  • Today I recorded a video to talk about my initial experience with being an African-American man living in Puerto Rico so far. Just moving here 2 months ago, the most questions I have recieved are ... How is it? How do I connect with people? Are there events for afro-american cultures? A these are just a few different questions I have received about the experience of being a Black man now living in Puerto Rico. Hope you enjoy the video!

@@Dreams-N-NightmaresNegative. I was born in Puerto Rico. I am whiter than Casper. Green eyes too. Not all Puerto Rican’s have the same skin color. It’s fucking ignorant as shit to even think that. We got people with roots from Spain, indigenously from the island and from Africa. They are all here. White, brown, black. You go to a city like Guaynabo, you will see more white or light skinned people than you will see if you go a municipio like Fajardo let’s say.

I'm Black, also live in Puerto Rico. I never have any issues. Of course, there are ignorant people everywhere. I just haven't encountered them personally. I think it helps that I speak Spanish. I stromgly encourage non -Latinos who live here or are looking to live here to learn Spanish. It makes things so much easier. In the metro area there are a lot of people who speak English - but Spanish is still the primary language.

Puerto Ricans don't have racial issues like the US because the island is tiny and everyone is mixed up and no one has time to classify people by color etc. Is not a TV show there dedicated to black TV series or white TV series😂 everyone is living their lives and real culture everywhere.

Good morning. I ran into your video today, and I have to make a comment . I was born in Brooklyn NY from Puertorrican parents and grew up in PR. I lived in PR 20 years, from age 4 to 24. Different from you, I a came to Texas. I will tell you that when I got here I had a culture shock. I couldn't understand why whites and blacks were separated . I will give one example. I worked for HISD as a teacher and the first time I went to the cafeteria black teachers were sitting in a table and whites on another table. Well I got my lunch and sat in the black table. The white teachers looked at me like I was crazy 🤪. The next day I sat on the White table. I got the same response from the black teachers. One day on a meeting I stood up and told them that their behavior was stupid and ignorant. What are we teaching to the students? We need to stop this nonsense 🙄 in school. You all need to take a field trip to PR so you can learn how to be human. You make distinction between animals not people. Anyway I continue to move among the tables throughout the year and by the middle of the school year there was only one teacher table and everyone sat on it for lunch. I retired from that school 5 years ago after 30 years of teaching mathematics. I am happy that you went to PR. Continue to enjoy paradise and keep up your videos. There are a lot of ignorant people out there that need our help. God bless 🙌 you.

Why did you move to PR? I’m just curious. Thanks. PS. Welcome to our beautiful island. We all have african blood in our veins, we all are islanders. If you like diversity, you in the right place. If you feel awkward or uncomfortable about something, believe me it’s not because of the color of your skin. Maybe it’s because they don’t speak english and don’t understand what you’re saying. We are friendly people and as long as you’re respectful and polite you won’t have any issues. Also, you might feel kinda strange because it’s a new culture, but I think in a month or two you’ll feel like you’re home. Take care and peace! ✌️ 🇵🇷😀

I am from Puerto Rico but I came to NYC 🗽I was 15 years and now 77 and live in New Jersey. I never like NYC and relocated to New Jersey I always like to live in Long Island Suffolk Nassau. I always search place with houses and patio maybe if I can move to PA. I lived in Coamo and in school the teachers never speak about Africa including slavery only about USA slavery . No slavery in PR in my hometown the mayority were medium complexion they were dark PR but we call them people of color. I am white green eyes brown with highlights. When I came to NYC they believe I was Italian Scandinavia or Jew or Spaniard. In my school I was admiration or jealousy and the teachers told me that I was in the wrong school i should go to catholic school because all students where white. In the sixties I went back and I want to go back but my job was here. Now I going to visit but my generation left the island or die. I went to Florida and I love it 🥰 when the Puerto Ricans are successful and they very well educated no like NYC the Puerto Ricans in Florida are middle class and successful business I am very proud of PR community in Florida. According the PR of today is economically better but the youth doesn’t behave like my generation because the youth Not all them are more crude and vulgar depends of the education and environment.

Puerto ricans are very proud of our african ancestry. You are correct about the music, is very influenced by african heritage so is the food and many words. Im sure theres always someone racist but overall you could find prejudice like any other place in the World. The smaller islands around the csrribean such as siant thomas virgin islands, they are very intertwined with us. For many years we have work together in many fronts and share goods. As well as tourism visits and studying. There has been a surge in tourism in PR the past few years. People frpm many places come to visit...

@trilleats Yeah , it is true. We sort of proud on our african roots. Though, we also got some pride on some taino and some european ( Though the last one is more like love and hate). I did noticed that some puerto rican can deny some of their african blood and overexagerate their european dna. Though, that is reducing thankfully. Though , weirdly puerto rican that look pretty mixed or white passing do not that much of issue of accepting their blackwood. Some of who are black passing weirdly deny when clearly they look blacks despite being mixed. Also, the reason you are going well here is cause you got a chill and bro vibe and we mingle well with that vibe. Que goze aquì y lo pase brutal aquí.

Lots of Puerto Ricans love to travel frequently to Europe, especially Spain. And it’s common to buy clothes from their mayor department store, “El Corte Inglés”. The residents of Loiza are mainly of African descent and still carry the African culture. For example the dance “la bomba” came from Africa, the santerismo, the Afro Latin music, etc. The Caribbean blacks have kept some of theire African traditions unlike the blacks on the mainland. We all can embrace our traditions and cultures but this world be a happier place if we choose to be colorblind and respect each other.

I grew up alongside Puerto Ricans in Brooklyn NY. Watched the older Puerto Rican men come outside with their folding tables to play dominoes outside. Many of my oldest and closest friends are from Puerto Rico. So the first time I visited the island to depart on a cruise, I couldn’t wait to call Mi Hermano back in NYC the very second I stepped off the plane. I was excited to be in my man’s motherland.
One thing tho, while no one was rude to me, neither was anyone friendly towards me. I was dressed in a shirt the locals might wear. Each time I crossed paths with someone on the street, I greeted them either buy saying hello or hola with a smile. I never had my greeting returned. Again, no one was bad to me, but with the level of unfriendliness displayed, I couldn’t help but wonder what was behind it.

If you want to immerse yourself in our black history and culture, then you need to go to Loiza Aldea. Like others have stated: be open to "island time" and you will be fine. Just respect the culture and the people and follow the saying: "when in Rome..."

Are you serious!! Loiza is the fricken boom!! It's our main #1 african culture it was a Taino Indian chiefs daughter who married an african slave. You have to go to Loiza and see the Bomba! It is an Afro- rican dance . And if you want real BBQ, go to Fajardo . La estacion.

We like US black culture and music and fashion and like to imitate much of it, that is why we integrated so well in New York culture. New York black is the one most connected to us.

Thank you for the insight I’m a BLACK woman not an African American. It’s nice to see both accepted. 🧿I would like the information to the chat group. I’m trying to find a place for me to land from the main land.

Puerto Ricans are not racists because in their veins they have ancestral indigenous blood as well as Spanish, Irish, African, French, Italian and German blood and for about 70 years now, Asian blood as well.

In PR we are not focused in a persons skin color as in the states. As you said, people shouldn’t have that kind of prejuice when they come to visit us.
