The quad is pretty awesome, but it would Be no contest with a newer mountain sled.
I'm in NE Iowa and get a fair amount of snow but if I had to choose one or the other I would much prefer the quad with tracks.
A quad can be used year-round and has many uses such as for moving trailers, dragging heavy objects, pulling small vehicles that are hung up in snow drifts, and of course for fun and emergency transportation. I'm 56 so I don't care about speed anymore.
Cool stuff. Remember a handfull of years back first seeing tracks like that on a truck. Now everybody's making them.
I own a tracked quad and I totally agree with the video. They are slower than sleds but they are truly all-terrain. I can easily handle snow that sleds have trouble with. A sled will use speed to handle deep powder. Great on open ground, not so good in the bush. The only thing a track quad can’t do is float, but neither can a sled.
Edit: not really a realistic comparison anyway, sort of like comparing a Jeep with a corvette.
I own a Yamaha vk pro and it is a hard ride to tame. I also have a 2019 expedition swt with the 900 ace.....two completely different animals. The swt is a beast in the deep snow. Not bashing the tracked atv here, seems to be a lot of fun but the results would've been different with an experienced sledder and a SWT.

I live in The Poconos. I clearly remember getting a few snowfalls that were so deep the sleds had a terrible time. We had a really old Snow Prince that was heavier than the other sleds and that thing could handle the deep snow. Now today I am a person with a disability, so wrestling a sled isn't likely. Those tracks look interesting.
a tracked quad will blow your mind on where they will go in deep snow and if you get a quad with power stearing like my 700 grizzly they turn with ease compared to a sled, still like my hot rod sleds though and I am 57 with some pretty serious health/disability issues,,,,,,,, because always a kid at heart LOL.
I like all the sled fans here but I have seen both in person. The tracked atv is very good in very deep snow. Very stable and sinks less. It is slower than a snowmobile but it goes everywhere and is perfect for utility uses.

That is So stupid Said, quad sinks 2 Times Quicker bcz a mountain sled weights 190-246 kg and a quad 500-600 maybe .And i’ve driven a Can am Renegade 1000 with Alpine tracks in Deep Snow (1.90m) But only like 70-90 cm powder and it sinks imediatly . It gets stuck due to the back tracks (makes it get suspended)
I live in Northern Ontario and do a lot of sledding. I don't quad but have friends who do and some with tracks for the quads for winter. They're pretty good within their limits and I'm impressed with what they do here. But a sled, especially today's sleds, are superior to a quad with tracks. I would not take the quad where I take my sled. And I definitely wouldn't want to dig that thing out when it's stuck. Good workhorse in the right conditions, though.

We go up to Chapleau and Westtree Ontario. We use Skandics and Bearcats.
@@darrylcharron3363 Well, I'm a Skidoo man so you can't go wrong with a Skandic. I have a Backcountry x 800 now but it was a pain to get it to be the sled I wanted- overheated in low snow conditions and crap on ice even with the Ice Cobra track. Finally found a dual ply track with shorter harder lugs and fully studded it. Also dropped back end and added scratchers. Pretty good now but pound for pound the best sled all around that I've owned is the Renegade Sport 600 carburetor with studded track. Just a beast and low maintenance. Bought it in 2014 and my son now has it and it's still going strong.
I am a sledder too but dissagree a bit,,,,,, in deep fluffy powder and the biggest hills YES by all means the sled will eat the tracked quad for a snack,,,,,,, but in late winter/early spring when the snow is like a slushy from 7eleven it's the other way around then the quad is king, another place the quad has the upper hand is in very tight brushy terrain where the quad can use that brush to it's advantage,,,,,, it's great for guy like me who like to shed hunt or simlar things, in Idaho where I live I love getting out in that time of spring when the snow isn't there enough to sled but still too much for anything on tires if ya know what I meen.

This is not deep snow, this is barely any snow at all. Also the snowmobile rider was terrible and very biased towards giving the machine a bad impression.
In real deep snow (chest deep powder) the quand won't come close to a mountain snowmobile or a wide track.

Like I said, this is barely knee deep. There are some days where i get off my sled and i have snow over the top of my helmet and i am 6'2''. There is literally nothing that goes in that stuff but sleds.

An ATV wouldn't even begin to touch that amount of snow. Sleds are designed to ride on top of the snow. Your "rider" needs to ride the sled like a sled and not a car. You need to distribute your weight when side hilling, and you need momentum. Unless you know what you are doing which you obviously don't, you can't start up a hill perpendicular to the grade. Good luck getting that ATV unstuck, the sled weighs probably about 1/2 as much the ATV with a full track kit on it.
What you recommend for work? deep snow in forest? drag logs and stuff what you recommend for this kind of conditions? like hunters life in forest? Since i see you know much about this things?
Call the gods of snow and complain. Ya big dummy, everybody knows the snow machine will flat out leave the quad in a vapor cloud. C'mon man. You can do better. You have room for improvement. Lol Likewise, everybody knows when the guy falls over he is simply trying to demonstrate how a snow machine can throw ya, he just didn't wanna do it for real.

