruses and the seeds are in the debut
You should include Virgin Steele they're insanely underrated, their albums Ghost Harvest I & II + Gothic Voodoo Anthems less so as they're in a totally different style but the rest is amazing and their newest album a return to form. Noble Savage, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Invictus, and The House of Atreus are generally considered their best albums and as someone who'd heard all these bands before them, they're way better than anything on this list, Blind Guardian sounds like Nickelback in comparison.
Hey Metal Trenches. I'm curious to see what you think of Symphonic Metal Debuts. In my experience, some can be good while some can be alright. I'm pretty picky about that subgenre, and I bet that you are too.
It's interesting because I love symphonic black and death metal, but just pure symphonic metal with the more operatic vocals generally isn't my thing. I've come across some tuff I've enjoyed though

I would put Helloween mlp as the debut, not full length, but not so short either, it's 2 minutes.And would definitely be at the perfection category, as it's the greatest, most flawless release to date

First albums from tolkki are a different fruit than visions….not comparable at all. Epic debut and related to thrash. Same like walls or jericho. Would be nice to have differences from mainstream albums and the genesis of creation.

Ugh... For you power metal is Italian opera enlivened with electric guitars? Walls of Jericho may not be Helloween's best album, but with it everything started. In fact, Kai Hansen is considered the father of Power Metal, although this album has more speed metal, I don't agree with its place on the list. . And Jag Panzer and Queensryche are definitely not power metal by chance. Everyone has their list, it's obvious, but for me Heading for Tomorrow is the best album of all of them by far.

Riot is severely underrated imo. Think they’re more trad than power, but they’re still awesome.
Love Nocturnal Rites and Riot but their debuts aren’t as strong
