    Parts I used:
    Intel i7-7700K CPU - snazzy.fm/7700k
    Crucial MX300 2TB SSD - snazzy.fm/mx300
    PC4-19200 260-pin RAM - snazzy.fm/imacram
    OWC Thermal Sensor for SSD - snazzy.fm/owcsensor
    iMac Display Adhesive Kit - snazzy.fm/adhesivekit
    SSD Bracket - snazzy.fm/hddbracket
    iMac Opening Tool - snazzy.fm/imacwheel
    Footnote #1: I actually bought the mid-grade model. At the time, I wasn’t sure the CPU coolers were the same across all 27” models. I have since learned that they are; so if you buy the cheapest 5K iMac, you can do all the upgrades I mention in this video without issue.
    Footnote #2: This is not an instructional disassembly video. I recommend checking the guides on iFixit. They are well illustrated-provide adequate caution and warning for tricky areas-and have a community section where people provide advice. At the time of this video, there is no updated guide for the 2017 iMac; however, it's very similar to the 2014-2015 A1419 model. The only big difference is the screw placement on the motherboard. Just take your time finding all of the screws (one is hidden through the gold hole in the middle of the board) and you'll be fine.
    Footnote #3: A little drama that wasn't included in the video is that the first time around, the CPU got bumped out of the socket when I screwed in the cooler, so the CPU wasn't seated correctly and the computer didn't boot. Upon disassembling the machine again, I saw the CPU was out of the socket and partially bent. I bent the CPU back (silicon bends easily without damaging, luckily), reinserted it into the socket, and was more careful when I tightened the CPU cooler the second time. It's easy to wiggle the CPU out of place when installing the cooler, so be careful-and if it feels too hard to tighten the CPU socket, stop-something is wrong.
    Footnote #4 - My machine's GeekBench results: browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/3...
    The 27" 5K iMac is a good computer for many; however, to users that want high-end specs, Apple charges way too much money. Snazzy Labs pulls apart a base model iMac, upgrades the CPU, SSD, and RAM; showing the world the best iMac that Apple doesn't sell! Get the world's best iMac configuration for $2,000 less than what Apple charges.

    This video took weeks to plan and make. Excited to finally show it to you! It turned out even better than I expected. Please let me know what you think of the new ad integration. I tried to find a happy medium for me, the brand, but most importantly; you, the viewer. Let me know if I've succeeded or what I need to work to improve. Stay snazzy!

      I think that the ad integration is very well done. Not too obtrusive, yet informative and in-depth enough for me to be interested in the product. 10/10

      Snazzy Labs i think apple uses 7700 not the 7700k which would likely explain why your cpu performs better

      Some of us system builders just prefer sleek hardware and the OSX platform! I still build PCs, but I switched to Mac for my primary computer in '07 because Apple under Steve Jobs was pure magic. Back then, you could also customize and mod them much easier. Cook is leaving a bit to be desired in terms of value and innovation, though... :-(

    SUPER cool video dude! I thought it would be awesome but this turned out even better.
    The geekbench score for your 7700k seems pretty normal to me? .. (My stock unit gives - 5782 / 20169)

    • @snazzy
      @snazzy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Is that on your iMac? I admittedly don't have a loaded iMac on hand, so I a) went off of the "average benchmark score" for all of the 2017 fully-loaded 7700K iMac's tested on the GeekBench browser, and b) asked a viewer with a loaded iMac to do the test (he got 18,790). Your score is pretty good; about the same as mine. I don't know why the average is so low. Software related maybe? It isn't the RAM (because I yanked that and tested with the stock kit and was just under 20,000 (so not much slower)), and as you know, thermals in GeekBench don't get anywhere near the thermal throttling ceiling, so it's not that either. I'm flummoxed. LOL.

  • @stonelark

    Great video, Snazzy Labs! If you're only adding a secondary drive (no CPU upgrade), you can do it without removing any circuit boards. I used this video to add drive to a late 2015 27” Retina 5K iMac (Skylake i7 4.0 GHz), with only 256GB flash SSD factory-installed. The drive-only shopping list is: drive bay adapter, OWC heat sensor (which came with monitor adhesive), SATA data/power cable, and ifixit pizza knife. You only need to remove the left speaker and fan to access the motherboard SATA data and power connections. Reach underneath the edge of the board, and press in the cable connectors (use a small mirror). Route the cable behind the fan mount stands, to the new drive. You may need to loosen and move the right speaker to access the bay mounting screws unless you have tiny-trump hands.

      Indeed, but seeing how just opening the damn thing in the first place is such a hassle (and a one-time operation, unless you're willing to waste sticker sets), isn't it wiser to just gut the entire thing and swap as many internal components as necessary and possible? Plus, Apple's thermal paste application (and quality) is usually crap (as you can see from the video; it's spread all over the place, even outside of the copper part of the heatsink, and extremely dry even when new); even if you weren't swapping the CPU, replacing said paste whenever you have the chance is just good practice.

    silicon lottery only comes into play when you start overclocking, the difference in score is almost certainly coming from there 3 factors. 1: the ram you got for this mod runs at a higher speed with better timings then the ram that apple uses. 2: the Polaris GPU you have will hit a slightly higher boost clock then the GPU that was used for the stock mac test. 3: the thermal paste you used on your new 7700k is better then the stuff apple uses by default and that allows you to hold max boost clock for more time.

