    The Old Guard Immortals Explained
Ok so the Old Guard is based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. The 2017 release gained a lot of critical acclaim at the time and it's been a quick turn around taking this from comic to comic book movie in a matter of years.
It's easy to see why too and the source material stands head and shoulders above a lot of other releases due to it's unique concept.
Like the source material, the movie follows a group of immortal mercenaries that travel the world completing jobs. They're basically like The True Knot from Doctor Sleep but not a bunch of chumps.
We as humans sort of gain purpose in life knowing that time is of the essence, however when it comes to the characters in the old guard, they live pretty lonely lives due to merely existing through the ages and knowing countless people that have died.
They are clearly tired of it and in some ways it's like they want things to end whilst also being attached to their lives. This is exemplified by the line that opens the film in which Andromache of Scythia or rather Andy, played by Charlize Theron says that she's exhausted.
Andy dates back all the way to ancient Greece and two of the other members were on opposing sides of the crusades. These actually ended up as lovers and are called Nicky and Joe whilst the final immortal is called Booker. Booker was a deserter during the Napoleonic war and this kinda plays into his arc.
    The Old Guard Ending Explained
The movie sort of has an extra scene in which we see booker six months later in Paris drinking himself to d...well not death and he's greeted by Quynh who we see has escaped from the Iron Maiden.
Now this movie adapts the Old Guard Storyline Opening Fire which started it's five-issue run in 2017. Following this, the creative team planned a trilogy off the back of it with the second storyline being called Force Multiplied.
The film changes things slightly as in the original run, Quinn was called Noriko but I think they switched this up so that fans of the comics would have some surprises for the movie. In the source material, Noriko and Andy were lovers and they spent time sailing the world on a ship. However, Noriko was swept away by the ocean and she spent centuries drowning and ressurecting which is similar to what we see in the film.
    Comic Book Differences
The character wants revenge for Andy never coming to save and though the latter just wants to talk things through, Noriko wants blood.
This leads to a big battle that spills over publicly and ends up drawing the attention of the FBI.
As of making this video the fifth and final issue has not been released and it's due to come out on the 15th of July so make sure you let me know in the comics below if you've read it and what you thought.
The creative team behind the work has said that they're...

I disagree.. i feel as opposed to 6 underground this movie has handled a close knit group of mercenaries very well. The back and forth of past to present and story telling was smooth. Their plot holes were 99% plugged and it all had a purpose without it being over the top or just the first instalment made for introduction. Action scenes where fantastic and their comfort in combat next to each other was evident.

For a 6000 year old immortal who’s fought her way this far, I would have loved to see that reflected in the choreography. The bits of the old guard using a mix of their individual traditional weapons with modern firearms was great in the first fight but was not played up in the remainder of the film, shame.

It’s the characters and the relationships that sell this movie for me honestly. A lot of superhero action type films can do great action and good plots, but the small and sincere character moments often gets lost in the shuffle. The Old Guard really made me fall in love with these characters so that I would care and want to know more about their story. I think it is the perfect beginning story for a trilogy, more future films can tackle more of the history of the characters.
I love that the movie kept things simple, it’s gives us a rather straightforward story that is easy for people who didn’t read the comics to get into. But it peppers in the tiny details that would make any interested viewer want to chase down more information. It’s certainly led me to getting the comics. And I think that’s a success.
Good franchise starters do the building blocks and don’t show all their hands too early, and The Old Guard has set a decent strong foundation that makes people want to see more and be curious.
And beyond all of that, the representation for characters of color, for female characters, and LGBTQ+ characters is done so effortlessly well that I truly hope this gives a blue print to future films and shows, not just ones in the comics/superhero genre, on how to do representation well, and not have it be a token thing.
Overall, this is one of the more interesting stories I’ve seen this year and it’s grabbed me so much that I’m going to delve deeper into this universe, and I hope they get a sequel greenlit!

One of my favourite aspects of the movie was Joe and Nick's relationship. As someone who's bisexual it's amazing to see a gay couple have such a healthy relationship that's important to them while they also get their job done. A lot of times gay characters' storylines are either entirely about their relationship or they have nothing to do with it and it's an afterthought. It was really nice seeing them have a nice balance

There were differences in the movie from the comic which I guess added a little mystery for those of us who read the comic. The big difference in my opinion was that Andy loses her ability to heal in the movie, but this is not in the storyline of the comic. The movie ending sets up the stage for a second movie which is starting just like the comic. Hopefully they will be able to do a second movie. I did enjoy it even though the first half was a bit slow to start. Strong finish.

This was a film I watched that I didn't know any history about, it was a totally random watch. So as an outsider I did find it quite enjoyable. However I did feel like it was quite compressed as though it could of been a 3+ hour film forced into the space of 2, causing the film not to flow aswell as it could in a more " ideal world " situation.
But overall, forgiving that aspect, it's definitely one of Charlize Theron better films.

Actually it was a part of her character development. And even in the final scene, she still doesn't kill without hesitation. That moment in the elevator, where she has to build herself up towards it. Added to her hesitation to pull the trigger when she meets Merrick. Or where she pushes Kozak out of the way but doesn't kill her.
Even in the end, she doesn't kill easily, especially when she comes faced with someone who is unarmed. But she'll fight back when someone is shooting at her, or when others are in danger.

@@heavyspoilers I'd say the pacing was perfect, though I have noticed that certain reviewers seem to have missed the point of it, because they focus too much on wanting cliché action scenes and explosions, and miss the emotional impact of the scenes. Like how you whine about the actors, when every actor in this movie was perfect. From the gentle eeriness of Nicky, to the intensity and gregariousness of Joe. The sadness in Booker, and how much I loved to revile Merrick, Keane and Kozak. Andy and Nile were of course excellent as well. There was not a weak spot in the entire cast. the pacing was perfect. Male pandering movies might have skipped over the introductionary scene with the baklava bet, but because of it, you instantly get attached to these characters. you start believing in them as a found family from the start, instead of just looking at a bunch of faceless action figures, like you do in the majority of action movies that mostly make me lose interest in the characters. Unlike TOG, where there wasn't a single character I didn't instantly remember the name of, which for me, is a huge thing. If you can make me like characters enough to remember their names without having to make me look them up, then you've succeeded in characterization.
Every action scene in tog flowed out of characterization, even the 'exposition' scenes, did far more than just tell us the fact, they showed us how these people interact, how they welcomed Nile into the group, built up each individual member of the group, and makes you care about them. Whether it was the dinner scene, or the one with the nightmare, they make you care about these people. They show us how kind these immortals are, and how much of a damn they still give. And that is priceless, the fact that he director knew enough to slow things down, for that, is what made the movie so great, because by the time you get in the middle of the heavy action scenes, the action actually matters;, because these aren't just nameless faces being shot at. They're people you want to see safe and happy.
Far too many action movies these days are too fast, rush through the emotional scenes and fall flat because you don't give a single bit of a fuck about who the chars are, cause all they are is a bunch of quips, one liners and ability to shoot people, and that well... get boring pretty quick.
As a result most action movies are something you watch once and push aside, with The Old Guard, I've watched the movie over ten times so far, and every single time I watch it, I find new things to love and be excited about.

I want someone to wax poetic about me after a millennia the way Joe did about Nicky when they were in the van lol. They're my new favorite couple. Also, I find the concept of loneliness as a punishment to be quite interesting. I'm like Nile, I probably would have just let Booker off with an apology because he's clearly remorseful and he genuinely just wanted to find an end for Andy, it's a weird twisted devotion to her happiness but I can appreciate it?
