  • ROCKSTAR!
    What the hell does the word even mean anymore in todays world? When I was 17 it meant something! In this video I rant about what a rockstar is to me. There aren’t many left and there are alot of pretenders!

    To me, Rock Stars were in the late '60s, and '70s, Zeppelin, The Stones, Purple, Cooper, and Aerosmith. Pete Townshend. The monoliths of Rock music. Jets, Limos, groupies, and mysterious. Not just popular. They were like gods. Van Halen took it to the 80s. Early Crue, GnR, yeah. But MTV brought the accessibility that took the rock star mystic away and started turning it into what it is today. Reality TV shows and social media, jumping around on stage to tracks. They might be stars but there's no Rock in any of that.

    Bro! Good to see you back!! Sad about Steve Riley. Most of those people that quote that "party like a rock star" line have absolutely no idea what that means. You also hit it on the head with Crue and KISS. Dylan lost a bit of his "mojo" in the early 80s when going through his "born again" phase.

    I had meant to ask if you had any Riot stories? There is very little out there for that era before they broke up in the mid 80's timeframe, before they reformed and had a bit of a musical change more towards a power/speed metal format in the late 80's. I'm a big fan of the first 2 singers (Guy Speranza; Rhett Forrester) along with the style hard rock they had in those early records. People could say Rhett sounded like Blackie Lawless, except Rhett Forrester predated Blackie on released recordings (not counting possible demos Blackie may have had before WASP). There is a great documentary well done by The Metal Voice channel, much respect to those guys for doing that. It seems like those early Riot lineups were kicking ass up there in your hood right around when you began your music/DJ career in about 1979 (if I have that accurate). Mark Reale was such a kickass riffmaster from the word go, and those were some great singers, with great lyrics early on, before they went all fantasy based sword and sorcery. This one writer I caught wrote some funny shit about Rhett, saying "He'd eat Glenn Danzig for breakfast, then use his bones as toothpicks" I thought that was funny. Here is the first part of the Riot doc if you hadn't seen or known about it.

      Good info! Thank you . I don’t have any Riot stories. I saw them live once with Speranza. Great band. They unfortunately fell between the cracks. Thanks for watching 🙏

    Yeah, it's scary what social media has done to rock n roll. Thousands of media templates and no main music television like MTV. I think, after everyone you mentioned dies... there isn't going to be any truly significant music. All the kids listen to 70s, 80s, 90s music. Their shocked at what they hear... in a good way.
    Sadly, yes, Motley is a far cry at what they represented... and Mick splitting is the icing on the cake for me.

      Agree. In 25 years all the classic rockstars and bands will be gone. And you are right, the main music decades that are listened to by young and old are the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. 🤘🙏

    Spot on. The era of the rock star is over, mostly because rock music just isn’t as popular anymore. You still have, and probably always will have, pop stars like Taylor Swift, but there haven’t been any modern day rock stars for a while now.

    I think the description of "rockstar" has taken on a new meaning, involving amenities & luxuries for millennials....anything see as decadent, they use that word to describe it.
    If anyone of late COULD be something resembling the description as we know it, the kid who fronts The Struts (Luke Spiller) could've been it....but 10 years in now, a lack of great songwriting ability & wrong moves brought on by his management or record company have prevented him from reaching the next level....if HE were fronting Queen instead of what they settled on? It might've been different for the poor kid....keep up the great work ✊️😁👍

    Fats Domino was the earliest melodies I could put right along side Motorhead, and when I say right along side, I mean it. Maybe even Hank Williams tunes. Motorhead was Fats Domino played thru multiple Marshall full stacks. A lot of people don't realize this, most musicians do, but just casual fans don't really realize. Fats Domino, Bobby Charles (Robert Charles Guidry from Abbeville Louisiana), Jerry Lee Lewis, The Killer, from Louisiana, Big props to Louisiana LOL. Of course Lubbock TX with Buddy Holly too. I guess the promotional aspect has to do with the popularity phenomenon, which didnt get really big until widespread television, the visual aspect, Elvis Presley with that stiff leg shit. It's pretty wild Bobby Jarzombek the monster hard rock and metal drummer is George Straits touring drummer. It goes to show, if the drummer sucks, the band sucks, no matter what type music

    Great observations here. From what you're saying, "Rock Stars" occupied a sweet spot between the paleo rock & rollers of the first generation (Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Buddy Holly, et al.), and the later musicians of the mid/late 70s and 80s who were like a copy of a copy of a copy, had less sustained popularity, and less authenticity and vigor than previous generations. I can agree with those general criteria. Makes for some interesting questions too, especially thinking about possible exceptions to the rule. Is Axl Rose a rock star? Slash? Kurt Cobain? Lemmy? Metallica? Ringo Starr? Pete Townsend? Angus Young?

