- Today I recorded a video to talk about my initial experience with being an African-American man living in Puerto Rico so far. Just moving here 2 months ago, the most questions I have recieved are ... How is it? How do I connect with people? Are there events for afro-american cultures? A these are just a few different questions I have received about the experience of being a Black man now living in Puerto Rico. Hope you enjoy the video!

Black Puerto Rican here. I can assure you that you will be fine. Just be cool and respectful and you will be fine.
Thank you!
No such thing as black Puerto Rican. Afro Puerto Rican, yes.
Black puerto rican.?? I thought you were just puerto rican. It sounds like you are a pr born or raised in the US. Where in the US you either black or white think about it.
@@Dreams-N-NightmaresSo you can't be black and Puerto Rican ? You can not be this ignorant ?
@@Dreams-N-NightmaresNegative. I was born in Puerto Rico. I am whiter than Casper. Green eyes too. Not all Puerto Rican’s have the same skin color. It’s fucking ignorant as shit to even think that. We got people with roots from Spain, indigenously from the island and from Africa. They are all here. White, brown, black. You go to a city like Guaynabo, you will see more white or light skinned people than you will see if you go a municipio like Fajardo let’s say.
You're making me want to move back 😢 I miss the tranquility, the air, the sun, the beach, but most importantly, the fresh food!
🙏🏾
I'm Black, also live in Puerto Rico. I never have any issues. Of course, there are ignorant people everywhere. I just haven't encountered them personally. I think it helps that I speak Spanish. I stromgly encourage non -Latinos who live here or are looking to live here to learn Spanish. It makes things so much easier. In the metro area there are a lot of people who speak English - but Spanish is still the primary language.
Great insight!
Puerto Ricans don't have racial issues like the US because the island is tiny and everyone is mixed up and no one has time to classify people by color etc. Is not a TV show there dedicated to black TV series or white TV series😂 everyone is living their lives and real culture everywhere.
I am African American I made a number of trips to PR, my favorite of all is Loiza Aldea, I love dancing Bomba and my heart bleeds Salsa. In fact I listen to Salsa nearly all day. The best food ever, I would get to the Salsa club at nine and leave five in the morning, just like I did when I lived in NY. I can now live vicariously through you, I just subscribed to your .channel.
Thanks for the subscription! I appreciate you!
Sure Loisa Aldea son mayoría negros

As a puertorican living in the island, we don’t care about color or race. We have been mixed for years!
Most of us respect each other and help each other, As long as you don’t fuck around you will be ok.
Now if you like an easy, rushed and quick life like living in NYC then PR is not your place, you need patience to live here but it’s worth it!
Bienvenidos and enjoy!
Agreed!
The status of the island reflects other wise . Uncle Toms trying to be "american" wich translates in oir case into WHITE . 😂😭⚰️
We been sell outs forever.
Albizu Campos , Betances ,Ruiz Belvis,Arturo Alfonso Schomburg as well so Trill Eats dont let my people to tell you different. We in denial we are in an eternal chapter inside of the movie Get Out. We dont like to talk about we hate to talk about it! But its our reality. We need to enmanicipate ourswlves from.mental slavwry as well jus5 like Bob Marley used tell the rest of the diaspora ! Nothing has changed! Like the KKK has tried to say is a "thing of the past" a lot of my people has keep repeating the same rethoric. This happens in the states, in the caribbean and with the rest of the diaapora. You said ypu studied american black history so you SHOULD know this ,quit pretwnding you dont know either. Puerto Ricans will treat you right as long as you leave that B.S. from the states behind ! Ya know what I'm talking about !!!!
I don't..what your referring to?
Well actually, some of us DON’T know what you’re talking about sir.
I’m a black man from the states who endorses LOVE & RESPECT for all people in all races…
…but not all Puerto Ricans were treating me like an EQUAL HUMAN BEING when I was vacationing over in there country.
Unfortunately RACISM is very common against black people…and the island of Puerto Rico is NO EXCEPTION.
But truth is, racism should never be experienced by anyone…regardless of whether we are black, white, brown, red or yellow.
So no my brother…some of us black folks DON’T know what you’re talking about!
@@vjej1980 than if you don't know..open your eyes and watch the news !!!

