    I also got the 2015 5k imac back in November 2016 and specced it out. Less then a year later they announce a new one..I have no regrets. There is one thing to keep in mind when it comes to tech it always gets absolete as soon as you get it out the door from the store so that is why I believe to always buy what you need at the moment and forget about what comes next

    Even with hindsight what you spent, including the RAM upgrade, was a smart move, if as you say it performs well enough doing 4k it was the better option. You don't miss what you never had, I'm still gutted about the new MacBook Pros, my daily driver is the mid 2014 13" MBP and was looking forward to last years refresh and was massively disappointed, I currently looking at referbs myself not because of budget but because I don't want the current MBP's.

    • @JSLReview

      hey man! totally hear you on the mbp, I was either going to go with the refurb 5k iMac or a refurb 2015 15 inch MBP. the late 2015 mbp is still a beast and there are some really good deals on them now!

    Point being, play the hand you're dealt and make the best of it.

    Buying an older refurbished Imac from an Apple store, makes huge sense.
    Just look at the price of a brand new Imac, and there is not a huge difference in performance between your model and the latest model.
    There's certainly a big difference in price though.
    Firstly its been checked over by Apple technicians, so you know it will be working as good as new, and secondly, it will be considerably cheaper than a brand new model.
    The thing about Apple as a company, is when you buy refurbished products from them, they are almost as good as a brand new product, but costing less money.
    I bought a refurbished I Phone last year, and it might as well be a brand new item, its been checked and passed as worthy of the Apple name, and there was no visible damage or scratches on the phone.

    The display is gorgeous. That alone makes the computer worth it if you are in front of your computer all day. I have 2 other 5k monitors (dell 2715 and hp) while crisp, the iMac display is still better in my opinion. Also the performance is good. Kaby is not that much over skylake especially since apple throttles them both right now. Just enjoy your iMac. You did the right thing.

    I think you make perfect sense. You really didn't screw up, at least not too bad :) Well, if you REALLY want the new one, I bet you could sell that one and only lose maybe $200 on it? That wouldn't be that bad, all things considered. I waited, and waited, and waited for this new 2017 iMac, but my old Mac Pro is still barely cutting it, so I was able to wait, but it was hard to be patient!
    In roughly 2000 or so, I bought my first Mac, the Mac PowerBook G4 Titanium, top of the line. It was essentially what the MacBook Pro is now. It was seriously like $3700. I had been watching and watching, and there was a VERY clear pattern. Every so often, a new model would come out, and would cost about $300 less than the previous model, and be a little better, too! So, I was ok with that, I knew a newer model would come out, but I went ahead and bought one. About 2-3 months later, when I couldn't return mine, a new model came out, and it was like $1200 CHEAPER! I lost my mind and argued and argued with the store that I bought it from, but couldn't get any kind of refund. THAT was a nightmare!

    Not a bad deal! Be happy with your choice but if it keeps haunting you, maybe you'll still be able to sell it for a fair price. I'm making a 10 year leap... 2007 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo to 2017 27-inch 4.2GHz i7 and still not content. I held out for an affordable 2TB SSD but finally caved for a fast chip and 3TB fusion drive. Here's to the next 5-10 years!

    I think you made the RIGHT decision, which I will qualify shortly. Basically, I’ve owned both of the $1799 base models, the late 2015 version and the new 2017 version. I purchased the 2015 5K on May 27th 2017 because I couldn’t wait until late 2017 when the new models usually come out. I got extremely lucky that Apple released the new models a couple weeks later. So, I packed up my iMac and returned it to the store, then purchased the new $1799 model as soon as it was available. Here are my impressions of the two models.
    Kaby Lake can barely be called a new generation. It’s (maybe) 9% faster than Skylake, primarily due to the increased clock speed. Far more “yawn” than “wow” with this generation. Maybe Intel will wake up, get serious, and release a truly improved 8th Gen now that Ryzen has arrived. Also, the 2017 model has faster RAM, but it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. Perhaps the CPU is using the L1, L2 and SSD very efficiently, so the faster RAM clock isn’t noticeable (??). Furthermore, I don’t need 40 GB/sec transfer speeds so the TB3 isn’t that big a deal for me. I would gladly take TB2 if I could save $400!
    That said, there are two areas where the 2017 model is significantly better than 2015. One is the inclusion of a Fusion drive in the base model. The small 24 GB (actually 28 per System Info) of SSD in the FD makes a BIG Difference in the performance of the machine, relative to the 7200 rpm HDD in the 2015. However, you mentioned that you have a Fusion Drive, so this is moot for you.
    The most significant improvement to the 2017 iMacs is in the Graphics cards. Apple finally switched from using mobil versions to using true desktop video cards. To illustrate the difference, the Radeon Pro 570 which comes in the base $1799 iMac has equivalent performance to the best video card available in 2015 (Radeon M 395X w/ 4 GB VRAM). The top card (Pro 580) is comparable to the Nvidia 1070 from what I’ve read. Very good cards overall.
    All things considered, I believe you made the right choice. Since you already have the Fusion Drive (very important), I would have done the same thing … save $400 and use that money for more RAM, SSD upgrade or external HDD. Unless you Really need a great video card (most people don’t), you definitely made the right decision.
    Sincerely,
    Jeff

