I flew as a military passenger in a C5 Galaxy from Rhein Main Air Base, Frankfurt, Germany to Dover AFB, Delaware in 1979.
Passengers sit on top , seats facing backwards with only an occasional porthole to look outside. Best long distance flight I ever took, lots of leg room between seats for 76 passengers, and flight only cost me about $10 for the in flight box meal. 🐶🤡 Great camera work !

I'm a Air Force veteran. When I was station at Clark AB Philippines, I would watch the C-5 (FRED) land and take off all the time. This is my favorite cargo plane

If anyone is interested, the USAF Designation for the C-5M's engines is: F138 GE-100. This engine is better known as the CF6-80C2B-1, and is part of the same family of engines that power the E-4B Nightwatch NAOC, the KC-10A Extender, the VC-25A/Air Force One, and the new KC-46A Pegasus Tanker.

Thank you for a gorgeous video! I was born and raised where these, the C-130 and C-141 were manufactured. As a child seeing these planes being tested was an everyday occurrence. While I like the scream of the TF-39s on the C-5A, they are still distinctive planes and it is still good to see these birds flying. They're like an aluminum overcast as they go overhead, massively impressive.

Lockheed C-5M took off in 20 seconds from the moment the acceleration began. This is power.

Old but still good. I was the guy marshalling the C-5. This is when former president trump came to zurich. On departure, we were completely empty except for a tow bar. It was good to be able to show a video to my co-workers of one of my favorite stops in my career.

The acceleration for such a large plane is incredible and short take off. The power to weight ratio must be immense.

This is the new, more powerful "M" model. I spent the last 14 years of my childhood getting to be an amateur planespotter. My father was in the U.S. Air Force. I have always loved watching C-5's and C-130's as they were always around and still are well over 50 plus years later. We were stationed at Ramstein AB West Germany during my senior year of high school and we had frequent C-5's coming and going. The high school at Ramstein is only a few hundred meters off the center line of the bases only runway. It was a particularly blustery, rainy day in early November. We were outside doing our JROTC Color Guard practice for an upcoming event when all 5 of us heard the tell tale "banshee" howling of a C-5 taking off and thought nothing more of it as we huddled in our winter jackets and kept marching around the football field. Fast forward about 120 seconds and we were still hearing those screaming engines and we, almost as one, all stopped to look over our shoulders and that C-5 literally looked as if it were being held motionless by some impossible force, yet it was still pointed skyward. We all just stood there, praying under our breath and willing that beast upwards and onwards. Finally, after what felt like 15 minutes (was probably 2 to 3 minutes) she was clearing the tree lined horizon and we all just stopped for a second to make sure all of us had just witnessed what felt like a miracle against the laws of physics...
Beautiful aircraft with a sound completely its own...

I am retired US Air Force and can remember when the C-5 entered service in the early 1970's. I thought it was an amazing aircraft then and nothing has happened to change my mind. I had a chance to fly on one space-A coming back from Asia in the 1980's. Have to hand it to the hard working maintainers that keep these planes flying ... this one has been in service for more than 35 years! I'll bet the crew is younger than the aircraft.

It was just stood there and then it was out of sight. Decades later, It's still awesome. Got to fly in two. Other countries may now have bigger, None have better! First time I saw one. In basic training at Lackland. We had been there a few weeks so our TI knew us by then and would be human sometimes. We were in formation and he faced us. "See that? That's a C-5. And that is why you do all this shit. If you can't do this you can't do that." TSgt Marcum early 80s.
I watched a C-5 land nose gear up at Clark. The jet survived with relatively minor sheet metal and gear repairs. Lots of sparks and concrete dust though.

Regarding the G650: I only mention an aircraft if it is the object that I intend to film, in this particular case it was the Galaxy. If i had to mention all aircraft in the frame the titles would become too much at some point, so I reduce it to an absolute minimum.

I rode in one of these carrying 70 + ton M1A1 Abrams tank. Load master said they could carry two! Really weird flying in something that big and heavy.

Rode one of these bad boys from Clark AFB in the PI to Kadena. Lost an engine in flight. Didn’t even know about it until we landed and the aircrew told us about it.

Love these. I live, literally, a stones throw from Wright-Patterson. In no way do I condone such action, I could throw a rock over there fence. My father ( God Bless Him ) was an aircraft mechanic on W.P.A.F.B. I spent a few nights while he was working Mid Nights on the flight line. Sadly, the C5s have left us. We have the rather puny C17s here now. The C5 has a sound which I love to hear. Self supporting statement here; I have a couple videos from action here. My old neighbor and I got run off one night but the M.P.s told me that I could keep the footage.

My father worked on the C5-A Galaxy at Kelly A.F.B. He used to tell me stories about them and what he worked on. He painted them at one point then he worked cleaning the engines and in sheet-metal. I loved the roar of the old engines. I still see them fly over everyday and it brings back fond memories of him 😪 I hope it brings you good memories too.
Thanks for posting, I bet it was a real surprise seeing one land over there. I've thought of posting videos of all the action I see at Lackland A.F.B. - A.W.A.C.'s, different jets, other cargo planes, and some Boeing planes since they have a plant down here. Maybe I will since so many people don't get to see them often and so many are interested.

Wonder how often the tires need to be changed after landing such a huge plane?

    • @ZurichAirportSpotter
      @ZurichAirportSpotter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not sure about it bus I have a number in my mind that a shell can go through at least 200 landings before they put another layer of rubber around it.

@@ZurichAirportSpotter A lot more than I would have thought lol. But guess the tires are made to hold up to heavy landings. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Which one is better C-5 or C-17? Such a tough question they’re both such cool airplanes

Really tough choice indeed, they are also both quite different in size and have different abilities..