I watch the news every night mi hermano…and I see bad things being perpetrated by human beings of EVERY RACE & EVER SKIN COLOR.
So if you ONLY SEE BLACK PEOPLE engaging in bad deeds & behavior when you look at the world around you…then you just proved my point that RACISM IS ALIVE & WELL IN PUERTO RICO.
@@juliocaban465
IF YOU WERE WATCHING THE NEWS MY BROTHER…YOU WOULD KNOW THAT FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS THE GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN TRYING TO ABOLISH LATIN IMMIGRATION INTO THE STATES…CLAIMING THAT MUCH OF THE CRIME PERPETRATED IN THE COUNTRY IS BEING COMMITTED BY LATIN IMMIGRANTS.
AND PRESIDENT TRUMP WAS SO EAGER TO KEEP LATIN IMMIGRANTS OUT THE COUNTRY…THAT HE WANTED TO SPEND BILLIONS OF DOLLARS…JUST TO PUT UP A WALL.
BECAUSE ACCORDING TO HIM, LATIN IMMIGRANTS ARE DOING NOTHING BUT BRINGING B.S. INTO THE COUNTRY FROM THEIR HOMELAND.
AND THE LATIN COMMUNITY WAS UTTERLY OUTRAGED BY TRUMPS VIEW OF THEIR PEOPLE.
AND SO WAS THE BLACK COMMUNITY…BECAUSE WE DID NOT AGREE WITH THE GOVERNMENTS RACIST VIEWPOINT OF LATINO PEOPLE.
SO YOU HAVE ALOT OF NERVE LOOKING AT US BLACK PEOPLE THE SAME WAY THAT RACIST EUROPEANS HAVE BEEN LOOKING DOWN ON YOU’RE HISPANIC PEOPLE.
IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT WHEN OTHERS LABEL YOUR PEOPLE AS BEING EVERYDAY CRIMINALS IN THE NEWS…
…THEN YOU NEED TO STOP LABELING US BLACK PEOPLE AS EVERYDAY CRIMINALS IN THE NEWS!!!
I knew as soon as you were turned around and your eyes got big you saw something fantastic. The women of Puerto Rico are *chef's kiss*!!!

Since we are little we are told that Africa has been a huge influence in our Caribbean culture. Education has played a huge role in that. We are taught from an early age that we are a blend of different ethnicities and to be proud of that.
Puerto Rico is not perfect but at least that is one of the things I always miss.
Dope!!!!!!!!
Welcome to PR, am a New Yorker, I live in San Sebastian! I Love to see different cultures! I get excited!

Great to hear! For sure!
I myself have been living here in Puerto Rico for two months now. I lucked up on a job transfer and so far it’s been one of my best moves ever. I sometimes have to pinch myself to remind myself it’s real. Being here learning the language and living the island life chill-laxing is what it’s all about.
Love the beach and party mentality here and the weather..

Welcome to PR! Just keep in mind that life tends to slow down, not only in PR but everywhere in the Caribbean 😁. One more detail I would like to share, San Juan is only one part of the island, there's more to see and do outside of the metro area. Hope you enjoy life in PR.
Thanks for the tips!
Puertorican born and raised but been living in the states for the last 20 years. I tell Afro-American people here that Im black and Im extremely proud of being African! 99% of people in PR will treat you like youre one of us. Only 1% is just ignorant. But bro, feel yourself at home. I will stop by again to give you some good BBQ options 🇵🇷🔥
Thank you for that! Much love!
Are we really African after 500 years of being in the states and most of us having mixed dna
@@YasukeNakamoto 500 years being in the states? What do you mean by that? If anything, U.S. turned Puerto Rico into one of their colonies in 1898.
To answer your question, yes, we have a lot of African in our culture including food and cooking styles, our music (bomba), many words we use on a daily basis such as dengue, banana, chimpancé, bachata, bongo, conga, cumbia, mambo, merengue, rumba, samba, tango, sandunga, chévere, bemba, mandinga, motete, guarapo, guineo, mofongo, ñame, quimbombó… and so much more. If you want to see some more for yourself, take a trip to the island. Maybe head to the town of Loíza where the African roots are still quite intact.