    • @jeffcicchino2688
      @jeffcicchino2688 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, meant external GPU (EGPU), not external HDD. Assuming Skylake can run High Sierra and utilize an external GPU. Also, just out of curiosity, why do gamers need 60+ FPS when playing games? I believe TV and movies are at 26 FPS or something like that, which appears pretty fluid to me when I watch. I was always curious why someone would need huge FPS performance. (Obviously, I don't play games.)

    • @JSLReview
      @JSLReview  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff, great insight and appreciate the comment man! It's pretty cool that you were in that rare predicament of truly being able to have both and compare - and you're right, the graphics card is a major upgrade, something I didn't speak to in the video as much as I should have considering that I primarily need the computer for video editing. thanks again for the comment and thanks for watching!

    • @jeffcicchino2688
      @jeffcicchino2688 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still think you made the right choice. Comparing video cards of your build (M9 390 card) vs the $1800 2017 model (Pro 370), there is only a 28% performance difference. The performance of the Pro 570 card is almost identical to that of the M9 395X (top card in 2015 model). Benchmarks comparing the two show only a 28% (average) difference between the M390 and the M395X. I checked a number of sites and thought "barefeats.com/imac5K15.html" did a pretty good analysis. Looked at 7 benchmarks (3 games & 4 general GPU). Differences were +20-36% for gaming and +12-37% for others.
      So, unless you do a Lot of 4K video editing or gaming, I seriously doubt you would notice the difference. The $500 you saved can be spent on RAM, which will probably help you a lot more than a 28% faster video card. If/when you do start 4K editing, and it's taking too long, then you can switch to the next iMac upgrade (2018? 2019?). Those will probably have a significantly better CPU. Kaby Lake is a lame update, Skylake was supposedly a much better refresh. Hopefully CannonLake will be truly impressive (nothing like some competition to wake people up!). Enjoy your iMac, you did right.

    • @jeffcicchino2688
      @jeffcicchino2688 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some additional thoughts on why you made the right decision. In my mind, there are 2 big reasons for buying an iMac. #1) it’s an Apple product, which means you can expect years of hassle-free operation #2) the 5K Retina display. You got both, for a substantial discount, which you can parley into your future purchase.
      I believe the next refresh (late 2018?) will be the upgrade you really want. CannonLake should be awesome. The graphics will be even better, and it will probably have improvements to the I/O, RAM and storage. A suggestion…don’t spend too much on extra RAM now (16 GB is fine). Save up for the next update and get the SSD option. FD is great, but you can use TB3 and external HDD for extra storage.
      Note: this is my 1st Apple computer after 20+ years of owning/using PCs. I had been considering switching to Mac for years, and when my laptop died in May, it was my opportunity to change. My primary reason for choosing a Mac was stability & reliability. I was just so, SO tired of the daily Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> Task Manager -> Shut Down routine. Or, having to restart due to lockup. Or, the incessant Windows updates. Or, the “windows creep” of the PC getting slower and slower with time. My iPhone & iPad generally work flawlessly and I wanted the same robustness in my computer. The other reason…the display! The 27” Retina is amazing, truly a joy and wonder to use. The display alone goes a long way toward justifying the cost of an iMac. Similar sized 5K IPS displays are over a grand and don’t even come with a computer.

