with many 2 part [catalyzed] product you can keep it from gelling by putting into the freezer as soon as you're done with your first use. It won't last indefinitely but I have used on catalyzed urethanes 24 hrs. later. It still sprays well, & man does that paint set fast. This technique might just work with this product.

This certainly looks easier than the airbrush method I've used in the past. As long as you can do it in a once and done timeframe.

I am making my version of a Chris Reeve Pacific knife for my friend's son. Not only would it look cool, but it would help cover up some scratches that would take forever to polish out.

Informative video, thank you sir. I would coat a Bersa Thunder for my wife, I messed up the finish removing some surface rust, and she hasn't let me forget it yet.

Thanks for the opportunity, and for the heads up about the practical considerations of the product.
I have a couple of blades I regularly use in the woods that I stripped and forced patina on, mainly because their stock coatings were terrible. But I find that that the forced patina simply isn't sufficient rust protection for high carbon steel in my environment, and I end up having to give more maintenance to the blades than is practical for the grunt work I demand of them. I had just started looking for options to put a further protective coating on them, and then this video showed up. I like that kind of serendipity.

First my duck gun, 870. Also my Ruger American HMR. Metal only. Hope to see even my great grandkids shooting these. Not the most expensive guns but the ones that see the hardest wear hunting in all weather.

I was setting up an M4 for my son who is heading off to Basic at Benning soon, and gathered a bunch of parts so the rifle would closely resemble the M4 A1's he will be training with. Well, the base rifle had been sprayed with Krylon in a camo pattern, and I decided to take that off, and everything came off...except some of the green... and now the barrel and receiver have a kinda lime green color to them! Be nice to cover this up with FDE Duracoat!

I would apply it onto my Mossberg 500. This gun is subjected to the elements quite often, so a duracoat finish will definitely help with corrosion resistance. And I bet the color will contrast pretty well with the wood.

Thats a three fer. "Waste not want not" And thanks for the Duracoat info. As always, very informative. Thanks for all your efforts.

I have a single shot Stevens 12ga that I built. I chopped down the stock and barrel. 18.5" barrel, shorter LOP stock. Added a fiber optic front bead, painted the stock black, added a side saddle and limb saver. Shooting a 3" slug in a shotgun that weighs 4lb 15oz is a KILLER on the shoulder.
I built it as a cake on a survival gun boom stick type thing. I don't really shoot it very often, but it's super small, light, and looks pretty mean. I think it would be even cooler if the barrel another metal parts were FDE.

If it hasn't already been said, the reason there is such a short time that the can is usable is because the hardener does just that, hardens. Once mixed with the paint it starts a chemical process, the one that makes the finish so durable, which can't be stopped and doesn't take all that long..

I have used Duracoat quite a bit, and it's a good product, this last time, I tried Cerakote and It's harder to apply since I used the Oven cure version, and all I can say is that I won't be using Duracoat anymore, The Cerakote is better, but definitely more expensive.

Steel Shooter Correct Cerakote-c(ceramic) is far superior to anything Duracoat makes. It's cost a bit more and is a longer process but it's worth it and will have a much longer wear life compared to anything else on the DIY market.

duracoat will give an orange peel look. The high polished blue spray will look good if done properly. The problem with duracoat it's paint and will chip and peel. Cerakote is a better finish. If you have a blued pistol and want that bright blued look, have it hot blued instead.

Just an idea...I have not used duracoat myself...but I am a painter...I do have to mix with hardeners or a catalyst....but try put the duracoat in the fridge....in my experience in between my jobs if I out my paint in the fridge it slows down the hardening process...so maybe something to try if you feel you need to spray another coat past that 12hr mark you were talking about....

That would work just fine on my AR build. Gotta get some!

    I'd use it for my son's M&P15/22.