    • @beforeiforget1985
      @beforeiforget1985  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for commenting. This topic can be debated endlessly. Slash and Axl def rockstars in their peak years 87-92. Now not so much. Townsend absolutely although the Who need to call it a day. Metallica no. Simply because they took the stance of “we are like our fans”. Same with Cobain. Ringo absolutely by default. He was a Beatle. Angus not really. AC/DC are a great band and very successful band but never the wild rock star types. 🙏

    Great stuff as always.
    I dont disagree w your definition however i do have a looser criteria..simply bc there really isnt anybody worthy after say 1997.
    Therefore the “spotlight/limelight whatever” fades but never really moves
    If you were a platinum level artist that headlined massive tours & are still a household name even on a novelty level you fit the loose criteria of being a “Rock star”.
    If some new wave of Rock suddenly emerges & hits a massive level, perhaps this changes.
    Until then, those who celebrate the “golden era” style of rock/ metal dont really have anything to move onto

    Good video. I’m a big Motörhead fan. Curious about your thoughts on Lemmy. Was he a rockstar or just in his own category? He seemed to live the rock n roll life right until the end.

    • @beforeiforget1985
      @beforeiforget1985  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question . I put Lemmy in his own category: he was metal, punk, rocknroll. A legend. No big sales or money made but he didn’t care about that. It was more about being true to himself and living the life. Thanks for watching 🙏

      Yes! I agree. It was mainly Stevie. But they all lived the rockstar life. Lots of money, sales, adulation and the b st drugs. The key is…..they had the music to back it all up. Without the great songs none of it would have lasted. Thanks for watching! 🙏

    Mike, you and I see eye to eye on a almost 100% of things where entertainment is concerned and this subject isn’t much different but I’m gonna argue with you one ONE item/person….Steven Tyler. Now let me preface this by saying that I LOVE Aerosmith from the first record and even thru the shaky drug addicted stuff and even thru Pump and Get a Grip (which I know many Aerosmith purists hate) but for me Steven Tyler lost his “rock star” status when he tried to go mainstream around the American Idol thing. To me, if you’re gonna call Steve a rock star then you might as well leave the title on Gene and Paul too. Old guys still (for better or worse) hanging on to their glory days. Is it the love of performing live? Is it the need for attention? (*cough*nikki sixx)😆I dunno. Now having said all of this, let me say two words, JOE PERRY! That guy is a legit ROCK STAR! Whether you see him with Aero or the Vampires you are seeing one of the coolest mother truckers on the planet and he’s been that way since the 70’s. He might be sober but he’s still a guitar stud and a legit star! Alice too! He might be born again, he might be married for 40 years but Alice isn’t doing it for any other reason than he loves to perform. To me, that’s part of being a ROCK STAR! But hey, I’m not inside anybody‘s head. Maybe I’m way off?🤷‍♂️Just one guy’s opinion. Great vid, brother! Thanks for sharing!🤘

    • @beforeiforget1985
      @beforeiforget1985  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you!! I know Tyler did American idol but he hasn’t changed who he is . He is still the same Tyler I saw in the 70’s. Gene and Paul have changed DRAMATICALLY. Didn’t get me started! But I agree that Joe Perry is 100% a rock star. One cool fucker for sure! Doing it for the love of it! Alice too! Thanks for watching! 🙏

      @@beforeiforget1985Oh before I forget (see what I did there?😆) I LOVED the bit you did on Black Sabbath! Yes Sabbath was headlining arenas when Ozzy was there the first time but they didn’t really become such an institution until long after he left and people realized just how cool those early records were and how much they influenced future generations! KISS too! When I was in high school (84-88) it was actually uncool to like KISS! Their heyday had come and gone, the makeup was off and they were seen as has beens! It was only almost a decade later when they did the tribute record and the reunion talk came about that it was cool to like KISS again! Maybe that’s why Gene and Paul couldn’t let go? The period between Unmasked and the reunion had some pretty big ups and downs for them! But I digress. Thanks for the talk!🤘