    Why one piece iMac 4k or iMac Pro 5k can not increase more refresh rate than *60 Hz?* I think the *heat issue* for computer screens with higher resolution and higher refresh rate. 😎 I bought Samsung 3D HDTV *120 Hz* in 2010 for *watching slow & fast motion picture & games is very smooth.* HDTV or 4k TV with higher refresh rate up to 240 Hz is ok because it does not consume more power for heavy computing like pro computers do. Some smart phones have very high 960 fps video for super smooth slow motion.

    You did the right thing. A thousand dollars ain’t something someone on a budget can just pass by nor ignore.
    I just purchased a late 2015 iMac “the one in the middle as far as specs” and having never owed an Apple computer I got to say just for the monitor the $900 dollars I paid was worth the price,I read that I can beef it with more ram and SSD if I choose so but I’ll just do more Ram,I’m happy with the rest. Btw,I see you have the Mojave update on yours,have you had any issues with it? I been hearing crashing problems and things not opening or slowing down is there any issues you having? Just curious!
    I enjoy your videos 👍🏼

    Based on what I read/saw/heard on the internets, for a lonnng time leading up to WWDC most folks had agreed there was very likely going to be a spec bump from Skylake to CabyLake for the iMacs. But the word was it wasn't going to be a spectacular speed hike. From the reviews though, it seems they got a much bigger performance increase than was expected. I got my 2015 model shorty after they came out, so I really can't complain at all, it's awesome for video and photoshop with all the power I need (AE the possible exception). But sure, I'm a bit jealous of anyone getting a new on now, especially with the thunder 3 ports as you mentioned - the EGPU possibilities down the road on that are exciting.
    NOTE ABOUT SECOND MONITOR: You say at around 5:38 you can't hook top a second monitor to your 2015?? Eh, are our sure?? I have an older iMac hooked up to my 2105 as wicked a second screen right now. Kinda crazy I know, but I was keeping the old imac anyway, so it was cheaper than buying a second monitor. Just £8 for the MiniDisplay cable on Amazon as I recall. Also 2 x 27" screens on my desk looks pretty sick :P
    But anyway, I'm pretty sure you can hook up most monitors to the 2015 using the thunderbolt port with minidisplay cable, and you still have the other one left for drives, which you could daisy-chain a bunch if you had to. Just sayin'.

    If I could go back in time I wouldn’t buy a iMac for 3.2k €, no frikkin way, I would show Apple a 🖕 🖕 and build a water cooled monster that I could upgrade anytime + buy a nice 4K display. Now I have to take down the display if I want to upgrade my ssd, screw that, I should have known better. I upgraded to 32gb ram right away and saved 400€ not buying it from Apple. Apple Computers have become a frikkin scam and people rant about it for a good reason. All the programs I use the most beside Logic Pro, like pro tools or Sibelius are also available for windows, in other words there is no real reason anymore for me to stick with the way overrated but poorly performing Macs.

    @JSL Review I wouldn't be too concerned about external graphics because you can do that currently but you'd need an external monitor. Thunderbolt 2 can still run external graphics (20gb/s vs 40gb/s bandwidth compared to TB3). Since you can't run the internal monitor on the iMac with an external gpu anyways (TB2 or TB3), I wouldn't be too concerned but you'd get the added benefit of being able to do graphically intensive tasks better.

    In regard to your comment that "Apple is always a little bit overpriced", you're wrong. I challenge you to go on any PC manufacturer's website and configure a PC with EXACTLY the same components and features. If you're doing it right, you'll find that the PC is almost always more expensive. That's because of economies of scale.

    It wouldn't be as hard a decision to make to bite the bullet and jump on a current iMac if Target Display Render supported didn't get discontinued by Apple. If still supported, you could use the iMac until it outlives its main purpose and continue to use the nice 5K display as a secondary monitor or even a primary monitor. In previous years, the thought was that Apple could not support TDR because of insufficient bandwidth with TB2. well, with current iMacs equipped with TB3, TDR still isn't supported.. maybe there's still some technical limitation causing Apple not to be able to provide TDR support anymore, but I don't think there's any explanation as to what that could be.

    Nice display with the Imac but low cpu speccs, even the 2017 imac. 2017 was the year of Zen, the year of Ryzen. 8 cores/16 thread run circles around imacs in workloads (4k editing). Kabylake was outdated in the year it launched. Ryzen and coffeelake are where it's at. Imac is way behind, again.
    Edit: ofc its software that makes imac special. I just think apple should give its customers state of the art products. I am curious about apples own precessors. Maybe then imac gets on the same power lvl as main stream pc builder.