@@rddowler211 Mountain sled still has fewer square inches of track than an atv with 4 tracks if you're using the right tracks. the only thing a snowmobile wins at is speed.

im not into speed so having something uber fast is no issue. having reliability to not get stuck is a huge issue for me.

Our experience with deep 15-20" fresh light snow at 8000 ft ==> CanAm 1000 ATV is really not tough enough. We stripped a driveline and broke a transmission in deep snow without pulling any implement. A good grooming snowmobile doesn't break in deep snow. It does take some skill to keep them upright.
Because can am is a highly overated POS, big horsepower with too weak drivetrain (and a host of other issues) behind it,,,, have seen MANY canned hams with those issues, my 2007 yamaha grizzly 700 ducks unlimited edition has been turning tracks for going on 12 years now with not one single issue other than one wheel bearring and at the roughly 8000 miles on it mark I finnaly replaced the drive belt because it was out of wear limit by just a tad,,,,it was the ORIGINAL belt, I weigh 370 pounds give or take a few and carry a S**T ton of gear on that quad when I go out, it pushes a 72 inch plow every winter and I plow a LOT of area with it, it gets used at my auto repair shop to push dead vehicles around and a host of other work,,,, so take that for whatever but I had a Canned Ham for just a bit and was never so glad to get rid of the costant issue POS (2008 800 renegade that was supposed to be my out for fun quad LOL,,, real fun having to do some sort of fixing on it afer near every outing.

The other thing is a tracked quad can go from snow to dirt/mud/gravel with no problem. It can even cross paved roads if you encounter one. I’ve seen guys take sleds across pavement/gravel/dirt but in the few times I saw the aftermath it didn’t look pretty.
The loss of speed is not an issue to me when I get the benefits of four season and all terrain. My tracks were 6600$ on a 1000cc Polaris

This video is very deceptive in that the places they go and the conditions are far removed from the real world. Plenty people have these tracks but I don't know any of them that don't also have the snowmobile. I also don't know anyone that has kept the tracks more than a couple years. They don't last long and start giving trouble after a minimal amount of use.

looked at a new foreman equipped with tracks, was going to be using it in a tree farm that had about every terrain feature one may encounter , the thing that made me cautious was the amount of stuff that could get into and foul the drive was too much . For breaking trails and grooming they would be great .
Should have gotten the Honda, I use tracks on my 2007 yamaha grizzly 700 in the rocky mountains of Idaho in all kinds of terrain including thick brush areas and even rocky trails as well as snow as deep as something like 120 inches at the top of a couple ski slope areas where I go (that's 10 feet pluss of snow), even had them is some pretty damn nasty swamp a time or 2, never had a issue other than just lots of use of a couple idler bearing in the idler wheels going out and replacing the actuall track after like 8 years of use, I have the tatou 4 season brand made by camoplast and they just stay on that machine year round because it makes the thing damn near unstoppable wherever you want to go, as far a fouling up the drive it's pretty much non issue,, remember there is off road heavy equiptment and tractors that use rubber tracks in some damn rough terrain and use they just like the ones for quads are built and designed to deal with it.
I'd use the tracks for messing around, say by the cabin and such but skidoo all the way when it comes to lakes, rivers and pond crossing. I want speed and vs weight.
First off, that snowmobile rider is probably the worst rider i've ever seen, and second of all, if you're comparing machines like this, they should at least be in the same price range as the atv + the tracks.
A snowmobile would beat the atv at any task, its built for those enviroments. That's just how it is.
Would i pick the snowmobile over the atv? No, the atv is awesome.
But honestly, will a snowmobile climb a steep hill when you have to go slow to maneuver around trees? If you have to stop halfway up a steep hill with deep snow can you resume and finish the clinb? I don't know but my guess is no. I think the quad can do that. Maybe I'm wrong. I've never owned a snowmobile.

How about the strain on the drivetrain is the quad going to last as long using this setup?
I hear that you need at least 650 cc of power because of the extreme load on the quad. Some say they the track are very hard on the machines components. These machines are not designed for tracks.
not so true at all, it atually lowers the effective gear ratio so even smaller displacement quads do fine with them ( my nephew has a 400 big bear with thracks and it does excellent, as far as hard on the quad that depends some quads are light duty crap to start with, but something like a yamaha or honda or any better brand quad built for utility will handle it, personnally i would stay away from can am and polaris because they just are not as tough built depite what thier owners will say, my 2007 grizzly 700 has been turning tracks for nearky 12 years now (they never come off) with zero issues that i can relate to the tracks themselves, I have an old 1997 artic cat 454 bearcat that I just might track up because that machine is built like a little tank,,,,, just as a workhorse.
I live in North Sweden and has driven snomobiles all my life. Also in the last few years i have tried russian tracked atvs such as Rostin Crawler, Tinger dog and also my tracked UAZ 469. Unfortunatly EVERY slow vehicle has limits in the snow.. any tracked atv or car gets stuck in deep (Soft) snow when you go uphill since these machines doesnt have the speed to overcome the lost traction in soft snow.. So there is no big challenge here against a snowmobile to be honest. On flat terrain they all handle well but as soon as there is an uphill the snowmobile beats all competition. this is due to the fact that in order to overcome soft snow you have to think like water.. If you can remove more amount of water from below you quicker than you can sink under it then you will keep afloat.. thats why snowmobiles even can drive on open water if you keep the speed up.. But a tracked slow vehicle can not do this unless you overpower it ALOT. So the video is a bit missleading here in my opinon. For example i had alot of hope for the Rostin crawler when i first imported it to sweden but clearly the 15hp engine and small lugs on the tracks are pretty much useless in the deep snow. Note that i am now talking about LOOOSE snow.. not hard late winter crust :) All in all i love the videos made by Review machines but this one i dont agree with very much :) And that hill in the video is no match for a good modern snowmobile and an experience rider ;)
I don't care about deep snow, I want to know about stability on steep hills. I'm a snow maker and our sleds tip or slide on steep ski hills

