I don’t comment often - BUT I really wanted to let you know your TRANSPARENCY & vulnerability makes a significant difference . As a first semester graduate student , I’ve had a difficult time transitioning from undergrad to graduate WORK LOAD. As a result, I’ve had to so much anxiety and for the first time MELTDOWNS. All to say, your transparency helps us lean on each other , essentially relate . Pursuing something one is passionate about DOES NOT equal comfort or ease. Rather, it makes it more difficult. You care so much about a field and therefore it can cause distress because u have to keep up with so many unreasonable expectations (long hours, no sleep, yet perform well!) . Again , thank you for all that you share Rachel 💜
Thank you! ugh I appreciate you saying this. It's seriously why i continue to post. I want yall to know you're not alone. We're all here for each other.
My husband is a 2nd year obs/gyne resident in Turkey and last week he worked 108 hours in one week! It’s insane what residents go through. And happy belated birthday!
My first grandchild was born yesterday, and I was lucky enough to be in the delivery room with my daughter. I held one of her legs to help her push. It was the most wonderful experience of my life. I sure understand why you do what you do! And I have so much respect for all the labor and delivery staff.
Can’t stress enough how much comfort you bring with these glimpses into your life. I truly feel like a friend is telling me that it will get better and I’m beyond thankful to you! You influence and inspire me always ❤
Busy mom of a 2 year old and 3 month old, wfh full time, started working out again, and working on my masters licensee marriage therapist. I watch you to get motivation to work hard haha You’re doing amazing so motivational ❤
Thank you for showing the ups and downs. Exhaustion isn't pretty. Not physically, you're always beautiful, but the effects are not pretty, not positive. It effects so much of our health and well-being mentally, physically, and emotionally. Thank you for showing that and thank you for pushing through to follow your dreams. We endeavor to overcome all that stands in our way to prevent us from becoming what we are meant to be for the betterment of others. Thank you for being a reminder that no, it isn't easy, but yes, it is worth it.❤
Awh thank you for this. You're absolutely right. It's PHYSIOLOGICALLY detrimental to our health and wellbeing. Here to share all this in hopes that things will continue to change.
Thank you for highlighting your mental well being during your journey. I also recently had some moments like this as a pre-med and it’s so hard! Studying for MCAT and doing life is so so much, so I can only imagine residency. I have always appreciated how honest you are through medical school and now. Thank you again Dr. Southard ❤️
Happy birthday to you. I love your videos because you are authentic. It’s okay to have ups and downs it life. It’s good to vent and not keep your feelings bottled up.
I always look forward to these vlogs because they resonate with me a lot and are so inspiring even though I'm not in the medical field (information systems technology and management major 🙋🏽♂). Rachel is hardworking, but she's also such an outgoing and multi-faceted person. Happy Belated Birthdayy
its crazy because these kind of hours are simply a reality of medicine - my team has surgeons doing over 20 hour surgeries...it blows my mind and I'm thankful for those in medicine everyday.
It is true. Doctors work A LOT. more than any other profession, but residents specifically are in very vulnerable positions. And unless you’re a resident, it can be hard to understand.
Happy Birthday Rachel! 🎉🎉 Blessings for many more to celebrate. One of the reasons I love your vlogs so much is your transparency hang in there you are doing amazing and yr 4 will be here before you know it🤍
Dr. Rachel. I wanted to thank you for all your content and transparency. Watching you since your first year of medical school and it’s been humbling seeing you progress and staying strong through out the process. I’ve recently been accepted to medical school and seeing your valuable content has been extremely encouraging. Thank you and wish you the best! You’ll be and are an outstanding physician.
😭😭😭 these comments are making me cry. Thank you for taking the time to write this. I appreciate it. And congratulations on your wonderful accomplishment. I’m excited for you.
I got into medical school this week :-) (at Western in Oregon!) Thank you so much for showing the reality of what’s to come. I’d rather go into it prepared
Its great to see my hero again I missed her. I am back and need some of her motivation even when she 99.9 percent tired 24/6 HAPPY BD MYAHERO i have been lost for a couple of months and tracking these events of the world trying to navigate them and I am getting sick again...thank you for showing what a normal person does HAPPYBD
Sorry i forgot your birthday Rach, Happy late Birthday, now you can say it to me as well early November baby here lol. You're one of the strongest people I know
Omg we share the same birthday and I was honestly on the same vibes just chill and relax 🙏🏼 I do community mental health as a therapist and girllllllll burn out . Continue to do amazing work happy birthday libra
Hey! I'm a first year gynae resident from Pakistan and Im going through the same if not worse. Just wanted to let you know that these videos are a huge comfort to me. Just knowing and watching someone be just as overwhelmed and tired, trying to cope with it all, helps me stay sane. Thank you for sharing and speaking up about the toxic culture in residency 💜👍🏻
Once a year I get up at 6am, work all day, eat dinner, head to an airport and take off at midnight. I simply can't sleep on an plane until it's been past 24 hours and I have no choice. I dont get to a bed until noon. And then Im allowed 4 hour nap to get up for dinner. Trust me, it's extremely not natural.
Always be MERCIFUL to yourself 💜 You are truly requiring more of your mind and body than most people. What you're doing is not "normal". You will get through this, and be stronger for it. But it definitely seems like a broken system. Praying for peace and rest over your mind and body, in Jesus Mighty Name😊
So I’m curious, your PR is 28 minutes. How much time did it take to do your first c-section? I love your vlogs, thank you for making them given the ungodly hours you are committing to your residency. I can see how hard it is and my heart hurts for you. I will never understand the residency program as it seems it’s structured to encourage residents to quit medicine. Please take care of yourself, Rafiki. You are loved by many and we are cheering for you. 🤍
Rachel HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I wanted to say how much I love your ability to show what it’s like on camera. I find it so refreshing. You are such a bright light in the medical community. We are all better to know you! Keep being amazing! Sending you so much love on your birthday post!
I was telling my friends medical people work in hospitals work alot of hours and some do 2 full time jobs 2 different hospitals . I think no other profession do what medical people do.
Happy belated birthday, Rachel! I love that piece of advice: Hard things always come with good stuff! It's so on point and so relatable. I tell myself that every single day with the program I am in too. I also feel that nothing worth doing comes easy too and it's those moments when you're struggling that truly allows you to grow as a person. That doesn't mean that things shouldn't change though either when it comes to medical training.
@@RachelSouthard wow. I am just starting my medical journey. I am 35, have spent nearly 15 years in healthcare data and analytics. I am now in undergrad starting my journey to becoming a doctor. Ill be in my 40s when I am some sort of attending, but yeah. See you there Dr Rachel!

Rachel, pls customize a shirt that says, “I’m tired.” I would literally get one because I’m always tired. Also, it’s my last semester as a premed!

I think it took be 1hr15min for my first CS hahah such a long time.
Do you need to do atleast 200 cases before the end of residency?
at least 200 vaginal deliveries, yes. Then i think 145 c sections
@@RachelSouthard Thanks Rachel for the reply!

What does her partner do that he has a cybertruck wtf lol
I’m pretty sure he worked on the web development team for Tesla. I saw her post a story about it a couple of months ago.
They are both obviously very successful people.
Worked at Tesla as a UX Designer, I’m doing product design now at a startup in architecture software.
HOTTTT. Go bb go!
I came across a TH-cam channel, "Dr. Daisy Sanchez, MD". You both look alike! It had me thinking that she could be a half-sibling.
Noooo. I don’t think we look alike at all. 🥴