    If I’m honest for the price you paid for the 2015, you might as well just wait until the new release IMAC but considering how it wasn’t confirmed at the time and you was on a timer to purchase the 2015 MAC it’s basically 50/50. At least now you know when you purchase your next IMAC in 3/4 years you’ll learn in saving, and looking at the Apple market etc.

    I think I got basically the same set up as you and also came from a decent older MBP, only to be shocked at the lack of performance when using one programme in particular: Capture One Pro.
    At first it just felt slower but with each upgrade more issues occurred and these were common for many people, the blame was placed at Apple's door and the underpowered graphics card, happily C1Pro recently did a major upgrade and initial indications suggest a tangible improvement in performance and more importantly the glitches seem to have disappeared, so in short after 1-2 years I am finally thinking I don't regret buying it!

    Probably done the right thing if it will do what you asked of it for now and once it doesn't that shiny 2017 model will be cheap too. However I'm debating either a 2017 21.5 or the 27 and also Wacom 27HD so no way could I afford another one in a few years. It really depends on how geeked out you can get by fancy keynotes. I used a 2011 imac for 5 years before I switched. The imac was great but all the advances in new technology like usb 3 and SSDs made me wish the iMac was upgradeable and I couldn't replace the computer without getting rid of the monitor in the process so I switched to PC and built my own and I love the fact that I can add and replace stuff over time as my needs change. Love the iMac as a product but I think it's too limiting for my tastes.

  • @JCole78
    @JCole78 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This comment is less relevant to when you made the video, but very relevant to prices now for any one looking to save as much as they can. I just bought two refurbished iMacs. The first was the newer base model 21.5 4k i5 with a 1tb SATA, and 8gb of RAM for $1,171.59 after Apple Care, taxes, and express shipping. The new price would have been $1,364.76. It's primary function is as the family computer for school work and things like streaming videos, so it didn't need to be a power house. even with the Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 GPU it handles 4k videos on TH-cam really well. The second I bought for myself for photo and video editing. It's the 27 5k with the i7 4.2, 16gb of RAM, 8gb video card, and 2tb Fusion after Apple Care, taxes, and express shipping it was $2,626.79. This would have been $3,076.76 brand new. The best part about it is that over the last few years I've bought a couple of iPod Touches, a couple of iPhones, and now these iMacs all refurbished, and all looked brand new. Shoot I paid less for the 5k iMac total than a brand new one before taxes. The best part about buying refurbished from Apple is that you can get the Apple Care coverage.

    Nah you did all right. Even if I had the money, I wouldn't get the first gen of Apple computers. The first retinas and the first retinas with the touch bars had so much trouble that people had to return or have them replaced. Plus Apple is always incrementally upgrading them every half year. You're always going to wonder why you didn't wait just a few more months if you just want the latest and greatest.

    If your computer does what you need it to do then don't fret it. iMac pros are damn expensive.. My iMac is 4 years old and it came with a 3TB fusion drive and the hard drive failed last month so I had it replaced with a 2TB SSD and the 120GB SSD that they had paired with the mechanical hard drive is still in there. The Fusion drive does speed it up but it isn't as fast as a total SSD. I have a speced out late 2013 iMac and it runs great.

    +JSL Review You've got a wonderful mac there...I allways buy refurbished Macs that is 2-3 years old because it's good for the environment and of course for your wallet. The last one I'm using now is a 15" MacBook Pro Retina with excellent specs. I edit and render 4K videos without any problems...and I payed half the price to a new MacBook Pro with the "same" specs. So I think that buying older refurbished macs is the way to go, and don't build up that "must have" feeling as soon they present the newer models. As long as the mac can do what you need it for, and do it well, why buy a "monster" with a potential you maby don't need or will use?...
    It's like buying a Ferrari/Porsche/Lambourghini with the potential to race the shit out of any car, but in real life you still have to follow the speed limits...and my old Toyota runs as fast as a Lambourghini in 50km/h :) So be happy with your iMac, wait another 2 years and then buy a refurbished 2017 iMac...for half the price.