@@sacristan679 I think you’re missing something. When he talks about being black in PR that’s what he meant.
Good morning. I ran into your video today, and I have to make a comment . I was born in Brooklyn NY from Puertorrican parents and grew up in PR. I lived in PR 20 years, from age 4 to 24. Different from you, I a came to Texas. I will tell you that when I got here I had a culture shock. I couldn't understand why whites and blacks were separated . I will give one example. I worked for HISD as a teacher and the first time I went to the cafeteria black teachers were sitting in a table and whites on another table. Well I got my lunch and sat in the black table. The white teachers looked at me like I was crazy 🤪. The next day I sat on the White table. I got the same response from the black teachers. One day on a meeting I stood up and told them that their behavior was stupid and ignorant. What are we teaching to the students? We need to stop this nonsense 🙄 in school. You all need to take a field trip to PR so you can learn how to be human. You make distinction between animals not people. Anyway I continue to move among the tables throughout the year and by the middle of the school year there was only one teacher table and everyone sat on it for lunch. I retired from that school 5 years ago after 30 years of teaching mathematics. I am happy that you went to PR. Continue to enjoy paradise and keep up your videos. There are a lot of ignorant people out there that need our help. God bless 🙌 you.

I lived and worked in Puerto Rico. They prefer white or Europeans, if I'm honest. I would recommend learning Spanish. There are many Puerto Ricans who do not speak English. If you really want to enjoy the Puerto Rican experience, Spanish is a must.
I'm in Guatemala and I love it. The people here are mostly indigenous and very proud. I'm really enjoying myself.
I do have some agreeance here! All love!

Maybe they just prefer people that aren't ignorant & speak Spanish ?
It's not that we prefer them it the attitudes ppl bring
Btw , where in the world did you get that Puerto Ricans are mostly indigenous? We are literally mixed with European, African & native Taino. In fact, most Taino people were killed by the Spanish.

Why did you move to PR? I’m just curious. Thanks. PS. Welcome to our beautiful island. We all have african blood in our veins, we all are islanders. If you like diversity, you in the right place. If you feel awkward or uncomfortable about something, believe me it’s not because of the color of your skin. Maybe it’s because they don’t speak english and don’t understand what you’re saying. We are friendly people and as long as you’re respectful and polite you won’t have any issues. I had already visited twice and loved the vibe!
I am from Puerto Rico but I came to NYC 🗽I was 15 years and now 77 and live in New Jersey. I never like NYC and relocated to New Jersey I always like to live in Long Island Suffolk Nassau. I always search place with houses and patio maybe if I can move to PA. I lived in Coamo and in school the teachers never speak about Africa including slavery only about USA slavery . No slavery in PR in my hometown the mayority were medium complexion they were dark PR but we call them people of color. I am white green eyes brown with highlights. When I came to NYC they believe I was Italian Scandinavia or Jew or Spaniard. In my school I was admiration or jealousy and the teachers told me that I was in the wrong school i should go to catholic school because all students where white. In the sixties I went back and I want to go back but my job was here. Now I going to visit but my generation left the island or die. I went to Florida and I love it 🥰 when the Puerto Ricans are successful and they very well educated no like NYC the Puerto Ricans in Florida are middle class and successful business I am very proud of PR community in Florida. According the PR of today is economically better but the youth doesn’t behave like my generation because the youth Not all them are more crude and vulgar depends of the education and environment.

Puerto ricans are very proud of our african ancestry. You are correct about the music, is very influenced by african heritage so is the food and many words. Im sure theres always someone racist but overall you could find prejudice like any other place in the World. The smaller islands around the csrribean such as siant thomas virgin islands, they are very intertwined with us. For many years we have work together in many fronts and share goods. As well as tourism visits and studying. There has been a surge in tourism in PR the past few years. People frpm many places come to visit...
I appreciate the insight! And yes! VERY Proud!
@trilleats Yeah , it is true. We sort of proud on our african roots. Though, we also got some pride on some taino and some european ( Though the last one is more like love and hate). I did noticed that some puerto rican can deny some of their african blood and overexagerate their european dna. Though, that is reducing thankfully. Though , weirdly puerto rican that look pretty mixed or white passing do not that much of issue of accepting their blackwood. Some of who are black passing weirdly deny when clearly they look blacks despite being mixed. Also, the reason you are going well here is cause you got a chill and bro vibe and we mingle well with that vibe. Que goze aquì y lo pase brutal aquí.

