    I appreciate the amount of preparation and thoughtful planning put into these videos. You do a fantastic job of both explaining and showing without any hint of frustration. So many video makers put themselves forward as experts when they are learners at best. You sir are both an an expert learner and explainer. Your build videos inspire a tremendous amount of confidence. Its very much appreciated.

      I love this comment!!!!! It summarizes the overall approach of this channel. You will not find videos here that are based on my professional experiences. It's all about taking something that needs to be done, educating yourself on how someone (hopefully you) would accomplish it, planning your attack, and then tackle it. I love to learn and do not fear making mistakes. Learning through successes and mistakes is very valuable. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback! Have fun with all of your future project !!!!!

    My friend, I am a 50 year experienced mechanic. A senior citizen now! I have torn apart engines, transmissions, differentials, etc. -- and have viewed a ton of TH-cam videos just to see how technology has changed . Most have guys with cigarettes in their mouthes; horrible loud music in the background; horrible video quality (and sound); and lots of poor usage of the English language! But you my friend, missed your calling! I have viewed you LM7 rebuild -- EXCELLENT. And now this -- DOUBLE EXCELLENT! You should consider making video "how to's" as a career. For you students-in-learning out there --- watch these videos, as they are a valuable tool to learn. You cannot find this quality of learning in a classroom! Thank you Mr. YouCanDoIt2...

      Joe, totally agree....I followed the man's video's step by step for my own AX15 build. Mine once broken down had a trashed front bearing but I went ahead with a full rebuild. I can rebuild a 4.0L inline six engine in my sleep but a first rebuild of an AX15...came out great considering the videos....
      Post rebuild...shifts gear to gear with ease with no "About to crash" from trashed front bearing... Surprised my AX15 lasted as long as it did. 280K miles. I just accepted the grinding of the front bear...

    This is by far the most detailed and easy to understand walkthrough I've found for rebuilding an AX15. I was bummed when I found out that all the pictures were gone from "Mean Max's" excellent writeup on Jeep Forum, but very pleased to find this. I just pulled mine from my XJ and will be tearing it apart as soon as my bearing splitter comes in the mail. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

    I have been inside many transmissions and you could have not taken it anywhere and got a better job done. Only video here that is worth watching on rebuilding one of these. I cringe when I have watched others videos ( don't even clean cases or parts) real jack legs but you did the most professional job I have seen here. Nice video everyone wanting to rebuild there AX15 should watch this and see how to do it right ! Regards William

    Excellent videos!!! There’s so many videos on here with unnecessary opinions and other “distractions” this series had none, I really appreciate that and learned a lot. After researching about the 2 different types of syncros, home plate and angled, it was very contradicting, I had home plate style through out my AX 15, my rebuild kit came with home plate style for 1, 2, and 5th, and angled for 3 and 4. I am pleased to report that the transmission works great, with the different type of syncros, from what I read the angled type are a new style that were introduced I believe in 99, but are backwards compatible. So far as the 5th gear "upgrade" I did not do it, as my 5th gear worked fine, and am a believer of if it's not broke don't fix it. Could never find a reason to change this gear out.I want to thank you again for taking the time to make this video, it was very helpful.I actually took my time doing this rebuild and it was very enjoyable, I am now looking for people who need their AX15 rebuilt and offering them some help

      Thank you for posting this comment! You know the struggle of the kit vs what came out for 3rd/4th gear. This clarifies it! Ill use both the angle cut synchros for both 3rd and 4th gear despite the old ones were one angle and one home plate shape. Which leaves that small home plate for 5th!

    So I had a question for you I haven't been able to find the information on.
    I have a 91 YJ I'm about to tackle this rebuild on. (Your video gave me the confidence thank you!)
    What is the purpose of the upgraded 5th gear? Is it just taller and gives more speed with less engine spin for highway?
    Does the 91 variant of this already have that?

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks and glad you enjoyed the video series. To be honest, at the time of my restoration, I searched and could bot find any details on what the 5th gear upgrade included. After not coming up with any details, I still thought it would be crazy not to do it since I had the trans open and it was mentioned on several forums. Cheers! Mike

    I'm rebuilding my AX-15 and noticed at 24:36, your rear/adapter housing doesn't have the plastic oil receiver tube (chrysler p/n 83500646). After some googling, looks like it's been used going back to 1984, so probably wasn't an AX-15 part added later.

      Did you install the bearing between those shafts correctly. Do they move freely when you just held them in your hand. Each time you add something, make sure you test that part just as a sanity check.

      Your swap sounds interesting. Make sure you also use the AX15 Service Manual (linked below my video). I believe I would do you a disservice by recommending Brands of parts. This was my first Tranny I believe the final video in the series lists all of the parts that I used (at the end). I did not see any quality issues with the parts that I used. Cheers and best of luck with your project!!!!!

      I'm pretty sure, at any time, you can access the linkages through the shift tower. You do want it in neutral when you install and insert the shift lever.

      Thanks! It is actually a very rewarding project. I spent $426 in parts which as the videos showed included Master Rebuild Kit, 5th Gear Update, Reverse Idler Gear, Reverse Drive Gear, and Redline MT-90 Gear Oil. If you download the Manual and follow the steps you should be good to go. The originally listed GL5 Gear Oil has since been changed back to GL4 Gear Oil due to the issue of the GL5 Oil and the Synchros.

    Great video series, thanks for going to the effort to do it. I pulled the trans out of my 91 Wrangler a few weeks ago and I'm about to start the project. Like you, I've never been inside a transmission but do consider myself capable of doing it. I have all the docs printed out, containers to catalog all the parts in the correct order, etc. One thing that will be new to me is pressing parts off and on. If you have any tips for that, I'll certainly appreciate it. Also, since I'll be purchasing one, was wondering what size of press I need to get. Any suggestions? Thanks again for the for the videos.

