    CAMILLA, Ga. - One of the most successful phone scams these days operated out of a small, south Georgia town where the crooks get their food and shelter for free and have nothing but time on their hands.
    If you received a call from someone threatening you with arrest if you don't pay up for missing jury duty or IRS tax deadlines, chances are you were talking to an inmate at Jimmy Autry State Prison near Camilla.
    Prison authorities admitted they tried everything: raiding the medium security prison on a regular basis, transferring the ringleaders to other facilities, arresting civilians who help with the scam on the outside.
    So this time they tried hitting Autry in the dead of night, and the FOX 5 I-Team watched the raid unfold.
    Nearly 200 Georgia Department of Corrections tactical squad members fanned out through all 19 housing units at Autry, assigned to search by hand all 1676 inmates.
    Inside the first housing unit the FOX 5 I-Team visited, we found the very reason investigators have come here: a pile of torn scraps of paper left on the common room floor.
    "So this is the script they use to scam people?" asked FOX 5 I-Team reporter Randy Travis.
    "Yes," replied Georgia Department of Corrections Special Investigations chief Ricky Myrick, holding up a piece of the script. "And when they saw us coming in they tried to shred it on us. But you can see they talk about having a warrant issued today."
    A warrant for your arrest unless you pay up now because you either missed jury duty or owe back taxes. Investigators said inmates at Autry have been making those fake calls for years.

      @melterrell5724 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ace TroubleShooter nobody's paying $1,000 for a $30 phone at best you might be able to get like a $200 for a $30 phone at best now iPhone 8s you probably can get a thousand maybe a couple hundred more for that. FYI in Georgia with one of the highest highest unemployment rates in the country co's are getting paid $15, $16 and up while minimum wage is only the $7 and some change so I think they're doing pretty good for

    • @dco5055
      @dco5055 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a documentary where prisoners were paying around $1500 for a phone delivered by a drone dropping it in the yard. Didn't matter what type and then they were using it to harass the victims or organized crime while they were in prison.

      The best way to spot a scammer is ask something personal you would think the government or credit card company would know. Most of the time all they have is your name,number. I get these calls about my credit cards (India voice) and lets use as a example they call about my visa CC and I tell them I don't have visa then they make up another one like I mean chase. (Red Flag)

    What they should do is get cellphone blockers installed in these buildings as an extra precaution. The guards use Walkie talkies and/or land lines anyways.

    • @Skilliard
      @Skilliard 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Active Cell Phone jammers are illegal by the FCC. Best they can do is passively interfere with the signal via dense concrete walls, but that would be extremely expensive and not perfectly effective.

      Skill Graal interesting thanks for the info

    • @dco5055
      @dco5055 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple metal screen Faraday mesh around the tall outer fence would knock most of the signal down. Also cell phone jamming isn't illegal if you get the ok with FCC. I been in many buildings that they legally block cell signals for security reasons mostly government but the prison is a part of the government so I'm sure it would be cheaper then spending millions for transfers and a 200+ people raid.

    • @TheAceTroubleshooter
      @TheAceTroubleshooter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A wallpaper would end up getting destroyed by prisoners. If you were going to make something like work, it would have to be done while the prison was being built, being put behind the walls, whatever material it is. Also, every state pays the prisons a flat rate per day for each prisoner. Here in Tennessee each prison/jail gets paid 125$/day for state inmates, that is why you will see a lot of county jails trying to hold onto their state prisoners instead of sending them to prison. County inmates here are only worth 22.50$/day. This info is also several years old so Im sure the dollar amounts have risen.

    Would be very easy to solve this problem but no lets spend millions to transfer people and bring more people in for a raid. Get with the FCC and a company the specializes in cell jammers and jam the signal in the prison only. The FCC would make sure the jamming stops right outside the prison. Jammers can be made very cheap and I'm guess the prison has a no cell phone policy around inmates so have landlines inside for the guards if they need to be contacted. They could even put a cheap screen mesh around the prison to act as a Faraday cage even on the outside fence would knock the signal down pretty bad but have radio tower for guards radios inside.

      To be fair he did have a history of investing, sold his home when he got convicted to pay for lawyer fees, the reaming he bought treasury bonds.
      5 years into his sentence he decided to risk it. Got copies of the wall street journal and phoned his broker for advice. Took a gamble on bio stocks, one of them skyrocketed due to positive phase 3 data and used to to pay for a private investigator. Eventually appealed his case and got a second trial, he was given a plea deal and got out, I wasn't working at the time he got out but my co-workers told me a limo picked him up.