The residents of Loiza are mainly of African descent and still carry the African culture. For example the dance “la bomba” came from Africa, the santerismo, the Afro Latin music, etc. The Caribbean blacks have kept some of theire African traditions unlike the blacks on the mainland. We all can embrace our traditions and cultures but this world be a happier place if we choose to be colorblind and respect each other.

I grew up alongside Puerto Ricans in Brooklyn NY. Watched the older Puerto Rican men come outside with their folding tables to play dominoes outside. Many of my oldest and closest friends are from Puerto Rico. So the first time I visited the island to depart on a cruise, I couldn’t wait to call Mi Hermano back in NYC the very second I stepped off the plane. I was excited to be in my man’s motherland.
One thing tho, while no one was rude to me, neither was anyone friendly towards me. I was dressed in a shirt the locals might wear. Each time I crossed paths with someone on the street, I greeted them either buy saying hello or hola with a smile. I never had my greeting returned. Again, no one was bad to me, but with the level of unfriendliness displayed, I couldn’t help but wonder what was behind it.

Great video:: question: are you learning Spanish or making your way around in English?
I’m looking to make the move too - actively learning the language.
Was curious about your situation if you’re still there
Learning Spanish every day!

Fam much respect. I as a 🇵🇷 that lived & studied there. I can tell you as you know. People vibe with good energy but, there are some that still haven’t grown up or are just haters. You going to get that in All places unfortunately. 🇵🇷 is a beautiful & dangerous also. Just know that not All 🇵🇷 are like that & besides 🇵🇷 come in ALL Colors & Flavors. 👍🫡

I am born and raised in the island, currently living in San Antonio, TX. Funny that you moved from TX to PR. For the most part, we PRs don't see skin color, we just see the people since most of us are heavily mixed. If you want to immerse yourself in our black history and culture, then you need to go to Loiza Aldea. Like others have stated: be open to "island time" and you will be fine. Just respect the culture and the people and follow the saying: "when in Rome..."
Got It! Thank You!
the roughest beaches are in the north side you want a calm one there in the south really nice
Headed there soon!
Are you serious!! Loiza is the fricken boom!! It's our main #1 african culture it was a Taino Indian chiefs daughter who married an african slave. You have to go to Loiza and see the Bomba! It is an Afro- rican dance . And if you want real BBQ, go to Fajardo . La estacion.
🇵🇷✊🏿✊🏽✊🏾🇵🇷 AFRICAN ALL DAY!!!!!!!!
Appreciate the insight!
We like US black culture and music and fashion and like to imitate much of it, that is why we integrated so well in New York culture. New York black is the one most connected to us.
Understood! Thank you!
Welcome to my Isla,, hope you haf lots of fun,,
Thanks for the warm welcome!
Hey .. where is the location of your apt and what about the power issue .. can you touch on that .. good work though.. been to PR 3 times when I was a kid ..
North side of island. Do deal with those issues but Generators help a lot.
Thank you for the insight I’m a BLACK woman not an African American. It’s nice to see both accepted. 🧿I would like the information to the chat group. I’m trying to find a place for me to land from the main land.
Great video! We're moving to Puerto Rico next week and I was wondering if I could get information on the WhatsApp group you mentioned in the meeting.
Yes of course! contact me on instagram!
Puerto Ricans are not racists because in their veins they have ancestral indigenous blood as well as Spanish, Irish, African, French, Italian and German blood and for about 70 years now, Asian blood as well.
💯💯💯

In PR we are not focused in a persons skin color as in the states. As you said, people shouldn’t have that kind of prejuice when they come to visit us.
‼️
Fun fact, the late great hip-hop producer, J Dilla’s mother lives in Puerto Rico
Great FAct!
What's up bro 🙏 blessings from Minnesota 🇵🇷 🇺🇸 . A lot of people don't know that Puerto Rico is part of the states since ufffff ! Mexican immigrants are more popular here in Minnesota 😂 than us 🙄
Understand!
My Black brothers the word BARBACOA WHICH IS BBQ IS FROM NATIVE TAINO ANCESTORS OF THE CARIBBEAN
Makes A lot Of Sense!
Learn something new everyday. Well this shows a connection between Puerto Ricans and blacks b/c we love a good barbeque.

🧢 The street are into that, just like every other street of this part of the world. Smh You need to go out more( or not) and stop this country ass shi of spreading your limited jibara perception of the world. 😂😭⚰️