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AWESOME!!!! I was also new to the vertical press. I purchased mine with the project in mind. I tried to use it on a BMW Subframe and just couldn't get things to fit. My Press is a 12 Ton Harbor Freight unit. I made a wooden jig that I found indispensable. You can see it in almost all of the Press footage. It is (2) 4x4s that are 11 inches long held together with (2) 2x4s creating a 5.5 inch gap. Beyond that you will need a bearing separators. I have a few and cannot recall which ones I used for this. This is a very rewarding project!!!! Have fun with it!

    • @notso1973
      @notso1973 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @notso1973

      After several delays, I finally got started on the project and got everything torn down and gears pressed back on their shafts. I wanted to mention that getting the 2nd gear off was pretty difficult and in fact I damaged some of the teeth and had to replace the gear. I was beginning to think the press wouldn't get it off but finally did, I think it was pretty much maxed out though. Not sure why it was so tough. Everything else came off pretty easily and the new 2nd gear went back on without much difficulty. I was certain I would never get things back on within the required tolerances, but going very slow seemed to do the trick. I'm now in the process of putting it all back together and hope to be finished this weekend. Thanks again for the videos, they were indispensable.

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad that worked out for you! And just so you know... I made a mess out of my "cheapy" bearing pullers as well. I think that I only used about 90% of the ability of my 12ton HF vertical press. While this was a tough (strength not mental) project... It was very satisfying to finish with the feeling that once back together, I am 100% confident that it is correct!!!! Cheers and enjoy yours.... I know that I am going to enjoy mine!!!! Mike

      @UCanDoIt2Mike  ปีที่แล้ว

      NOT based on experience, but based on logic.... These units heat up and cool down. I would feel more comfortable with a gasket that has some flex to it. I'm thinking An RTV Gasket Maker by itself, or if you have the paper Gasket, I would use it and apply a thin layer of RTV Gasket Maker on both sides to create a flexible / Glued seal should be better than paper gasket alone. Cheers! Mike

    I know this is an older video in your series of project rowdy, and I’m in a similar spot with my own LS-powered Jeep restoration. As always, great videos of the AX15. Did you decide to use the Novak Adapters plate or the Bell housing from Advance Adapters? Just wondering. Looking forward to more videos!

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bob... To be honest, I haven't made that decision yet. I have circled through that research several times over the past year. I actually was looking at it last week. The Advanced Adapters solution appears to be less expensive, but I was leaning towards the Novak solution only because it just uses that adapter plate and standard GM bell housing. I love the look of the Novak items... but they sure are proud of them $$$$. The Novak solution would allow me to video and provide a solution that is more universal to my viewers... but might not be MY best solution. Your thoughts????

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a tough call isn’t it? I talked to a rep at Novak today who was very helpful. I’m leaning towards the Novak option just because the GM bellhousing and clutch control options are more universal. Also, I like the design of the Novak engine mounts over the advanced adaptors. I hope to mock-up my drivetrain in Mid Feb and I’ll post a video of the process. Maybe that will help if you are still undecided. Your videos have been a great resource for me, thanks for all the hard work.

      The most popular GM bellhousing that I have found is the 3899621. What do you think is the best way to source a good used one? Amazon/Ebay have Reproduction ones. Not sure if Savage Yards would still have them available. I might call a couple of yards and see what the process is.

    • @BobWilson84
      @BobWilson84 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Novak did mention the best GM bellhousing for their kit is the “standard truck housing” and not the car housing. They also offer their own in-house model for $300 which is just around $100 more than the generic new equivalent. I know around here prices for the used car housings are around $100, and the truck versions seem to be much harder to find.

      Hey, better late than never... I posted a video of my AX15 - 5.3 V8 installation with Novak Research Components. I highly recommend their parts. Let me know if you have any questions!! Good Luck, and talk soon.

    I have a question why would a ax15 not shift gears.

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming the transmission is in "pre-rebuilt" status... Something breaks inside (Tooth, bearing, or any small part), it could get wedged near the Shift sleeves locking it from engaging/disengaging. It could be something broken or miss-aligned at the base of the Shift lever. It all depends on what works and what doesn't.

    Good video which rebuild kit do you recommend

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a question that I can easily answer. You should not buy a rebuild kit until your machinist has determined any oversize machining that needs to take place due to the current condition of your engine. I have a good relationship with my machinist and once he determined where my engine would end up, he worked with his supplier to customize a “kit” with all the correct size bearings and such. A similar process is what I would recommend to you.

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was a very fun project. Learned a lot and it was very rewarding. In all of the research that I did at the time, I could not ever find a reference as to what the 5th gear upgrade actually did. I just saw where it was regularly offered by several vendors. I thought since I was in there, I would swap it out too. Cheers. Have fun with yours.

      Thank you Michael! Nice to have that thing complete. I don't have experience using this transmission, but from what a few sites that I follow, they continue to state that it is a strong Tranny. Should be able to handle your 5.9 and my 5.3. If yours fails, I would not blame the trans choice, but the fact that it probably has current wear. This is something that you definitely have the talent for. Cheers!

      UCanDoIt2 man it really was a great series and I wish I would have done it myself. my current ax15 is less then 2 years old the first transmission I lost 3rd gear in and instead of paying to have it done I bought a rebuilt unit on ebay lol for 850! at the time the jeep was my daily driver and I didn't trust myself to do the rebuild at the time! I really think your right though the more I drive the jeep the more I realize it's strength!

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hang on!!!! For the Intermediate Plate and both housings, I degreased them and then Painted only the Outside surfaces. I masked off the internal areas and did not get paint in that area. I would not recommend painting the internals as the lubricating oil could break it down and cause you problems. Hope this helps! Cheers!!!!
