I received my Dojo cane ten days ago. I carry it everywhere , jumpin , spinning it while walking . I saw a you tube video that says not to do it like that , but it’s practice. It keeps The dead beats and d-horns away from me. . .thanks matt

I recently found you on the internet. I served also in the USMC. My primary MOS was 0811,my secondary was MP. I spent 4 year’s living in Okinawa. I’m happy to know we are brothers . I’m also a believer in Jesus. I love to talk about the freedom thAt Jesus can give if you would only receive His free gift to us. Would you be willing to make a video using small pocket fight lights? I’m finding these powerful death beams are great at blinding, disorientating an attacker. Thank you for all you do,and have done for our country.SEMPER FI.

Hi Matt, as you know from your training and experience, the average physical confrontation doesn't cross over into the realm of deadly force being required. Great instruction. Stay safe. Doug.

I carry a Taurus 605 .357 magnum J frame but I also have been carrying a Hickory cane. I have mobility issues and have been watching your videos and believe the cane is a valuable tool. I carried a blackjack and nightstick as a police officer in my younger days and even if you watch Bat Masterson reruns you will see he carried a cane and a gun. I agree with you that the cane is very useful. Especially in places that restrict firearms. I practice your techniques with my cane and feel confident with it. Places like canemasters and purpleheart armory make some nice hickory canes and let me also say for anyone who uses a cane for mobility, the wood canes are more comfortable than those cheap metal ones you get at Walmart.

I've read Tim Larkin's book. I'd like to also recommend "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker, and "The Truth About Self Defense" by Massad Ayoob. Both excellent reads and good knowledge.

You can make your own sealer that’s hundreds of years old if not thousands with 3 ingredients. You can use either cold pressed flaxseed oil or BLO, beeswax, and turpentine. It’s an amazing sealer, I was also wondering how 100% Tung oil wood work on a cane. The kind from Minwax and Watco have little to none actual oil. That’s why they dry/cure so fast, 100% tung oil can take up to a week or month. Love the videos!

14:23 Yeah, and the legal voltage (both criminal and civil) of self-defense with a cane is much lower, even if the threat dies. There is no "cane-control" lobby. Also, if you miss, you're not likely to kill innocent bystanders. And no ballistics tests, no permits, no necessity to conceal; canes, even good ones, are cheap compared to handguns. Lots of good reasons to prefer a cane. They're legal in NYC (at least I think they are.)
Some of them conceal a sword!
    Thanks for the training.

Another great video. You can't carry a gun in your hand at the mall/ restaurant, ect. but you can carry your cane. Active Self Protection sets the "pro" goal of drawing from concealment and firing a handgun sufficiently accurate enough to get a good hit at reasonably close range in 1.5 seconds. With my SIRT laser gun I am about 1.9-2.3 seconds but hitting a 1.75"x1.75" digital target at 3 yards. Striking with a cane, tip on the floor is less than a second. The point being not all situations where you need to whack someone with the cane requires deadly force and the cane can buy you time to get to a more appropriate "tool". BTW the Army like the pugil sticks as well. One of the favorite entertainment of the instructors is the pit the smallest guy in the class against the largest. David and Goliath. At 5'5" 135lb I was David. And David once again beat the c***P out of Goliath. It was the highlight of my infantry officer's school at Benning in '68 🙂 But I entertain myself easily.

Can a ironwood cane have a curved handle and is it comfortable to use in a persons hand and if used to strike what is its resistance to breaking ? What is its weight ? Will you give a total backround on usining an ironwood cane or walking stick ?
I will pray that your illiness will be healed.
    Richard

Better to jab. Pivot off the line and jab. Swinging opens you up to a counter because you have to commit to a movement in a big way.

I noticed a lot of these canes have a sharpened edge along there that really focuses the force for that deep penetrating Bone shot. I always favored an axe handle because it's flat and sharp like a sword. The flat side was nice because it was almost like a spanking instrument used by a mean Coach.. The edge was so sharp and rounded that if you hit somebody with it it had to snap a bone. I'm a lot nicer person now. Are there any canes that are exaggerated like elliptical shapes or even flattered to get the advantage of being able to spank a little like a flat sword?
