Wanted to drop a big thank you for this video series. After getting quotes from local shops ranging from $2000 - $2500, I decided to take it on myself. With your detailed guidance and 3 days of work, was able to end the suffering of double clutching that's plagued me for almost 2 years. It was fairly easy, and wish I would have done it sooner. Best of all it was > $400!! Its a good thing you do man!
I can not thank you enough for taking the time to make the AX15 rebuild video! I set up my lap top in the garage and with a heavy dose of “pause and play” went to work. Video's were easy to follow and purely professional quality! Thank you so much!!!
very impressive most are quick videos and not a lot of a describing, my cases two ax-15 are not one piece but a belly side and cover plate , but I am sure it is pretty much cut and dry . thank you . I have two ax-15 I have to replace the reverse gears as you know young adults and raising the body of the jeep and forgetting to accommodate room for shifting . thank you so much I will indeed follow you on at least the Jeep
Nice video! With the help of my uncle I rebuilt an ax-5 years ago. I put $700 bucks worth of gears, synced and etc into it. It lasted awhile until it got stuck in 5th one day. It was in the winter and I bought an impala. A week later I was smiling while sitting in heated leather seats while the heater blew hot air on my feet and the wipers sloshed sleet and rain off my fog free windshield. Anyway I never changed out my synchronizer shoes (rice krispy looking deals). They failed and locke
Thanks for the videos they have helped me reassemble mine as I pulled the thing apart months ago and forgot where the ball and elongated indents went....
Very good video. Thank you for taking the time to explain it all. This video is going to be a such a time saver when I replace my clutch and syncro gears.
pretty much everything in your AX15 series seems real familiar except I curse the dropped parts then thank them for not bouncing over and rolling under things. I use stacked bins and a rail to hang the same bins above those on the wall behind my bench. Thanks, looks good
hi, I own a 95 jeep wrangler Rio grande and when I run in 5th gear and 5th gear only. It make a lot of rattles and noise. I've looked up forms and a lot of them says that it the 5th gear snap rings that useally the cause of it. Is that what it is at 9:55 or another part of the vid. please if you would be so kind to help point it out it would be awesome. thanks in advance.
Why is my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission making a banging sound. I just had this happen about a month ago, had another tranzmission put in now it has ztarted doing the same thing. The other transmission did it on the interstate and stopped would not go in any gear.Thank You
Great video. I have a 1991 Jeep YJ with the AX15, 5 speed transmission and the NP231 Transfer Case and Trac-Loc differential. I have a horrific shake when letting out the transmission clutch, in 1st & reverse gear only. Once the clutch is engaged its fine. It feels like I have no transmission mount. Or a really bad axle rap. Happens only once in a while (more when it’s hot). Can this be the AX15, 5 speed transmission, NP231 Transfer Case or the Trac-Loc problem?? I need help. Thanks, keep the videos coming, there great
hey man nice video. got a quick question though, I took just the rear alter housing off mine as its mounting holes to the cross member were shot and cracked. In removing the cover I ended up with what I can only guess is a nylon cup with a nipple on one end and some tabs. what the heck is this thing and where does it go?
Thank you very much for the wonderful series on AX-15. My local transmission shop wasn't able to get some of the gears off of the shafts since I was taking them to other shops for cryo & shot-peening treatment as I need to increase the strength of my AX-15 due to my choice of engine. I noticed in your video series that the gears sometimes don't come off the shaft on the first try when using the hydraulic press. What advice would you give for gear removal - thank you!
Hi Robinson, I enjoyed your video. How do I determine which automatic transmission is in my 1992 Jeep Wrangler? I am debating as to whether I should attempt to pull it apart and replace parts. It has started to grind as we shift from park, across reverse-neutral, to drive. Jeffrey
Excellent video coverage of step by step. Is there much difference with AX5 and AX15 tear down and rebuild? I will be taking on the project in the near future. Fortunately I put my spare tranny in and this will be a back up. Syncro's between 2 and 3 are back, but never know what you encounter on the way. Thank you for a great video!
Using your video series as a guide to take apart my AX5 transmission. Any idea why my shift arm feels locked up and I cannot slide out the shift arm shaft? The magnet and pick won't pull the shaft out. It feels like it's engaged in the transmission. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. S
Working on a 98 Dakota AX15. When in idle, let out the clutch and you can hear obvious bearing whine. Push in the clutch, it stops. Also, its louder and more noticable in in reverse. I'm thinking its the input bearing. Does that sound correct to you? Clean 1 owner truck. 128k miles. If so, is the input bearing replaceable without braking down the whole tranny?
Awesome video quality and awesome commentary! I noticed that you like to bang things with your hand. Both my father and grandfather gave me the advice to, "not do this, as it messes with your joints. Instead use a deadblow." Just food for thought, not trying to sound like a smartass.
Which craftsman impact are you using? And is it the 1/2 or 3/8 drive? Im considering buying one. Seems beefy. Im building this same tranny at work right now. Thanks for taking the time to make a video on it.
Hi. I recently swapped my tail housing becuase it was cracked. Trans was shifting fine before the swap. Now it feels like the shifter is stuck. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Question for you guys. I did use a 10mm to remove the shift shaft access plug and was previously stripped and now totally stripped now. Any suggestions on getting that out? Thanks
Question. If a transfer case that's hooked up to an automatic transmission uses ATF, then does a transfer case hooked up to a manual transmission use Manual transmission fluid i.e. Gear Oil?
man im lousing my mind cause im begining rebuilt my ax15 falowing your steps but i got stocked whit something i cant solve , i remove the screw of the 5 fork but the rail doesnt came out , and i trie and trie and tired of look and i dont see why the hell the rail doesnt came out ...so the rail doesnt out , the fork cant out , im stocked ...what could be stocking the rail ?
5:30 Harbor Freight swivel head ratchet. I love that thing so fucking much, only problem is it pinches your hand every once in a while, still worth it though.

Is the input shaft supposed to have that much play ????
Great ! It's clearly and easy. Thank you very much !
Well put together. I'm using this for my newbs.
I wondering how to decide which gear cluster to buy. There is a huge price gap in suppliers.
@Boasandpythons you gotta love brilliant engineering... Thank you

Does every YJ with a straight 6 come with an AX-15?
Sadly no. Many came with a BA10/5.
I believe AX-15's were used starting in late '89 model year YJ's. Early '89's still used BA10's.
@teksman777 thank you, the editing on part 2 is just about done thing get more interesting, the deeper i go