    • @NOrlando952
      @NOrlando952 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      pike RDM I️ wouldn’t be surprised if Apple bought Lower binned chips but they use the 7700 not 7700k the k has a higher base and boost even when non overclocked so I️ think that is why

      I have a 1680x1050 monitor
      Still runs strong since 9 years
      1080p 144Hz isn't a worth jump for me so i will keep my monitor 15 years or so until 2k / 4k 144Hz get affordable. That means mid grade gpu like a 1060 for 250 bucks should be good enough to Run a 300$ 1440p Monitor with 144 Hz
      So total 550$ for nearly ultra gaming 1440p 144hz.
      Today a 1070 alone is 400 $
      And the monitor is 530 $
      Thats overpriced as fuck

    Great video. Perfect length and super informative. I'm looking to potentially upgrade my iMac as well so this is really helpful. What I'm wondering though is, would this work with an 8 core processor? The upcoming iMac Pros are going to have processors starting at 8 core, but I don't want to pay the ridiculous price that Apple is going to charge for even the base model. I've got a 2013 iMac now with an older i7 processor, and it would be killer if I could just upgrade it to an 8 core.

    8% boost sounds like the gain from superior memory timings from RipJaw sticks you chose. I got a 6-10% boost on all benchmarks on 2016 iMacs by using faster 2133Mhz CL11 HyperX SODIMMS that had optimized jedec profiles. I also tested similar spec'd Ballistix sticks, but they didn't work. Ballistix performed worse than stock, actually

    • @snazzy

      I thought this may be the case, but the clock-speed is 2400MHz on both kits. I actually went so far as to put in the old memory to see if that was the case, and I was still benching nearly 20,000 on GeekBench. So I don't know what is up... It's weird. LOL.

    5:37 The loaded 5K iMac 27" actually uses an i7 7700, not a 7700K. The K really just means it's good for overclocking, but macOS has quite limited overclocking ability, it doesn't matter.

    I bought the same computer and basically did the same thing. I had never seen this video until much later. I didnt go so far as to install the i7. Too scary. The reason I also did this was because the HDD in the iMac was WAY TOO slow and completely outdated when I purchased my 2017 iMac. The only reason I purchased this computer is because of the Retina screen. Still one of the best. Thanks for the video! Enjoyed it. Maybe one day Ill get around to installing the i7-7700k. But just installing a SSD made the computer MUCH faster and usable. Please keep the Vids coming. Two Thumbs up!

      So, did you buy a fusion and replace it with the SSD-- or Apple's SSD, then... add another SSD? I don't understand why someone would even pay Apple's price for a small SSD, if they were just going to replace it with another third party SSD. Why not get a fusion drive then take that out? Isn't that cheaper?

    • @snazzy

      They use the 7700 in the base high-end configuration, but they use the 7700K in the loaded configuration. With Kaby Lake, the K variant is clocked 700 MHz higher even without OC, so Apple just runs the unlocked CPU at base-clock.

    • @adamsaint2890
      @adamsaint2890 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's quite feasible due to the turbo boost function being disabled if the CPU gets too hot. So better thermal paste might transfer heat more efficiently. Downside of this might be that the more heat the CPU is able to dump into the cooler, the less temp differential is available to cool the GPU, so you might find that the GPU throttles more quickly in workloads that stress GPU and CPU.
      I don't think that there are "runt" 7700K's given to Apple though. At or below their max turbo clock, they should all perform the same. The silicon lottery applies to anything above max turbo which won't be applicable here.

      If you watch any video about the 2017 iMac's you would understand, as explained in this video the 5K screen is almost impossible to buy elsewhere and if you can find it it's outrageously expensive, additionally the proprietary NVME SSD technology in these Mac's is some of the fastest you can currently buy- if you look into buying the same speed PCIe SSD for your Windows machine it is actually about $40 cheaper to get the upgrade from Apple than from a different company. Additionally, if you buy the base amount of ram and upgrade it yourself, which is allowed by apple through a port on the back, then you dont have to pay double the price for Apple's RAM. All in all it is almost impossible to mimic the exact specs of the iMac if you do those things mentioned above with a comparable PC including the price of the monitor. Sure, you could just not get a 5K screen and save boatloads of money, but that isn't the point of the apples to apples argument.

      Different board is needed. There are some articles of people saying if you can program board bios your self and figure out the pin change/layout which is exactly the same but certain pins where converted to power distribution or changed to a different job. So if you knew what you where doing and spend 100 hours tinkering you may be able to get it to runing. In all honesty though it would be wasted effort 7700k is near the performance of 8700 minus core count

      1stfloorguy Don't forget the imac's pityfull cooler could never cool down an 8700k at load so per core performance would suffer.

      Vincent Ryu Nope apple will never put i7 8700K in iMac doesn't have good cooler so the cores would be die in while use it in long time at 80 -70C

      Yeah ,and get the parts that are not broken into the new imac,and the price of part replacement if needed probably will cost less the to fix the computer even with warranty.

      Opening the machine does not void the warranty. This kind of misinformation is annoying at best