That guy didn't know how to ride a snowmobile. My 1979 jphn deere trailfire snowmobile could go faster, over worse terrain, and float far better in the snow. Not to mention ground clearance. He says the quad has better ground clearence. But the snowmobile doesn't need ground clearance, it's chassis is built like one big ski so it floats.
Looks like the tracked quad is better for rugged terrain and slow going. Also may be easier for less experienced riders.

Quads suck in general especially in the snow those tracks on it that's excessive resistance rolling resistance among other problems are you wouldn't want to use that during the summer either,
My dirt bike can beat that snowmobile with that driver on it.

On flat snow the atv is easier not better. But in the deep Snow u cant drive with an atv. Come to me to Sweden then you will see the deep Snow and then you want a snowmobile not an atv. Never fall with the sled like he does xD and im drving on the streets and also in the Mountains

the sled is max 2k and its a trail sled vs the quad with the tracks and everything thats like 6k or more its just so dumb
You can get a good reliable used sled for 500 bucks, or less if you don't mind it being a vintage sled.
I like these treads but your sled drivers are noobs.. I have only had one good length of time on a sled and in the area I got to play if you got off the sled or stopped you were done till you dug both out. But even so I have gone through alot deeper and alot more uneven territory and never tipped it. And it took three of us kids to actually get the sled stuck but that was in snow deeper than 5 foot... Would be curious how well the treads do in that deep of snow.
They are not really comparable as each has very different functions.
The quad on the other hand can go onto dry snowless land
So if a snowmobile had bogie Wheels in if there are air-cooled it could go on normal land 2
I'm an avid quad rider I've been doing it for years and I've ridden sleds also and I prefer the quad!

Well of course the heavy 4 stroke Yamaha trail 2up snowmobile will get stuck in snow more then 2 ft. Especially going slow. Now compare it to a Polaris pro rmk, sks, sba, even a titan. And all of skidoos similar line up different story eh. It will out preform any snow vehicle out there because it’s build for it. Quads has its place for sure and I would pick it over that sled you featured, but not over the ones I listed above ⬆️ in my opinion.
If your looking at even trying to play in deeper snow and powder especially as a beginner the lighter 2 stroke snowmobiles with 141” track with 1.5 - 2.5” lugs is the way to go. Good on the trail, light and easy to get out if you do get stuck even by yourself and less likely to even get stuck.
Unrealistic comparison. Get someone who knows how to ride a sled.

The snowmobile rider doesn’t seem to have any skill. I have that exact Yamaha snowmobiled and I would not be afraid of any of these conditions.
Something to consider is a person's age. I grew up with dirt bikes and I was pretty awesome on the hills and trails at one time. If I was still 22 I would agree. Now I'm 56 and I don't want to wrestle something to make it perform. I don't think people older than me want to either. We want something that's practical, easy and comfortable. I guess it comes down to age.

That rider was terrible and it was a work sled which you wouldn’t use for powder I’m 12 and I’m a better rider then that guy he didn’t even know how to side hill. Also the snow we get in Ontario is way deeper if I was sledding and jumped off my sled it would be up to my arm pits

A Mountain Sled has no problems in deep snow .. and an unskilled rider was tipping the sled over.. You need to learn how to sidehill and you need a mountain strap and left hand throttle

Snow mobiles are "heads and shoulders" above these quad machines....and...quad machines need be by necessity...at least 1,000 cc machines to turn the "cogs" of these tracks effectively.
No 500-600 cc machine will last long....with tracks...to much power needed.
Also...and finally....these "quads" are really small groomers....too slow to have real "fun and excitement,...but good workers" for poor towns and counties that need groomers.
A real groomer costs "north of $125K"...
Conclusion: I'd rather have a quad in the summer...and a snow mobile with groomed trails in the winter. No contest. But...I only speak from 25 years of experience...what do I know?

That is not deep snow, at all and it is hard packed, the snowmobiles nearly sinks 3 to5 inches, Mont Valin Quebec as a snow fall of an average of 6 meters, that is a similar place you should test your tracked quad in 3 meters of powder snow

LOL. A tracked quad stands NO chance against a sled in the snow. The price of a tracked quad will be about 3k more. You also won't be able to ride a tracked quad on our snowmobile trails. This was pretty funny though.
