I am glad this is coming from the mouth of an African American, as a Puerto Rican that was born in the island I have a hard time convincing people (African Americans) about how diverse, and welcoming my people are in the island, and towards other's despite their color, race, and ethnicity. Love your videos bro. GBY always and can't thank you enough for showing our pride, our beauty, and definitely southern hospitality.😂

Yeah yeah I’m Puerto Rican too and have live on the island for many years and let me tell you Puerto Ricans are cool, but they could care less for people that are from the states whether you be black Chinese white whatever even New York Ricans get shit sometimes… and they are only like that because of the people from the states try to come to our island and think they’re just gonna take over and I sure hope one day Puerto Rico becomes independent because that’s what Puerto Rico needs independence

I love how you take the time to educate our fellow citizens in the states. In schools, nothing is taught about this territory. We Puerto Ricans know more about the history of the U.S.A. than what is taught about the Spanish-American War in any state. That is why there is so much ignorance. In any case, when people like you take the time to educate yourself firsthand and share what you discover, it helps us all to become more united. It is true that we are proud of our Taino, African and European roots, but let us not forget that the seed of the United States of America has also been planted here and our way of being is very American without losing the Caribbean. A perfect combination that allows us to make everyone feel at home and call you our brother. God bless you, enjoy and keep moving forward.

I’m from NYC and there’s plenty of Puerto Ricans here- and I was still/ is still hesitant about moving to PR out of fear of racism.
Even though my Puerto Ricans friends are chill.. wasn’t sure how welcomed I’d be on their land.
Honestly seeing your videos got me inspired.

In the Eastern USA - Mostly in the NYC area - in the late 1940s & 1950s Puerto Ricans were referred to by Americans as ' The Rainbow People ' because they evenly ranged from white European looking to black African looking with all shades of skin & hair color & with everything else in between as well.

@@anotherlightbulbmoment9844 I was referring to Puerto Ricans percentage wise per entire population. For example: If all Puerto Ricans were all mixed together at once forming just one human being; that human being would look like White, Black & Asian - mostly by way Taino - all rolled up into one person. While if we were to do the same with all African Americans - including the lighter skinned one's that identify as African American - the ' result ' of that one person would still look black. (I'll explain it in a different way if you still don't understand)

It’s one thing to know of the existence, but how you’re giving us the inside scoop, while you’re living the postcard dream life in PR is another. It’s like seeing is much better than hearsay. What I recall from childhood growing up around Costa Ricans was that Puerto Ricans were so much more passionate and relatable. I’m learning from you of what I didn’t know before. So thank you for showing PR ❤.

This video was nice. I’m from Georgia. I visited PR last year and I had so much fun. At first I stayed in Vega Alta. It was nice and most of the people didn’t speak much English, which wasn’t a problem because I knew a little Spanish and the people were so nice. It reminded me of being in the Deep South (Mississippi)when I was a child. I was intrigued by the diversity. I went to Culebra, La Parguera, El Yunque, La Placita, and my favorite Vieques. I scheduled too many excursions so I didn’t get to go to Loiza to do the bomba class. I will be going back this summer because my daughter is Puerto Rican and I want her to experience her culture. Some of us black Americans can be a little funny when it comes to be around ppl that speak another language. It’s like they get offended. I only had unpleasant experiences from the ppl I went with, but they will never come with me out the U.S. again. Thanks for sharing!

Our national music is caribbean-african (Bomba and plena). Our national dish (mofongo) is african, our DNA can be 33% african (approximately). I cannot tell you that racisism doesn’t exist in PR, but at least, is minimun and is not in the open like the US. We are very, very proud of our African roots, at least I am. In PR you are treated like a person, not as an african american, not as a european, not as an Asian; you are treated like a human being. We do have names for different tourist from other countries, like gringos (which is an english speaking person from the US),and it’s not a disrespectful term at all. Whetever you go (aside from bad places) you will be treated like a person, like a friend. We don’t waste our time trying to make you less than. The island has so many things to enjoy to stop and make other people lives miserable. Enjoy your time here. ✌🏻

In the States they don’t know that the US government used to use the island of vieques as a training site by the military and dropped bombs while residents were living there that finally came to an end from the mid 90’s early 2000’s. And how the US govt used to experiment with Puerto Rican woman injecting them with cancer cells and used nuclear radiation on dissidents or those who opposed the government during uprisings. You can also see the response by the US govt after hurricane Maria was abysmal lying about the casualties that reached the 3,000 mark abuses in the sugar cane fields and cigar factories, The list of injustices goes on and on. But we always try to keep our spirits up in the face of adversity. We have had baseball players in the negro leagues and a little known fact there were a few Puerto Ricans and Dominicans with the Tuskegee airmen.

growing up in Puerto Rico before we moved to NY , the majority of the foreigners living in p.r. were Caucasian , from Latin america or arabs . we did have black foregners but not americans , they came from haiti , barbados or other Caribbean countries. that could be the reason of some people questioning , we didn't think that african americans thought of Puerto Rico as a place to move to.this shouldn't be a subject , the world we live is different than the one 50 years ago. you can travel anywhere in the world and find foreigners living in every country.....

Hmm, well as a Puerto Rican, I see it more as just Puerto Rican culture, I don't see it as white, black, or native. I'm more of a white Puerto Rican with auburn red hair, and I have a cousin whose white Puerto Rican with blonde hair, I have a cousin that's Puerto Rican afro-latina, and an aunt that looks like she's native Taino. Puerto Ricans we really don't care about skin color or ancestry, if you were born and raised on the island or were born outside the island but to parents that are both Puerto Rican or just one is Puerto Rican, then you are just Puerto Rican. I've never heard anyone say Puerto Rican culture is black, Puerto Rican culture is mixed with African, European, and Taino cultures, making the Puerto Rican culture. Puerto Rican culture is Puerto Rican culture.

In the island even a person that was born in the USA can't vote because of being in the island as a voting location. So, if you want to vote for the president you have to go to Texas to do so.
But don't forget to say that if you are born in the island of Puerto Rico you can vote in USA once you are in a main USA state location. People have the right to vote for the president of the United States but not if your geographic location is in the island of Puerto Rico.
Don't forget that people from the island of Puerto Rico are all born under the USA flag. So they are like any other person born in the main USA. The only exception is voting in the island because the land is not a "state land" as of now.

Everyone on the island is mix, however you can clearly tell who's black, mulatto, mestizo and of Caucasians decent depending in the city this is higher then in other parts of the isand.
You need to understand that Hispanic is an ethnic group and not a race made of Native, African and causcasian. Is like that on most of the continent except U.S and Canada and even then you got Drake and Curry lights skin folks. Mixing between the same people balck/african and white/European their mulatto too.

But they sure did try. Don’t forget the unsuccessful Taino rebellions in the 1500s which drove most surviving Tainos deep into the mountains of PR or to other islands. Also the Africans slave rebellions as well. The Spanish did eventually mix with Tainos and Africans and adopted many of their words or customs compared to what the English and French did elsewhere in the Americas.

@@jp1431 No, their mission was evangelization, the law of Burgos gave complete rights to the indigenous in the early 16th century, 1511. @@reucat24 yea and they sure did evangelize. Either they converted or turned into slaves or got turn into slaves regardless if the converted. The high cacique Agueybana welcomed the spanish and even exchanged names with Ponce de Leon as a sign of trust, trust which didn’t last. The Tainos and Caribs indeed were historical enemies but the Europeans were so bad that they united for the Taino rebellions which ultimately failed. Don’t whitewash history man. The fact that barely any pure blood Tainos or Caribs survived is prime example that the Spanish didn’t come to just evangelize.