    Not a bad purchase at all bro! I'm investing in the 2017 iMac 5K, but that's only because I haven't needed to upgrade until this point. I would have waited for the iMac Pro, but considering it's base price, I decided to not even bother waiting. The specs onthe iMac Pro are definitely an upgrade and it is a MONSTER of a computer, but for the stuff I'll be using my computer for (primarily music production), the 2017 iMac 5K has more than enough to support that. The iMac Pro is really for those that want insane power in their iMac. Otherwise, the iMac that Apple has available right now and the power that it can exert is generally more than sufficient.

    JSL, Thought I would add to my earlier post One of the big things that irritates me today about youtube and the video editor crowd is: I went to school for broadcast production, creating professional television content, and also touching on some concepts of film I learned to edit on G4 / G5 macs, and a personal late 2006 white MacBook. I started on Final cut studio 6, and Final cut express 4.Not only did I learn how to utilize small space and older hardware, but I created a full documentary for my final project. check out the video called "What we do" on my channel. Putting aside I don't do much video production right now, I graduated with an A.S. certification in broadcast production inspite of dealing with physical disabilities. I have a love / hate relationship with TH-cam. On one hand it's a great source of content and there are some genuinely gifted creative people who produce content. On the flipped side there are those who throw stuff up that I feel discredit those of us who took the time to professionally learn the skills. Basically in the end the people stuck on specs are promoting video editing by their own standards, not anything professional. There is all kinds of content, and it doesn't all require the same setups.

I was thinking about upgrading my late 2012 27 i mac to a 27 5 k 2017 but my late 2012 27 inch i mac runs pretty well and not having a 5k display retina isn't that much of a big deal the text and pixels are still pretty sharp at times your eye can't see that many pixels anyway. I paid about the same price for it brand-new about the same as the new 2017 27 5k i mac. to me thats a pretty good deal for a 5k when they first launched 3 years ago they were nearly 3000 bucks.

    Hey Jason, Was thinking about this video, after getting some of the feedback from you on the other videos of yours I've seen and left comments on.
    I did some testing today of my available resources earlier today, both hardware, and software and found I have some good tools to get started with. I have the 720p facetime camera for now (for video), and I have a wireless headset with mic (for a mic). I also own a license to Telestream's ScreenFlow whcih is a video editor, and screen casting software that allows multiple recording inputs at once. Plus the Apple pro apps, and a few third party tools such as FFMpeg based tools.
    One other thing I failed to mention was not only do I have the video skills, but I also am good with audio, and I also have a background in music, though no music degrees. So, I really have a lot to bring to the table in many areas.
    True, we both got sucked into the hype for a bit, but stepping back and looking at the wider picture, those who are doing the benchmarks and raving about specs tend to only be focusing on a tiny faction of what a computer can do, in the broad spectrum. I've read a few of the other comments here, and tend to agree with them and found them to also be good encouragement to you as well.
    One thing I wanted to close this comment with was: As I commented on tour camera video with some of the goals I have in mind, I have a lot of stuff I want to do, but right now am not physically, or financially set up to do So, I think for now, focusing on what I can do currently, will be the best step in knowing what I will be able to do later on and what I will need then.

    As a guy wanting to make films on a budget, you do with what you can afford, your I Mac gets the tasks done, as long as it does what you need it to, your fine.

    Enjoyed the video - thanks. And yeah, I got the new iMac (i7, maxed) since my late 2009 lost it's GPU (works in safe/restricted mode). Thing is I know I get another good amount of years out of it. You paid less up front, but likely have to invest sooner again. Either way - you do this for your channel and living (?maybe) and it's all good :) Good luck to you!

      thanks for the comment man! haha though this channel is still definitely a hobby, I'm a stickler for quality and efficiency - but the deal was too good to pass up I guess. Hope you're enjoying your 5k imac as much as I am! thanks for watching!

      I still have my late 2009 iMac and the only issues I had with it so far were GPU too - got it repaired a few years ago and no issues since. running 8 years soon. Agree with what you said.

    As ling as it fits your needs, for the price you got the imac.... shut up and enjoy. I'm not disappointed at all.

    I don't see the problem, you got a great deal and you can wait to upgrade the 2018/19 model for not much more $.

    I planned on just saving a bunch of money, watch the keynote, then wait a few months until the price is lowered a bit and went in person and bought the new iMac.
