+Edward Hayes Cunningham Dozens (50+) of satellite dishes and antennas to be able to send and receive communication to and from anyone and anywhere in the world. Most importantly, the order of the President to launch nuclear weapons which is why its nicknamed the 'Doomsday Plane'. the SecDef often uses it when traveling overseas.

I live on the extended centerline also, I always have to correct people who look up and say, "Look, it's Air Force One! What's the president doing here?" Then I go into the explanation of what it's real purpose is and that home base is just to the south in Bellevue. I love looking at her with the gear and flaps extended on long final, maybe I'll get a video one of these days.

The E-4B is protected against the effects of electromagnetic pulse and has an electrical system designed to support advanced electronics and a wide variety of communications equipment. An advanced satellite communications system provides worldwide communication for senior leaders through the airborne operations center. Other improvements include nuclear and thermal effects shielding, acoustic control, an improved technical control facility and an upgraded air-conditioning system for cooling electrical components.

scary812 Both 747-200's used as Air Force One when carrying the president have been updated constantly with New avionics, radar, security features, and engines. There are a handful of documentaries on the topic. I'm sure officially the Air Force would be pleased if everyone like you, underestimated this machine because it is a -200. No aircraft has been maintained as well as the two.

My feeling is that an EMP (a large electromagnetic wave) would overdrive the front end (the part of a radio that first receives the signal) even if it was of an older construction. I do agree that older equipment could come back on line quicker but the older equipment is so limited in what it can do, just when you need it most. Communications would go down, maybe briefly even if it was older equipment.

I'm sure that the pilots know exactly what they're doing as well as the officials being familiar with the boarding procedures, but seeing so many folks standing directly in front of the #1 and #3 and hearing an unexpectedly high rpm sound coming from the engines, this doesn't look right. I have seen a 200 with a filled baggage container sucked into the #3 of a Northwest 747 so I know how powerful these puppies can be. First time I have seen what looks like an air intact scoop atop any Air Force passenger aircraft. It seems like that may add significant drag. Of course it could be sealed with plexiglass in front and a radar device inside. Is Zurich normally this smoggy or am I looking at fog? Terrific video

The President doesn't fly on this plane. This plane travels with the President on all trips outside the U.S. It is a flying military command center that the President would board in the even of a major war (U.S. Vs Russia or China etc) breaking out when he wasn't in the U.S. Among other duties this aircraft has the systems on board required to authorize and execute the launch of nuclear weapons. Hence it has the nickname the "doomsday plane."

Not to put too fine a point on it, but AF1 is not located at Langley. It is hangered at Andrews, very close to D.C. Langley AFB is in Hampton, VA. These E4's are hangered primarily at Offutt AFB, NE, and I have guarded them and Looking glass planes more than I care to remember back when I was enlisted. I was an Officer at Langley, and I assure you, AF1 was not hangered there. Some other stuff was, but not AF1. As for Bush, he did board AF1. He then flew to Barksdale AFB, and then on to Offutt AFB, as that is where the alternate Command Center to the Pentagon is located. The E4's are an alternate airborne command post for the president, and one is always about 2 hours flying time from wherever the president is at any given moment.
